General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Doctor Glaboski considered Jacob, listening to him, he canted his head slightly.

"Rumors? What kind of rumors?" He asked politely. "Oh, I know that it can be a bit sketchy but don't let that paint your entire view of the region. There are many marvelous things going on out there. Not to mention some of the views. Lets face it. Everyplace has a veritable drain stop that catches all the filth. I dare say, the prejudice of those better off, claiming to know what it is like out there can kiss my boot. Every place has redeeming qualities, if one knows where to look."

He said, slightly annoyed.

"Take this station here. Oh you see the shimmering boulevards of the entertainment district. The lofty apartments in outerring. Yet, right here, under our feet are the warrens. Ever been there? The undesirables. Would you label them all as Thieves, vagrants and vagabonds? Are you that shallow? No, I don't think so. Labels are dangerous things. And labeling an entire region. Tisk. Tisk."

He took a slow steady sip of his drink.

"There are people out there that need help. And I do just that. So while your dancing your waltz with the stars, just remember. There are those less fortunate then you."

His next words were measured, and quite enunciated.

"So, as you discriminate against Black Omega, consider this. They are the only ones that have taken an interest in helping the wretched filth that no one else will. You pilots with your coin purses bursting at the seams; where is your charitable contribution? Would you be willing to donate one of your ships in your vast fleet for the impoverished? Black Omega has."

He sat back looking between the three.

Luke snorted.

"All I said was the borders are good hunting grounds for bounties." He said, "And all he said was he's heard rumours. I don't doubt there are people less fortunate than me. But if I handed one credit over to each person who was, I'd be joining them. Besides, they're not all in the Pegasi Region. I've donated Medical Equipment, even Credits where it's been needed and even transported high value goods around the bubble. You know where I get interdicted the most??? Anywhere surrounding the Pegasi Region..." He breathed and let that sink in for a moment.

*Who does this prick think he is?? Question MY morals??*

"Colour it how you want, but you can't polish a turd, call it chocolate and expect people to not notice the smell." He added with a huff, "I don't doubt there are good people like yourself that are there for whatever reason, trapped or voluntarily, but at the end of the day, the region IS filled with Pirates, it IS dangerous and since charging in and attacking Archon Delaine himself will likely not yield any meaningful results, there's sweet fuck all any lone Pilot can do about it beyond stemming the tide."

It took a moment but he realised he'd let the Doctor get to him. Perhaps it was the alcohol, or maybe he'd struck a nerve, either way it happened much quicker than usual.

"Sorry... I don't mean to.... Just, don't mistake inability to help with unwillingness." Luke replied sombrely, "I've tried going to some of these so called 'humanitarians' before, not in the Pegasi Region mind you, to offer my services and they usually offer up hit ad run contracts for things like medical aid or food. Yet they turn there noses up at being given the same stuff as donations. It makes you wonder if the contract was for the goods, or to stop those goods getting somewhere, and that doesn't sit right with me."
02 Feb 2017, 5:41pm
Glaboski got what he wanted. The emotional outburst. Inwardly he smiled.

Glaboski frowned. "I really wasn't addressing you Luke. Merely Jacob's insinuation of rumors about the region. But what do you propose Luke? Since there is no real way to actively fight the menace with any impact, do we just abandon the people there? No. We make do with what we have. So, I pay my tax, and the people receive health care. Is it ideal? No. But point to one -Just one- planetary system that has a perfect infrastructure. You won't find it."

The doctor poured another drink.

"Let us not talk of politics. It is, a futile endeavor. I am passionate helping those in that area, despite the hardships. And you are passionate about ridding the crime. All I'm saying is that Black Omega is really no different from any other governing system. Unconventional? Probably. But, from what I have seen, I pay them, they help me, so I can help the people. Federal jurisdiction, I pay them, they don't care, and they don't care if the people have help." He paused for a moment. "So, the lesser of two evils."

He patted the man on the shoulder.

Uggh, what ninny....

"Tell me, where has been your favorite destination so far?"
02 Feb 2017, 6:00pm
"It's hardly insinuations... The rumours exist and I've seen enough to believe them." Luke responded, "But... You're right... It's pointless to debate it. They always end the same way anyway."

