General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

It felt kinda strang walking on a surface that wasn't the Onion's deck. It was cold too. only thing other than my Remloc was an old beat up brown coat. The lights from the bar made me squint as I entered. I could really go for a drink and some real food. Arid said this was a good place to stop in. I make my way to the bar and look around for the bar keep. Seeing the large group of people by the booth he was glad he had his blades. "looks like a powder keg..."
"what will it be?"
"Double gold , neat and what do you have to eat?"

Dr. Glaboski was pissed. He didn't much like being turned down, but his facial features gave none of this way. Glaboski despised women. There were nothing more then tools to be used to further his agenda, or pleasure. And he wasn't about to be upstart by a homely pie face broad. He watched Stryker and Jem cuddle, and this further annoyed him.

That should be me, not that grotesque mass of muscle... he thought savagely. Though his spirits were lifted upon hearing Marra tear into Lilith.
12 Jan 2017, 12:05am
Lilith:
"So what... If I decided to just, I dunno, shoot you here and now. Gigantor here would just say Oh well... Onto the next contract???" Lilith spat. "After all... People die."

Realising that will definitely be taken as a threat she raised her hands in mock surrender.

"Just saying, of course." She added, turning to Jemine as she got up to dance again, "I will gladly drop the subject when I'm no longer being interrogated on it... Oh and Nic, the fact this guy or guys are Imperial has nothing to do with it. Hell, if I had reason to believe it was you I was after, rest assured I'd have no qualms about it whether you were Fed, Imp, Alliance or even Thargoid. Why... Just ask Saint Glaboski over here... Go on, tell them why you're on a cane all of a sudden??"

She stretched out, put her hands behind her head and relaxed. At this point she was either about to be killed, or respected and the alcohol had her not caring which one. What did it matter to Marra about her motivations? Every Imp or Fed ship looking for Lilith was one less looking for Morgan, she was practically doing her a damned favour!!

Luke:
"That's just it. New experiences are why I joined the Pilots Federation in the first place. So why wouldn't I chase them down???" Luke replied to Mhera, "Don't get the wrong idea, I'm not about to wave hello then off myself. I just... Dunno... Something is changing. Something is ending and I don't know what. I can't explain it..."

He took a breath realising he was working himself up over nothing. Smiling at Mheras concern for him by pushing the bottle out of reach.

"Thanks..." He mumbled, "Look... You ever look forward to something so much you can't see beyond it? Like Christmas or New Years... Hell... Even a birthday? That's what this is like to me. Only... There's something darker about it this time. Like, this was the one thing I've been after my whole life... So... Afterwards.... What?"

A brief pause again as he noticed the officer had taken a seat by them.

"Hey... Amar? Right? Trying my best... Free booze ain't helping though, but that's your fault." He joked trying to brush off his ramblings. "Sorry you had to hear all that, all of you... I don't drink often..."

Realising it would be up to him to make the introductions he picked his words carefully to avoid any implications. Pointing at each member of the group as he called the names.

"Ten, Cartlidge, Mhera... This is Amarthanor. This lovely fella thought I killed someone outside the bar a while ago. But was kind enough to hear my side of things and... Well... Here I am." He spread his arms wide in a gesture of freedom, knocking over an empty bottle, "Ahem.... I think I'll stick to water now...."

Ignoring Lilith's second tirade, Stryker grinned at Jem's suggestion. He stood up out of the booth, taking her hand and leading the lovely woman to the dance floor. At least, to the patch of open space that would soon become one. The lights twinkled through the haze, and he was having a great time.

He was still shirtless, and he didn't care. He enjoyed her presence. He enjoyed her being close, and he enjoyed dancing and despite being so large, he knew how to. The bodybuilder wrapped an arm around her waist and took her hand in his organic. Looking down and gazing int her eyes, he started leading her in a slow dance, but not at all formal.

"And how about now?" He asked.

He didn't want to push things to fast or to far. But if she was expecting more, he would deliver.

