Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

They dropped out of Witchspace and Kate fought at the controls to steer them away from the gravity well pulling at them from the Dwarf.

Kate guided the  Rocinante out of its grasp, as every bulkhead of the ship groaned under the immense pull. They targeted the second planet in the system and as soon as she could, they went silent and looped around the ringed planet, falling into a low stationary orbit circling its solitary moon.

Effie keyed her panel and issued the pre agreed signal. Seconds later two Imperial Cutters popped up on her screen, hard points out and shields up.

"A voice came across on a secure channel, "Rocinante, follow us to the surface and keep your hardpoints stowed. We will fire at the first sign of aggression."

"Understood" replied Effie. "Lead on Admiral"

The three ships proceeded to enter the Moon's thin atmosphere, with the Rocinante sandwiched between the two Imperial Navy ships and the three ships set down in a large crater on the dark side.

"Mr. Smith" Kate spoke into the ships intercom, "We have arrived as scheduled."

A thin voice replied, "Thankyou, Ms. Trinket. My men will meet me at the steps. Please ensure that you and your crew remain on the bridge. I have arranged for your fee to be transferred into the account you provided, if you would like to check your balance and confirm that all is as it should be."

Effie keyed her access code into her console, "Thankyou Mr. Smith, please ask your companions to confirm when they are clear of the hatch and we will be on our way"

"Very good" came the reply.

Effie and Kate watched from their seats on the bridge, as a squad of Imperial soldiers approached the ship, on foot. Kate lowered the Ramp. Moments later they watched as the group walked back to the Cutter that was sitting just meters off their port side.

"Get us out of here Kate" said Effie.

"No need to tell me twice" replied Kate. "I have a funny feeling about this!"

Before their passenger and his guard had even boarded the Cutter, the other Imperial ship was already dusting off!

"From the jump seat behind the girls, Jim asked, "who was that guy?

"Don't ask!" Effie said, in an unusually stern tone.

As Kate reached ten metres from the surface, she pointed the ships nose to 90 degrees and hit the boost with all pips to the engines. "Get us out of here NOW!" barked Effie.

Before Kate could reply, or their FSD could spool up, the first Cutter was laying its beams on them!

"B'stards!" Shouted Jim "What are they playin' at?!"

Effie fired off a shield cell, but they were already taking damage and sparks were flying from every panel as their ship was jolted by the force applied on its shields.

"Strap yourself in Jim" shouted Kate as she disengaged flight assist and rotated the ship on its axis, letting off a barage of seekers at their attacker. "Shields are down!" She shouted above the noise.

One more boost shot them over the bow of the Cutter as Kate dropped two proximity mines, "Frak!" Said Kate, then, nothing...

Sian walk hurriedly down the metal catwalk towards Pad 3 of Pashin Dock. With her jacket collar turned up in an effort to hide the bruising, it did little to stop the glances and raised brow of concerned dock workers. She could feel their eyes on her but she didn't look to them. Instead, she focused on boarding her Keelback as fast as possible. At least her pursuers wouldn't check this route to the pad. She hoped.
---
Hidden away in a valley near Hottot Prospect, the Keelback was powered down as much as possible whilst still keeping life support and comms open. Sian, laying in her cabin bed with a painkiller booster pumped through the arm, had been trying to come up with solutions. Rubbing her forehead with a frustrated sigh, she sat up and made her way to the cockpit. Pressing her fingers on the communications panel, she searched for a name that might help her. Batu Mandakh.

"Hey, Batu. Long time no sprechen. How you doing?" Sian paused for a moment. "Listen, I could do with some help. Remember my uncle was the one who got me and my sis a keelback each? Turns out the a****** picked up the creds for it through a loan shark. He didn't mention a thing." With a slight pained groan, she sat down. "They want their money back with interest... and they roughed me up to prove they meant it."

Feeling nerves hit her, a slight shake in her hands, she reaches for a cig-stick pack. She knew they'd do her no good, especially if she got back into the habit, but right now? She could do with the crutch. Lighting one up and putting it between her lips, Sian looked back to the comms panel.

