General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Ten tensed up as Luke started to speak, her eyes widening as her gaze slowly shifted to the man. Her prosthetic hand tapping rapidly against the metal wall. Something appeared to be clearly wrong.
13 Oct 2016, 12:12am
"Uhh... I mean.... If you want left alone just say so..." Luke said nervously. Backing off just out of arms reach. He'd never fought anyone with cybernetics hand to hand before, and had no intentions of finding out how that might turn out for him. Of course, he had his gun, but he really didn't want to use it on Ten.

*Aww man, I think I've fucked up big time here*He thought as he raised his arms in front of him both defensively and non-threateningly... Or so he hoped. *Where's Jacob when you need him? He was literally on his way out a minute ago*

Heavy combat mag boots thudded as a man in dark attire approached the bar. He scanned the bar looking for a familiar face. To his dismay everyone was a stranger. "Excuse me" he asked the bartender as she was making drinks, "I'm looking for 2 men". "According to my intel they are regulars here, and both are members of the Kumo Crew". "They were last seen in a python at this station. I believe they are heading back to Kumo controlled space". "They are extremely dangerous men, they just came from the LHS 215 system, where they assassinated a High ranking Federation official on his way to the Nanomam System". He pulled out a tablet and showed the bartender the pictures of the men. "Yes", she replied. "I have seen them, They came by 2 days ago and ordered drinks". "They didn't stay long however, I didn't talk to them". "Thanks" he replied. "I've been tracking them for a week now". "I've been jumping for 2 days straight and I need a drink and a good place to crash". After ordering a glass of scotch or the closest thing the bar had to it, he sat down at a table and slowly drank the alcohol.

"I'm not going back..." Ten mumbled, looking past Luke. Her breathing started to shallow as her metal hand stiffened and her gaze shifted about.

Cartlidge put his datapad away and walked past the man in dark attire, paying no attention to him. As he exited the bar he heard Ten's voice and looked up. He felt his blood chill a little as he recognized the look on her face. It was a look he often saw on trauma victims when something had triggered a flashback. He still wasn't sure what had happened, but it was clear that Ten was not entirely aware of what was happening.

"Luke, don't move. What did she just say?" he asked, freezing in place.
14 Oct 2016, 8:08pm
Luke stopped in place but stood ready to defend himself, just in case.

"I'm not sure... Just.... She's not going back." He said to Cartlidge quietly, "I thought I did or said something in there." He added uncertainly. Looking between them both he got the impression something more was going on but decided not to question it.

Cerse finishes off his last beer, he pays the tab and walks out the door. "Time to hit the rack." He mumbles to himself. As the door opens he stops dead in his tracks seeing the trio's stand off. "Whoa!" Seeing Ten's face over Luke's shoulder, Cerse realizes things just got heavy.
15 Oct 2016, 4:23am
"Careful Cerse, I'm no Doctor but I figure this is either PTSD or a Nervous Breakdown. Either way, she's going to be a bit unpredictable." Luke said quietly but firmly. He took position in between Ten and the two guys, effectively creating a barrier between them and the apparently panicking woman in front of him.

He rubbed his eyes with forefinger and thumb as he thought about what he was going to say, took a deep breath, turned his head to look at Jacob and Cerse and said in an commanding voice. "This, I think, is my fault. If something happens, and you have to choose between us, save her. Got it??" He hesitated for a moment, before adding... "Totally cliché I know but while I just want to live, she deserves to live." Mentally cringing at how much of a twat he probably sounded just now but staying straight faced and turned back towards Ten...

He took a small step back towards Ten, keeping a much more calm exterior than he felt inside, guilt, worry, and concern were just a few of the emotions running through him just now. He reached a hand out towards hers, not taking it, just offering it and said, in a soft, soothing manner, "No one's going to make you go anywhere, but in order to avoid going there, we do need to know where we can't go." While trying to make eye contact, hoping to focus her attention on anything other than whatever was going on in her head. "So how about it? Just a place name, that's all we need now. Maybe later, we can get more on why, but only if you're ready."

He wasn't a religious man, but right now he was praying to every God, Demi-God and Deity that he knew of, that whatever happened now, it didn't involve being acquainted with his own blood.
15 Oct 2016, 6:07am
"No worries. I'm not here to cause her any trouble. I was just heading out to catch some sleep." Takes a couple steps back. "Don't mind me, I'll just be here if you guys need me." Looking at Cartlidge. "Has she done this before?"
15 Oct 2016, 6:31am
"Come on Shrodinger" He called as he stood up and the little, scruffy Tom cat jumped up into his arms and disappeared into the folds of the ancient leather jacket. Just the tip of a tail protruding as it made it's way around his torso.
He slugged back the last of his whisky and headed for the door, mumbling something about the Heisenberg Bridge and a veiled threat against the outfitters if they hadn't removed the modules he'd told them to get rid of before his departure time.

About a third of the whisky remained in the bottle on the table. Left for whatever lucky soul wanted to help themselves.
He took one last look around the place, knowing these were the last faces he'd see for a while and silently wishing he had gone somewhere with strippers instead....Then he was gone.
15 Oct 2016, 1:35pm
"Calm down Luke, no one's going to die" Cartlidge said before turning his gaze to cerse, "no this is the first time she's done it, but I've been expecting it to happen sooner or later."

