General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

The bartender dropped off a sealed bottle of the rum Cait requested, and she produced a short blade from inside her jacket to take off the seal. The bartender returned with two tumblers full of ice, and Cait poured a small amount into both glasses.

"You like butterscotch?" she asked Isaiah, sitting down on the bar stool next to him.

"Not particularly," he said, peering down into the glass and inhaling the scent wafting from it. "I've never had Topaz navy rum. Is that what it tastes like?"

"Nope. Shut up and drink," Cait replied, lifting her glass as he did the same.

They clinked glasses, and Isaiah took a small sup, letting the liquid hit his tongue and linger for a few moments. Notes of vanilla and cinnamon, as well as a hint of wood and some kind of spice added a slight burn to his tongue as he swallowed. It was smooth though, and his eyes widened.

"Not bad, right?" Cait asked, having done the same. "Used to have to fight over a bottle of this stuff in my Navy days. It's actually easier to come by a bottle out here than it is in Facece, I've found."

"When was the last time you were in Facece anyway?"

"Gosh... years? Haven't had a reason to go back." Cait took the bottle and poured herself another round. "Might have to now though. This bottle isn't too old - still has some of that ethanol flavor to it, you know? The aged stuff is so smooth..." her voice drifted off. She turned the bottle over in her hands, reading the label.

For a moment, her mind drifted to Lilith. They were supposed to have a drink together after all that had happened. Cait idly wondered where she might be.

Knock it off.

"Maybe we'll make a stop on the way back to Prism, see if we can't get our hands on an old bottle," Isaiah said, pouring himself another glass as well. "How fast does this hit you, anyway?"

"Oh, you'll know," Cait replied with a slight smirk. "Slow your roll though, don't need you getting too far ahead of me."

Kazick walked into the bar with the faint clunk of mag boots and the rattle of buckles from both his belt and jacket. He eyes up the the bar, be for seeing where the bartender is and grinning.

"Just the person I needed to see, can I get two Achenar Blue's?" Kaz says, flashing his ID bracelet to pay.

After getting his drinks, he finds an open and quiet part of the bar to st.

John casually strolled into the Ingaba and took a look around. There was a growing crowd over near the bar, but that made sense - it was a bar. He shrugged inwardly and slowly made his way over toward one of the cubby booths, waving down one of the waitresses as he moved.

"What'll it be, sugar?" she asked as she drew near.

"Old Sol, please," he asked as he deposited a credit chip on the tray she held balanced in her hands.

"Glass or bottle?"

"Bottle. Keep the change," he said and resumed his path toward the booth as the waitress moved off.

Jemine raises her glass to Marcus, and smiles at the crowd of people gathering at the bar.

"I found myself on the wrong end of a missile attack earlier. My ship was so badly damaged I barely made it back to port. But here I am, alive to tell the tale and fight another day."

She takes a sip of her drink, feeling its warm glow in her throat. The gin's mild hallucinogenic effects would soon begin to kick in and, sighing in anticipation, she turns to speak to Phisto.

"There's no harm in celebrating, and it's always better to do it in company, isn't it?"

Jemine regards Marcus again, and wonders what he could possibly have been doing to get his clothes into such a state.

"It sounds, and looks, like you've had a somewhat shitty day yourself, Marcus. Anything I can help with?"

Phisto nodded at Jemine as he sipped his fresh drink and motioned with his head to Insight, "And if the company is intriguing? Even better! Shitty day or otherwise, those clothes..." Phisto grinned, "...and odor most certainly have a story to them."

Nsite raises his elbows, being careful to not spill a drop of his drink and takes a quick sniff of his shirt and underarm. He winces slightly as it was painfully obvious, even to him, that his mixture of body odor, mechanical grease, and whatever else that had been mixed in over the past couple of weeks was far from pleasant if one were to get too close.

"Not so bad..." He says rather unconvincingly. He looks up at both Jemine and Phisto...

"Man... you both must really have needed a drink to be willing to stand this close" - A gentle and relieved laugh escapes his lips- it had been a while since he had company, and the last bit he did have wasn't exactly fond to see him.

Marcus flags the bartender, who is obviously trying to keep a distance as well.

"Three old sols for three old souls." The drinks quickly arrive, Marcus keeps his elbows to his sides, awkwardly passing them out.

"Well Jem... Lets toast to living to tell another one." He looks to Phisto...

"Ever heard that expression a deal too good to be true? Me neither, but I wish I would have about half way to the new Colonies when that deal of a power plant decided to give out while in super cruise..." Marcus drops his chin as his upper body gives in to an exaggerated sigh. He's smiling, however, whether in a state of relief or comical defeat is anyone's guess.

"How am I standing here right now?" He looks up to Jem, "You sound like you've been in your fair share of tight spots, can you relate to that feeling you get in the midst of one where you couldn't be more positive this one's the one?"

A quick glance back at Phisto "Or worse... whatever that unknown greater power behind the universe is might be intentionally excluding you from that long peaceful ride to paradise." He looks in between his two new acquaintances and somewhat stares off into nothingness, a feigned look of surprise glossing over his demeanor as he slowly raises his glass to his lips, ".... he, she, or it knows me pre-tty well apparently.." He takes a sip and grimaces as the harsh liquor scorches his throat.

A strained voice manages to squeak out some words immediately after as he looks at Phisto... "How bout your day?"

He wipes his lips and leans close to Jem "We'll call it a tie" he says under his breath, giving her arm a friendly nudge with his elbow.
05 Jan 2017, 2:41pm
“My day?” Phisto raised an eyebrow, “My day…” he looked down into his glass, and paused.

If they know they can remember too. Someday your power plant might go out in supercruise - and you’re a terrible mechanic, just like he used to joke.

