General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Kyla grimaced once more. "Jem, I thought you said this was a nice bar. But whatever, if they have decent Gin, I'll take it. Lead the way."

The pair made their way to the empty alcove, being careful to avoid treading on broken glass and puddles of spilled alcohol. The smell of a mix of various alcohols and whatever else that filled the air was an unpleasant combination, but Kyla was really looking forward to a drink to ease her nerves from previous tension at the entertainment district.

As the women sat down, Kyla pulled up a menu.

"Well, at least they have a good selection," She said.

"There must be a reason why the Draconis Dumbfire is so cheap. I know what I won't be getting," she cackled slightly as she skimmed down the list of available drinks. "I had a friend who used to drink it when she was a newjack. She said it tasted like burning toilet water, but it's all she could afford at the time."

Muninn froze in his seat as he saw the pair come in and take a booth. Looking down at his drink he paused. "So? Tove what's your answer?"

Tove looked at the young man in front of her and nodded. "However, you're not my boss, I don't answer to you."
20 Nov 2016, 1:06pm
This didn't turn out quite the way I expected.

"I see they sell Toolfa Gin here. An old friend introduced me to it shortly after I became a spacer. If you've never had it before, then you're in for a treat. It's mildly hallucinogenic, and affects the senses of hearing, touch and smell. Everyone reacts to it differently, but I think you'll like it."

I can't quite believe I'm about to say this...

"Look, Kyla... perhaps I was a bit hasty in saying some of the things I did about you. And perhaps you and I are more alike than either of us realise, deep down. So, how would you feel about us making a fresh start?"

Or am I still being far too naive? Too late now...
20 Nov 2016, 10:04pm
Kyla smiled, perhaps a little cheekily. "Well we started off alright, so yeah, I am willing to forgo our differences. I don't think you're a bad person, Jem, and I like that you stick to your guns no matter what. Such a trait is rare."

Besides, she's seen that side of me now, there's no hiding it from her anymore.

She looked at the menu again. "So, Toofla gin huh? Haven't heard of that one. Sounds like an adventure! Do you have any funny stories about it?"

"Funny stories? Well, after I became a spacer I spent quite a lot of time in and around Eravate. There was a bar on Cleve Hub called The Black Hole. It's not there now, but back then I went in whenever I visited the starport."

Why am I telling her this? It's not remotely funny...

"Anyway, I was talking by k-cast with Marky, the friend who'd told me about Toolfa gin in the first place. 'Guess what I'm drinking?' I said. 'Toolfa gin and tonic?'  he said. 'You clever boy!'  I said, 'and they're doubles, too!'  I was halfway through my fourth by this time, and the room was spinning. Marky said something about watching out for Kokarian swamp squids, whatever they are, and then I passed out. I woke up in my room the next day with no recollection of how I'd got there. I had a thumping headache, and because I'm allergic to sobriety pills I just had to deal with it. I was never a big drinker, you see."

Oh, dear me!

"Here are our drinks. Now, you'll have to tell me how it affects you. It takes a few minutes to start. For me, first I hear a man's voice whispering my name. Then after a few minutes I feel a hand on my thigh. And finally, a bit later, I can smell rotting fish. Bottoms up!"
21 Nov 2016, 11:41am
"I went to Eravate once," Kyla said. "Somehow a job ended up taking me to Russell Ring, although I didn't stay long. Some guy had shot a bounty hunter on a docking pad and then high-tailed it out of there. There was a fair bit of commotion, so I didn't hang around."

Kyla raised her glass. "Now it's time to see what the Toofla is all about."

She clinked her glass against Jemine's, before knocking the glass back as fast as she could. She grimaced slightly as the burning took hold, but smiled once it wore off.

"Whew... Now that is some good gin. You have taste, Jem." She said.

Kyla noticed Jemine observing her with an expectant gaze, waiting to see how she responded to the Gin.

A few minutes passed, and Kyla quickly jerked her head to the right. "I feel... like there's someone putting their hand on my shoulder... But... There is no one... This is so weird! I want to touch their hand, but there's no hand!"

Kyla started giggling a little. "It feels kinda... comforting actually."

Moments later, she started darting her eyes around the bar. "Okay, now I hear... Music? No... It's some kind of chiming. What is that?"

She noticed Jemine chuckling across the table. "You're really enjoying this, aren't you?"

Then finally, the smell hit her. "Oooh, I like that smell. That is nice. Like sweet berries from my home on Valhalla in Aymifa. You should visit there sometime."

Kyla's expression was that of pure joy by the time the effects of the Toofla Gin had taken hold.

"Wow... That was something," she said, with a warm smile on her face. "Thank you, Jem. I'm sorry about being such a bitch, you're not all bad at all."

She signalled the bartender for another round.

"I'm sure the people of this station are disappointed that we didn't end up having a cat fight though," she said, eying up the patrons around them with a smug grin.

21 Nov 2016, 12:30pm
Tove shot Muninn a look quizzically, then proceeded to finish her drink. "Well in that case, I'll happily be a privateer. However, you're not my boss. We're equals in this."

Muninn raised his glass and smiled. "I couldn't agree more, think of me more like a handler. You do what you like, I just play ball with you from time to time." He looked about him and clocked the woman looking round the patrons. Keeping his head low and his face turned, he glances back at Tove. "Our first task is in both our interests. One, we need to bury your husband in a place fitting of such a man. Two, we need to execute his murderer. The Legion has expressly demanded that she be kept alive and be taken to a penal colony.

"However, I don't think she is worth the life support. The first part isn't a problem. But can you take her off my hands and deal with the second part?"

Tove looked at her empty glass, a look of disdain and pain flashing across her face, her jaw tightened and a single tear rolled down her face. "Have her transferred to my ship, it will be done."
21 Nov 2016, 1:37pm
I really ought to be getting on my way...

