General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Mhera sat there listening to Ten.
She wants to say more.....It's right there....but she needs trust. I wonder.... She opened her mouth, but before any words slipped from it, something caught her attention. She turned her head.

That man at the bar. He was wearing a visor....Did it just? No! She waited a moment. The visor changed from some eyes, to a pair of equal signs, then to some other emote. She couldn't help but wonder why any grown man with a shred of self respect would choose to wear a helmet that flashed gimmicky pixalted Kawaii emotes. It wasn't even that clever. More then half the children in her 3rd grade class had visors that did that. It had gotten so bad that the school had banned them because they were such a distraction.

She thought about it more, and a smile blossomed on her face. She was particularly keen of the kitty emote  >^.^<  and wondered if she would witness that too. The smile burst open into a silent fit of giggles. Then the subject changed to hairy chests, and scars...She couldn't help it. The giggle fit became less then quiet. She grabbed onto Ten's arm, pointing at the pair of silly men.

The bar was busy.  Laughter, conflict, people making the din they always do when food and drink mix with personalities and bias.  Phisto stood up to stretch his legs, leaning up against the bar, taking the next drink in his hand.

This makes... three?  No!  Six!  I'd better stop with the doubles.

He smiled and gazed into the scotch.  He felt warm, comfortable, and vulnerable. His thoughts turned to his ship,

What was it clan-mother used to say?  Don't be sad because he's gone, but be happy he was at all?

He frowned and took a drink. The words were easy.

Me Unit 349 *John* looks around noticing the girl looking at the guy wearing the visor came up to her saying
" Oi that guy with the visor well I'm not with him to let you know but he is weird. "
30 Dec 2016, 1:33am
Rowen's visor expression remained the same [-_-'] as he continued to look over some digital paper work with an odd anchor looking logo attached to it. "Great... Another freighter just canceled on me..." he'd mumble, this time sounding normal since he wasn't speaking through the helmet as much.

He'd take another sip of his drink and then sigh,"Swear to god feels like I'm the only reason my company get's shit done.." He'd say into the palm of his hand, making it muffled to the ladies but the man who was near him would be able to make out most of what he said.
30 Dec 2016, 2:24am
He heard what he said talking to him
" Hey maty you just got an freighter canceled on you....... I used to do a business as well but It didn't work as well soo that's why I'm a soldier do you want to know my name ???"

Rowen sighed,"No, I'm good I mean... Means I've got more freight to haul now.." He'd say sounding disappointed more than anything. His visor changing to [v-v'] for a brief moment before going to [o o], "Thanks for your concern but... Crap this is why I don't get off my ship often..." He'd mutter rubbing his visor as if it was his face, clearly socially awkward in this sort of conversation.
31 Dec 2016, 5:13am
Ten waited for Mhera's response as she opened her mouth to speak, only to realize her attention was elsewhere. As she began to giggle and point she turned her attention to the pair sitting at the bar. She listened to them for a moment and began to smile as Mhera continued her fit of laughter.
She wasn't entirely sure what specifically was so amusing, but the whole scene was enjoyable nonetheless. Perhaps it was the man's visor?

But why would someone have such icons appear on their visor in such an odd order, and why was it so amusing? Was his helmet malfunctioning perhaps? Maybe I should look into it... They're supposed to look like faces? Oh, that really is quite amusing!

Ten's smile grew wider at the revelation. As it turned out, she had never seen an "emote" before, or at least she had no memory of it.
31 Dec 2016, 5:53am
Responding to the man
" Oh I'm sorry I thought you had a freighter canceled on you I'm sorry......"
31 Dec 2016, 2:16pm
Rowen's visor blinked,"Well I did... I mean unless you're offering to haul freight in which I'd ask. Don't you already have other responsibilities solider?" he'd ask the man as he stowed his data pad away into a pocket of his jacket. Looking off to the side at his almost finished drink, he'd grab the glass and finish it off with a sigh. He'd then look over to the bartender," Get me another, thank you." he would say to them, pushing his glass forwards.

Turning to look back at the man he'd been having a minor conversation with, he'd look at them as his visor returned to [o o] as he looked at him.
31 Dec 2016, 3:36pm
As he was leaving the bar to return to his duty looking at the the man
" Its nice to meet you !!! "
31 Dec 2016, 6:25pm
Rowen just watched the man leave before looking over at the ladies who has been watching and giggling at him earlier. His visor turned into a question mark before he shrugged, the visor changing to [o O] as he emoted. The bartender coughed lightly to get his attention, which worked rather well as he quickly spun back around and paid once more for the drink before downing the glass in a few gulps.

He inhaled and his visor changed to [- -] before changing to [x x] as he exhaled with a sigh, twirling his beard around his index finger he would tuck the bundle of hair under his chin as the bottom of the helmet closed up once more making his helmet add a 'mouth' by changing to [x_x]. "Well... That outta' keep me long enough to finish up my work here..." He'd say, his voice once more being distorted through the speaker of his helmet. He'd turn to the ladies and gave them a wave before quickly turning on his heels and heading out of the bar himself.

