General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I could feel the shift in the room as the bar keep swooped in, i knew this was going to to be an issue but it was still worth it. This job would have to happen off planet if they wanted it to look like just another pirate attack. I could feel the warmth of the drink calling but i carefully slipped away from the bar before i drew to much attention and settled in where i could watch i knew this wouldn't take long.

"For who? . . Like - The Fatherhood". "There" She said.," Holding out a pad

It looked impressive enough.

I was about to say, 'Pay up and take the hit, it's not worth the trouble for 100k' A quick scan of the boards could throw up 45,000 a ton for an easy round trip. Bauxite out, niobium back. That's two and a half million, even in a Cobra. Then I remembered how tough it was to raise your first million. First find your Cobra, 350 thousand plus at least one rebuy.

"You need a partner. Someone you can trust to watch your ass."

The look of anger flaming in those dark eyes wiped away any picture of her ass that might have been forming in my mind. Heck I'm a guy, it's evolutionary! No sense in trying to deny it. Should choose my words more carefully.

Two drunks were weaving their way towards us.

Before she had time to answer, one of the drunks stumbled into the table. I grabbed my beer. Weeping Willow was too slow. Red wine everywhere. She stood up before it dripped into her lap. Second drunk stumbled into her.

Oh boy, amateur night. I stood up, taking off my retro HUD glasses.

"OK guys, no problem, let me get the door for you."

Held the door open, followed them out, watching as within a few paces they 'sobered up', laughing. Let the first one have it in the solar plexus, knocking the wind out of his lungs, kicked his feet from under him as he tried to breath. Slammed the second one face first into the wall, heard cartilage-cracking noises as his nose made contact. Held him there long enough to slip my hand inside his jacket, relieved him of a deceptively small biometric weapon. Expensive, custom built grip. In the hands of a skilled expert, would drop anything in sight. I slipped it into a padded pocket in my cargo pants.

Back in the bar the mess had been cleared away. Willow was hanging on to a fresh glass of red with both hands as if it would float away. Would have happened in the early days if a station stopped spinning. Everything not bolted down would keep on moving. I regained my seat and swallowed a mouthful of beer.

"As I was saying, you need a partner. Go back, hand over the 100k, pull the plug on their reactor on your way out. I'm guessing you didn't install a 'back door' so you can do that remotely." I paused.

"Alternatively, you could get yourself a . . . sponsor. Someone who could absorb your losses, deal with the problem in his own way, collect the collateral in his own time later."

That was close as I was going to get, short of making her an offer.

"Tell me about 'burt'." Knowing she would instinctively reach down and realise her weapon was gone. "They weren't drunks. Don't worry, I have it." Smiling.

As if it needed explaining.

So that went down and for some reason unknown to me, I stood there like a drip while Kax took care of everything. Also, my holster or pistol must be faulty and thats on me coz, like fixing things is my thing.

How the hell did some jurk exsert the like, 8500 Newtons it would take to overcome a contact maglock? Like, he should have ripped the damn thing off my suit right? My gauntlet supplying my palm print to my pistol along with the proximity circuit should make simply taking it, like impossible without hacking my tech.
Ok, so that makes the 20 years of living memory I have feel much less secure, and now I don't trust the safety on my weapons.

Yum Kax"Alternatively, you could get yourself a . . . sponsor. Someone who could absorb your losses, deal with the problem in his own way, collect the collateral in his own time later."

So wow, that quick huh? Like, I know he's trying to be nice, but I just left my family and two big brothers that are always just trying to be nice to little Wednesday. I'm out here to spread my wings, show what I can do, not hide in the shadow of some dude. I wanted some advice, not someone to do it for me.

Yum Kax"Tell me about 'burt'." Knowing she would instinctively reach down and realise her weapon was gone. "They weren't drunks. Don't worry, I have it."

I fail to hide a disappointed exhalation be fore speaking "So like, they can say I didn't do the job and thats my tough luck right? Pay them and get their hounds off my back. Ok, cosmic, I can deal with that and now I see why mom always paid for legal before taking a contract"

Look and Kaxs' smiling face while hes' holding my pistol. He seems like a decent guy, but that's not what I need right now. I got my pockets picked, and if this guy wasn't a decent guy, I could get killed with my own weapon.