"I'm not sure what I'm asking for. Help. Ideas... Work? How 'bout we meet up somewhere? Are you still kicking around Qetesh? I heard Inara's got a pretty good bar - how 'bout I buy you a drink there?"

-"Docking successful, engines disengaged."

Today's delivery was done for. That was the seventh leg of the uneventfull and unamusing trip back and forth to and from ETA-2 Hydri system. Cargo? According to today's manifest, a total of 5230 tonnes of hydrogen fuel was delivered. Another job well done. Batu began his parking checklist:

- Left Engine fuel control levers, OFF

- Left engine fuel pumps, OFF

- (Repeat the procedure for the right engine)

-"Yeah, no shit." The pilot thought to himself.

- Window Heat, OFF

- Isolation valve, OPEN

- Passenger signs, OFF

Batu released a deep sigh. "What kind of f*ing idiot put this line in there. What the f*ck for?"

- Standby power, OFF

- Comm systems...

Just as Batu was ready to push the button and kill VHF & FTL console in it's entirety, a loud, high pitched tone rang in the cockpit. Without the dreadfull scream of the engines and soothing hum of ventilators in the background, the sound seemed almost ear piercing. It was the tone all commanders are way too familiar with. A notification bell.

Pilot opened up the message with hesitation, expecting yet another automatic notice, sent on behalf of the Consortium, congratulating him and his wing for another succesfull delivery. How could these messages pass trough the spam filter was still beyond him, but then again he remembered that it were his employers who set up this bloody comm console in the first place... His guess turned out to be wrong. Message was encrypted, and adressed for his credentials only. To make matters worse, to his old credentials, and what he heard, startled him.

At first, he had trouble recognising the voice, not to mention her unusuall name. He replayed the recording again, and again, and finally, the realisation dawned upon him. It was her, the young hotshot whom he hired as his wingman for one of the dirty jobs the Consortium still had a displeasure to ask him to accomplish. They weren't friends, not even collegues. Hell, they've met only once, and she sprinted out of Qetesh as quickly as she got in there, not before she got her fat share of credits for the job, of course. Months passed since they've met, with no trace of her to be found. Batu simply presumed she got herself killed, and didn't inquire any further. A theory not far fetched seeing how Sian almost got spaced trying to wrestle with an FDL pilot way out of her league. As he liked to put it,  "She soared the void with her heart, not her brain..."

However, what he heard in that message was not a sanguineus commander ready to dispense the led just for the heck of it. It was a weakened, broken person trying to retain her compolsure, something to admire given the circumstances. To him, this barerly was a shocking sight, as he had seen how easely void breaks the human body, and especially human spirit. Not to mention the many times when such misery was dispensed out of his hands, by his will...

Now, there she sat down, dirty, bruised and shaken, whilst he was standing up in a shiny, ornate cockpit, with a neatly fitted uniform on his shoulders. It's funny how paths of life can divert for two people.

Still, one thought bothered him. What if those that he pathetically refered to as "demons of his past" were simply making an attempt to flush him out of his hideout and settle the score? Were they resourcefull enough to synthesise a human voice? On the other hand, they knew him as much as he knew them. To try and bait him to help some damsel in distress? They knew Batu wouldn't give a f*ck.

After a quick trought, he typed the safest response he could come up with:

-"What's in it for me?"
06 Jan 2021, 3:26pm
'Incoming Message' - "What's in it for me?" Came Batu's concise and to the point reply.

Sian pressed her thumbs up into the corners of her eyes as she curled up in her seat. Bringing her knees to her chest and resting her bare feet on the console, she felt a sense of dread wash through her. Head to toe. Perhaps he didn't remember her? Perhaps he didn't actually care? Perhaps he was as selfish an a****** as she should've remembered... perhaps he is being cautious. She decided she had to assume the latter. Assuming anything else felt ominous and another path to another problem.

