General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Phisto stepped through Ingaba's doors for the first time. Narrowing his eyes, he surveyed the people, the layout, the general feel of the place.  He breathed in the atmosphere, took in the smoky neon dancing across countless points of light. He felt good, evil, a gamut of moralities and ways of being smashed together with food, alcohol, conversation, and maybe even a touch of malice and magnanimity.

"This place likes me already," he sweetly whispered under his breath.  Moving to the bar, he waved his hand at its keeper, "Achenar Blue, neat, and whatever passes for a decent breakfast. Thank you kindly."  The barkeep nodded, and Phisto turned to find a spot at the bar to sit.

Here.  We.  Go.

Cartlidge sat back down across from Ten and began to rub his head to help his headache.

"Make any progress?" he asked.

"I'm just about to get access to the station's security server. Hopefully the chief of security is on break right now," the cyborg replied.

"And if he isn't ?"

"Then he is going to be rather upset that his account has mysteriously locked him out."

Cartlidge sighed and took a sip of his drink as he watched a newcomer enter the bar. He had never seen the man at the bar before, but then again the bar was always filled with new people. Something in particular about the man struck him as odd, however. Perhaps it was the way he carried himself. He wasn't sure why, but he knew the feeling in his gut told him that the man was dangerous.

"Hey Ten, can you give me anything on the new guy?" he whispered. The cyborg looked up, blinked, looked at the new patron, and finally returned to her datapad.

"Sure. Just one moment. I need to handle this first."

Swirling the last of his drink around the bottom of the glass, Phisto tipped his head back hard and washed it down his throat.  Cracking his neck from one side to the other, he waved off a second round, "Sorry, barkeep, one and done for me.  Water would be lovely, if you have it."  The barkeep's face dropped.

Spinning around on his seat, he gazed out once more.  This place was certainly different from anything before his space-borne days, and considering he spent most of the time on his ships now, obviously very different from that.  The noise, for one, was particularly incredible.  Not in the bothersome way, but in a new, slightly puzzling kind of way. Conversations ebbed and flowed over each and through the music. Tone and meaning and vocabularies blasting together with beats and melodies.  The din was a pleasant change from the typical lack of din on his ship.  Change, yes, that was it.  This was a nice change.

The sharp sound of glass rudely hitting bar turned his head back round. His water had arrived, along with a prompt bill.  Tipping handsomely enough to raise the barkeep's eyebrow, Phisto took the water and coyly sipped it.

"Thanks, buddy." He turned back round, and began to inspect the best he could, given the lights and other variances, the different parties seated in the private cubby holes and tables.

Reiffis entered InGaBa and looked around taking in the scenery. Numerous people littered the area and he covered his eyes as one of the lights in the area panned across his view.

He approached the bar, noticing Phisto just down from him. He gave him a nod and called over the Bartender. "Lavian Brandy please?" He passed him over the credits and rested against the bar-top to watch people coming and going. He felt a buzz from his data-pad and pulled it out to check.

Take the private booth at the end. I will be waiting!"

He looked around a little confused but followed the instructions, making sure to grab his drink.

He approached the booth at the end only to meet up with a woman, mid-thirties at most, dressed in a long white dress. "Commander Reiffis, I presume?" She asked him, her eyes not leaving his own as he sat down opposite her.

"You presume correct Miss. I don't believe I managed to catch your name however? I find it bad practice not to know the name of whom you do business with." He replied.

"You will not need it. This job is to be off the records. My client wishes this transaction to be kept under the radar. Surely you understand the ramifications if my client's dealings were to be discovered by the Empire or the Federation."

"So this is a smuggling operation then? When I was contacted I was lead to believe this was to be a simple delivery? I am already putting my life on the line flying into Federation space."

"You will be fairly compensated for your time Commander." she passed him over a pad with an amount on the screen "I believe this should suffice?"

He looked over the pad and scratched his chin as he looked it over "What is the cargo that would ask for such a high price and for it to be dropped off in Federation space to a client who's location I have yet to be given?"

She smiled at him. "I am your cargo." She leaned forward giving him a clear view of her assets "Fly me there safely and I will make the journey worth your while with more than just credits?"

He leaned back in the booth, his eyes taking in the view, scratching his chin he thought it over as he took a sip of his brandy. "So I am to 'cargo' you to a Federation contact without been scanned by authorities or the Empire? In exchange you will pay me in credits and kind?" he inquired further.

"Exactly. I like my privacy and always pay well for transport."

He took another sip of his brandy and though it over. "Fine. Let me finish off my drink and we will then set off towards my ship."