Glaboski smiled at Lilith. His devious cunning mind was formulating a plan.

"My dear..." He said to her, "...How I came about my limp, is really none of your concern. But if your curiosity must be satiated, then so be it." He took a glass of whatever was nearby.

"I was born with a rare congenital syndrome. It is called Cotrad Syndrome. One, in approximately twenty five million live births suffer from it. Most, do not live until the age of two. Progenative cells, have all but mitigated the disease. But I fear, that for some of us, our bodies rejected the treatment. I am lucky to be alive. And only with a limp. I could very well be a vegetable surviving on life support."

He took a slow sip of the drink and pulled a sour face.

"Because of this, I have dedicated my life to helping those that suffer from debilitating genetic abnormalities."

Glaboski raised a glass to salute Lilith with a wry grin.

Lilith:
"You are fucking joking right???" Lilith nearly shouted, "You're telling me that Ms Morgan here has no clue she's employed a sadistic pervert who never got over his divorce? With a bullet hole in his skull to boot I might add!!"

She took out her datapad and pulled up the files Bloodfeather had pulled for her, as well as the images of his various Susans.

"I don't care if you have need for him. But I will not have him throw around this I'm the victim bullshit." She growled, sliding the pad over for everyone at the table to see. Making sure it remained just beyond Glaboskis reach.
12 Jan 2017, 1:15am
Dr. Glaboski continued his fiendish smile.

"I really have no idea who, you or what you are on about..." He said smoothly. He reached down and pulled out a identification chip.

"My name, is Doctor Ryan Jones."

He slid the identification over to the emotionally unstable woman.
12 Jan 2017, 1:21am
Amar shook everyone's hand at the table, and then said, "Pleasure to make your acquaintances." He looked over at Cartlidge while addressing Luke, "Yeah, sorry about that on both accounts, alcohol and that confusion..." He paused as he noticed raised voices. Worried that the cadets had gotten into trouble, he turned slowly to see what was going on. Seeing nothing particularly disconcerting, he turned back to Cartlidge and continued. "Hey, didnt we meet in the Docks? Someone was trying to hire you..." His voice trailed off, as he noticed the voices becoming more and more raised.

Now silent, he turned to face the scene. What he saw was a woman, What was her name? Lillith? And a doctor, they had just about started a shouting match, and Lillith was displaying a datapad to her table, and from his position, he could actually see what was on display. His expression went from jovial to sober as he saw what was displayed on the datapad. Holy Shit?!?! What the fuck is going on over there? Some of the cadets had turned to look at the scene, and this troubled Amar. The last thing he wanted was for a cadet to stick their nose into someone else's problem and get hit. Because then it becomes my problem!

He tried to ignore the commotion and return to the people he had joined at the table, but something didn't sit right with him. He had that feeling in his gut that something was definitely about to disrupt the mood of the bar.

"Sorry about that, as I was saying, the docks... Meh, it doesn't matter. How's business?" He said, addressing everyone at the table.
12 Jan 2017, 2:58am
Mhera wanted to know more. She wanted to ask Luke what he meant, but decided to stay quiet. She listened to Amar.

These two know each other from some earlier engagement....Murder? She looked surprised, but she was relieved that the accusation turned out to be false.

She looked over at the loud lady again. The one that made an accusation against the man that introduced himself earlier. She couldn't hear what she said, exactly didn't much like the tone, and it added to her anxiety.

The large man was dancing again with the dark haired woman. Mhera tired to ignore him, but again found herself imagining herself in a different scenario...

"Oh..." She returned her attention to Amar. "I don't own a business....." she said dimly, caught unaware.

That's not what he meant... "I mean, I'm a researcher. Pleasure to meet you."
12 Jan 2017, 3:27am
Cartlidge thought hard for a moment, but failed to come up with anything. "Mmm... I honestly can't really remember. Sounds a little odd, though. I don't usually put myself up for hire like that."

Ten sat silently, recalling once more the events that had taken place during her previous visit. They were still quite unpleasant to think about. She took a deep breath and gently began tapping her favorite song into the table.