"I'm glad you like the gin. I'm also very glad we didn't descend into a cat fight. I'm sure it would have been a very entertaining spectacle, but I have a feeling it wouldn't have ended well for me!"

And there's the rotting fish smell. Ughh! I could do without that. Why couldn't it have been something nice and flowery, like Kyla's sweet berries? Oh well, two out of three isn't bad, I suppose...

"So, what's next for the Valhallan Vixen? Another smuggling trip?"
21 Nov 2016, 5:06pm
Tove's ears pricked at the name of the hall of warriors, turning she looked at the two women speaking at another table. Neither looked like they followed Forn Seidr, instantly disinterested she turned back to the boy sat in front of her. She watched tentatively while he drank his whiskey and thought deeply about how she was going to deal with the murderer.

As she thought and Muninn drank, one of the crew stepped away from the doorway and made his way over. This man was fairly built and tattoos adorning arms and face. Though he was bald, it looked as though his pale blonde hair migrated down his face to shape a beard. Bending over, he whispered something into her ear. Her eyes widened and she looked over to the door.

"Þakka fyrir Einar. Hvar er hjálmar minn?" The older man gestured to one of the crew on the next table, a woman with long plated hair and a single tattoo under her eye. Tove waved the man away.

Muninn took interest in what was happening and leaned forward. "What was that?" He asked quizzically.

Tove leaned back and poured herself another drink. "Just my crew warning me an old face is about to appear."
21 Nov 2016, 7:24pm
Kyla leaned back, feeling a little pensive. "Nah... I don't know, I kind of want to get away for a bit. You could say the last couple of weeks have been... Well," she looked down at her empty glass, "dramatic." She sighed. "Yeah... I just need some time to myself. Not sure where I will go yet, but probably far away. I should probably go see my family in Aymifa first though. It's almost my brother's birthday."

Her attention went back to Jemine, whose face was scrunched up in semi-disgust. She chuckled, "I take it you're up to the rotting fish phase. So, big plans for you? A big adventure into some new and exciting territory planned for you?"
21 Nov 2016, 10:25pm
Marra enters, flanked by her assistant and bodyguard.

She heads directly for a private booth, her chin raised with an air of arrogance, a confident swagger in her hips.

The armoured brute lumbers behind, his mirrored visor turning in the direction of the other patrons, silently making his threat assessments. His gaze lingers on the table occupied by the tattooed crew.

The waifish blonde heads for the bar to order a bottle of Pegasi Moon and a couple of glasses. As she waits for the order, her attention is drawn to the two brunette women, who appear to be enjoying a drink and conversation between themselves.
21 Nov 2016, 11:11pm
Muninn eyes up Marra coming in, swaggering her hips like she owned the joint. "Oh, I see what you mean by old faces."

Tove eyeballed the lad, cocking her head. "You know about her?"

Muninn nodded and pointed his chin at the hunking lump of metal and muscle. "And big guy there. Boss took me to see her, back when we were hunting Daz."

Tove grabbed Muninn by the hand to draw his attention to her. "She's the one who killed our Jarl." She hissed, trying to keep under the radar.

Muninn nodded and kept drinking. "And? We're not exactly in a place we can do anything about it, and pirate business is pirate business. You want to hash it out? Nothing stopping you. But keep my name out of it."

Tove through her hands up and clucked. "Fucking Imperial Skitgarl. Worthless, the lot of you."
22 Nov 2016, 9:42am
"Deadeye" stepped into the bar, sizing up the occupants before seeing a secluded corner booth to await his contact. He waved over the server and ordered a single barrel bottle of Old Sol. He removed his helmet and observed the goings on around him as he swigged his Scotch.
22 Nov 2016, 4:54pm
"As a matter of fact, I'm on my way to Sol. Just a routine data delivery, so not very exciting at all, really! After that I'll be heading back to Bactrimpox, to see what else needs taking where. Hopefully I won't have to - - "

Good Gaia! He's big. Looks like he could snap someone in two with just his eyelids...

"Don't look now, but the most enormous man I've ever seen had just walked in. Honestly, he's huge! Definitely not the type to argue with. He's simply standing there, gazing around the room."

I wonder who he's looking for...?

"It's nice that you're going to see your mother and brother before you set off on your travels. I really should get in touch with my grandparents. It's been a while since I last spoke to them, what with one thing and another."

It seems such a pity to leave now, just when we've started to get on so well. Perhaps just one more drink...

"Kyla, there's a woman at the bar, wearing a gorgeous white leather dress. I'm fairly sure she came in with that big burly man. Wait... now she's looking at us."
22 Nov 2016, 5:11pm
Muninn sat there and stared at Tove for a long moment, before he reached forward and poured himself more whiskey. "What you don't realise, Tove. Is that after recent events, I became an officer. Now that entails I act in a certain way and treat things in a certain way. More so, the ones I associate with act in a certain way. Do you understand me?"

Tove stared blankly with blind rage at the young pilot in front of her. She began to slowly nod her head to indicate she understood.

"Good! Now, Morgan over there is only recruiting and isn't associated with the pirate gang that destroyed your clan. This means you cannot touch her. Under any circumstances, as we aren't in Pegasi, where matters of such are dealt with in such a way. Instead you are in space where under hand deals and back stabbing rule. You should know that, it's how the bitch in Skojldr operated."

Taking a swig, Tove leant forward and hissed. "Far þú í arsgat!. I'll take your privateer job, out of respect for his wishes. But you're scum."

Standing up Tove made her way to the other table housing her bald bodyguard and her shield maiden. Sitting there she started speaking in tongues to the two of them, glancing around.

Muninn sat there silently staring at his glass, a thoughtful expression passing his face.
