Keeping fit in zero gravity is important, but can be more difficult and easily put off during those long trips away from the bubble. I’ve seen many commanders who have come back from exploration expeditions, looking very frail and having to spend weeks in a gravity recovery programmes, because they have not look after themselves. There are nanobot supplements we can take these days to help with tissue regeneration, but nothing quite matches real exercise under gravity. One trick I learned on my last long range outing in the DBX was to set the ship on auto-pilot, making continuous large circles in space to simulate gravity on the ship. I’d let it run like that for an hour or two each day while I settled down for the night, getting a few pull ups and press ups in. My next long haul outing will be in `Lost Property` the Anaconda I bought two months ago. Its more or less ready to go when I am, though there are still a few bits and pieces to buy. I want to get a decent gym set up this time, since there will be a bit more room.
I’m selling off a few old modules this weekend, clearing out some junk. I’m also on the lookout for a treadmill for the Anaconda, in preparation for my long trip in a couple of months. I’ll also take part in the local 5km weekly run at the station – a good chance to let off some steam and hang out with a few people. The run is around the perimeter of the station, a nice picturesque trail with mud, puddles, trees, all under 1g - it makes you believe you are actually on earth!
