“Lakon Mu Lima, you are cleared for approach. Welcome back to His Majesty’s fleet.”
The main docking bay of the Majestic-class Imperial cruiser was far more cramped than civilian starports, but that didn’t matter. I’d upheld my word to Denton Patreus’s private organization and re-joined the fleet.
Not that the news from the front was all that encouraging.
Word around the pilots’ bar was that Archon Delaine’s Kumo Crew was putting up stiffer resistance than had been expected. He had let Patreus’s fleet penetrate deep into Pegasi- and then sprung his trap, hitting the fleet with everything he had. Progress towards Harma had been slowed considerably, and the fleet was in a largely defensive stance. Even the supply lines had been hit hard.
Thus, a second wave of reinforcements was being assembled. I wasn’t exactly jazzed about being sent into Pegasi after all that had happened, but it was better to be the cavalry that rescues than the poor sods in need of rescuing, I reasoned. Besides, the money was good, and I’d be back in Imperial service under my own terms for a change.