Ten's gaze darted from person to person as Cartlidge spoke again, this time in a much softer voice, as if speaking to a child. "It's like Luke said. Nobody is going to take you anywhere, ok?"

Quivering, Ten took a step back, bringing her trembling hands to her face. Her eyes fixated on her metal one, which shook significantly less than her real one. Slowly, the fingers of her left hand wrapped around the cold exterior of prosthetic's wrist.

"I... w-want my a-arm ba...ack" she whispered.

(This is all being done with permission)
Marybelle was having a fine time. A fine time indeed. She was the spitting image of Aisling. The blue hair, hideous earrings and she had been practicing the same idiotic grin. She had it down pat. And the cosplay was working out to her advantage. She loved attention, and she knew just where to find it. From the Aisling fanboys, and they were never in short supply.

She was laughing it up, tipping back drinks and sitting on laps. She flipped the vibrant blue hair teasing Eddie, a rather rotund man wearing a long trench coat and a fedora. She giggled as he made his rather lame advances and vows of defending her honor when that nagging sensation hit her. She had to pee.

"Sorry fellas" she cooed, "I need some lady time...." She hopped off Eddie's lap and turned out the bar, her rather tacky heels clinking the way. She exited, not paying attention for at that moment she received a communication and she was rather engrossed in reading it, until she collided into something hard. Stumbling, and the device flying from her hands, she latched onto whatever it was she had to run into. Ten. Her arms snaked around the cyborg most aggressively as her weight went to pull the both down.
15 Oct 2016, 2:23pm
Cartlidge watched in horror as some random woman walked passed the three of them, her face buried in her personal device, and ran directly into Ten, bringing the two of them down. It would have been comical, if he didn't know how capable of killing Ten actually was.

Ten, her gaze still focused on her own two hands, was equally oblivious to the newcomer. One would have believed her heart had stopped from sheer terror when the woman brought the poor cyborg to the floor. In her mind, the newcomer must have been one of the three men trying to restrain her.

The second the two hit the floor, Ten's right hand split in two, just between the index and middle fingers. A long thin blade sprung free from this opening, ready to draw blood.
15 Oct 2016, 4:01pm
"Shit!!!" Luke immediately ran over and made an attempt to grab Tens arm and saw the blade slide out from between her fingers. Instinctively, he aimed for the wrist and attempted to shove the Blue Haired newcomer free.

Eddie sat there and he was in bliss. He had never received so much attention from a women. Well, other then his mom, whom he still lived with. In her guest quarters on an Asp Explorer. He mused about his luck. An Aisling was giving him the attention he so desperately wanted. He couldn't wait to tell his friends. The ones on that not so secret social communication line. The same people that, if shown even the slightest excitability over the blue haired bimbo, they would welcome you into their arms of Aisling basking.

He had fantasized over the girl for years. About being her savior. Fighting off hoards of evil Federation operatives. In one  such rendition he received a scratch on his arm; the tiniest of wounds, and because of such bravery she made him her special aide, and they shared a super secret love affair. Then he was welcomed into that group and they opened his eyes. His mind was being filled with fantasies beyond his wildest dreams. Aisling on Aisling. Group Asiling. And even tentacle Aisling. They showed him how he could broaden his horizons and form her into any desirable fetish of his choosing. And yet, they all took the oath, that they would always, no matter what, uphold her honor. The whole principle seemed off. He had the nagging sensation that every time they said the credo, they were lying, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. No matter. He shoved it from his mind.

Where was his Aisling? He had no idea what she meant by lady time and his imagination exploded. In his mind's eye he watched her push open the door to the ladies room and he was blinded by a brilliant and warm light. His vision cleared. Birds where chirping. The bathroom was a garden of utopia. Hundreds of Aislings were running around. Prancing like gazelle in the savannas of Africa. He was basking. Basking in her glory. He would never admit to such lewd thoughts. He was different, and he carefully locked it behind a facade of moral superiority. His fantasy dissolved when the bar wench asked if he needed a refill of his Code Red Mountain Dew. He nodded, then asked for more nacho cheese Doritos and another pack of Red Vines; but before she returned with the food of champions, he got up. His Aisling seemed to be taking far too long. He made his way out of the establishment, and upon his exit, he saw a sight that to him, was his calling.

A cyborg had a knife to his Aislings throat. He had to act! He reached into his trench coat, and fumbled the hilt of his katana. One of superior quality, that he got for the bargain price of a few quid. He pulled it out, but his trench coat got the better of him. His hand got twisted up in the dark flowing fabric and the sword hit the ground with a ringing clatter.

He tried to talk, but only stammers issued from his mouth. Incomprehensible mumbling.

No longer able to recognize the figures around her, Ten prepared herself to do the only thing she could think to do, but before she could fight back, one of the other figures pounced, holding her arm in place. Letting out a cry of terror, Ten tried to lift her arm against the weight of the man, revealing her rather unnatural strength as her arm slowly rose centimeters off of the ground.
As if with a mind of its own her other hand tensed up and, like a cornered viper, shot forward to take hold of the woman's neck, its fingers rapidly working to squeeze the life out of her.

"Aw dammit!" Cartlidge cursed as the scene unfolded. He reached for his shock pistol and started to fiddle with it, trying to set it to a painless but effective level.