Putting a finger down on the console, she recorded a video message. With cig-stick hanging in her mouth, Sian looked tired to exhaustion with bags under her eyes and none of that youthful zeal Batu may have recalled in her eyes. Neck down she sported the occasional bruise. Purple going on yellow. "Truth be told Batu, I ain't got much to offer you. If I had creds to offer, I'd have used'em to buy myself more time with the sharks. I've got my wits, my time and this keelback; and that's what's on offer."

Exhaling a cloud of smoke, she took the stick out and held it in her fingers as she rubbed her forehead with the back of her hand.

Ao!An voice filled the cockpit of the Unicorn, Alphonse, a less advanced copy of Leo from the Yamato spoke:
"Warning! An unidentified heat signiture has been detected, relative bearing 210 degrees by -10 degrees.
Sensors indicate hardpoints are deployed"
Commander Edge cursed loudly:
"Red Alert! All hands to battle stations, fighters, emergency sortie, divert power to the sheilds and weapons!"

The normally bright cockpit went dark, before being bathed in an eerie red light.
The whirr of machinery as the turreted beam lasers and multi cannons extended from the hull and the Unicorn's engines flared to life as the hulking cutter, setup as a fighter carrier and support ship turned about to face the incoming hostile.

"Commander Edge to Kongo and Starlight Lady, defenceive formation B, protect the Arstarte at all costs! Lupus in Fabula! We are the Wolf, speak our name and we shall come!"

The Kongo, a python gunboat, every hardpoint loaded with corrosive multicannons and packhound racks took up position between in incoming signal and the Arstarte, starlight lady moved into position above and behind the Arstarte, deploying its own hard points, standard mix of pulse lasers and multi cannons, with one exception; The turreted repair beam mounted in the starboard nacelle, it turned on the Astarte and fired on low power.
As long as the starlight lady could maintain weapon power, the Astarte could not be harmed.

The opening wave of the attack reached them in moments:
The incoming limpets were quickly turned to dust by the defending ship's point defence systems.

The two condor fighters, both rigged for speed and sheild breaching began their run.
The paid tore through the night, it was difficult to make out the ship type at this distance but the telltale glint of the cockpit screen was clearly visable in the starlight.

They opened with a quick one - two style attack, one behind the other the two fighters strafed along the hull of the attacking ship, taking special care to land as many hits as possible on the glass.
On their own fighters will only do minor damage to even modest shields, but still the psyhological effect of knowing that if those shields had failed that blast would have melted your face would make even the most battle hardned commander wet their remlock.

"Alphonse, relay all battle data to my heads up display and send an emergency ping to the starwolf with our location requesting support, there is no garuntee there is only the one ship!"

"Aye Aye, ping is away"

"Incoming hatch-breaker limpet!" Gerhard chirped in right into the conversation with Amata's escorts. What the hell? she thought as the vibrations of a large ship buzzing by made the cockpit windows vibrate. "Well, Gerhard, never thought I would have to say this as we're usually alone on board, but... Chime the ship-wide alert. Battle Stations. And deploy hardpoints." "Yes, Commander."

She quickly checked her radar to see where the attacker went before opening comms again. "Astarte to escorts, don't worry about those hatchbreakers. The cargo bay is empty, so let him waste those if he wants to. Worst that could happen is that I need to repressurize it later." She then accelerated to full speed, trying to get her escorts between the ship and the mysterious attacker, hoping that Jason, who was the more experienced combat pilot, could relieve her before things got too heated.

Video feed went trough. There she was. Beaten, barefoot and bankrupt. Curled up in pain like a wild wolf caught up in snares. Hardly any kind of trap he was so paranoid about. Obviously, she had nothing to offer, and probably no one else left to reach out for. Sian was there, alone, with a burden far greater that she ever imagined to carry. Hardly a stalemate for him, but not her, no ... not with her experiece, or rather lack there of.

But then again, why the hell did he even care? Cozy position, in which Batu found himself now became a reality only thanks to the kindness of strangers. Has the God finally listened, and gave him a chance to redeem himself?

