Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Lambast Mercy

"One, last, thing, Mister Montresor? What is going to happen I wonder? Are we going to arrive at the memorial, and I'll see a freshly dug hole. Make it quick, you'll say. Then I suppose you want me to kick your corps into the grave and fill it in before the warden sees. Is that it?"

"Hmm, no. There are a few friends I would do that for, but you are not one of them. For some unfathomable reason, I quite like having you are around"

Maul had began to stand up before Lambast had even answered, knowing that she’d likely agree but he didn’t expect those exact words to come out of her mouth. He dropped back down into the booth and sat silently looking at her.

“How’d you—“

Of course she already knew, Lambast wasn’t an idiot. She had other ways of gathering intel on a person without relying solely on Maul’s abilities to do so.

“No, Lamb. I—“

Again, he hadn’t figured out the right words and order just yet. It was easy to think things, say them in his own mind but actually saying them aloud was proving difficult.

“…I haven’t been able to face the fact they’re gone. This is one of the things I’d been running from. I- I’m ready now though. I just need someone to be with me and…”

He closed his eyes and shook his head then looking directly down at the table before continuing.

“…you’re the closest thing to family I have left, Lamb.”
10 May 2024, 8:50pm
She understood the words, but the concept was alien to her. Almost alien. When she was young, living on a large settlement in Eravate, her best friend from school went through the same thing Maul had.

Kaisla's mother and farther we're murdered over a an insignificant loan before Kaisla's thirteenth birthday. Back then, Lambast hadn't matured into the detached sociopath she was today, she was still growing into the mind set. Young Lambast saw how much pain her best friend was in for years after the murders, and felt a narrow slice of Kaisla's suffering too. It was one of the few memories Lambast wished she didn't have.

Comforting a young Kaisla was easy at the time, and still was today, but Maul was.. .. not Lambast's adopted little sister. Still, she knew the basics, and did honestly care about the man, so she made an effort.

Reaching across the table, Lambast took Mauls hand and gripped it tightly.

"What ever you need Maul. I'm here for you. Would you like to get some flowers on the way? I don't think real flowers would be a problem to find on this station"

Maul squeezed Lambast’s hand but still avoided eye contact.

“The McKinley’s have flower shop near the columbarium. I grew up with their daughter Misty, hell, she probably runs the shop these days. We can stop on the way.”

His mother and father were involved with the agriculture business that the station was so well known for. His mother, Molly, used to work on the automation systems within the station that were responsible for calculating the likely health of the various crop fields dotted around the stations hab ring. His father, James, on the other hand had dealt more with animals and the dirtier side of the job in general. Though, when needed, he’d be sent planet side for business negotiations with the corpos in higher positions. Sending a well spoken “Everyman” who knew the inner workings of the business always tended to work when it came to wage negotiations for the station workers.

Later at the columbarium

Maul stood silently next to Lambast and stared at his parents names that had been engraved into a plaque on a wall that stretched almost endlessly in both directions. This wall was simply one in a row of others that contained the cremated remains of station residents and employees.
He gripped the bundle of flowers tight causing his knuckles to turn white.

“You deserved better. I’m so sorry mom…dad…”said Maul as he placed the bundle of flowers in the metal ring next to his parent’s names.

He then looked at Lambast with a look bursting with sorrow.

“It was supposed to be me, you know. Tessa was looking for me…but I was gone, ran away…and they paid for it…”
10 May 2024, 10:10pm
Well, yes, that's what you do, almost made it out of Lamb's mouth, but now wasn't time for her black and white approach to the events as she saw them.

Maul always blamed him self for everything, it was one of his most annoying traits. On the other hand, he did like to kick the hive, but these days he usually did his best to kick the hornets back in before it got out of control. The problem with that was he tried to do it by him self, to avoid dragging anyone else into his mess.

