***HIP 118213 system, Lorenz Hub, StarDate 28.12.3301 ***In a sentence: I've found a (possible) good candidate for a new base of operations.
As large as the galaxy is, finding just the right system to call home isn't easy. For starters it must have a large, accessible station with reasonable amenities and trading opportunities - and not require 15 minutes in supercruise to reach them. A pristine rock belt would be a huge plus. And most important of all (to me), is that it not be under the thumb of the major factions, with their Little Emperors and their unceasingly destructive struggles for power.
To be sure, this system has minor factions aplenty - I'm counting six local entities (including the inevitable crime syndicate), most of them with highly unimaginative names to accompany their equally banal political aspirations. The least offensive one has considerable influence, however, and owns the large station. Some kind of tree-hugging hippie types, but I think I can deal with them. They keep the station clean and they don't water down the booze. It's key to get on the locals' good side right away without being too obvious about it; a charitable contribution here, a trade mission there, and make sure to bring back some goodies for them on the return trips. They profit, you profit, and before you know it we're all besties. It's good to see mostly green on the scanner when you're hauling the pricy goods.
So I'm taking the Ramona out & back on some milk runs, putting up some flyers for their townhall meetings, and scoping out the nearby systems carefully while I'm at it. There's always a rat hiding in the cargo bin somewhere, and that's fine - I just want to make sure I spot him first.
