General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

" being targeted is normal so like. . . the profit margin is like pointless if you're dead?"

I laughed out loud. Not just beautiful, smart too. And fast.

"You put it better than me." I tried not to laugh again. "Life and a second taste of the cherry is worth more than pride or profit."

Sometimes I even surprise myself! There's hope for me yet. Time to move on. My Cutter's still out there. Maybe not just yet

"Even the lowest scumbag deserves to live. Sometimes they leave you with no choice. Sometimes taking their knees out doesn't stop some people."

So get used to the gun because the galaxy lives on a trigger. Wow, bleak. I can't find a reason to laugh about it like Kax, but I guess I'm still new to this.
Like we left Earth because we fucked it up and now we want to spread our will to kill throughout the stars. Cosmic.

"Yeah ok, I guess. So I better get to the range and work on my aim" I say drinking from my glass, leaving enough wine for one more mouthful.

"So like, one more thing. Like this Farseer person contacted me offering specialized upgrades, and I was like all in for that you know? So she wanted some alien samples, so I went to what people call a barnacle to get some alloys"

"Do you know like, it was crawling. . or like hovering. . with those savage aliens that are attacking left and right. They had me alone and out numbered while I was there to . ." I hit this poor guy with actual air quotes ". .salvage, their stuff. Like they came to see what I was doing and then lost intrest. Is there anywhere left in the bubble where, like those little aliens, some shit-sticks won't ambush my ass the moment I show up?"

I had no immediate idea of where was safe or where it wasn't. There's a hell of a lot of space out there. You could fly for months and never see anther soul. Then get jumped on the way to dock at Jameson. Constant vigilance was the name of the game. Except it isn't a game.

"Whoa, take a step back. Shooting should be your last resort. Getting out your weapon might be the last thing you do. Ever." Remembering the occasions I encountered that too often myself.

"Much better not to put yourself in that situation in the first place. And if happens by accident, run!"

"Any time you kill someone, even the lowest shit-stick, you carry the guilt forever. You wouldn't want to make a habit of that." I needed to move on, not think about killing.

"As for the other thing. Places like Farseer, that would be Felicity, are targeted by the bad guy knowing there's a steady stream of easy targets going there to upgrade their ships. You just have to keep up to speed yourself. Safe places move around as much as the dangerous ones."

'So endeth the lesson'. I used to be an angry young man. Full of ambition, determination, energy. The stubborn hot-ass that insisted on doing it all for himself. .

"Oh I've like been to see Farseer . . seen the seer . . Like yeah, what ever. I had to weave and watch the lurkers, but I got in and out with only one tether, so like that's my point. We're arseholes right?"

Look at this guy for a moment while I align my thoughts.

"Like, I don't want to pick up a gun, but I have to because some crap-head is gonna come down to a facility in trouble, and take advantage of the work crew fixing what the dickhead raiders probably fucked up in the first place, ok?"
I can feel my self getting animated, moving my hands to emphasize my words. My eyes are not focused on anything as I chase this thread to its conclusion, wondering what I'm going to say next.

"And like, there's this lady that's all "Hay, I can improve your core systems in exchange for salvage" That's fair right, its nice and some freakish tards are all "Ha hahaaaa! I'm gonna sit here above Misses Claus workshop like a zit and pop my shit on the first weakling that comes along" but those alian things were just "Oh your here to steal our weird-ass fruit, like what ever, it literally grows on trees. Hay, thanks for not shooting us skinny human woman, goodbye now"
Pickup my glass and lean back in the seat.

"Woah! You like really cleared it up for me. Humans are dicks. It's like, maybe the aliens are on to something with all the attacks, right?" Drink the last mouthful of my wine. "Like, I'm not ready to be out here dealing with the crazies with a pilot's licence that treat it as, literally, a licence to kill. I'm like, an undertaker pretending to be a salvage engineer. Shit man, I need to like, think about my place in this fucked up civilization called humanity"
Stand up and dust my self down, feeling renewed somehow.

"No good getting older if you don't get wiser, right? You should like, call your self Guru Kax and charge people for enlightenment or what ever yeah? Thanks man, I got some thinking to do. See ya"
I have a drop-off to make, and a life to think about, and the drop-off has a good place to sit and think.
09 May 2022, 7:41pm
I sat back and tried to work out what just happened. I hadn't told her anything that she didn't know already.

She already knew that bad guys lurk around places like Farseer.

She already knew that the bad guys will see her working, collecting stuff, then jump her, so she has to deploy weapons.

She already knew that the aliens watched her collecting stuff and did nothing.

I think her conclusion was: The aliens had it right, the humans had it wrong.

If that's what she thought, then she had a fair point. We, the humans, came close to wiping each out on Earth. Now we seem intent not only to wipe ourselves out, but everything else we find out there along the way.

She already knew all that. She also seemed to leave more angry than ever. So what was making her angry. What was driving her. What was she looking for. What was her real question?

