Unification Day

17 Oct 2023Argon Shadowstar
Organizing an insurgency has been more of a time sink than I had originally expected, but the foundations are in place and I think I've managed to teach these rebels how to avoid getting themselves and each other killed. The system is in a strange state with the election and the transition of power now confirmed for a future date. Some of my new recruits were unexpectedly positive regarding the outcome. I found it necessary to call them all together for a discussion.

Contrary to what my recruits might believe, the election of Felicia Winters is not a positive outcome for our operation. While it is true that she is not the militant type that her opposition is, she is popular and successful. She is a defensive president, which is precisely what the Federation needs right now. It is easy to fight a guerilla war against a militant faction. Their armies are always on the move, rarely ever in a defensive position, and reliant on supply lines which are vulnerable. A defensive regime is difficult to raid. Armies on the home front are comfortable, well supported, and have less distance to cover when responding to incursions. Socially, Archer would have split the Federation, potentially causing a civil war. That would have worked in our favor, probably even doing most of our work for us. As it stands, Winters is likely to unite the Federation, which is exactly what it needs in the face of armed revolution and an alien invasion. This will make our job much more challenging.

Some of my recruits suggested we reach out to the opposition. I immediately informed them that this would be a disastrous idea. While Archer's supporters are politically opposed to Winters, they are also militant patriots. They are, essentially, even more ideologically opposed to us than the liberal party. We will not find allies within the Federation now, so we must operate alone. I even have reason to suspect my new recruits as the election may have compelled them to reconsider their new allegiance. It is now even more important that I distance myself from this insurgency, for their agenda was never totally aligned with my campaign. We are not enemies, but now I am not sure we can fully trust each other. So, tomorrow I will leave them to their own devices. I have done what I can to help them, and if they continue their mission to destabilize the Federation, that alone will benefit my campaign in the long run. If they do not, then so be it.

I must admit, I am not as ideologically opposed to Winters as I am to Hudson. Had Winters been president when my people were being targeted by the Achenarians, the Federation may have stayed out of it. Who knows what might have happened. Perhaps the Shadowstar Imperium would have survived. But we will never know. Winters is a strong defender. She is favored by the majority right now, but Federation politics makes determining merit difficult as actions and achievements can be easily faked without an authority to oversee such matters. Therefore, my mission has not changed. I must continue my campaign against the superpowers, and put Winters's regime to the test. If she is the meritorious leader she seems to be, perhaps she will be the one to defeat me and lead humanity to a brighter future, made stronger by the fight that I will bring her. If not, then my quest continues. One way or another, I will find the leader destined to bring forth the future supremacy of Man.