"You know what? Keep Burt. If he's going to leave me just like that, I don't need him in my life" Take another sip of the wine and retrieve my toolbox from under the table "I was thinking of investing in a laser lobbing Lucy anyway" I say as I slide out from the booth and stand up.

"So like, thanks for the drink and insight I guess. I'll go pay off my so-called debt after selling the salvage. Gotta be a half sovs-worth in that at least right?" Take a look around the famous Galactic before I go.

"I'll swing by again soon Kax, thanks for the drinks" Give the guy a nod, and leave.

Leaning back I swigged a mouthful of beer. Sometimes people just need a nudge to work things out for themselves.

'now I see why mom always paid for legal before taking a contract'. She'd figured out that 'insurance' was an investment.

'I could get killed with my own weapon,' weapons were fallible and can't always be relied on.

Sit with your back to the wall so you can see that when one guy crashes into you as a distraction, there's another one ready to pick your pockets.

I hoped she would live long enough to 'swing by again', and that she had enough money in the bank to rebuy her hard-earned engineered ship when it was destoryed, as it surely would be at at least once.

It's been a while since I've been in a bar. Stepping over the threshold of this place, I heard a chorus of dozens of pilots, each of whom sang about their exploits or announced plans. I sat down at the bar and called the bartender over. He stopped rubbing the glasses with a snow-white napkin and came up to me.

"Achenar Blue. Undiluted", I said.
"Good choice, sir."

The bartender poured me a glass of whiskey and went on to rub the glasses.

I looked around. In one corner sat a beautiful girl with dark hair. She was sitting with her eyes closed, a cigarette in her hand was raising a thin column of ashy smoke. A man was sitting in the other corner, leaning back in his chair. Leaning back he swigged a mouthful of beer.
05 May 2022, 7:29am
A man appeared at the door. Clearly an oriental look, almond eyes.

"Ohayou! Pardon me for the intrusion. I present myself. I am CMDR Uramaki, I won't steal too much of your tiempo.
I will leave here some gal-flyer as I have opened a new galnet profilo. I am going to escribir my whole adventure in the logbooks, since the real beginning. Est possible que some of you may find this interesting."

People in the bar looked at him like a newly found (intelligent?) alien specie.

"If you feel aburridos, come visit my profile every now and then. It will keep you compagnie"

He then exaggeratedly bowed in front of the crowd, and silently left the bar.

Like I need a sit-down and a cold one.
I think as I walk into the Galactic again. Its only like, half a G, but if it means I can have a drink without having to suck it up a straw, then I'm down for centrifugal assistance.

“White wine please. Cold and sweet, big glass” I ask before looking around for faces I know.

After a glance around, I remember this isn’t like my usual bar and I know one and a half faces at best, and I met them once a few days ago.
06 May 2022, 6:31pm
Sitting quietly nursing my beer I reflected on my position. Grounded, temporarily, (who checks for current licences, no-one). Young pilots noisily letting off steam and enjoying some time off at the other end of the bar. A xeno-hunter taking some much needed R & R, with stresses of her own to mull over. New customers coming and going as always.

Young guy, in what sounded like a mixture of languages stood in the doorway loudly announcing himself.

Looking around, the bar seemed to shrink, looked tired and garish. I felt suddenly out of place. I'm not cut out to hang around places like this for long. Made up my mind top move on.

I was surprised to see Willow wander in again. Curiouser and curiouser.
06 May 2022, 8:10pm
That guy Kax was here again toying with a beer, and like he's the only person here that will chat, and like what's the point of coming to a social centre and not doing the social thing?
So I arm my self with an offering.
"Hay, could I get a beer too, please? The one that dude in the retro specs is threatening"

Keep the stem of my wineglass in my fingers and pick my way over to Kax holding the beer bottle by its neck.
"Like you .. or so hi I guess.. again. Is it ok if.." I say pointing at the seat "oh and like here" placing the beer down "Like returning the kindness or what ever"
08 May 2022, 11:56am
I realised she was making her way towards me. 'Damn she's impressive Young, full of life, fiercely independent, eyes ready to flash with anger. Why didn't I notice that the first time.'

