General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Fair enough" Replied Luke, "Who's this friend of yours then? Nick I presume? You never did get round to introducing us after all."

Leaning back, he relaxed and let his mind wander a bit. Enjoying the 'in between' area of being drunk and sober as another wave of his alcohol consumption began to take effect. Although not quite as bad as before.

Marcus grins ear to ear, shaking Phisto's hand firmly. Marcus takes a look around as if to be sure no one was specifically eavesdropping that shouldn't be. He leans in a little closer to Phisto's ear and quietly begins his report.

'Well, not what I expected, but enough to feel the need to continue down this rabbit hole.' Marcus pulls out his personal holo and pulls up some images.

'Abandoned Stations have been found here, here, and here. This goes way back to the Formidine Rift data that was mined a few years back, and all the questions that remain unanswered. Nobody seems to have a hard and fast correlation yet between Merope and our new visitors and these set of events, but speculation is growing by the hour. Look at this as well...'

Marcus pulls up an image of Hawking's Gap, 'Not registered, but active. Now why would someone put a Coriolis out here next to this region, here, here, and adjacent to this one here-- (see PM Phisto) if there wasn't something else going on? And lastly...' Marcus scrolls across his galaxy map... 'These sites that have been discovered, data has been articulating there's a good chance our visitors in the Dark regions are not one in the same as the ones that left these artifacts behind... It's always bugged me, why have they been scanning us? What are they looking for? Then it hit me, maybe they're not looking for us at all. Maybe they're looking for what we're looking for... Follow me?'

Marcus looks to Phisto to see if he's gathering this information correctly. Sydney looks around the room as if on alert.

"Actually he meant Mhera, just a little while ago," Ten chimes in.

"Yeah, Nick's an interesting character. I don't trust him, but Ten seems to think he's all right, plus he's pretty decent with a rifle," Cartlidge added, accidentally making eye contact with the woman who was busy staring down everyone else at the bar.
01 Feb 2017, 3:26am
"She's probably run all the background checks on him that's why." Luke added with a sly grin, recalling how she'd rattled off his Pilots Federation details like they were in a school text book, "Haven't you Ten?"

He swigged his water again, still curbing the alcohol.

Phisto's face was stern, focused, his eyes mostly on Marcus as he spoke. They went back and forth between his friend and the middle distance, clearly trying to understand, but not without some difficulty. Whispering back at Marcus' volume, Phisto responded,

"I think so, Marcus.  At least, your conclusion feels sound, in so much that it stabs our natural hubris right in the throat," he grinned, "Makes it feel... true."

He turned to Syd for a moment, watching her eyes search the room, following her pattern.  He turned back to Marcus, "Please, continue.  This type of work is unfamiliar to me, and so, utterly fascinating."  He finished his current drink, and waved at the bartender for a new one.

Fumbling with the credit chit in the pocket of his fine silken robes, the good doctor Glaboski waltzed into the hazy bar. He took a quick look around gathering his bearings.

Good, the psycho isn't here...

He nodded to the two men and a woman at the counter talking and enjoying drinks. A scantly clad server girl walked past. He took a moment to enjoy the view before his eyes fell upon a trio of individuals at a table. The one was the "boyfriend" of the red headed woman he had expressed his desire to get to know earlier. Her refusal roused a great annoyance in the man.

How dare she....

He hitched on a kind face as he walked over to the group, pulling up a chair.

"Mind if I join your social gathering?" He asked.

(for clarification: Glaboski is requesting to join Luke's group.)

Eyeing the man as he approached, Luke recognised him from earlier.

"Uh... Sure..." He said tentatively, adding *Like you gave us a choice* in his head, before continuing, "To whom do we owe the pleasure?"
01 Feb 2017, 7:42pm
"I did," Ten replied, "but what Cartlidge is saying is that he gave us a very poor first impression, since he was hired to kill us both. It makes sense, since that is what he was typically hired to do, but I found some information that could be used as a psychological defense. After running some numbers I figured we would be untouchable once he was able to properly see our faces."

"I'm... not sure what she's talking about," Cartlidge added, "but she also made me fork over a million credits to help win him over, so he's basically a hireling."

As he finished talking, Cartlidge noticed someone walk over to their booth. Perhaps it was the alcohol in his system, but he looked awfully familiar. He was rather bad at memorizing faces, so he wouldn't have been surprised if he had never seen the man before in his life. "Acquaintance of yours, Luke?"

Ten looked up at the man and recognized him instantly, so she turned to Cartlidge and spoke. "He was the man who offered to dance with Mhera."
01 Feb 2017, 9:54pm
"Indeed I was. I apologize for my earlier departure." He said in a smooth tone."I didn't want you to think I was snitching your lover." He said to Luke. "Such terrible form that would be on my part. I wanted to make it up to you. Round of drinks, on me?" He offered as he waved down a server.

"Allow me to Introduce myself." He held out a well manicured and slender hand to Luke. "Ryan Jones, and I have to say, you have quite the taste in women, if you don't mind me saying so."

He turned his eyes towards Ten and Cartlidge and gave them a smile before offering his hand to them,
01 Feb 2017, 10:09pm
"No apology needed. You came over, tried your luck, you weren't to know any better." Luke said a bit dismissively, "If I wanted people to know anything about me and her I'd announce it to everyone within earshot."