He accepted the pat on the shoulder with a degree of indifference, he wasn't in need of comfort but nor did he want to seem rude.

"Favourite destination? I honestly don't know." He frowned, thinking for a moment, "I've been to Sagittarius A*, and believe me that's a sight to behold. Black Holes in general are seriously impressive sights. But then there's a place called Mitterand Hollow where you can watch a moon orbit a planet several times an hour. It's actually inside the bubble, a system called Epsilon Indi I think. Sag A* is a hell of a trip, but if you have to go see one sight in your life, it ought to be one of those really."

He smiled at the memory of watching Galnet Vids of other CMDRs circling Black Holes, as the stars behind them appeared to bend around the event horizon, like a rock blocking a water flow. They were a celestial body both fearsome and awe inspiring. Just the tiniest inch too close, and you'll never be seen again.

"If you ever wanted to, I'm more than willing to take you along some time. I recently took possession of a Beluga Liner, so if you don't mind a very long trip in a Luxury Cabin you could use that, or to be there and back again in under 3 days, I can strip my Asp Explorer. But you'll be sacrificing all the creature comforts." Luke said a bit more cheerfully this time. Hoping to keep any ill feelings well and truly at bay. Maybe he was more drunk than he realised?
02 Feb 2017, 6:01pm
The pair sat silently. Cartlidge in particular had felt more than a little awkward, realizing he had struck a nerve, which in turn lead to the doctor setting Luke off. The whole conversation bothered him. The man had just admitted to being associated with Black Omega, a group that was rumored to carry out business with pirates, if not take part in the business itself, to a group of strangers. Luke, in turn, admitted to actively pirate hunting in areas that were commonly controlled by the group. For some, such factors could act as kindling for a fight.

To his relief, however, he chose to drop the argument and change the subject. Cartlidge had wanted to ask more about the man's profession, but decided to wait until his question was answered to speak.

Ten also continued to remain silent. Something about the man made her uncomfortable, and it didn't help that he was a doctor of some sort. As he continued to speak, she couldn't help but scratch gently at the scars that lined her neck.
02 Feb 2017, 6:12pm
Glaboski was pleased.

"You mean you could book me passage? Though, it might be a bit awkward since I unintentionally hit on your girlfriend? I assume, she is your co-pilot?"

He asked taking a sip.

"Hmm. A nice trip someplace some time would be nice...." He sighed and noticed Ten's apprehension. He ignored it for the time being. Some people just didn't like doctors.
02 Feb 2017, 6:28pm
Luke smiled at the thought of Mhera being a co-pilot, she was obviously quite new to space travel from what little he'd seen.

"As I said, you weren't to know. I trust now you'll leave her be though?" He added, deliberately not correcting the fact she wasn't his Girlfriend, but not lying by saying she was either, "Either way, she wouldn't be with us. She has her own business to attend to. I reckon she could survive without me for a few days, maybe a week."

He remembered that he was potentially going to be piloting for Mhera soon though, out into the Pleiades Sector.

"But don't go packing your suitcases just yet, I'll have my own stuff to take care of first." He hastily added, "Commander life can be incredibly free, but yet very restrictive too."
02 Feb 2017, 6:33pm
Taking the brief opportunity, Cartlidge spoke up. "So I was curious. You said something about expanding the knowledge base, but you also said you work a clinic. Do you also do active research or is it more of an admiration kind of thing?"

He noticed Ten growing uncomfortable, and nodded towards the door silently. She shook her head in reply, however, implying that she was all right.
02 Feb 2017, 6:57pm
"Ah, yes sometimes I get a bit fixated on my mistakes. Do forgive me." He said with a smile to Luke.

He cast his attention to Jacob.

"Yes, medical physicians practice medicine. It's why we call it a practice. The idea is to continually learn how to improve upon techniques, diagnosis and patient relationships!" He said brightly.

Though he could care less about the patient relationship.

He turned his attention back to Luke.