-"Get your ass to Inara, pronto. Meet me at Anada. Here, grab these encryption codes" Rushed typing noises were audible troughout the recording. "Something happends: use the channel I gave you , and never, NEVER, F*CKING, EVER, try reaching me trough this ship."

The pilot released the PTT button. Still, his conscience bothered him, not just because he realised that, in rush, he actually invited a girl to a titty bar. He should have said more, but what else was he supposed to say?!

-"F*ck." Batu shouted out to silence his troughts, and smashed the mike button, again, quickly, as if trying say what he wanted to say, before he changes his mind.

-"It's gonna be ok."

With a flash of blinding white light, the Rocinante dropped into the system from Witchspace and just hung there, motionless.

Kate’s eyes opened slowly and although blurry, she soon realised that she was lying face down on the floor of the ship’s bridge. Thick electrical smoke filled the air and the red emergency lighting had kicked in.

She coughed and tried to sit up. As she went to push herself up, the pain was surreal. Clearly her left arm was broken. Rolling over onto her other side, she pulled herself up onto the seat next to her and looked around the cockpit.

Effie was slumped in her seat. A bulkhead appeared to have struck her head, Jim was lying up against the door behind them.

“Effie? EFFIE?” No response. Kate checked for a pulse. Placing two fingers on her neck, it was there, but faint and her breathing was very shallow.

Kate hit a panel to her left, to access the emergency medkit. Opening the box one handed, she pulled out an oxygen cylinder and placed the mask over her friend’s face. That’ll have to do for now, she needed to check on Jim.

She stumbled to the rear of the cockpit and knelt down next to Jim. His pulse was strong, so after a rudimentary visual scan of his body, she tapped his face gently and he opened his eyes. He coughed and “Are you OK?” Kate, he asked.

“My arm’s broken, but that’s not important right now. How are you?”

After a moment Jim replied, “Yes, I just had the wind knocked out of me.

I can’t wake Effie!” Kate was worried. “I need you to stabilise the ship and check the systems. The canopy’s cracked but seems to be holding for now, but first, help me get Effie into the Med Pod”

With Kate’s arm in a temporary sling that Jim had tied around her neck, their main concern in moving Effie, was restraining her neck. Jim grabbed a piece of the console that was lying on the floor, about half a metre in length, nice and straight and grabbing a roll of Duct Tape, he slid the makeshift backboard behind Effie as Kate restricted her head gently and then he taped her securely to it. “On three, he said, you take her feet, gently now”

A few moment later they had Effie placed into the ship’s Medical Pod. Kate set the system to run a full scan on her friend as Jim returned to the bridge. Moments later Kate joined him. “What’s the story Jim?”

“The ship’s in once piece, apparently, Kate, but we’ve lost Thrusters, the FSD is offline, Shields are inoperable, but life support is stable. Power’s down to 40%. Biggest concern, apart from Effie, is that canopy right now!”

“Where are we?” Asked Kate

“No idea” he replied, “Navigation and Scanners are FUBAR”

Kate had set the ship to jump with no system selected, just as she dropped the mines over the Cutter, as the FSD had spooled up so the ship would have just run to its maximum FSD range before dropping out. They could be just about anywhere.

“I thought you said this first trip was a milk run, when you hired me!” He said to Kate. “Just transporting some eccentric billionaire”

“Yep, that’s what we thought too, but clearly that guy is far more than just some eccentric knob. Those were Elite Imperial troops sucking up to him. Effie’s gone and got us mixed up in something big again! Why can’t we be satisfied simply getting by smuggling booze for Pirates?” Said Kate. “Ouch!” She had bumped her arm against the seat.

“You need to go and check on The Boss and get that arm sorted Kate” said Jim, “In the meantime I’ll get the thrusters back up and we can get moving, we’re sitting ducks if they managed to track us”. I’ll need help with the Scanner and Nav array though.”