The holo-ball dropped, the crowded, noisy bar filling with cheers as the raucous patrons greeted the arrival of 3303. Matt and Kyndi turned to each other and grinned, kissing each other full on the lips.

Matt looked down at his partner, tiny bits of reflective confetti in her hair.

"Happy new year, darlin'! Let's hope it was better than ol' 02, huh?"

Grinning coyly, she pulled him towards the bar exit, looking over her shoulder with a gleam in her eye.

"I don't know if that'll happen," she said. "But I do know how to make sure it gets off to a damn good start!"

Datura looks across the bar as Kyndi and Matt are kissing.

"Yo, get a room, love birds!" he yells, raising his glass with a smirk.
01 Jan 2017, 11:21am
Isaiah and Cait sat in one of the cubbyholes towards the back of the bar, away from much of the crowd and festivities. He had an arm about her and she was nestled in close, head on his shoulder.

"Happy new year, sweetheart," he said to Cait, who snorted and laughed softly.

"Did I mention how much I hate when you call me that?" she replied, turning her head to look up into his eyes. The tiny smile on her lips told him she was only teasing. In truth, it was one thing she enjoyed immensely.

"Why do you think I keep calling you sweetheart?"

Cait gently elbowed him in the ribs. "Keep it up, wise guy." She brought her face closer to his, running a hand along his stubbly cheek. "You're already in deep for this whole wild goose chase you pulled me into."

"There's worse people to be in deep with, I think," Isaiah said, pulling his arm tighter around her and leaning it to kiss her softly. It wasn't exactly how he'd hoped to spend the last night of the year, but having her there with him made the circumstances irrelevant. They broke the kiss and she ran a hand through his hair, gently running her fingers over the wound Glaboski had inflicted.

"Does it hurt?" Cait asked softly, trying to gauge his reaction.

"No. To be honest I don't even feel anything there." He shrugged, turning his attention back to the crowd. "It's like that one spot is completely dead."

She made a low sound of understanding, withdrawing her hand from his hair and placing it on his chest. They were silent for a few minutes, watching as the patrons of the bar reveled and sang and celebrated, both of them reflecting on the year.

Cait straightened in the seat, shifting so that she was sitting upright. "I think... I want to step away from flying. From bounty hunting," she said, brushing a lock of her hair behind her ear. "I'm almost forty years old. I told myself I'd get out of the business once I'd made enough money to set up somewhere nice, and I have. Finally."

Isaiah watched her as she drew imaginary circles on the table with her finger. She was measuring her words.

"I've been hunting for so long now and I think I just want a change of pace, you know? I want to slow down."

"What do you want to do?"

"I don't know," she said with a shrug. "Back when he was alive, my father used to be quite the carpenter. I used to spend hours helping him cut and sand down things that he'd build for people to buy at the market. Jewelry cases, cabinets, tables..." her voice trailed off as she recalled her memories to him. "There was a certain kind of wood he used on special projects. It smelled wonderful. I can't remember what it was though."

"You want to be a carpenter?"

"Well when you say it that way," Cait said, turning around and elbowing him in the ribs again. "Yeah, I suppose I do. I want to settle down someplace nice and make things with my hands." She paused, then added: "These hands have done a lot of awful things, and I want to make something beautiful with them."

Isaiah sensed that there was apprehension that lurked just below the surface of her words - there was a reason she was bringing it up, and while he had his guesses as to why, he didn't dare voice them. She'd been shaken by the ordeal with Lilith and Glaboski and this was her way of trying to cope.

But even then, her thinking mirrored his own. The ordeal had given him cause to reflect as well, and he wondered if things had gone too far. Though they'd only known each other for a short while in the grand scheme of things, Isaiah had a feeling about her; a gentle knot in his chest when he considered the possibility of spending his life with her. It felt too soon to say anything about marriage, or at the very least a lifelong commitment, but... someday, maybe.

"I'm scared," she whispered softly. "Not of death or getting hurt or anything like that. I'm scared that I've missed out on things I might never get a chance to experience again if I keep going. Every year I get to this point and say I'm going to hang up my wings and settle down, and every year I convince myself to carry on. I don't want this year to be like all the others."

"Then don't let it," he said to her, leaning forward to take her hand. "No one's forcing you to fly. You've got nothing to prove to anyone. You're Elite. You're filthy fucking rich. And you've got me," he said with a laugh.

She smirked at that. "Yeah. I guess you're right." She sank back into his embrace and sighed softly, resting her head on his chest. "Do you think we should get out of here?"

"In a bit," he replied, rubbing her shoulder. "Let the crowd die down a little, then we'll leave."
01 Jan 2017, 3:08pm
Ten was deep in thought when the countdown began, so she failed to notice until the crowd began to cheer as the new year had arrived. Startled by the sudden liveliness of the bar, she jerked suddenly, nearly rising out of her seat. She had drawn her blade in reflex during the moment, and it had nearly knocked over Mhera's drink.

Realizing what had happened, she relaxed almost immediately, taking deep breaths to calm herself down. The thin blade retracted itself, and her split hand returned to its normal shape with a faint click.
