General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Turning to order another Barron's, Phisto notices Borggy's chosen drink and nods in his direction, "Ahoy there, friend.  Are you a newcomer to Ingaba, like myself, or an long time patron?"  Motioning to Tokito, "This here is Tokito, a new acquaintance of mine.  He's quite the character, if you fancy that sort of thing."

Nodding back to Tokito, Phisto smiles at both people and takes a draw from his new beer.
16 Jan 2017, 10:30pm
Mathias sips from the bottle of Barron and before he could swallow someone speaks in his direction. Looking to the man with uncertainty yet discerning the friendly tone of his voice. Mathias nods to Phisto and Tokito.

"Hey, err, yes I'm new here. It has been a long time since I've been to a place like this", Mathias draws in a bigger sip that turns into a gulp.

"Ahhhhh, just here to unwind before heading to Colonia. See what the place is like now whilst collecting data. All the fun stuff", he smiles not a Phisto or Tokito but to himself. After another gulp he decides to place down the bottle, scratch his hair and beard, regarding Phisto, wondering.

"How about you, what's your line of work...if you don't mind me asking?
17 Jan 2017, 2:09am
Phisto smiled gently at Borggy, "No, I don't mind you asking at all.  Much can be gleaned from what a person does for a living, so the question is naturally very efficient," he stood up straighter, adjusting his tuxedo jacket and smoothing his vibrant red shirt, "I lead a small wing of combat pilots.  Not to put too fine a point on it, but we kill people, often for payment.  We're not too picky, and if I don't say so myself, we are very good at it."
17 Jan 2017, 3:37am
Tokito raises his glass towards the bearded newcomer "How goes it brother? As said before to Phisto here, I'm a free man that goes where he pleases and does what he desires! Living the life of True freedom!" He gives the two a hearty laugh before downing the rest of his glass's contents.

"Sadly all theses laws in this sector are holding me back so I'm not sure how longer I'll be sticking around. Docking management was pretty rude, forcing me to submit to cargo scans before i was allowed to dock..." Tokito's eyes trail off to somewhere random in the bar. He spaces out for a moment before returning focus to the two "Rude right? I told them i wasn't carrying shit.."
17 Jan 2017, 3:48am
Mathias finishes his beer and gestures to the bartender for another. He cracks open the cap, "Thanks", Mathias sends a wink.

Phisto's smile caught Mathias's attention and when he saw him straightening it sent an initiative for Mathias to dash off the stool or use the beer bottle as defence. Yet nothing happens and remains calm.

Eyebrows raise when he hears Phisto's profession...Killing people, huh?

"Indeed, sounds like you take a lot of pleasure from it. I remember being in GalCop, being security and all...very long time ago now, so I'll be rusty as an ol' bucket of bolts"

He takes a swig

"The galaxy is dangerous, I get it, I guess somebody has to keep it safe even though bounty hunting wouldn't be my number one priority, or whatever you want to call it"

His eyes drift upon Tokito

"So...is he one of those characters then?
17 Jan 2017, 3:59am
Tokito's glass waved in the air, and the laugh.

Mathias looks away and down to the desk his arms lay across, taking another swig, and then grins.

"Ahh, he's one of those, bless", Mathias whispers and then turns to face Tokito again, raising his bottle, yet not too enthusiastically.

"They are only doing their job, my friend. I don't have a problem with it...seeing that I don't have a cargo bay", Mathias chuckles.

"Except for my SRV of course, but who cares about that, you can hardly fit anything in it!"

*Maschil Crane enters the "InGaBa" for his first time. Quietly, observing he takes in his surroundings as he approaches the bar. Maschil silently agrees to himself and gives a slight nod of approval at the comment a man that he has heard called "Tokito" made about 'being a free man and doing whatsoever he pleases wheresoever he pleases to do so' and decides that he may introduce himself to this man before the nights end.

'He carries an heir of confidence & diligence that could prove invaluable to my endeavors' Maschil speculates, 'but I am new to this part of the galaxy and experience has taught me that when in doubt, play it safe. Even when you think you sure. Especially when in an unfamiliar system.'