“Sure thing”. As Kate headed back to the Med Pod, she thought, “Hmm, this guy’s cool in a crisis. I like him.” Then she turned her attention to her friend, the scan was about to complete its cycle. She was still unconscious.
07 Jan 2021, 11:09am
Effie’s eyes opened. She was in her bed, Kate was sitting next to her.

“Hello sleepy” said Kate. “How are you feeling?” Kate brushed a lick of Effie’s hair away from her face. “Don’t sit up”

The Med Pod has removed any external sign of injury. The skull wasn’t fractured but there was a haematoma, but that’s been removed. There will still be some discomfort from the edema. Effie, you must remain mildly sedated and in bed until the swelling has subsided.”

“What about Cheska?” Effie was stressing out. “Where’s the cat?”

“Cheska’s fine. Look, there she is” said Kate pointing to the chair across the room where the cat was curled up and fast asleep.

“And Jim? The ship?. Are you alright?”, questions came flooding into Effie’s head all at once and she looked like she was about to throw up.

“Calm down Eff”, reassured Kate. “My left arm was fractured, but as you can see, the Med Pod’s bone knitter has fixed that right up. I need to wear this cast for a few days, that’s all. Jim’s down in the engine room trying to get the thrusters back up. He’s fine, not a scratch. Actually, he’s a steely eyed missile man in a crisis!”

Kate placed a bucket next to the bed. Stay here babe and call me if you need anything. “I need to get sensors and comms back up. “I’ll be on the bridge. Stay in bed Effie, I mean it!”

Kate got up to leave the room, Effie was already asleep by the time she reached the door.

I got to the lounge and the waiter saw me coming, I looked at him and said, "Table for three, and get three glasses of bourbon please."

Just then JB showed up and I waved him over as he took a seat, I said "I figure a good meal and couple days sleep will sort you out, I gotta run right after we eat, it seems I'm on the hot seat for something right now, and have to get briefed on it in an hour or so."

Just then Sylvia arrived and I waved her over and the waiter showed up with holo menu's.  I smiled, "Give them a few but you already know what I eat."

Just then I spotted the Badger get up from his table and head for the door and I jumped up and intercepted him. "Badger" he turned and looked at me, "Spud, great to see you what can I do for you?"

I said, "Badger you see that fellow sitting over there with me? He is a close friend, if you don't mind see to it that station security gives him any access to anything he needs please, make sure if you would?"

"Sure Spud, anything, whats his name?" I smiled, "Whatever he tells you it is." Badger started laughing, "Ok Spud, we got it. Done"

I went and sat back down and looked over at JB. "You wont have any issues here, take a short vacation."

Nouvel was a nice station. Friendly. Cooperative ran stations always had the same feeling. Not as outwardly rich but they had a community feel about them. If JB was going to be forced to drop anchor for a few days then there were a lot worse places he could find himself.

JB took a sip of the bourbon. There was a reassuring warmth to it that gave away it's pedigree. Unsure of the pace his dinner companions would be drinking at, JB had filled his hipflask with a cheaper bourbon from the bar in his room.

JB looked at Sylvia as he waited, out of old habits, for the lady to order first.... but she was still browsing the menu. JB had been taught manners by a grifter that had taken him under his wing. JB worked as a second whilst the conman ran his scams. That was back in his teenage streetgang days, way before he'd had half his face blown off... and now fancy restaurants seemed alien to him. Even schmoozing clients was a more boozey event.

He decided he'd waited long enough.

"Steak, please," JB told the waiter, "Sirloin, rare... and a cold beer, in the bottle, local is fine. Thanks, mate."

JB then looked over at Sylvia for her to make her order.

Sylvia finally got around to ordering, she ordered a steak salad...

I chuckled, "Watching your figure?"

"No she said, but to much red meat effects my fitness levels"

I turned to JB, "When were finished eating, I have to go catch up on some squadron work, with the boss away, its left to a couple of us. I trust you find something to do until your ship turns up, but if you have need of a ship, let me know you can use that Vulture of mine, I never use the damn thing anyway."

