General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Not on hand, no," Isaiah said. "I could probably go back to my ship and grab one though. If there's going to be an exchange, that would be the place to do it anyway."

He pulled his hand away from Lilith's and returned both to his slate, thinking. "I'll send a message to Glaboski saying that I have you in my ship, along with the data. I'll request that he comes alone so as not to make a scene. I'll hand off the fake data stick, and you can do to him whatever it is you plan on doing. Sound good?"

"We may want to wait until her ship is repaired so we all can go our separate ways as quickly as possible once the exchange is done," Bloodfeather added. "Lingering after the fact is going to pose a risk to everyone involved."

"Yeah. And we should probably get moving sooner rather than later if we want to stay out of sight." He cast a wary eye around the bar yet again, particularly at the two that Lilith had pointed out. "We're not doing ourselves any favors by sitting in the open like this."

A chill ran up Cartlidge's spine as he immediately recognized Stryker's voice. He could feel a headache coming on. He was in the same room with two people he had managed to piss off, while wanted. He had somehow managed to pick the worst possible place to be.

Reluctantly Cartlidge stood up, took a large gulp of his beer, and walked over to Stryker's booth, his right hand firmly on his pistol while Ten watched in confusion. He wasn't sure if he was more angry or terrified.

Ignoring the others in the booth, Cartlidge strained to keep a straight face as he spoke to Stryker. "Is there something you need?" he asked.

"You mean I get to meet Bloodfeather in person? I'm honoured." Lilith smiled. She was still debating what to do, but hoped to figure it out before the time came.

"Ok, so I'll play along with the part of the drunk, slightly infatuated lady friend. You pop out to meet with him, I'll come out and be shocked. Once I get close, I can turn the tables." Lilith generalised, "I'll avoid getting blood on your ship, don't worry."

Looking around, she had to admit the place was getting crowded.

"Ok, lets go. We can talk on the way." She added, downing her half glass and gathering her guns and knives from the side of the table before putting them away and standing up. Eyeing the man and woman with daggers in her eyes.
28 Nov 2016, 3:57am
"The feeling is mutual!" Bloodfeather exclaimed. "Finally, someone to talk to who isn't dreadfully boring."

Isaiah rolled his eyes and rose from his seat, reaching for his sidearm and holstering it, pulling his shirt over it to conceal it. He took one last look around the bar, then gestured towards the exit. "Alright, let's get out of here before someone decides to follow us."

"I have eyes on both of you and I'll let you know if I see anyone following," Bloodfeather said. "Going back to your earpiece, Commander."

"We're going to Pad 33, just for your information," he said to Lilith, heading for the exit.
28 Nov 2016, 4:09am
On their way out, Lilith linked arms with the Isaiah, and made a point to wobble slightly on her feet. Leaning towards his ear she gave the impression she was going to peck him on the cheek, instead she whispered.

"Play the part from now." Hoping he'd follow suit and throw off any potential tail.

She still couldn't resist glowering at the man as he walked past and the woman as she remained seated in the booth, as though she could somehow tell them telepathically she hadn't forgotten their previous encounter. But as they passed she resumed her smile and stuck right next to Isaiah.

*You know, Bloodfeather is right, it really wasn't long ago you had a gun on him. Now you're basically fawning all over him??* She thought to herself, but what choice did she have? Her ship was as good as grounded, and she needed the Doctor to learn his new place. It was either this or be hunted by god knows who else. Besides, against all odds, she actually felt a sense of comfort to be walking like this with someone...

"Sup Slick?" Stryker would ask. "Get that boot off your FSD yet?" He took a sip of his drink. " Says here, your wanted. Got a nice bounty on your head too. I'll tell ya what. I'll forget that I saw ya here, in exchange for, say, 25,000 credits."

He smiled and his finger hovered over the pad, with an icon that glowed "Notify Authorities?"
28 Nov 2016, 4:19am
Cartlidge watched the woman leave with the guy she had been talking to and felt a hint of relief. He then looked down at Stryker's datapad and finally at the man himself.

"I'll triple that if you or your friends could tell me anything on how to get around the security lock on my FSD," he calmly replied. He had been saving up for a new ship recently, so money was luckily not an issue.
28 Nov 2016, 4:24am
Isaiah stuck to the role he'd been given, walking along with her arm-in-arm, trying to hide the conflict on his face. Cait would be fucking pissed right now. Wanted criminal on my arm, acting like this is totally fine. Never mind the fact she'd lose her shit knowing I was cozied up to another woman.

Even so, he couldn't deny the fact that he did feel something for Lilith. Not attraction, but rather a sense of... sympathy, perhaps. Understanding. He didn't know her story up to that point - her bounties might tell the tale better than anything else - but he felt a sense of shared experiences with her. Maybe they were more alike than they realized. And maybe she'd made her share of mistakes that landed her here, on the run from bounty hunters and someone who didn't seem to be all that they appeared to be.

