Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Sorry, I should be more grateful, less suspicious."

It was all plausible enough, but I had so many questions. I was behaving very badly to the woman who had probably saved my life. I owed her more.

"We should be safe enough here, I'll alert dock security. You could put in a claim but shouldn't hold out too much hope. Let's drink tea and relax a while. Work out our next move. Maybe leave the station, take a look out there.""

"No!" said Willow sharply. "Um, I mean, I can deal with it and I don't want anything to do with that shower of bastards in security"

The officer that had interrogated Willow had enjoyed picking on someone that was easy to intimidate, and he'd confiscated her best Power-Link.

"Besides, I've got to tidy up and fix the doors, you know? And if I leave that embalming fluid on the floor much longer, I'll never get the stains out"

It was nice to sit down with someone she could talk with and sip tea, but work had to be done.

"But I could do with some company while I work, if you're up to it? I mean, I know you should be resting, but I can start in the cargo hold and we can look over your pod like you wanted"

"And anyway, Maul is already out looking for any trace of your ship on the beacon network"

Willow Thorn“Hey, thanks for the offer. My ship was broken into. I could do with a ships computer core if you got a spare. Thanks”

Maul was beginning to board his ship when the screen on his wrist lit up. He had loads of spare hardware scattered around The Ghoul. Without even sending a message to Willow, he contacted dock personnel to send a team to deliver the computer core from his ship to hers.

Once the cargo handlers had the equipment he launched to set out to scan the Nav’s.
16 Nov 2022, 4:27pm
"I would prefer to transfer my pod."

"You're right let's get this tip cleared up. It smells disgusting. Wait, embalming fluid? Oh no - tell me you don't have dead bodies on here!"

I wouldn't be surprised if this was her mobile mortuary. I will need a week in the shower Best not to mention that she smelled pretty bad too.

Wind back. " Hang on. Are you telling me that guy has contacted you since that little fiasco back there? Did it not occur to you that he might have set up the whole thing?"

I could't believe she'd almost forgotten to mention it.

"Ohh Willow. What am I going to do with you."

Willow was about to reassure Descartes that she didn't currently have any bodies in cold storage, when Descartes cast doubt over Maul’s integrity. She paused mid-sip with a doubtful yet inquisitive look on her face.

“What ? You think that dye-job junkie is together enough to like, plan an ambush and be all deceptive?”

Willow couldn't remember much of what happened in the fight. She was busy being impressed by an off-the-leash Descartes beating the big guy to the ground, but she was pretty sure that Maul got his ass kicked.

“Really?” asked Willow sincerely “but like, he’s a lot like you if you think about it”

The words she had just said echoed in Willows head. She had just compared Descartes to a criminal drifter onion-head that looked like he dressed in whatever he found on the floor that day.

“No no, I don’t mean like, you’re a waster or a substance abuser” corrected Willow with a cold feeling coming over her. She started talking quickly to dig herself out of the hole.

“I mean like, you got stuff going around in there..” Willow pointed to Descartes head “..that needs to come out here.. “The questing finger rested in front of Descartes lips “..before you can, like sort it out you know? And deal”

“That’s what I mean you know? Look at him; you can see it in everything he does. He’s carry a weight around and he’s trying to deal with it himself. That’s how you two are alike, I’m not saying you’re a waster you know.. I just mess up and over analyze . .and then I say stuff and.. I get all .. “

She shrugged with a nervous smile.

“Like this. Your great.. .Sorry"
16 Nov 2022, 6:50pm
Again, she surprised me with her insight. I was used to dealing with problems myself. It was a habit born out of necessity. Maybe that's why I found it difficult to accept her simply offered help. Despite her attempts to portray a tough exterior, she was a genuinely good person. Albeit with an unusually sombre taste in clothes. I felt close to her for some reason that I tried not to think about.

I gently moved her hand away from my mouth. It felt a little too close. Too.. intimate. I might have blushed.

"Yes. I think he could easily be behind it. Why would those muggers jump us right after I met him. Another co-incidence?" And who was the woman talking to him? I didn't notice what happened to him in the confusion."

'Me like him?'

I contacted dock transport to arrange the transfer of my pod. I wanted to check it out in the privacy of my own hold.

"Let's get this done. Have you got a mask? That awful smell is destroying my nose. Maybe we can find a better place for your sock." Smiling.
16 Nov 2022, 7:39pm
“Oh, you saw that” she took the sock from under her belt where she had tucked it.

She kept it balled up because it had a unicorn on it. It was a black unicorn with red eyes, but it was still a unicorn.