The waiter brought everyone's drinks and then followed shortly with the food, and manners or no, I dug in, I need a good meal to wash the taste of the prison barge out of my mouth, ha and I was only on it for six hours.

“There’s nothing I can do about the FSD without parts that we can’t make onboard. Best we can manage right now is enough thrust to get us down onto that Planet.” Said Jim as Kate came down the steps from the Bridge. “How’re you doing with the electronics?”

“Scanners are working, just, but comms is going to take some time outside with the array and I wasn’t looking forward to going EVA, so I’ll tackle that once we get feet on ground” said Kate. “How long ‘till we can stop floating around here like we’re begging to get shot?”

“Twenty minutes” replied Jim. “How’s the Boss?”

“I’m going to check on her now”. Kate turned and headed out the door toward the Cabins.

Spud_Sylvia finally got around to ordering, she ordered a steak salad...

The steak was like butter in JB's mouth. Even though he'd only spent a week in The Big House, prison food had a tendency to turn you off food. The steak was a perfect antidote.

"Sorry you've got to head out, Spud," said JB, politely keeping the conversation going even though he just wanted to savour the steak. "Hopefully you'll be back before I leave, buddy."

JB finished his bourbon. Glad that he'd been able to spend a couple of days on Nouvel instead of having to finish his sentence aboard the prison barge.

Maul Montresor

"Lambast, I'm glad I found you. There's uh...well...we've got a....situation." Echo stumbled over his words.

"Yes? Well out with it already, Mr. Ramón." Lamb didn't mean to seem rude but she wasn't sure if someone had got into trouble, was hurt, or worse....something to do with the party.

"It's...about the party..."

Lamb inhaled deeply.

"What did Raven do...or was it Maul this time?...Kai?"

At that moment Maul, Kai and Vega peered around the corner to see Lamb's back facing them as she talked to Echo. Echo quickly glanced over at them and back to Lamb.

"Actually, it's not really about the party...it's..uh..." Echo was rambling at this point.

"Mr. Ramón, I need you to tell me what is going on. I'm already stressed enough as it is, trying to plan this par-"

"Uh... I THINK WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT US!" Echo blurted out over Lamb's words to prevent her from accidently ruining Kai's surprise party.

Luckily, Kai was too preoccupied with sneaking away to pay any attention as to what was being said.

The three of them quietly sneaked away from the situation. Once they we're out of ear shot they rushed down the walkway in the opposite direction of Lamb and Echo and began planning a route to the meeting location.

Her jaw slackened and Lamb tilted her head. She felt an involuntary shake as a wave of disbelief crashed into her already over loaded mind. In some ways it was nice, the unexpected teen-drama coming from a fully grown man washed away everything else that was playing on her nerves. For a brief moment Lamb was almost content in a state of pure surprise.

“What?” Is all she managed to say.

-----------------------

Kaisla jogged along between Maul and Vega behind her. She was glad they managed to dodge Lambast thanks to Echo’s quick intervention. Perhaps today wouldn’t be so bad after all. The little voice inside Kai’s mind was jumping up and down for her attention and Kai slowed down as she contemplated what it was trying to tell her. Kai stopped dead in her tracks causing Vega to bump into her. Kai turned grabbing Vaga by the shoulders with a kid-at-Christmas look on her face.

“He said we gotta talk about our relationship!”

With that, Kaisla bolted off the way they came leaving Maul and Vega feeling like bad parents that had just lost control of their child . . again.

----------------------

Echo hadn’t thought this far ahead, solving the immediate problem of letting Kai Maul and Vega get away had just happened. Now he was left with the consequences. Alone. He may have got away with it if he had managed to think of something to say while Lamb was dumbfounded by his ambush, but now she was regaining her composure. She had straightened up after a flustered moment arranging her coat and blade. Now Echo was being treated to the usual look Lamb’s face portrayed. Disappointment edged with begrudging acceptance for other people’s existence.

