General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Marra closes her eyes, lost in the moment, the music and the intoxicating sensuality of the dance.

Idris is alert as ever, his mirrored visor locked onto the newcomers as he makes his assessments; civilian dressed, but obviously military. Inexperienced. Except for the man who appears to be their CO. He's a veteran.

He continues his silent vigil, still clutching the black "30" balloon.

Markus held up a hand politely.
"No thanks. Not good for my.. anatomy." He tapped his chest.
"Not particularly." He continued. "Had a bit of a bad scrap in last night from the Warrens." He pointed to he bruised face. "Anyhow.. I don't plan on staying here for long. Only problem is, how's a Taipan and her two pilot's gonna get anywhere?"
Markus saw Amar give him a questioning look.
"Err, one I mean. Must be the wine."
Markus sipped at his drink. "Not very far I can tell you that."
11 Jan 2017, 6:48am
Amar nodded, "The Tiapan is a helluva fighter. Really enjoy the time I have logged in one of those." He thought for a second, "Really, you had a scrap in the Warrens? I thought I would have heard of that." Guess the sec forces in the Warrens have been looking the other way... Again. Really, it's like that one sector can not be patrolled without influencing the men in a less then amiable way.

He thought slowly about the predicament that Markus was in. It was obvious to him that there was something Markus wanted to keep hidden. A second passenger perhaps, someone on the run, someone with a bounty, or maybe someone in the right and hunted for the wrong. Whatever it was, it was not his concern. Well not yet at least.

"Been, thinking about your problem, there are several great pilots in this room right now. I could introduce you if you wanted. Just out of curiosity, is there somewhere in particular you need to go? Or are you looking to purchase your own Jump capable vessel?
11 Jan 2017, 7:04am
Hope sparked like a flame in a dry field.
But he did not let it consume him.
"It'd depend on who they were, and, what ship they had, and what price they'd be asking for. And yes, Nanonam. As I don't have the credits nor have graduated from the Federation Pilot's Academy, owning my own ship won't be much of an option at the moment."

He paused a moment.

"The better question though, is what will you be charging for such an introduction?"

Charging? Since when had he ever charged for anything? He had to give the man some credit, He had most of his avenues covered.

"Well, I, personally, have never charged." And I never will... "There are several world class pilots out there." Nodding to the booth Luke was sitting in, he said, "Over there is Luke Mitsukai. Heck of a pilot. Flies a Asp. I don't know how big of a ship you need to get to Nanomam. Also you might need a pilot with the right security clearances." Amar gazed off into the distance, then snapped back to reality. "I don't know if Luke would have them. Rebecca Hail might, but there was a rumor that she retired. I personally don't take much stock in rumors. Then you have Stryker, if anyone can get you into Nanomam its him."

Curiosity got the better of him...

"Why exactly do you want to go to Nanomam? That's pretty deep in Fed space, and forgive me for prying, but your accent is definitely not from Federal space. How big of a ship do you need?"

Amar paused realizing he had just bombarded Markus with information and asked several questions without waiting for a response. To make matters worse, his military background had gotten the better of him. Instead of playing the game, he cut straight to chase. He felt frustrated with himself, once again the training had surfaced. Once again, he mentally cursed himself.
11 Jan 2017, 9:08am
Markus nodded slowly with every name given, milking in the appearance and sound of each Commander the man pointed to or listed.

He didn't like the chance with Luke, for despite his amiable sound and look, the Asp's size didn't allow for the Taipan to fit in.
Though he didn't see this Rebecca Hail in the bar, he worried as to what the term "retired" defined to, and what she retired from.
Let's make an evaluation: if this man says that he knows her, and he's ex-Federation, chances are that this person is too. And based on what he's saying, if she were up to the task that is, not only would she definitely be able to grant me entrance.. but is probably ex- military as well.. Baised on my luck, she'd probably be a dangerous one too. A body guard, an assassin, let's throw in the chance at being a cyborg too or something deadlier. Any of which could lead to unpleasant consequences.

However the final alternative was not any better either, he duly noted, watching as the massive show of a man danced with a woman atop of a table.
Dirty dancing, ridiculous in size, probably drunk too and - Markus took a long look at one Stryker's biceps. Guessing those aren't balloons under that skin, incredible strength, the worst possibility of them all. Piss him off and all he'd have to do is snap me like a pencil. Piss off his friends... I took a double take to the severe looking women, and the even larger man dressed in his iron armor. Only God knows that outcome.
Then he noticed something. It was weird to think, but the way that he handled the woman on the table did not project a roughness about him. His movements were calculated, and adjusting. It wasn't him thabwaandrunk, but the others besides him. It was odd.
My thoughts on his character changed immensely.
He was someone who respected women, rather than idolize and utilize. Someone who was responsible. Someone maybe, just maybe, good at heart on the inside, despite his notorious friends.
It was a stupid thought really to trust a pirate. But it'd be his best chance.
Were, my choices in life any different though? Never did I beat a slave nor treat them rudely. I only did it because I had to. If there were any indication that he too was in the same boat as me-

Before he could respond with his believed best choice Epsilon continued firing, launching a barrage of pointed ended questions at him.
Markus realized that by ignoring to answer he would end the game, and so his chance at victory.
Instead he chose to answer carefully, and which question, to answer more carefully still.

"I owe someone a debt, regarding my desire to travel to Nanonam. And I can only make good of it if I get there quickly, and in one piece. The Taipan I spoke earlier about, the SS Hummingbird, was given to me by a dear friend of mine. It's the only thing I have of him to remember... Which leads to my need for size. So I can bring said ship, and my few personal belongings, with me."

He looked back at Stryker.

"If you could grant me an audience with that Stryker fellow over there, Sir, preferably when that woman's party is nearing an end, I would be very much appreciative."