"As for business," Cartlidge continued, "We haven't been able to do much lately, since our ship is... in the process of being repaired."

The moment Lilith mentions shooting Marra, Idris' huge gloved hand clamps firmly on the back of her neck.

Marra watches the exchange between Glaboski and Lilith blankly.

"Look," she begins, her voice soft and slurred, "I don't know either of you and I don't give a fuck about either of you. Marital problems?" she pauses to sneer, "Yeah, I could tell you about those. Go see a fucking lawyer."

She waves her hand dismissively, her eyes half-closing as she tilts her bottle for another drink.

Idris gives a deep rumble from his chest.

Snow watched as a woman started screaming at someone, making him feel uncomfortable, an eavesdropping bystander to someone's personal drama. The copious alcohol was also making him feel very tired, and lonely. He remembered someone telling him about how one should never drink alone. He didn't remember who said it, but he felt that there was a lot wisdom in those words.

Snow was never inclined to be social. He doubt that he could drink enough liquid courage to tear off his shirt and start dancing on top of a table, but he definitely drank enough to mingle with the patrons. Some of these people look like pilots, but maybe some of them were locals. It never hurt to get familiarized with the locals and build a good reputation.

He approached Mhera and Luke, who seemed the more approachable and cool-headed. "Hi. I'm Commander Joshua Snow, I'm new 'round these parts. What're your names?"
12 Jan 2017, 12:35pm
Glaboski sighed.

He wasn't about to have Marra play some parental mediator. She was the pirate queen and had more important things to do then to settle petty disputes.
He was, however, he was quite surprised to see how unstable Lilith was emotionally, and was formulating theories as to why. A favorite pass time of his....

Looking to Marra.

"Ma'am, I do apologize. I really do not know this woman, at all." He said in a half truth. He really didn't know her. "But consider this. I have yet to raise my voice. I have yet to make wild accusations. I have kept calm and collected. I believe that, speaks for itself."

He set his glass down, taking the chip back looking directly at Lilith.

"Now excuse me, I have better things to do then to listen to the inane ramblings of someone who is clearly, mentally unstable." He paused for a moment. "They do, make medication for that...."

With that, Dr. Glaboski slid out of the booth, and limped his way to the exit.

"Well, it seems like our party is starting to rival the others," Cartlidge said as he noticed another individual walk up to the booth. The crowd was starting to make him feel a little uneasy. At this rate, anyone would be able to just walk up. Quietly he pulled out his stun pistol and rested it on the top of his knee, where it could be easily accessed.

Ten watched as the man who had approached Mhera earlier limped his way out of the bar. Her curiosity had finally gotten the better of her, so she began searching for any information as to who the man was. To an observer, however, she simply appeared to look up towards the ceiling, as if deep in thought.

"Especially now," says Jemine in reply to Stryker's question, adding, "and I can tell that you feel the same way."

Snuggling in close, she smiles as she feels the quickening beat of Stryker's heart. Allowing herself to be led in a slow circle, Jemine's attention is drawn to the various groups of people around the bar.

"I think you may have a secret admirer," she says to Stryker. "See the blonde woman at that table? She keeps looking at you, and trying not to. I believe she's jealous."

Another half-turn brings Marra Morgan's table back into view.

"It appears that Lilith is having a difference of opinion with the birthday girl, and now that man with the walking stick is leaving," she observes. "I hope it doesn't spoil Marra's party."

Jemine peers up at Stryker's face. "That's a rather ridiculous thing for me to say," she goes on,   "considering Marra Morgan represents all that I've ever detested in the galaxy. But I suppose even a pirate queen is entitled to have a bit of fun on her birthday."

Gliding her fingertips lightly across Stryker's chest, Jemine catches the unmistakable look in her dancing partner's eye.

"You presumably know Marra well," she asks him, "since you work for her. I know you're not her bodyguard, because that's the big fellow with the balloon. And you're not her husband. So what exactly do you do for Black Omega, Stryker?"