“What relationship would that be Mister Ramón?” The emphasis on the word Mister was so strong Echo felt like he had been poked in the chest. “I’m wondering because we agreed on the course of such things beforehand”

It was Echo’s turn to make no sense. He opened his mouth a few time and raised a finger when he thought he had come up with something to say, but to no avail. What really didn’t help was noticing Kai’s brilliant white hair reappear as she slowly peeked around the corner to watch the train-wreck get worse. Seeing Vega and Maul add their beady eyes to complete the trio of voyeuristic corner-peepers didn’t help at all.

The bouncer and Lamb could see something was drawing Echo’s attention away from the moment and they both turned to see what he was looking at. They didn’t know it, but they had caused three people to knock skulls into chins and noses as the stooges quickly ducked back.

The bouncer was enjoying the street entertainment. A Pirate station didn’t really have romantic encounters between star-crossed lovers. He didn’t know if that’s what he was looking at, but the two people in front of him didn’t look like the sort to exchange credits for an hour’s cardio workout.

“Arr, love blossoms even in the darkest places dun’it?”

Both Echo and Lamb looked at the big man, they had forgotten he was there. The bouncer was smiling benevolently at them with his fat tattooed arms folded.

“So is he like your slave but you developed feeling for him? Oh no, he used to be yours, but you freed him and now he’s come back to confess his love for you right?”

This was even more satisfying than punching the two of them into unconsciousness and the bouncer smiled even wider. Both Lamb and Echo were blushing before launching into a tirade against him.

“Slave! I’ve never owned anyone I’ll have you know and further more you can keep your beardie-wierdie face out of our business thank you so ve…”
“Who asked you ass hole? Just guard your shit-hole door and keep you’re busted up ugly ass nose out of our business thank you so.. .”

Lamb and Echo talked, or rather angrily berated, over each other glad to have a new target to attack, but when they happened to finish each other’s sentence, all the wind left their sails.
The Bouncer laughed so hard he had to put his hands on his knees to stop himself from falling over. Lamb was first to rally some composure.

“Look here Mr. Ramón, shouldn’t you be doing your job so you have something to report when Mr. Cousland asks what you have to show for your time hmm? Now, I have a heavy create to pick up and about five hour’s worth of preparations to squeeze into two hours. I suggest you get on with your task and forget about .. .this silliness while I get on with my mine. Good afternoon to you”

Echo watch Lamb stride away. She managed to stomp in the low gravity environment of the station yet still seem graceful. He dragged his hand down his face and looked at the bouncer who was recovering from his laughter.

“You’re a brave man tryin to get it on with that one” chuckled the doorman.

That deserved a comeback, but Echo couldn’t muster a witty response. Noticing the green blond and white hair of Maul Vega and Kaisla respectively withdraw from their vantage point like alligators sinking back into the water didn’t help either. Echo just took a deep breath and went to look for some intelligence to gather. He deeply hoped he could find some because right now he felt really stupid.

The big yellow Gunship had managed to make it down to the surface of a small moon and had been set down in the shadowy half of a crater on the dark side, where Kate and Jim were continuing to fashion their repairs as best they could.

Most of the engine compartment looked like it was held together with duct tape and the ship’s exterior did nothing to suggest the ship was less than two weeks old. The Rocinante looked like it had been out in the black for a century and had just returned from the other side of a black hole!

Effie was resigned to only doing light work inside the ship, under strict orders from Kate, as she was still recovering from her injuries. Being forced to not do any of the heavy lifting, wasn’t actually something that Effie was frustrated by in the slightest. She didn’t mind pushing a vacuum around once in a while, or even doing the dishes by hand, if they were in power conservation mode, but welding and lying underneath bulkhead panels covered in grease and oil, not so much. Kate on the other hand, being a classic tomboy, had no such reservations. She loved getting her hands dirty.

Effie keyed the comms and called the other two. “Before you guys head over to that crash site, I’ve knocked us up some lunch.”

“Copy that” replied Jim, “We’ve just about done all we can out here”

“On our way” confirmed Kate, as the two made their way up the steps into the ship’s airlock.
