EXPLORATION LOG 9 : Bump and Grind

30 - 03 - 08 22:38

Last day of the weekend, but it feels like a continuation of a working week. One does need to stay productive out here, otherwise monotony will weasel its way into your daily routine, making the journey feel endless. Noting worth reporting found today, well nothing worth taking an image of anyway.

I did happen upon a huge ten probe water body, but a big blue ball on space is hardly an interesting image. Tonight bedding down moon is quite large, giving almost a half G to keep the quilt on my bed.

After a while, one is tempted to take some risks to inject a little thrill into the hum-drum jump scoop scan repeat of exploration. After reaching another waypoint and fining no trace of my uncle, I gave into such a temptation. I scanned a large high metal world close to the prim star, boasting almost five Gs. I decided to go land on it just for a laugh and test of my skill. I popped round to the dark side, where the temperature is merely infernal so as not to melt the Ass as I made my approach.

The landing went well, but the take-off went wrong. It is so dark here, one mistook a dust covered outcrop for a shadow from the ships lights. A high G take-off is a skill of its own, and one does best gathering some forwards momentum before pitting the speed against gravities embrace. I had forward momentum alright and dumbed the Ass right into an unforgiving iron rock.

I think it caught the SRV hanger door, pivoting the nose of the Ass into the ground. I'm alright and off that planet now, but the Ass has lost a bit of hull integrity as the shields didn't hold up, and I can't open the SRV bay. Once I've had a bit of a snack and a cup of sweet tea, I'll see what the auto repair unit can do to sort out the problems.

The moral of the story is, don't let boredom tempt you into taking unnecessary risks. Out here, one is completely alone and even a small problem can be dangerous.