Ten finished working for the moment. As another new patron passed by she glanced at the earlier newcomer as he drank at the bar. She then looked back at her glass as she searched for the information they wanted.

"Well?" Cartlidge asked.

"Fount it. Commander SonofMacPhisto. Usually goes by Phisto. He owns multiple ships, with his flag being a Fer-de-Lance. Currently he's-"

"He's wanted in multiple systems, isn't he?" Cartlidge interrupted.

"Uh... yes. How did you know?"

"I've run into him more than once, always in systems where he had a high bounty. Just never knew what he looked like," the bounty hunter looked over at the man before turning back to Ten. "We can't afford any more unwanted attention, so don't let me do anything stupid, ok?"

Ten nodded and returned to her work while Cartlidge focused on his own datapad, bring the small marble that had been forgotten about back to life.
01 Dec 2016, 4:36am
Slowly stirring his melting ice with a thoroughly chewed straw, Phisto's eyes looked over Ingaba.  To even the mildly observant, one could tell his mind was elsewhere.

I wonder how versed Reiffis is in the classic noir mythologies. A woman like that and a man like him usually end up with knives in places and people they shouldn't be. Messy business, mixing up a cocktail like that.

Phisto quite publicly grinned to himself.

And what of the sweet couple at that other table. Clearly engrossed in their work. He's glanced at me a couple times. Could be interesting, but they appear to have... how does one say it... larger aquatic beasts to catch and prepare for evening meals?

Now how about that enormous beast of a sentient creature. Fancy augmentations too. Could probably bench press No Data Available if he was angry enough. Likely a useful trait. Should look into that sort of thing for myself sometime, perhaps. Positive outlets for stress are not currently my forte.

Oh, and how could I forget the best part. Dear Diary, I think there's royalty on the station! Couldn't really say for sure, but based on clearly interesting whispers around here, there's someone of import for sure. Should probably only seek her out if my death wish is stronger than usual.

Snapping himself back into the moment, he whispered softly into his drink, "Careful, Phisto. You know how you wear yourself on your sleeve. These kind people will know you're talking about them. Don't be rude with the new folk."  Smiling politely, he turned around to order another water.

Snipes was growing weary of waiting. He had dispatched several teams from the barracks aboard the Darkfire to sweep the station, but had come up with nothing yet. Any longer and he would have to take those dispatches back to the Coma control sector. The Senator would be unhappy to hear of the confusing account of what had happened here, but only if the other men were to make it off station. I hate politicians. He mixed it up and waved over the barkeep, "Achenar Blue, leave the bottle." If nothing else, he realized he never relaxes or drinks this much. Does this count as a vacation?

He tuned into the events of Galnet and loved the praise coming from his home system as his organization achieved a boom status in its economy and flooded the local newsfeeds about their hard work paying off. At least the "import/export" of various items will always generate business.
01 Dec 2016, 6:49am
Reiffis looked up from his now empty glass at the woman that would be his passenger, taking note of more of her features. Her hair was long and fell elegantly onto her shoulder, slightly reminiscent of the old movies. He had heard a little about in his travels, back when movies were in black and white. Her make up was minimal from what he could tell, her lips were a ruby red and she had highlighted her eyes slightly. This woman knew how to look appealing that was for sure. He bit his tongue in thought and raised his glass. "One drink for the flight for the both of us. I'f we are going to be sharing a ship for a while, we might as well enjoy a drink first." He stated as he got up "Please stay seated I will bring the lady over a glass of wine. We can converse a little more then. If I'm going to be flying you into Fed space, I would at least like to know a little more about you."

She was about to protest as she raised her hand slightly but instead decided to drop it "A wine would be nice actually. Thank you Commander." She replied with a smile.

"Please call me Reiffis. I don't care much for formalities.." He got up from the table and went over to the bar, patting Phisto on the back as he stood beside him. "Any Luck finding a nice woman?" he joked. He signaled over the Bartender "Another Brandy for myself, no ice and a glass of Kamadhenu Red please."
01 Dec 2016, 5:05pm
That's the second time he's touched me. Friendliest elevator friend, ever?

"I'm afraid not, my dear Reiffis. Fortune favors the bold, not the charmingly aimless." Phisto turned and motioned to the barkeep,

"Excuse me, sir?  Do you see the fine couple sitting across the way," Phisto pointed with is left hand to the seated pair working away on their respective projects, "the clearly augmented lady and her alternatively-eyed companion?"