“Yeah so I got everything you’ll need” said Willow happy to be let off the hook again “And you're gonna need a mask stat. I mix my own cleaning chemicals and they are harsh, you know? Maybe goggles too. Come on”

Willow took Descartes to her impressive tool station in the cargo hold and kitted her up. She even supplied her guest with a mag-wheeled stool in case Descartes needed to sit down. She was recovering well, but she had recently taken an explosion to the face, by the look of her injuries.

At the bottom of a big green tool box that hadn’t been tipped out, Willow retrieved a plasma pistol. It was a bit heavy for her thanks to the station's spin, so she took a laser pistol instead.

Meeting Descartes eye, Willow explained “Just in case they come back you know” she put the pistol on her hip and stood up. “You can take one if you want. As long as we’re on our ships, it’s not against station law”

“Right, I haven’t touched your pod since they pulled it apart, but it’s just over here”

Willow was a little hurt that Descartes didn’t want her help, but Willow had admitted that the pod was more advanced than what she was used to; and hay, it was Descartes pod in the end.

“So, the med stroke mortuary is next door, and like, I’ll make a start in there, kay? Oh and like, there’s no music, that’s tied to the computer that was totally stolen, Sorry”

Willow was about to ask if Descartes needed anything before she prepared her pod for transfer, when there was a loud clanging knock at the open cargo hatch.

“Hay Yo!” came a heavy Federation accent “I’m lookin for a Willow Thorn”

A dockworkers head appeared in the gangway. The stocky man looked around the messy ship and lingered on Descartes face, clearly examining the scars as he climbed in.

“You two had a fallin out or somthin? Whatever, I got a delivery from ah, let me see now. Maul Monst.. Monst.. Fuck it, Mister Munster. Put ya thumb here”

The man thrust a pad towards the women and waited. He was leaning on a replacement Ship's Computer Core.

Willow hadn’t mentioned the Maul problem again, because she had caused it. After the good sense Descartes had just made about the man, she felt real stupid for taking a computer core from him. Willow glanced at Descartes, feeling like a kid caught with her hand in the cookie jar.

Maul was resting his eyes as he let the scan run on the Nav beacon. As far as the Nav was concerned, it was being scanned by a security ship and was giving the appropriate readings.

His mind wandered and lingered on thoughts that he was sure he'd buried and put to rest. Faces of old friends, his parents. He'd wanted to reach out for so long but chose not to. Convinced that he was the cause of all the chaos in their lives, he'd refrained from making any contact. Some friends for months. His parents; it had been for years.

That familiar sound of the Nav scan came to an end. He opened his eyes to his 4th list of numerous in depth logs. Scouring the logs would have to wait until he was back on the station.

As he began to press the button to open the galaxy map and plan his route home, he noticed a slight wobble in his hand. He closed his eyes again, tighter this time, clenched his fist and took a few deep breaths. His short sloppy meditation session was abruptly brought to an end by the sound of multiple ships ripping out of supercruise on their approach to the Nav beacon.

"All ships must comply to an immediate mandatory scan. Please remain calm."

A mass message broadcast from from one of the many security ships zooming around to begin their scans.

"The Nav breach must have alerted them." Maul thought to himself as he shook his head, disappointed in sloppy work.

He reached under the right hand panel that housed the control stick and flicked a switch to enable an array of scramblers to fill the security ships sensors with ghost blips. After checking his own sensors to confirm it was working he switched The Ghoul into silent running. Disregarding the obnoxiously loud warnings and sparks from the center console, he moved out of range of the Nav before charging up the FSD to head back to the station to report in with Willow and the other woman who's name he had yet to learn.
19 Nov 2022, 5:50pm
Exasperated, I looked at her and shrugged. No point in repeating myself.

"How about I leave you to clean up the chemicals, looks like your area of expertise."

'Unlike common-sense, which is obviously not.' I thought, perching on the stool to watch her work.

I had to stop my mind wandering into areas that it should not. Too much time alone with no human contact. She could have been taken by those half-wit muggers, we both could. It was careless of us both. Not the first time that I'd been followed, wanted by someone. An old enemy. This time though, it was far less professional. Could it be the same organisation. The same corrupt Imperial security boss. Was it just a diversion to give them a free-hand to search my pod. Did they have my ship? I should just walk away. Not drag her into my world. Not put her in the way of more danger. Maybe I should re-locate to Colonia. Leave Willow behind.

"How long have you been working for yourself?"

Try some ordinary conversation. Small-talk. I knew almost nothing about her.