"So what's your story?" he asked her quietly as they entered the entertainment district once again. "How'd you end up racking up those bounties?"
28 Nov 2016, 4:41am
"My story??" Lilith replied, startled... No one asked her that sort of thing. It was usually how do you feel about killing, or smuggling, or how did she like her eggs in the morning. She grimaced at that last one, then chuckled at how that bloke ended up with a broken middle finger when he'd placed his hand just a touch too high up her leg.

Realising she hadn't actually answered she cleared her throat.

"Uhh... I've been looking for someone important and people aren't usually willing to share. So I've had to, kinda, persuade them to talk." Not overly sure why she was indulging him rather than making up something she continued anyway. "I don't know how far up I need to go to reach the person I'm needing to find, but as I climb the ladder, I piss off more people. Pissed off authorities means bounties."

An urge to justify herself came over her, she couldn't help it, maybe it was the alcohol, maybe it was the close proximity, there was no telling.

"You get bounties, certain people stop doing business with you, so yeah, I've had to take more questionable jobs to pay my way." She finished. It wasn't a topic she'd expected to be discussing, nor one she'd expected to open up about to anyone, but here she was.

"So... What about you? Who's the lucky lady?... Or man? I don't judge..." She added with a smile.
28 Nov 2016, 4:57am
"You'd like her," he said. "Actually, you two are a lot alike." His thoughts turned to Cait and he smiled to himself.

"I used to have a bounty on my head too, for reasons maybe not all that different from yours. I made a choice and it cost me. She was sent after me. Elite bounty hunter with years of experience. She caught me out in the open while I was trying to bring someone back home, shot me down. She had me dead to rights and my passenger at the time saved my life." He made a click with his tongue. "Shot her. Bullet hit her in the back of the head at an angle, cracked her skull."

He inhaled sharply, thinking about the days after the crash, recovering in the hospital alongside her - the talks, the friendship that formed. They parted ways after they both had been released and he'd tried to settle into something of a normal life, doing manual labor at the docks of the Leeson City spaceport in Prism.

"I wanted to give up this life but... once you do it for a while, you end up wanting to go back to it. Someone gave me a chance, gave me some financial backing. I found myself back behind the controls of a ship and working with a group called The Reach, which she was a part of. It was a little awkward at first, but... something clicked. She understood me. She'd never say we were actually 'together' in the sense that we go on dates or sit on a couch and binge-watch Federation's Most Wanted, but we both take care of each other. It goes beyond mere words, I suppose." He laughed. "I mean it better. She did almost kill me."
28 Nov 2016, 10:37am
"Sounds lovely." Lilith smiled, "Almost killed you eh? Sounds like you have a type." She added, nudging him playfully.

They had just about reached the elevator and Lilith was thinking about how she'd ended up in her situation. Her uncaring Father, perfect Sister, dead Mother... The bounties were an unfortunate side effect of, what she felt was, her duty to chase those responsible. The Federal Security members that had arrived too late to help had all been grounded, with the leader being court martialled and imprisoned. Turned out they had been playing card games aboard their Anaconda with the music too loud to hear the distress signal chiding away.

As a result, all but one Imperial had escaped, along with their intended target. Using her contact and flaunting her relation to her dad, she'd managed to wrangle a few minutes with the Imperial and get some details on who to look for and where to find them. Several months later and she'd encountered a CMDR Luke who'd, not willingly, helped by giving her a new target shrouded in secrecy. This meant she must be close.

Her breath caught as she remembered her encounter with him. The first man in forever who hadn't talked down to her. First one who hadn't seen her as a bed warmer....

*Shut up Lilith, for GODS sake... FOCUS!!!* She scolded herself.

"Whether this lowers your opinion of me or not, I haven't made mistakes in my choices of what I'm doing. There is no other option for me and I actually get some enjoyment out of it. After this is done, I'm going straight back to it. It's all I've known since I got my licence." She said lowering her voice, "There's always going to be a price on my head, from the Empire and the Federation, although daddy dearest", she basically spat the words, "tends to try and keep that under wraps. Doesn't want people knowing his own daughter has been shooting up Federal Security escorts now. Wouldn't be good for his promotion prospects..."

What the hell was it about this man that had her spilling everything?? She wanted to pull away and resume her normal indifferent self, but the threat of Glaboski having eyes and ears out there was too great. Well... Hopefully after this she'll never see him again she thought as she clicked the elevator button and the doors opened, letting out three people and permitting her and Isaiah to enter.
28 Nov 2016, 11:17am
Once inside the lift, Isaiah stood against the back wall, arms crossed.