Even Lambast knew she needed help from time to time, and willingly asked for it. It took a little mental gymnastics to spin that one past her narcissistic tendencies, but she was at home with her psychosis. If only that was a talent she could pass on to Maul.

Noting she could say would help him. He would tell Lambast why she was wrong, and how she didn't understand. He wanted to blame himself and carry the guilt. All she could do for the man was put an arm around him, and gently rub his shoulder. No words meant no judgment. Maul was sentencing himself already.

(Previous)

I provided a somewhat annoyed, disdaining look for the bowing gesture, then just looked at the entrance again.

"I would just like to go. The less time, that I have to spend near Azimuth, the better. And flying in someone else's ship... even if she was nice enough to make a seat for my 'thick' body. And I like that it is this thick, ... too much."

My right arm stretched out, hand flat, as if to say 'Let's go in'.

"You... go first. Maybe. I would prefer to have someone to pull, if I get stuck, rather than... push, in wrong places. Unless you would like to earn a slap, or punch."
11 May 2024, 1:04pm
“Well, as you wish. I’ll take the lead then… and don’t you fret, I’m certainly not out to touch or push anything. Especially not if it’s gonna earn me a fist sandwich.”

I shook my head and spun on my heel towards the ship. Moments later, I was back at the airlock I had left earlier, slipping back inside. Honestly, I didn’t find the space too cramped - it was pretty much what you’d expect from ships of a medium size. But the design was a whole other debate…. that was indeed quite austere, almost spartan.

Just past the airlock, I paused and half-turned to see how my passenger was managing to board the ship.
11 May 2024, 2:00pm
“I more said it is better so you can pull by the arms… if needed.”

I followed, and, expectedly… had less of an easier time. While standard airlocks certainly left some room for the average individual, I was… no longer exactly average. At least, the frame of the doorway was only a little narrower, but I still had to get a little… creative, to get my big backside in. I stopped once through and let out a breath.

“It is a good thing I am used to this already.”, I remarked to my - to be - pilot. “I hope the corridors are less narrow.”
11 May 2024, 5:36pm
“So far, so good… the corridor isn’t any narrower than the airlock, that’s for sure. If anything, it’s wider. Take a look here…” I pointed to the edge of the airlock, where a good chunk of wall extended on both sides before meeting the corridor walls at a right angle.

“Shouldn’t be too much of a hassle, I reckon.”

I turned around and continued my stride towards the heart of the ship, the cockpit.

After a bit, I paused and glanced back at my passenger.

“Everything alright back there?”
11 May 2024, 7:22pm
"Good is maybe a strong word.", I replied, pausing momentarily to prepare the second half of the answer. "But, I... 'accepted' these, challenges, by having this body, and being so big."

I squeezed through the second, inner airlock door, then gave an answer to the inquiring look, and question.

"It, works. Maybe, it is not as wide as the passageways on my Phantom, but I may not get stuck anywhere... unless a door closes too early, or you think I should try to squeeze into a maintenance vent."

I paused for a second.

"It would only be funny for you."
11 May 2024, 8:50pm
“Well, now… speaking of which… do you really never think, not even once, that it can sometimes be impractical?”

This question had been burning a hole in my pocket for quite a while. I had no issues with it, even admired the ability to cope with a tough spot… but I couldn’t imagine never having the slightest doubt. But maybe I already knew the answer, since she seemed more comfortable hopping onto this ship in her own carrier.

“Why on the stars would I think you should crawl into a maintenance shaft? Just stay chill and make your way to the cockpit, you’re almost there. And once you’re seated, leave the rest to me, until we hit our destination.”

I gave her an encouraging nod.

“And getting stuck in doors is not something I find remotely amusing. I’ve seen good folks get seriously banged up by such blasted things. But… that was another time, another place, and under heavy fire.”

And that’s not something I wanted to delve into here, I added in thought. Oddly enough, in her presence, I often found myself chatting way more than usual.
11 May 2024, 9:06pm
"I was just stating.", I said. "And, maybe, it could have occurred to you as a... weird joke. I know a friend who that would come to."