"So, what is her line of business if I might inquire?"
02 Feb 2017, 7:19pm
"Funnily enough, she's a scientist a bit like yourself. Although she studies and catalogues plants rather than the human body." Luke replied calmly, "I always get mixed up but I think the term is either Xeno or Astro Biology. Something like that..."
03 Feb 2017, 3:12am
Cartlidge nodded to the man's reply, silently wondering if he had phrased his question properly or not. Either way, it was too late now.
03 Feb 2017, 7:18am
Sydney immediately notices Phisto's gaze and snaps her head in his direction, giving him a cold and aggressive stare.

'Something the matter?' She quips, breaking her stare, returning to her vigilant survey of the crowd. Without looking at him directly she begins to speak to Marcus.

'I'm going to go, I need a drink.' She turns and begins to walk away.

'You're in a bar for christ sake.' Marcus says, increasing the projection of his voice as she gains distance between them.

Marcus sighs and turns to Phisto, he raises his glass.

'To the mysteries of the Galaxy.' He says, gesturing his glass to Phisto's.
03 Feb 2017, 12:46pm
Clinking his beer bottle to Marcus' glass, Phisto agrees, "And the mysteries that should simply be accepted."  He paused, watching Syd walk away, his eyes warm with remembering.

"Where I come from, Marcus, you learn very early on to trust a woman's intuition, her leadership, her ability to read a situation and make the right call.  It's not only because that woman was often your commanding officer, but because they had proven themselves over and over again since colonization."  He sighed, and continued, "I looked at Syd because I was afraid she saw something I didn't, and outside of my ship,  my relatively deadliness decreases quite hilariously."

"How do you know her?"
03 Feb 2017, 1:27pm
Marcus takes a swig of his drink, smirking as he does. He puts his drink down and sighs with an odd look of disbelief on his face. He shakes hes head, letting out another quick laugh-- you know the kind, when it isn't really that funny, but you have no other choice but to admire the swings life throws you from time to time.

'Sydney, her sister Reba...' he pauses for dramatic effect and raises his eyebrow... 'my ex wife... we all grew up together. Kid stuff, you know the drill. Sydney was a trouble maker, younger than us by a few years-- enough that we didn't really appreciate her hanging around until we got older.'

Marcus looks off into the direction of the large holos around the bar, and briefly glances over the room as if trying to take his mind off what he was talking about, even though he seemed as though getting it off his chest was doing him some good.

'Problem is... people grow up, change, all that boring shit. I did, Sydney did, but her sister didn't. She's been a daddy's girl since as long as I knew her. The older I got the less I liked the ex and the more Syd and I saw eye to eye.' Marcus takes another slow sip of his drink.

'Ended up working on some 'things' more often, crewed for one another, got pretty close. She's family as far as I'm concerned. Her sister on the other hand...'

Marcus releases a quick exhale.

'To make a long story short, my marriage was more like an uncomfortable arrangement; we knew it was either going to work right away or not at all. I figured it out in the first few hours. After we did the dutiful wedding deeds and she was fast asleep, I started to feel that I appreciated her dad's ship more than she did, took it, left her on a distant moon, and disappeared. Few months later, guess who I run into out at Merope?'

Marcus gestures towards the door Sydney left from.

'Yep... That was a fun day.'

Marcus winks at Phisto as he finishes the last of his drink.. He lets out a painful grunt as the liquid scorches the back of his throat. He pounds the palm of his hand on the table and exclaims 'Another! Yo barkeep!' Marcus gestures to the bartender.
03 Feb 2017, 1:41pm
Phisto's mouth went crooked with a grin, "You know the old saying, Marcus?  History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes?  We both have young loves that didn't... work out."

Tell him.  Tell him so he can remember too.

"Marcus..." Phisto's face turned, becoming uncomfortable, grimacing at events that happened long ago yet still seemed like mere moments ago, "...I wish I could share so easily as you.  So, that's why I'm asking if you'd like to hear my story," Phisto laughed gently, "Don't worry, it's nothing too drawn out, just... need to know you'll actually listen."

Phisto's right hand slipped into his tuxedo jacket pocket, as if reaching for something comforting.  As he put his hand back to his drink, he visibly calmed, and turned his attention back to Marcus.