"Yes, sir, I do.  They are regulars here... go by the name of Car..." the barkeep responded, but stopped speaking as Phisto's palm had parked itself directly in front of his nose.  Startled,  he cut himself off and stepped back.

"Sorry," said Phisto, "if they wish for me to know their names they can handle that all on their own. Kindly send them two ice waters, with straws and my compliments."

The bartender lowered his gaze at Phisto, clearly annoyed.

"Oh, go on!  I'll make it worth your while." Phisto continued, "Do you forget my earlier generosity so easily?"

Cartlidge had piloted the little marble back to their booth and was about to pick it up when he noticed Phisto pointing in his direction.

"I think he's calling security on us," he whispered.

"The server says there's no calls coming in from this area, so you are most likely just being paranoid," Ten countered, keeping her eyes on her project. "If anything I suggest you watch the other, more heavily armed individual sitting at the bar, as he seems to be a bounty hunter as well. I am almost done with this so please do not distract me for a few minutes."

Cartlidge couldn't help but glance at both the bounty hunter and Phisto while he picked up his marble and placed it back in his pocket.
01 Dec 2016, 5:59pm
The bartender approached Cartlidge and Ten, in each hand was a tall glass of clear liquid, ice, and a straw. Placing each glass on the table,

"Compliments of the... gentleman at the bar." With annoyance rising in his voice at every syllable, "Yes, it's just ice water." The bartender turned, and walked away from the pair.
01 Dec 2016, 6:47pm
Cartlidge looked at the glass with a mixture of confusion and suspicion while Ten wordlessly finished her first drink and started on the new one. Roughly a minute later, she finally looked up to speak.

"Ok, I can't get the system to drop our bounties, but I can clear the impound order on the ship. All you have to do is get past security and silent run your way out of the station."

"And what'll you be doing?" Cartlidge asked.

"I'll stay here and 'gum up the works' a bit for you," the cyborg smiled. "Then once you're out I'll take the Type 9 and follow."

Cartlidge thought for a moment and glanced once more at the men at the bar. "Just make sure no one follows you out ok?"
01 Dec 2016, 9:35pm
"I wouldn't call myself bold, buddy." he joked. "Turns out my contact is also my cargo. She wants me to fly her to Sol." He shook his head and chuckled "I don't even have a permit to fly there yet. Also I fly a Cargo ship not a Luxury Liner."

He patted Phisto's shoulder once more and took the drinks back to his private booth glancing over to where Phisto sent the drinks and taking in how the couple looked before settling down and passed the glass of red to his female companion "For the void."

She looked at him and shook her head with a smile "Do you liqueur up all people that ask you to do a job?"

"No, usually they pay for their drinks. You're lucky." he replied taking a drink of his brandy.
01 Dec 2016, 10:05pm
Oh, by Sajuuk this is great. This is perfect!

Phisto politely excused himself from Reiffis' company and grinned as he strode towards the table where the augmented woman and alternatively-eyed man sat. Arriving mid sip, he gulped down his water and excitedly started talking,

"I know this is, at minimum, weird.  But I wanted to thank you.  Most people, when I send them what I sent you, either dismiss it out of hand or give me an embarrassingly unkind look. But you," turning to the woman, "accepted it without question.  While you," turning to the man, "appeared as if it might strangle you there in your seat.  Two different people, together, having gloriously opposite reactions to something as common, yet critical, as water."

Phisto's face shifted, as if a brief shade of embarrassment began to cloud his excitement.

"I can plainly see you're both busy with undoubtedly important tasks, so I'll leave you to it, but from the bottom of my heart, thank you for just being different."
02 Dec 2016, 12:24am
Before Ten could reply to Cartlidge's question, he turned away to watch Phisto approach, his blank expression hiding a sense of hostility and suspicion that were much more visible in his stare. Before he could get close, Ten flipped her datapad over so that its contents were hidden. As the man started to speak, Cartlidge slowly drew his pistol from his jacket pocket, hiding it just out of sight under the table.

Ten, however, wore an expression of simple confusion, calmly listening to Phisto's explanation before speaking. "Um, you are welcome, but you see, there was no need to check the water. Given the circumstances I figured that there was only a 4.7 percent chance that the water had been tampered with. It would drop to 3.2 percent if I only considered the possibility of any lethal chemicals being present. With that in mind, I considered it far more likely that you were simply trying to make a friendly gesture, since my friend here has been noticeably watching you since you entered the bar."

Taking the hint, Cartlidge looked to Ten before closing his eyes and raised his hands above the table in surrender, leaving his pistol sitting on his knee.