So, in order to loosen up his nerves a bit and get in the vibe he orders a drink. He decides to keep it old school & classy and over the loud chatter of the relatively crowded bar he shouts

"Hey barkeep, would you mind servin me up an 'Old Sol' when you get a chance? On the rocks please."

"Yes sir, faster than you can say 'FSD initiating'

The barkeep then turned around to bustle with the bottles behind the bar.

Only a moment after Maschil placed his elbow on the counter and head in his hand to rub his temples and reflect on the boisterous and unsettled events of the past week the barkeep returned, faster than Maschil expected actually, with his drink in hand and set it down right in front of him.

"That'll be 300 CR" said the barkeep.

"Cool beans" declared Maschil as he nonchalantly waved it off while the CR was automatically deducted from his balance.

The barkeep eyed Maschil quizzically before asking "Where abouts are you from sir? I cant say Ive ever seen your face before and if I might say so myself Im pretty darn good with faces and I see quite a few of em. The ones from around here at least."

"Further than I'd ever wished to travel." replied Maschil in short.

"Well, whats your name boy? It's nice to meet you." the barkeep responded, noting Maschil's avoidance of the question?

"My name is 'Maschil Crane.'" He said "but you can just call me 'Crane' for short... 'CMDR Crane.', I suppose, is what I'll be called now."

To CMDR Cranes relief someone from down at the other end of the bar shouted belligerently for the barkeep.

"Well, see you around 'CMDR Crane'.... or maybe see you around it seems. Anyhow, it's been a pleasure. Stay safe out there."

"You too." said Maschil quietly as he turned around in his stool, while taking a sip of Old Sol, to regard the congregation and his environment.

'How am I gonna fix this this time?' CMDR Crane thought to him self as he took another sip of his "Old Sol." 'What to do, what to do?'
17 Jan 2017, 4:15am
Tokito shrugs "Well they let me in after they found out I was telling the truth so that's all that matters. Didn't like the odds of firing up the nosy bastard scanning me. I wouldn't last a second against the station'security defences. Just wish station's minded their own business..

Looking back he realizes his glass was empty. Placing it down he signals over to the Bartender to get him a classic Pegasi Moon. As he waits for his drink to finish he returns to his new acquaintance "So what about you brother? What's the story with you? What do you do?"
17 Jan 2017, 9:35am
"They can get in the way, true, when you just can't be bothered. Hey ho..."

However before answering Tokito's question, Mathias notices the bartender to be talking to someone,

Maschil Crane, hm, fancy...

The man appears to have traveled a far distance and looks to be a bit tense. Mathias waves off the notion for now and sets his gaze on Tokito.

"Me? Oh, nothing too fancy. I'm an Explorer, done some other work but primarily I gather celestial data and upload it to Universal cartographics"

God...that must have sound so boring!

Taking a swig, he continues, "It gives me my pay, whilst enjoying the view. Their are some beautiful places out there"

As Tokito receives his pegasi moon, Mathias couldn't refrain a smile. Finishing his second bottle of Barron, trying to work out how it had gone so quickly.

"Bit of a mechanic as well, just to keep the ship going"
17 Jan 2017, 11:19am
After having a few more 'Old Sols' CMDR Crane is feeling a bit little looser. "Maschil" takes another sip while glancing up from his glass to catch another man looking in his direction, but he looked away just as "Maschil" made eye contact. The man that was looking at him happened to be talking to "Tokito." He thought he overheard "Tokito" address the man as "Borggy," but he couldn't be positive over all the buzz. "Maschil" cautiously moved a bit closer to the 2 in order to hear them better.

'Borggy said he was a mechanic and from all that jargon I picked up about his job it sounds like he's a tech head. He also seems like he could be quite skeptical of himself and that, if it is indeed the case, paired with his expertise could prove to be advantageous to me, but I can't be so sure of him yet. "Tokito" on the other hand seems like a rebel, not opposed to breaking a law or 2, and probably has got a wide range of practical & effective skill sets. I could be completely wrong, but I like to think I have a keen sense of character. I do right? Yea, I do. Either way I'm sure these 2 are quite a bit more inebriated than myself and that'll make them likely to be more loose-lipped and sympathetic now than ever. I could find a way to utilize them if I play my cards right. I mean... what's the worst that could go wrong anyways. Worst case scenario I'll have a meaningless conversation with 2 chaps I'll never even think about again or probably even remember at all.