"This life... it catches up with you, you know that? The further you go from who you used to be, the harder it is to get back to some sense of normalcy." His life had taken more turns than he could count; going from a husband with hopes for a family to a gun-for-hire. He'd made more than his fair share of mistakes - the biggest one continued to haunt him at night in his dreams - but he'd slowly been finding his way back to who he once was.

Her honesty with him had given him a glimpse into what made her tick, and part of him wanted to share where he'd been, what he'd done. As the doors closed in front of them, he continued.

"My brother's name was Micah," he said, referring to the name he'd given her when they first spoke. "I killed him. I killed him because he, my father, and my wife had taken sides in that insurrection in Eravate a few years ago. I held them responsible for what happened to my - our - home. I watched my father be sentenced for crimes against humanity for his part in destroying the city we lived in. And the woman I called my wife..." he chewed on his words for a moment. "I killed her too. I felt like I had to. I needed to see it through, to exact vengeance."

"I felt nothing for my brother or father, but when it came to her, I... she didn't deserve it. I saw the same woman I spent years of my life in love with, not the murderer that I tried so hard to convince myself she was. And that haunts me." He closed his eyes tightly, biting back the wave of emotion that washed over him. Thoughts of the battle in Volungu, the things he'd seen - the sheer madness of the violence and slaughter that unfolded in the emptiness of space. Her Courier, his Vulture, the fight that ensued - those final, bitter moments when his finger curled around the trigger and sent her into oblivion. It was an image that would forever remain burned into his psyche.

He opened his eyes again, slowly, and looked across the lift to her. "I can't tell you what you should do. But it catches up with you. It might not seem like it will right now. But eventually the day will come when you'll grow weary of running, of chasing something and being chased."
28 Nov 2016, 4:29pm
Standing at the other side of the elevator Lilith resorted to her usual defensive posture, leaning against the wall, arms folded, one foot up. She listened with interest at the story that was being unfolded, the man had seen some serious shit. Killing his own family, then his Wife?? Thinking about it for a moment, she knew she'd have no qualms about doing the same to her own Father, but had never considered how she'd deal with Abigail, her Sister. They'd always got on with each other, but then the stupid bint had to follow in Daddy's footsteps and join the very people who couldn't protect her own Mother...

She stood frowning. His attempts to coerce her into a more acceptable life, although sweet in it's own way, served only to irritate her slightly. As tempting as it was to wave her gun at him and tell him to shut up, part of her reminded her she needed him right now.

"Don't.... Just... Don't do that. I don't want saving, I don't need saving." Lilith said angrily, raising her voice, "Who I used to be? A little girl with a perfect sister, a Dad who ony gave a shit about his next paycheck and a Mum who actually cared. But which one did the damned universe decide I no longer needed??? No... That little girl died a long time ago when the Empire killed my Mum, and the Feds were too busy hoping for a Royal Flush to give a fuck!! I am not stopping until those responsible are just as dead!!! You know what her part was in all of this?? She was a crew member on board a tourist ship that just happened to be carrying a Fed Official."

She breathed heavily, fighting back tears.

"After that? I'll be lucky if my bounties aren't in the millions. But you know what? I don't care... All this time, I've become somewhat proficient at taking out entire convoys single handedly. Why let such a skill go to waste? Besides... Why the hell would I do anything that might help the damned Feds or Imps gain more power? No... This is my life. I don't regret it. I don't dislike it. So I say again," She took a deep breath, then spoke slowly and carefully, "I don't need saving and I don't want saving."

Stryker was still unhappy with the one-eyed bandit. Particularly with the whole grenade debacle that landed him in medical. Which lead to him meeting Commander Hail, who tried to cart him off to some Federation penal colony. She ended up being cool when they broke into that house and he busted that safe, and was actually starting lo like her, until she….well she didn’t really trick him….but in a way tricked him into going to Mars, where he was pressed into the service of the FIS. Which ultimately culminated in him wearing a ridiculous mole singlet and pinning an obscenly large tracking bug to Marra. To which she was quite pissed. And one does not piss off the Pirate Queen without consequence. Locke was trying to mediate that whole mess in the present moment.

So Stryker smiled at Carlidge and said, “Bro, as much as the credits are tempting, you’re a bloody disaster. You got what you deserved. Your ship’s in the impound and you have a bounty on your head, that’s at least twice what your offering me. Pay the 25,000 credits and be on your merry way. You have 5 seconds to fork it over, after which I’ll start taking bets to see how fast it takes station security to haul your butt into a brig.”
28 Nov 2016, 7:16pm
Cartlidge let out a long sigh as he pulled out his datapad and started the transfer. He figured that he really shouldn't have been angry. 25,000 was pocket change compared to what he typically earned, and if it meant one less problem he had to deal with, it was well worth the money. Once the transaction was sent he looked up to speak.

"There. That's 25k. I guess I'll be taking me leave then?" he asked before turning to walk away.