“I thought I’d find someone here, a merchant, back in the Pilot’s Market. Last time I was here, he had just what I was looking for. Was hoping to do business with him again, but he’s gone off station. Big galaxy, so we know how unlikely it is I’ll ever find him again.

Phisto took another drink, and continued, “When I say I’m celebrating, it’s not all happiness, but more than a little... “ he paused, looked at Marcus, and clenched his free hand into a fist while his body stiffened,

Calm. Down.

“...frustrating.” His body relaxed, he smiled honestly, and tipped his glass to Marcus in a salute, “But that’s the dance, isn’t it? Just like you said. We do what we do until we're ferried off to the great unknown.”
05 Jan 2017, 2:50pm
Jemine takes another sip of her G&T, and glances doubtfully at the waiting glass of Old Sol.

"When a man walks into a bar and offers drinks all round," she begins, "it generally means he has something he wants to say. And I'm a good listener."

Finishing her drink, Jemine places the empty glass on the bar counter, then picks up the tumbler of Old Sol and stares thoughtfully into it. "As for tight spots, well... I've been in one or two. But I don't believe there's any power, great or otherwise, preventing you from following your heart's desire. Oh, I offer up the odd prayer to Gaia every now and then, but I think that ultimately we're all responsible for our own successes... and failures. The secret is to celebrate the first and learn from the second. A secret I've only recently learned."

Jemine raises the glass in salute, then downs the drink in one go. "Lovely," she says, with a slight grimace. "Another?"

Stryker sauntered into the bar. The massive bodybuilding mechanic was wearing his usual cut stringer tank-top, this time with a logo printed across the front, though some of it had been cut off. It would read "Iron Asylum." His pants were simple ripped blue jeans and a utility belt slung low across the hip. The boots were black combat with metal plates riveted and strapped to the shin and toe. He glanced around.

Busier then usual.... and as he wondered why, the answer came to him.

Free drinks... Catching an eye, Stryker nodded his appreciation to the man that was offering to buy everyone refreshments. He noted the woman with him. She was pretty...

"Water, lemon, no ice." He said to the bartender, and low and behold, who did he spot....Ten. She was with someone, and it wasn't that idiot Cartridge for a change. He smiled and made his way over to the duo, grabbing a chair, and spinning it. The feet dragging along the floor. The large man sat in it backwards.

"Hey Ten. Where's 'One-Eyed Willy?' Still trying to get that boot off his FSD?" He said with a smirk turning his attention to Mhera. "And you are?"

Marcus simply watches Jemine for a second as she tosses back the Sol, he shakes his head from side to side, enamoured by her display of grit.

"By all means..." Marcus looks as if he were going to to continue, but stops abruptly, his mouth open wide as he catches himself before saying something crass..

.'...aaaa-hmmmm.' He stammers. He narrows his eyes dramatically at Jem, exchanging his open mouth for an endearingly childish smile.

"Didn't play with too many dolls as a kid, did you?"

He looks back over the crowd, leaning back against the bar casually, crossing his arms as he does.

"My something to say... To be honest it's some seriously deep stuff so I'll give it to you in as few of words as possible."

He seems to materialize three shots of Sol from behind his back like some bar magician and hands them to his new friends. In the process his eye line catches Stryker as he walks in, and returns his acknowledgement with a respectful nod, whilst fluidly carrying on with his 'performance'.

Reminiscent of an old timer boring the younger generation in regards to how hard it was back in the day before frame shift, he begins his cynical proclamation.

"See when you're stuck out there in deep space for weeks, and the only light you have comes from the faint purple glow of a dying star and a tiny flash light you may have accidentally borrowed permanently from some bro---I mean ladie's purse,- likely waiting to die a cold, thirsty, innocuously foul smelling death, you really get time to think about things... you get a perspective. You start to come to some realizations about it all... for instance--" he takes a long pause and raises his glass to the group-- "showers... they don't just benefit me- they benefit all of us when I take them." He raises his glass and takes his shot. Coughing uncomfortably afterwards.

"In fact, I'm gonna go find a place round here to take one right now." He nods at the group and grabs his jacket off his chair.

"Keep it goin' bartender, on me all night."

He slaps his fist down on the bar twice quickly in salute to the service, and turns back to his two new friends.

"You two... go easy on my wallet tonight, yeah?"

He reaches for Phisto's hand as if to shake it. "I have a knack for finding things... let me know if I can help out in some way down the line."
05 Jan 2017, 8:26pm
*Quietly walks in and makes his way to the bar*

Umm *eyeing all the liquor on offer* You don't happen to have any warm milk do you?
05 Jan 2017, 10:07pm
Grinning mightily with a laugh to match, Phisto raises his glass with Marcus and downs the drink in unison.  Gripping Marcus' outstretched hand, Phisto's demeanor shifts.  Eyes narrowed, his still warm mirth is tinged with an intensity,

The universe can't play dice.

"Your dark night in the black produced the best kind of revelation: the practically useful," Phisto shook Marcus' hand firmly, attempting to communicate a sense of solidarity, "I will call on you some day soon.  But for now, I simply wish you good luck."

Marcus validates Phisto's sentiment by returning a firm grip. With his free hand he grabs his shoulder and shakes it, conveying his appreciation.

"Good times."

Marcus looks over to Muttley and grins. "I'm sure there's something worth a try up there." He turns towards Jem and gives her a nod as he prepares to leave.

Stryker raised his muscular tattooed arm, holding the glass of water aloft.

"Milk with a touch of coffee liquor is quite nice." He would say in greeting to the new comer.

Kaz grunts from the corner of the bar. "Coffee liquor, man that stuff the worst."

He sips from his Achenar Blue. "However, this whisky is all right. It's no rum, and it sure is hell aint that stuff I got back on my ship. But this, this will do."