"Maschil" took another gulp then proceeded to walk assuredly towards the duo and, even though he was sure he already knew their names, in an attempt to preserve formalities, a civility he believed was lacking amongst most in these times, says in an assimilating manner.

"Yo. Waddup fellas? You all look like you're havin' a good time. Mind if I join the party?" *laughs forcibly* "My name's 'Maschil'." He said whilst extending his hand out towards the duo, but slightly more-so in the direction of "Borggy." 'Tokito doesn't look like one for acquaintable hand shakes, but let's test the waters. "Maschil" thought quickly to himself. "And what're you 2 called?"

This man Maschil, carefully slides over towards Mathias and Tokito, yet more so to Mathias. He ignores the mans subtle movement and resumes speaking. Afterwards Mathias calls out the bartender.

"Yeah?"

"Hey, you got any more beer, you know...variety?"

The bartender shakes his head, "What you see is what we got I'm afraid!"

Mathias sighs and proceeds to rub his forehead, feeling the merriness swell. Then his eyes flick over to that man again, who apparently is walking straight towards him. Putting on an adamant expression, at least trying to, Mathias unintentionally stares at the man. He introduces himself and extends a hand inclining to Mathias, asking for his and Tokito's names.

Ooo, that laugh, definitely sounded genuine

Mathias takes a moment before grasping Maschil's hand firmly yet not too aggressively.

"Hi, err, yes I over-heard your name, quite fancy", he replies letting go off the mans hand to promptly examining his clothes whilst also catching a whiff of scotch.

"So, what do you do?"
17 Jan 2017, 1:53pm
Phisto nods at Maschii, "My name is Phisto. Please, join us. We're just reviewing our lines of work. Borggy is very interested in that sort of thing," Phisto clasps his hand warmly on Borggy's shoulder, giving him a brief shake to and fro. Removing his hand and clapping them together in front of him once, Phisto announces to the three people in front of him,

"Please, let me get the next round," turning and motioning to the bartender, "The next of whatever these men are having are on me."

Cartlidge only smiles at Luke’s comment. He actually didn’t really like the idea of speculating about the unknown ships, at least until more information was released.

As Luke and Mhera continued their conversation, Ten watched the newcomers over at the bar as they conversed with one another. “Hey, was the individual with the mohawk over there not on the view-screen earlier? How curious.”
17 Jan 2017, 3:09pm
Phisto speaks to Maschil, introducing himself. A hand lands upon his shoulder, causing Mathias to feel mixed emotions. A sense of uncertainty creeps up his spine not sure whether to wiggle a bit, just to throw it off. Phisto's hand however left to clasp with his other hand, startling Mathias. Nerves begin to reside now that it is gone.

Thank goodness! maybe I'm getting too paranoid and he is generally a friendly guy, even though I just met him. It has been a long time since I've really had a social period

Suddenly surprised at Phisto's offer at buying the next round, he thought to keep it casual so Mathias accepts, however....

"Let me pay for my tab first, bartender", the man comes forward, cleaning a glass, Mathias admits that he does a decent job at making them shiny.

"Can I pay for my tab please", Mathias performs a hand motion, a noise alerts him about the credits being deducted.

He smiles and turns to Phisto, flashing a faint smile, "I'll have a...errr", trailing off his eyes lock onto Tokito's drink.

Just one! he thought.

"...A pegasi moon, please", smiling again.
17 Jan 2017, 3:39pm
"So, tell me Mr. Borggy, any beautiful places you care to share about? Anything... stand out for you?" Phisto leaned in slightly, "Exploring isn't something I've ever really done. The occasional jaunt to Maia is about all I can muster, and though while breathtaking in its own right, I understand it's a bit "Commander's First Nebula."