Of course, said friend was also, maybe a little unreasonably, into excessive curvature. Or mine, at least, and weirder or less restrained in some other aspects than me.

"Yes, it is impractical. I know." Though my tone indicated that it didn't really bother me. "But it was my choice to become like this... maybe, partially. It, kind of... began to happen, by accident, then I chose to accept, it. And ..."

I awkwardly gazed in a random direction.

"I may have caused it to get out of hand. Slightly."

Not that it being my fault that my body was so disproportionate was any kind of news to me. Hadn't it been for my mental state and relative lack of awareness at the time, things would likely have stayed more reasonable. But just more. I looked ahead again.

"It, occurs to me, now... I could have given you, the measurements, for my... body. Or, at least, the hips. And maybe the thighs. But I hope they made the seat big enough."
12 May 2024, 7:54pm
Lambast Mercy Nothing she could say would help him. He would tell Lambast why she was wrong, and how she didn't understand. He wanted to blame himself and carry the guilt. All she could do for the man was put an arm around him, and gently rub his shoulder. No words meant no judgment. Maul was sentencing himself already.

While still staring at the plaque on the wall, Maul wrapped his arm around Lambast and took a deep breath in preparation for what had to be said next.

"Thanks Lamb...and I really am sorry for just up and, well, vanishing like I did. I have no excuses, just irrational reasoning to back up the cause. Can't promise it won't happen again. But unlike these past few years, I feel like I just want to move forward, accepting the past this time instead of trying to forget it."

"You don't have to accept my apology. I just want you to know that I am truly sorry."
12 May 2024, 8:16pm
She wanted to say, you are who you are, and to expect any change in your usual behaver is irrational it in it's self. Hugging something that looked like Maul in public was making her uncomfortable, but thanks to Kaisla, she knew things like this had to happen from time to time; it was best to just go with the flow. Lambast did after all, care about Maul.

She'd listened to many of Mauls apologies before. There was always a task left half done, or he'd let people down. More often than not, she had to clean up the various bodily excreta he was cacked in after passing out in room she'd supplied for him. This time, the apology felt bigger, less driven by social necessity or embarrassment, so Lambast wasn't about to cheapen it for him.

Waiting as long as she could before feeling too uncomfortable with the silence, Lambast finely spoke.

"Yes, well, if there was going to be a last straw with me, you would have known the limits of my patience for you years ago. I put it down to the company you keep; thanks to you being so easily influenced that is. The chap with the lighting bolts shaved into his head for example. Call a thing like that a 'friend' your social adjustment is bound to be skewed"

He thought hard for a minute about who Lambast was referring to with the “lighting bolt hair” but fell short of an answer. Besides, there were too many questionable hair style choices amongst his usual company to even remember a particular one.

“I could stand here and blame the people around me for my mistakes but that’s all I’ve ever done. This one was all me. I chose to go this path and now I’m choosing to go a different one.”

He took a step away from Lambast and turned to look at her with an unwavering gaze.

“I’m going to keep doing what I’ve always done because it’s what I’m good at. I may not be leaving some grandiose mark on the galaxy or solving any of the pressing issues that the Galnet news cycle bombards us with daily, but for all the bad I’ve done and harm I’ve caused, I’ve done some good as well. Not in a long time, but there was a time when I did. Now though, I’ve got some wrongs to make right out there.”

His stern look turned to a slight smirk as his body appeared to relax a little from its previous tense form.

“Ya know, I once heard someone say "we can't change what's done, we can only move on" and Lamb, I reckon it's about time I put those ghosts to rest and move on."
13 May 2024, 10:16am
Oh, there was so much to say but Maul was going through something. Just because she couldn't understand what he was doing, she wasn't going to do anything to upset it. It could be interesting to observe.

"Hm, very well reverent Montresor, the exorcist. And what ship are you going to be using to move on I wonder?"