Maybe I had it wrong. Maybe her last remark was sarcastic, taking the piss. What the heck do I know?
11 May 2022, 10:52am
I put my back pack onto the counter taking a seat where the woman walked off from. "Whats her ale" I say turning my head back at her keeping my eyes on the guy that is now seated besides me. "What did u say to her to make a woman that mad"

I chuckle to myself as I raise my arm calling the bartender. "TENDER!. A Wine Please."
11 May 2022, 5:08pm
I heard the question. "What did u say to her to make a woman that mad"

It might have been better to ask, 'What did you say to that mad woman'. No chance to enjoy a quiet beer, even if that's what I might have wanted.

"Some people are just born angry, I guess." Turning to look in the direction of the voice.

When everyone else looks young is a pretty good sign that your getting old. When all the young women look attractive is probably a sign of something else. Something about this one looked a bit too perfect. Something I couldn't quite identify.

"One of my hidden talents, reminding people why they're angry in the first place." I grinned. "There should be a sign above the door. Price of admission, your mind.!"

I slam my hand on the counter hearing the phrase. "HAA!. Your'e mind..."

"So what will it be... An Old Sol or just a beer?" After recieving my drink I realized its red wine and that i never specified.

"Ugh Red wine... Uhm... tender u mind tossing this and handing me a glass of Moon.. Oh. And uhh.." I turn my head towards my "new friend"

"What are u having?"
11 May 2022, 6:15pm
...I've opened my eyes, emerging from my stream of thoughts, as I've heard that 'Price of admission joke', looked at the bartender and giggled. That joke was... Amusing. However, the price of spaceflight is often the same.

Then I looked at what's left of my cigarette, finished my already cold coffee and lit up another one. Hmmm... There's some new faces in that bar... Hm. That's what life looks like, I guess.

"Me? A beer is always welcome, as are new friends." No change there, apart from 'friend' that's an open question, but I have an open mind.

"Long trip?"

Something didn't feel quite right, was she a bit too relaxed? friendly? Bloody hell Kax, what are you tonight, some old wise guy, or some poor old drunk always up for an offer of free beer.
11 May 2022, 7:04pm
"And a beer for my friend here" I stretch out my arms and arch my back as i get comfortable on the bar stool.

"Long trip hmm.. Not sure what's considered a 'Long trip' these days but yeah. I guess.. I actualy just came from the CC Eri system..poor dolphins Drive nearly ripped itself apart."

I lean my head back turning towards him. "I F-Fixed IT! Tha names Kay-Lee-e or just Kay. Heh. U can call me Kay or Kaykay or Lee but no one calls me Lee howboutyou!?" I say energeticly without pause sounding like an exited little girl who just got her first ship.
11 May 2022, 7:26pm
"OK Lee!" Laughing at my own joke.

She's on something. I think. I wonder what.

"I guess that's quite a way to come just for a drink. This place used to be the best. Rusty now."

The longer I stayed, the more I noticed. Smokes in particular. If they weren't so profitable I'd ban 'em. The longer I stayed the more I realized I should leave, but just one more thing come along each time I decide to go. An here's a mystery. Kaylee.

"People call me Kax."
11 May 2022, 7:50pm
"KAXX!" I say loudly as i put my empty glass down hard. Staring staight towards the bottles behind the counter but not at it.

"Do u hear that. Static. Ann-noying!" I bang the left side of my eye with the palm of my hand. "Sorry i ramble sometimes its not me its..other things. TENDER!" I sit with my leg up on my stool with my knee against my chest.

I turn my head to Kax while resting my cheek on my knee "So what do u do for a living? U seem like someone with nothing that has him tied up...or down... I dont meet alot of people.. Am i rambling again.? Do they sell milk?"
11 May 2022, 8:13pm
She looked like she was posing for a picture. I think I might have been staring. I saw what it was now. You need new HUD glasses Kax. Her eyes, those tattoos, marks that reminded me of circuit boards. She's been repaired or enhanced, or both. I wonder what else is....

"I've retired, for now." No need to add grounded for health reasons.

"Did most things from time to time. Now I just sit back watching things go by." Getting itchy feet, I could have added ,just can't quite motivate myself.

"Waiting for something new to come along. Something to remind ,me where I left my cutter."
11 May 2022, 11:28pm
"Well why not go on a pirate hunt!? Theyre always soo mutch fun especially when it actualy turns out youre outmatched and got make the great escape haha.."

I sit and think i might be too sharing with people i just met. I mean whats life without abit of foolery especially if youre still young. "SOOO u ever killed someone for a dumb reason.? And thought...'DAMN i couldve avoided that' huh?"

Did i just ask that i should shut up." I should shut up." I say staring at Kax as he takes a sip of his beer.

" Am i new enough? Stop staring. Wheres that milk.? "

I lean over the counter waving at the bartender to hurry up and come to me but seems that his attention was by some lady.
I get of my stool walking over to the dark hair woman chatting with the bartender and stop facing her leaning foward with my legs crossed as if i have to pee. Putting my hands together and smilling.

"Heeeyy Llady. Could i pLease get the bartender for a moment." I shift my eyes over to the bartender. "Customer is waiting!" I start feeling hyper and i feel my left eye twitch. "Milk!...Please.?"