"Sure, always room for another beer. Thank's." 'Hell, now I even sounded like one of those old guys that spend their days sitting in a bar, alone, nursing a beer.'

"Yep, I'm still here, same place, different beer. Feels like I've been here forever." I hadn't meant to add the last statement.

"So, while I've been sitting here thinking about life, you been out there living it. What's new in the big black empty?"

Listen this time Kax. She's here to unwind, unload and relax. Not listen to advice from an old man, and not to ask for help.

"Well like yeah that's why I'm here, thinking about life I mean"
Place the beer down in front of Kax and sit opposite, taking a generous mouthful of cool wine.

"So I've been putting my boots in the dust hard you know? Like stacking those numbers so I could upgrade my ship and now I got a diamondback" carry on talking so this guy doesn't think I'm looking for praise for spending credits.

"But ya know, that means I'm finding more. ." Falter as I try to find the right words while trying not to recall the details of the killing wounds I put in the two men at my last salvage work site ". . contested contracts. It's like I want to get the contract done, but no matter what I try to do, up pops some . . well . . someone wants to get in the way. Like, right in the way you know?

I'm kind of lost in what I'm trying to say, and now I'm just bouncing words off this man's face, getting nowhere in my head "How do I deal with that?" I say to my self as much as to the guy across the table.
08 May 2022, 1:50pm
'Think before you speak Kax. Was she asking, or just thinking out loud.'

"Yep, guess I do. Always some wise-guy think's he's better than you, want's what you got or just wants to get in your way."

" Fist-fight used to work for me. Tougher now I guess. Need something more. . . persuasive." Not wanting to suggest shooting first, asking questions after.

"Depends what line of work you're in too. Mostly was just flying for me. Buying, selling, delivering. Sometimes shooting.". 'Stop rambling.'

"We both know you're too hot-assed to ask for help." I smiled before she could rise to the bait. "But we all need back-up sometimes."
08 May 2022, 3:33pm
". . Hot assed? Is that like a badass? Well I'm, or like I haven't . . So I don't think that's me, at least I don't want it to be"
Having doubts in my head clashing with confusing observations from someone else isn't helping me sort out my problem.

"So anyway, like what's with the partner thing? LIke, I go sniffing around abandoned sites, stuffing my hold with abandoned booty. The pay is forgettable, it's like the salvage that makes the wad. Splitting that would make it . . Well help would be nice . . but like, splitting . ."
I'm in this bar to hear from a guy that's done it. Time for me to shut up and listen.

"So how does a partner help?"
08 May 2022, 6:23pm
'how does a partner help?.' Nearly made my heart bleed. What I heard was, 'let this old man ramble on a while.'

"Would that be a rhetorical question?" and before she could answer, "Makes no difference, I'm gonna say what I think anyway."

"When you find you just landed in a hornets nest, a partners the one who swats the insects while you run, and vice-versa. It's a reciprocal venture, not a business deal."

Swig beer and continue before she could stop me:

"A partner takes out the second guy while you're taking down the first one."

Hell, I needed that often enough.

"Course, when you leave here you're gonna carry on sniffing around dangerous places an' take on the world by yourself. That's what I mean by hot-assed."
08 May 2022, 6:43pm
"Oh right, I see . . well like, I think I do" So I am in the meat-grinder and if I don't step on the heads of the guys in there with me first, they will stamp me down.
Like, am I missing something? Take another deep pull of my wine while I think about it.

The man opposite me doesn't look like a psycho, so why is he like, ok with killing people? I mean, I'm into defending my self, but when did my side arm become as totally, important as my wrench?

"Like your saying . . getting . . or ok, like being targeted is normal so like, safety in numbers right? And how many like, man-hours would be right to apply against the profit margin is like pointless if you're dead?"