“Umm, jeez .. Six months I guess, maybe over; like eight? But I’ve done what I do for years you know? With the family”

Expending a bit of effort, Willow put the new Core in a rack and then tried to pretend that whole delivery thing didn’t happen. She turned to face Descartes and saw her vandalized pod behind the recovering woman. It made Willow sad to think someone that badly hurt was left alone out in the Coalsack, one of the darkest places in the galaxy. She could believe fate was a thing; it had made its self obvious by placing Willow in the right place to find her.

She realised she had been staring again; if she would at least blink when she did it, maybe people wouldn’t be so creeped out by her.

“Um so yeah, I’ll get on with that, put everything else away, repair the forced lock, and then we can go to my Python to chill out. I’ll need a looong shower, you know? Should only take an hour or so”

Willows little frame puffed up as she was about to impart some information she was proud of.

“I got a first class cabin fitted in one of the large module slots on the Bramble. I practically live on that ship so I made it home you know?”

With mask and goggles in place, Willow got to work on the spilled embalming fluid. Her soft, quiet voice was almost lost thanks to the mask, so she had to shout for Descartes to hear her.

“Like what about you? You don’t say much about your self. Do you enjoy the allure of being a woman of mystery?”
19 Nov 2022, 7:15pm
"Six months?" ' Novice. What have I got myself into. Leave.'

"OK. That's not long to be working in your own. It's tough." I watched her fitting the new computer, wondering how many little spies Mr Munster had hidden away in there.

"I remember my first year, got myself into lots of little scrapes. Untill I got lucky. We all need a lucky break."

No need to go down that road. Change the subject. I smiled.

"'woman of mystery? Not me. I just spend too much time away from people." Far too long.

"I more or less lived on my Corvette. It's slow, but its roomy." Did she mean an hour in the shower? I would fall asleep in there.

"Sounds like a plan. I need to book a couple of centrifuge sessions, but that can wait."
19 Nov 2022, 7:56pm
“So, it shows you know, but you’re not the only one. Like, so many pilots are like that. That’s one of the reasons I do what I do”

Willow paused in what she was doing and a far way demeanour took over her body.

“Coz it’s like, so many people die with no one to care; and their family, if they have one, don’t get a chance to say good bye”

A small sigh escaped before she got back to work.

“So I do what I can to find out who they were, help them look the way they did before, and try to bring them home one last time”

“Its real sad, but it helps their loved ones to know someone took care of them at the end, and I can help them deal with the loss”

“For so many more, my hands are the last human contact they have. I do what I can, take a beautiful picture, and put them in the book so they at least have some sort of memorial”

“Any way, a whole Corvette all to yourself huh? I’d have loved that as a kid. I lived on a Asp with mom dad and three sisters and three brothers. Imagen that!”
19 Nov 2022, 8:37pm
"I can't imagine that."

I guess she had a point about looking after the dead. But a book of the dead?

"I try to avoid them. Most I come across are in pieces, or vapourized."

Apart from the 'Old Man'. I definitely couldn't go there. I looked into the middle distance in case my eyes leaked. Where did that come from. Not now.

"I'll help you tidy up. My speciality." Not to mention obsession.

"Tell me where everything goes." I said, holding up a small item of clothing.

"Why did they tip all that stuff out. Hiding something?"
19 Nov 2022, 9:00pm
“Ha! Not on this ship. All my good stuff was transferred to the Bramble. Guess they like, had some amateur scavenger in them. Like, you should see me go, I’d have picked this ship clean as well as running off with the data”

She looked at the spaces in her tool store that should hold her primary weapons “They took my guns, but like, I got better on the Barb anyway. Like totally amateurs as I said; my tools are worth way more you know?”

Turning around, she looked at the small black lacy thing Descartes was holding. Willow was glad she stayed on top of her washing. Without thinking, Willow put her hand on Descartes cheek and thumbed away a small tear that was sitting in her lashes.

“Is it too dry in here for you? Chuck that in the locker beside the bed, I’ll manually reset the atmospherics for you. Anyway, let’s get this done, coz I got a centrifuge I can set up in the Bramble's cargo bay. It’s a bit small, but I’d like to take you for a spin. Like, to say thanks for keeping me company”

Centrifuge, in a Python? Hardly seems possible. Plus it would not be useable on the station, and I wanted to be sure I was fit enough to fly in space - before I got there.

"Ah. No. It has to be official and certificated before I can fly. But thank you."

The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to leave, do something. I could forget about my 'lost' ship. Save everyone a lot of trouble. But now I was being followed. Again. I had to deal with that. Colonia was sounding like a good idea. Move on. Start again. No, take a few ships with me. A companion would be good.

Think straight. If 'they' had my ship, then they found nothing useful or valuable on it. Why else would they still be chasing me and trashing my pod?

Transport arrived to move it.

"I'll check it out later." I said. We'll soon have this tip cleaned up."
