RawnuOne way forward here maybe could be to truly have social hubs (as Kira called them) where player-player interaction can take place (talking about space legs, not dogfights).

Shinrarta could at least have been a spot for players to meet up at (eventually), as it's one of the few spots players gather up around (without being part of a squadron or event or whatever), but instead because PvP is at all times possible in the game it's just a ganker-infested black hole that only (or mostly) the thrill seekers bother going to in Open. Outside of that location and/or general vicinity, you can be in Open but rarely meet players, or just pass each other by without much interaction, unless you're in one of the Thargoid war systems (which I could rant on a whole other level about how it was a badly managed and executed attempt at storytelling).

It of course also wouldn't solve for the slight matter of there being nothing particularly meaningful to do on stations on foot, or it not feeling like an 'alive' area.

These hub spots could be accessible by the game's core architecture. Since stations themselves are already no fire zones it would be possible to just use that "no draw" weapon status for a greater hub zone. We could even use a bridge space like for instance one of the many inordinately long elevator shafts that make up a lot of the station's interior designs. From there it could connect to a joined space, even in solo, that would allow for interaction.

The issue comes in with the fair point you brought up that there's frankly, not much to do. Right now there would need to be quite an overhaul or expansion to the way missions work for this to have any other point than a chat room. So it seems like these public spaces would be better served as a feature post mission expansion.

But... but... you can do all that in Minecraft. (Not sure if you can talk to someone, text probably)

On more serious note, what's are minimal recommended modification for Krait MKII to go and have some fun with thargoids?

EDIT: found something. https://wiki.antixenoinitiative.com/en/builds Your ideas are still welcome.

The more the better, if you don't want Thargoids to have fun with you. Though, could you specify please? Do you want some general details or a specific module?

AHWould something like this make sense for going outside of the bubble?
https://edsy.org/s/vau4ttN
(forget the weapons for now)

It's based on what I found from https://edastro.com/exploration/ but their version has serious power issues.

Two suggestions for your next time:
  1. If you want range, it makes no sense to use any FSD other than A-rated (SCO). Also, you have enough heat level margin to use Mass Manager instead of Thermal Spread.
  2. If you have the materials, a Lightweight Alloy armour with grade 5 Heavy Duty engineering plus Deep Plating effect will get you a better jump range (because it weighs nothing) at about the same (in fact, even slightly better) hull strengths as a Reinforced Alloy with grade 1 Light Weight.

AHHere is me, flying with SRV, ~3 km off the ground. LOL. That was actually extremely funny because at first I had no idea what happened.

So, what did happen? Did you drive over an active geyser?

I enjoy jumping the SRV into geysers on low grav worlds. They are nature's steam catapult.

I would only recommend doing so with the Scarab, the Scorpion does not have adequate thrusters to slow down its fall when physics takes hold of you again.

I went to pick up a nugget of some material, geyser erupted and I hit the thrusters for some reason. LOL. I went up spinning. When I realized, what has happened, I was actually worried for a moment that maybe there is no way down. Unless of course, I can flip the SRV, belly up, and hit the thrusters to change the direction.
Anyway, I floated a bit and then is started to land slowly. My ship took off because I was outside of 2 km radius. That was fun. I am sure I will do that again.
Also, on low grav worlds, you can speed over a bump, hit the thrusters and do rolls while in the air.
Have fun.
PS! That roll part is weird because every wheel should act like a gyroscope but they do not.

RawnuTalking about Odyssey and on-foot stuff (@Meowers mentioned something about the emptiness of the settlements), let's talk about it:

(1) What do you really like about your space legs?
(2) What Odyssey content is your favorite?
(3) What would you love to see improved?

For me it's:
(1) After playing for long years on console, coming to Odyssey on PC (ok, SteamDeck) made me feel like a real person. Being able to walk around, to see myself as a person, really added to the immersion of the whole Elite experience. Also: fancy suits.
(2) Stealthing and sniping, I love to sneak into stuff and kill people silently from afar.
(3) Settlements are too empty and not varied enough. I want more NPCs doing every day stuff, I want shopping malls and schools and stuff, turning them into real little towns. It would also be cool to have missions combining several vehicle activites, like dogfights with your spaceships, SRV battles, SRV exploring, on-foot exploring etc. And I would love to have more Concourse stuff (see the other post of mine about Carriers). Or to frame it better: something else in a station or a port than a concourse.

Could you help with SRV driving. I can't seem to get the SRV driving. How du you start engines? W does'nt seem to get the vehicle to move? I'm stuck on th surface!

check in the control settings - I think 'R' is accelerate 'F' is decelerate by default (WASD is used for yaw & roll if/when you're not in contact with the ground)

I'd strongly advise having a key set to toggle drive assist - fine movements (moving around accurately in a small area) in an SRV are painful. (when the throttle is set to 5%, the srv doens't move, but if you boost a bit off the ground it does accelerate but too much.
