Pt 3: HashimotoSmith, like Hashimoto, was a MA in the Federal Navy. She sometimes gives him crap for not getting his stellar combat badge for service on a warship, and not making Chief. He gives it right back, telling her it was only because FedNav had a quota for midget female chiefs and she got his spot. It is all good natured ribbing, but the way they do it makes it hard for anyone that has not been involved with the military to see it as such.
That lack of understanding extends to the command staff. Smith was reprimanded by the Henderson Security CO for disparaging Hashimoto. “Unacceptable. She is not a midget,” explained the CO. I don’t think it was the word “midget” that caused a problem, but combining it with “female.” The CO was no doubt covering his ass since some puke in HR probably would have had a field day if word got back to them about a supposed hostile work environment. Yet, nothing is ever said about how the other jackoffs treat Hashimoto. Things like not being able to find her ammo requisition, or misplacing her leave approvals is apparently not important.
No one has figured out that Smith is the one busting through their little passive aggressive roadblocks when it comes to us hired guns. The man has a talent for finding things. Extra ammo for a AR-50. A case of Harma. Baby wipes. Even damn peach pie, with real peaches. Most of it he gets by cutting side deals with the ship crews when they bring in scheduled supplies. He says that being Henderson they are rarely checked for contraband, so it is easy to hide extra items in their manifests.
He almost has enough parts to make a small still. Since we hired guns are the only ones that patrol outside the compound, the plan is for Gulati and me to set it up it up in a small cave about 5 clicks north of the lab. Every few days when we return from perimeter patrol, well bring back a little of the product.
It should help pass the time until this contract is up.