CMDR Joshua Snow was throughly buzzed.

He sat in an alcohol-induced stupor. He stared off at nothing in particular. Through the alcohol-induced buzz, he felt a sense of discomfort, a bit of loneliness and depression. He stared at his drink, and wondered if he kept drinking at this pace, if he would eventually find solace in the bottom of a bottle, trying to wash away the constant restlessness and sense of dissatisfaction he could not name.

Old soul...old soul. Where are you going, old soul?

Joshua did not know the answer to that question.

He stood up, and walked over to where the Commander who offered everyone free drinks was at. "Hullo there," Snow's words were a bit slurred. He looked at Epsilon, "Thanks for the drinks."

Amar leaned back at the bar and nodded. Styker was the go to for quick fixes to complex problems. Right now, he was enjoying himself atop the table. Amar looked on, frankly he was a little shocked by Markus' decision, however he understood. He may not have know his thought process, but he understood. I am surprised he didn't ask me. I could have gotten him to... Oh well. Freelancing was a past activity he reminded himself.

A thoroughly inebriated commander approached thanking him. His words were slurred, thanking him. Amar smiled and said, "No problem. Hope you had a great time tonight." Placing his glass on the bar, he extended his hand to the new comer. After shaking his hand, he turned back to Markus.

The party really did not have a foreseeable end. Well not a quick one anyway. "Sure thing." What have I gotten myself into this time?

"Markus, what time frame are you looking at here?" he said, absentmindedly. Not expecting an answer. "Anyway, to your health Markus." After toasting to his health, Amar said, "I'll see what I can do. To be honest, it might be better to wait until tomorrow." He knocked back the last of his whiskey. "Barkeep! Lavian Brandy."

Jemine, thoroughly enjoying herself gyrating with Stryker and Marra atop the table, wraps her arms around the pirate queen's shoulders and leans forward to whisper in her ear.

"You're a good dancer, honey, " she says. "And I have had a lot to drink. So I am going to get down off the table and dance on the deck. But you stay up here and keep dancing with your husband."

Jemine glances up at Stryker's handsome features. "He is your husband, isn't he?" she asks Marra, uncertainly.

Marra joins Jemine as she climbs down from the table.

"Him? No," she shakes her head, "my husband is..." she pauses to take a drink, her eyes distant, "estranged."

She's quiet for a few moments, tracing her lower lip with the top of her bottle. Then her gaze focuses back on Jemine with a smile; "He's tall, handsome and can handle himself. A bit stupid, though. You'd like him."

She laughs, dropping back down onto her seat.

Lilith:
Silently grateful the table hadn't collapsed under the weight of the three dancers, Lilith sat enjoying her alcohol induced buzz while listening in to the conversation around her. She barely suppressed a grin as Glaboski returned to the booth empty handed.

She'd long since given up trying to talk to anyone, instead just awaiting others to initiate any form of interaction. Although she hadn't failed to spot the one eyed man enter, she was too drunk to do anything about it.

*Why do they always show up at the worst times??* She thought to herself, still intent on getting her own back on him and his robot friend.

Luke:
Luke watched as the man limped away again, feeling a bit sorry for him but secretly quite chuffed too. He still had Mheras hand in his, deciding to let her initiate the release while enjoying the feeling of her smooth skin against his palm.

He completely forgot about Ten and Cartlidge sitting by him. Lost in the moment. He'd missed this and it was only now he was realising just how much.

Alcohol is a hell of a drug. Technically classified as a depressant, it can make a happy person happier, or a sad person sadder. Which might go some way to explain why the small gesture, usually reserved as a sign of affection, had such a profound effect on him.

Here he was, intent on flying out in his Anaconda to face aliens head on, for better or worse, and someone doing something as small as holding his hand had him questioning even that. Hell, a passing thought had him contemplating asking Mhera to join him. It was her job right?

Giving himself a mental shake he put it down to the drink. But still kept hold of her hand nonetheless.
11 Jan 2017, 3:08pm
Stryker hopped off the table, a bit sweaty as Dr. Glaboski returned. He had enjoyed himself.

been awhile since I had a good dance. He sat next to Jem, draping a massive arm along the back rest behind her

"You seemed to have calmed down abit." He said quietly across the table to Lilith.

There was something about this woman. In his mind, he thought she was trying to hard to present herself as being gritty. He gave a short chuckle.

Lilith:
Lilith simply shrugged in response.

"Let's just say I'm being civil for the sake of the birthday girl." She answered back quietly, taking another shot of Achenar Blue. What was that? 10? 11? She'd lost count in all the commotion, but didn't miss the mans chuckle despite being as inebriated as she was.

"What's so funny?" She scowled back at him.
11 Jan 2017, 3:33pm
Mhera held Luke's hand. She felt awkward. Because of the situation, but deep in her heart, she wished it was Stryker's hand she was holding. She wished it was Stryker sitting next to her. It was hard being in a ship with two other people; which had taken intimacy with each other, leaving her feeling like the third wheel.

He's probably jerk anyway. she was a bit surprised that swore, even in her mind. Mhera, that's not befitting if a researcher.....Your a diplomate for the institute of higher learning you represent. There is more to life then carnal pleasures.......Oh who am I kidding....

She squeezed Luke's hand... She was torn. She kissed him on the cheek, but secretly she kissed the man whom she had a crush on.

"Thanks, she said to Luke. That man who just came over here....he....Something wasn't right about him....." Then looking to Cartridge. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be exclusive. It's just been quite overwhelming with all that's been going on here." She paused. "Are you and Ten related?"

Marra leans forward, gesturing at Lilith with her bottle.

"So I got your name - Susan? No! Lilith! You didn't tell me what you do."

She adds with a smirk; "Other than scream at people in bars."
