General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Marcus, being the candid asshole that he is, pretends not to hear Phisto.

'I'm sorry what were you saying?' He says sinisterly, smiling as he does. Before enough time can pass that Phisto might think he was serious, he slaps Phisto's shoulder as one might to another brother in arms.

'I have a sick sense of humor. It's a reflex when I get uncomfortable. Of course I'll hear it. I'm not exactly making a ton of friends out this way, so I appreciate the real ones I'm lucky enough to have close by.'

Marcus perks up as though he just forgot something.

'Though, this story sounds like it needs a drink... Or two...'

Marcus flags the server down quickly and orders a whole slew of cocktails.

'Just bring em over and keep them coming.' He nods at the bartender and gives him a cordial gesture of cheers, returning to Phisto afterwards.

'Lets hear it brother.'
03 Feb 2017, 3:05pm
Phisto watched the cocktails line up on the bar, "...or a half dozen?" He smiled, "Remind me to get you some of the stims I keep for situations such as this - get you right back to sober... or or least close enough, should you be needing to fly unexpectedly."

He looked at his feet for a moment, moving his toes around in his jet black, shiny shoes.

You can do this.

"He was my chief mechanic.  Name was Griggs.  We met in cadet school, not long after we learned to walk, it feels like.  Clan-mother said our personalities were... complimentary... so we were assigned to one another.  You see, we were born to what you might call a mercenary guild.  Though on our planet, there was more ceremony, more ritual to the whole affair than what you usually see in the galaxy.  So from birth, our leaders are figuring out where you're going to fit in the organization, what your station is going to be.  The side effect of this was matching folks together based on their personalities, their essence they called it."

Phisto paused for a moment, smiling at the memories.

"Romantic relationships were encouraged.  Good way to relieve stress and it sure as hell made you give a bigger shit about the folks you fought with.  Sure... there were issues, especially with causalities, but that was deemed an acceptable cost for the return on performance," he took a long draw on his drink, "Griggs was... everything I wasn't.  By graduation, I was one of the best pilots in the clan.  Said if they gave sainthood to killers, I'd be the patron of 'em, but it was really all I knew... or know.  Him, on the other hand, beyond being the best fucking mechanic I've ever known, knew art, culture, music."

Taking another drink, he continued, "And he taught all he could to me, and I to him."  Phisto looked at Marcus, trying to to gauge his thoughts.

Dr. Glaboski stroked his chin between his finger and thumb, thinking.

"Mmm, is that so. A fellow researcher. Well, I would love to meet with her and pick her brain a bit." He looked to Luke. "Professionally of course. For most scientists, talking shop can be quite exhilarating. Ah, the exchange of information." He rapped his fingers on the counter. "You never know. Scientific breakthroughs comes in all shapes and forms!" He said cheerfully.

He looked back to Ten.

"You seem a bit skiddish. Are you well?"
03 Feb 2017, 6:36pm
"Oh, yes I... I'm fine," Ten replied before withdrawing into herself once more.

"You'll have to forgive her, she's um," Cartlidge thought for a moment. "She's had some poor experiences with doctors in the past. Interestingly enough she's actually quite proficient in first aid."
03 Feb 2017, 8:05pm
"Well, believe me when I say this. There are crack-pot doctors out there." He said in a soothing tone.

"But don't you worry. I won't be practicing medicine here. Not a very sterile environment." He waved a server over and placed an order of appetizers for the table to share.

"I've noticed your eye. Progenative technology doesn't work for you?"
03 Feb 2017, 8:18pm
"Yeah, that's a good question actually..." Luke piped up, "I did wonder that myself."
04 Feb 2017, 4:09am
Cartlidge started to grin. "That's a bit of an interesting story. I had a bit of an accident during my early days as a pilot. I was flying an Asp Scout at the time when I got into a fight with a pirate Clipper. I had gotten a little cocky and thought I could handle it, and after a few rounds I had done a number on the ship, but not before I had lost my own shields and taken a little bit of damage, myself."

He leaned back to remember the event. "That's when thing's got ugly. In the chaos of the moment, we charged towards each other, and I failed to turn away in time. The pirate's port-side nacelle cut right through my canopy, sending a rather large shard of glass through my Remlock helmet and into my face."

Cartlidge marked the edges of his scar with his index finger and thumb, emphasizing where the shard had hit. "A moment later, I was ejected in an escape pod, which probably saved me, considering my helmet had been cracked open. It took a couple of hours but they were able to patch me up, though the station I ended up at for some reason figured a prosthetic was a better choice than a replacement. I could've gotten a new eye if I had wanted to, but I chose to stick with this one as a reminder of how easily a simple mistake can be lethal in the void. It took a long time and a lot of medication, but I got used to it, and I'll admit the device has its fair share of advantages."
04 Feb 2017, 8:14am
Marcus grows increasingly somber, sensing the emotion behind each of Phisto's carefully chosen words. He takes a slow sip of one of the drinks now mostly ignored on the table. He looks down at his glass.

