Pratchett's Disc, HIP 74290 system

A Dolphin class ship appeared, 8km from the station. It was adrift and tumbling; smoke pouring into space from numerous holes in its hull. All attempts at communications were unanswered, though the lights on the ship kept blinking on and off. At first it was attributed to the damage, until one of the service crewmen, on the bridge at that time, realized there was a pattern. Closer investigation made it apparent that it was an old earth form of communication known then as Morse code. The lights continued to flash the same pattern, which was identified as a three letter sequence, SOS.

The towing ship latched onto the Dolphin, with its magnetic grapples; beginning its flight towards the station entrance. During the transition, the answer to the archaic codes meaning was discovered. It was a signal of distress. From its appearance, the ship was beyond distress; amazing the tow pilot that anyone was alive on a ship so badly damaged.

This made little difference to the stations security chief, who had a full contingent of personnel waiting near the landing pad. Medical personnel were notified to be ready; just in case.
