In reality, soldiers are specialized with different weapons and they work together. NPCs are following this concept as well: Sharpshooter, Comando, Striker, Enforcer.

The concept of shields is lame though, especially the thing that 1% shield can tank enormous amount of damage AKA damage do not bleed through a dropping shield.

So, for CZ, either adapt your weapon/play stile with your team, or use 2x Karma L-6

Totally agree with this, but there are many people who prefer to play solo. Unfortunately the game is increasingly shifting priorities towards team play. I think their attempt to sit on two chairs at the same time is not a good solution. In any case, as long as I use plasma and 2x Karma L-6, as you said ))

Before Karma L-6, I was doing CZs quite effectively with dual Executioner setup. Silent death from the rooftops.

Both setups are very efficient in clearing NPC masses from distance. While with thermal/kinetic or shotgun you need to be somewhat closer and things really can go wrong fast if outnumbered.

If the High CZ was bugged correctly I could get 40 million in one match. If not, the most I got was 25 million in one match. But typically I am in the 11-15 million range depending on the settlement layout. Using Dual Karma L-6 and Tormentor.
Before that I just used the Intimidator (bcuz I like to get close), an L-6 for mobs of opportunity, and a Tormentor. But with that I usually was only 3-6 million per match.

what about SMGs?

Paul Glynnwhat about SMGs?

Plasma SMG == garbage
Takada/Karma SMGs - thermal/kinetic BS with limited range and effectives. Good for PvP but sub optimal for PvE due to the swarming mechanics. Once you hit an NPC, then the NPC and all hostiles know where are you.

For CZ PvE Karma L-6 is the king with huge AoE and damage, followed by Manticore Executioner which is capable of killing everything from range with 2 shots. Shotgun is good in its current state but if frontier reconsider the scope mechanics on it it will be good only in close and personal engagements.
Thermal/kinetic - performance in CZ is poor vs NPCs, but because of hitscan nature of Takada and fast projectile speed of Karma it is best option vs. players that do not follow navmesh and jump around.

For mission running you just need to know how stealth works - best weapons are the one that can one shot from silence enemies. My favorite setup is Maverick with a NV mod combined with fully silenced Executioner and Tormentor (both indoor and outdoor).

Has anyone used Combat Movement Speed modification? Wondering if it really makes a difference in practice, if it is just "nice but meh", or not worth it at all.

I have a Grade 3 Dominator suit that I bought specifically because of that modification, and while the difference is only slight, it's still a major advantage. The most limiting thing about being on foot is movement speed, and outside of that modification, it's a hard cap for everyone. Although if you main an Executioner rifle, you're already way slower than everyone else so you won't gain any advantage.

I was just thinking about it since it seems like it can provide a reasonable advantage. I have a 4th slot to fill and I thought that mod might make the biggest difference. I currently have Damage Resistance, Faster Shield Regen, and Night Vision. I've considered Sprint Duration but I rarely reach exhaustion anyway. I've considered Jump Assist but I've always been able to get where I need without much trouble. I've considered Improved Battery Capacity for less frequent trips to recharge, but that is mainly for convenience rather than a true advantage, likewise with Extra Ammo Capacity. Trying to weigh my options.