This isn't going to end well... no mystery there...

Marcus looks back up at Phisto and feigns a smile.

'Most of our greatest teachers in life come from unexpected circumstance...'

He quiets, tentatively waiting for Phisto to continue.
04 Feb 2017, 2:25pm
Phisto nods appreciatively at Marcus, "That they do.  In some ways, circumstance is the best teacher we get."

And it's a right bastard at that.

He took another draw on his drink and continued, "As far as our situation, our clan I mean, life was becoming increasingly hostile... politically.  Traditionally, we had a sort of permanent neutrality among the other clans.  We fought for the highest bidder and got paid for it.  Nothing else really to it, but success breeds envy, and by the time Griggs and I had come along our role in society had been resented for quite a while."

"I won't bore you with the details, but some of the bigger clans banded together, launched an overwhelming surprise attack.  Killed many of my comrades in the initial assault.  In the confusion of the evacuation, Griggs and I found ourselves alone with two F63 Condors.  Griggs could fly of course, everyone could, but he never had the knack for combat."

Phisto stops, staring into his drink, his face and scalp visibly tenses, then relaxes.

You'll burn them all.  Don't worry.

"We made a run for it.  Ground fire shot him down.  No chute."

Excitement.  Fear.  An explosion. Loss.

Phisto reaches into his tuxedo jacket pocket and pulls out a small, die cast model.  It's rough, paint faded, with a light coat of rusting over most of it.  Tears start to well in his eyes as he hands it to Marcus.  It's a palm sized F63 Condor.

"Remember that person I was looking for, when we first met?  He was a merchant, and had one of these, nearly perfect condition.  I collect them to... help remember, to keep at least the memory safe."  Phisto set his drink down at the bar, and watched Marcus and the F63 toy.

"So, you see, I like you because we're both living in life's fallout."

"Ouch..." Luke replied sympathetically, "I'll keep my original thanks, I've had enough surgery to last me a lifetime as it is." He raised his glass by way of salute to Jacob, downing the rest of his water to dilute the Achenar Blue bought by Ryan.

"What about you Doc?" He asked politely, "Any stories of your own to tell? I notice you have a cane for one."
04 Feb 2017, 7:34pm
Dr. Glaboski smiled once again as he continued to stroke his chin. Then with a wave of his hand.

"Oh, nothing as compelling as that, to be sure." He said.

"Medical adventures, I have found, are quite dull to the layman." He placed his hand on the table. "So I won't bore you with them. As for my leg...."

He lifted the cane and scrutinized the ivory handle.

"I was born with a rare genetic disorder. My body rejected progenative technology. But I am very fortunate to be alive. People with this disease have less then a 5 percent chance of living past the age of 8."

"I think I'd surprise you but fair enough." Luke said, "I guess you're both lucky and unlucky then. Is that what pushed you into learning medicine then Doc?"

He signalled another waitress to get a glass of water for him.

"Just a precaution." He added quickly, realising Ryan had bought a bottle for the whole table, "I get a bit... well... I'd rather not be too drunk around strangers, put it that way."

*Not after last time especially* Replied his brain, Luke could only agree with that sentiment.
05 Feb 2017, 5:42am
Marcus reaches over and takes the model from Phisto, looking over its warn surface, instantly being able to identify the perfection in its aged exterior. Such a small object, such a simple notion, how many complex moments it must've gotten its caretaker through. Marcus nods as he looks the tiny toy over, then glances up to Phisto.

'Fallout is one way to put it... A reason to keep going another.' Marcus pauses for a moment as hesitation to continue stalls him from saying immediately what comes to mind.

'A while ago you mentioned you might need my help with something... Would this have anything to do with that request?'
05 Feb 2017, 12:17pm
Wiping his hand across his face, Phisto starts to regain his composure.

"In a dramatic turn of events, no, that's an entirely different train of thought. Sadly, I'm not ready to talk about that just yet," turning back to a fresh beverage, Phisto continues, "It's an idea that's just too young to give words and form to yet. Know what I mean?" Phisto cackles softly, "And besides, I'll need funding. Lots of it. But don't worry, you won't be left out."

Phisto stops for a moment, looks out around the crowd, and then turns back to Marcus, "So what's your reasons to keep going, Marcus?"
05 Feb 2017, 4:53pm
Dr. Glaboski considered Luke for a few moments.

"I didn't mean that as a slight, Luke. I've just found through experience that talking medice bores people to tears. It's the technical nature nature of the field."

He paused for a moment. I seriously doubt he would comprehend even a tenth of what I would say

"I can see your pretty smart. Perhaps another time. But to answer your question. Yes, one of a few forces that helped shape who I am today. What prompted you to take to the stars?" He said as he poured himself a glass of water.