He took Ryans hand and shook it, gripping it firmly but kindly.

"Name's Luke." He said, "And to be fair, compared to Lilith, the one you had your hands full with before, any girl is a catch." He added with a short chuckle.

"I'll let them introduce themselves." He motioned to Ten and Cartlidge.
01 Feb 2017, 10:23pm
Glaboski smiled as he he finished his order of drinks for the table. The waitress bustled off as he turned his attention back to Luke.

"I dare say, that I'm a pretty good judge of knowing who's open and who's not." He poured a measure of Achenar Blue into a shot glass and handed it to Luke. So when I say it was a mistake, I truly mean it." He poured another measure into a separate glass and handed that to Cartlidge.

"I have to say, that was quite an embarrassing display of emotions. Wanton.....but, it was what it was." Glaboski sighed as he measured out a shot for Ten. "She was quite touched in the head. Despicable behavior actually. But as with all mentally ill individuals, I won't hold it against her..."

He poured out the fourth glass and kept it for himself.

"So, Luke, tell me, what is it you do?"

Glaboski leaned on the counter taking an genuine interest in the man, with the practiced patience of a sociopath and pathological liar.
01 Feb 2017, 11:48pm
"I dunno if I'd say Mentally challenged. A handful... An angry handful at that, but not deranged." Luke replied, only half sympathetically, "I had the pleasure of her company previously..."

He pondered Ryans question for a moment, what did he do?

"Umm... Pilot... I guess..." He answered eventually, "I have a large fleet of vessels, each with more or less different purposes. Plus I'm fairly highly ranked in everything since I can't seem to stick to one job." Turning his arm to show his ranking badges to emphasise his point he took the shot and downed it in one, relishing the aftertaste that lingered for a moment.

"What about you?" He asked, more out of politeness than anything, "No offence, but anyone that hangs out with a Pirate Queen, usually turns out to be bad news in my experience."
02 Feb 2017, 3:25am
Dr. Glaboski listened and took a sip of his alcoholic beverage.

"I didn't say she was mentally challenged or deranged. I said she was mentally ill. Something that is quite a bit different from what you said. And in my professional opinion, she should be seeing a psychologist, or taking some form of medication.... But then I'm not her doctor so what do I know?"

Oh, how pedant. A pilot. What imagination. The doctor scoffed inwardly but kept his rapt attention and kind features.

"That's very interesting," he lied smoothly and with confidence. "to be out among the stars, dancing with them in their celestial waltz. It must be magnificent!"
He paused for a moment to let the dramatic set it. "To see the stars, and uncharted planets. To traverse that dark sea, and experience it's splendid riches. I could only imagine!"

He took another sip.

"Me. I'm just...what you would say a country doctor. I have an office out in the Pegasi region....Tis why I am acquainted with Marra Morgan. You see, out there, things are quite different. I pay her a percentage of my profits, to keep her....how should I say it, tax enforcers off my door step."

He paused again.

"It's really not that bad. Actually, it's a lot more simple then paying the Federation taxes, what with their obscenely complicated tax code. And don't get me started on the Empire with all those senators changing the rulings of their fiefdoms to bolster their public opinion. I pay a simple 15% tax to her. And unlike the Federation, she cares about the practice. If somebody is causing me trouble in the business sphere of things, she sends someone to sort it out. Unlike the Federation. They could care less, so long as your profits keep rolling in."

He smiled.

"True medicine is about helping mankind and furthering the knowledge base. You can't have that with entities like the Federation breathing down your neck, caring only about how much credit your bringing in. By proxy, Black Omega allows me to do what I love, and that in returns allows me to helps those in need in that particular region."
02 Feb 2017, 4:38am
Cartlidge silently listened as the two men spoke, eyeing the shot glass. He had already had too much to drink and it was only a matter of time before it became a problem. Still, it would have been rude to reject the offer, so he downed the glass.
"Interesting. What's the region like? I haven't quite been to the Pegasi systems, myself, though I've heard some... curious rumors."

Ten, on the other hand, reached out with her prosthetic arm to examine her glass, but did not drink. As always, she had difficulty bringing herself to ingest the stuff, knowing the potential damage it could do, especially to a mostly synthetic system like hers. Still silent, she looked back up at the doctor, still wondering about how his supposed doppelganger had worked here as a doctor as well.
02 Feb 2017, 2:57pm
"I'm not a Doctor of any sorts really, so I guess I wasn't aware there was a difference between deranged, challenged or ill." Luke responded, bristling slightly at what he felt was more of a jibe at his intelligence rather than about Liliths mental condition.

Listening in to Ryans poetic description of a CMDRs Life, he nodded along with it. It was true what the man was saying, hell, it was why he became a pilot in the first place. To not just hear about the wonders of space, but actually experience them himself.

"Well... I appreciate that a pilots life isn't for everyone but neither is the life of a Doctor. Even, ah... tax enforcers... Need medical care I suppose." Luke tipped his glass towards Dr Jones, by way of showing appreciation, "So for that, you have my thanks, your kind is always needed."

Turning to listen in to what Jacob said he looked towards Ryan to hear his response.

"Yeah, I've never been inside it myself but the Pegasi borders are ripe hunting grounds for bounties." He said matter of factly, "Apologies if I've sent a few too many patients your way."
