Elite roleplay: The galactic bar

INGABA (Inara Galactic Bar)

Welcome to the swankiest bar and most popular bar on station. Located in the Pilot's market and due to its close proximity to the docks is heavily frequented by pilots and all manner of crew, tourists, and layover passengers. Dark, smokey and trimmed in neon lights and bits of tinsel, InGaBa plays only the best music straight from Radio Sidewinder and local DJ star, Janten Groove.

There are various tabled and seated cubby holes that patrons can hold private conversations as well the main bar top where all assortments of drinks and bar food can be ordered up. On the back of the bar on various shelves, from all over the galaxy, the fines and rarest ales preside. next to the impressive collection are several screens that can usually be seen playing adverts or the CQC championships.

It is the most prominent choice for meeting up with other pilots to discuss business discreetly, whatever they may be...

Notice booking the InGaBa for private functions require a deposit of 250,000 CR to cover potential damages.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Oh I get it" She sounded just like Descartes and Maul.

More importantly, Silvia sounded just like Willow did about 4 months ago. Opening and closing her own hand that had a bullet put through it, Willow remembered how it had felt mechanical after the nano-surgeons repaired the hole; and how close she was to having a cybernetic replacement.

"And like, I'm real glad to hear you have someone here, and family too. That's real important. Wish I'd remembered that before I put my problems in a box and left them on the edge of the galaxy"

She reached out and touched Silvia's cyber-arm "Don't worry about this. Like, almost everyone in my family have a cyber something and we don't even think about it. Salvage is real dangerous work"
15 Apr 2023, 7:02pm
'Haha this? Oh I'm not worried about this one. Had this for years. I merely forget it exists until i touch it and am surprised by how cold it is. Run in with a creature I was studying. Opened the cage and at first it was friendly, until it wasn't. Tore my shoulder out and bolted off into the distance.'

Silvia lets out a little chuckle thinking about how dumb she was for trying to pet a caged creature.

'You'd think Xenobiology would be safe...... well safeish.'

Silvia takes a seat next to Willow.

'So you too huh? Damn. This galaxy and the people in it are some right messed up folk. It's strange I haven't even talked to my family since the incident. And Julia. Well that's interesting, she was one of the ones who ambushed me. Found out later though that she had been used for her position as system security in Amenta. Poor girl. They messed her up really badly. Cut off her arm, it was already cybernetic but she had one of the really fancy ones that allow you to feel like a real arm. Broke her leg, shot her, and beat her just because she was protecting me.'

Silvia brushes the hair out of her face and touches the stitching on her face. The wound travels from the right corner of her mouth to just under the outside corner of her right eye. She lets out a shallow sigh.

'Doctors say I might lose my eye. That is something I don't know if I'll get used to.'
15 Apr 2023, 7:42pm
"Messed up? That's like, the biggest understatement ever right? Like, every one wants stuff, that don't mean you have to take it off people that like, work for it" said Willow throwing her hand up as if the was sick of explaining the obvious for the hundredth time.

"But what ever, once you know, you set about kitting up for it. The hard part is not becoming bitter and trigger-happy, I guess. And hey, eyes are easy you know" said Willow, getting close to Silvia's face so she could take a good look at the damaged orb.

She was about to put her hands on the woman's face so she could push her eyelids out the way and have a good look, but then she remembered not to examine living people the way she did a cadaver.

"Oh like, um, sorry. I'm a mortician as well, so when I see damage, I can help thinking about.. Um anyway, so you're like a Xenobiologist huh. That's got to be real interesting, and dangerous" she said cheerfully trying to change the subject.
15 Apr 2023, 8:23pm
'Believe me I get it. You'd be surprised at how many times our field bases get raided. I took up CQC training in the event I needed to defend myself.'

Silvia flinches away as Willow moved in closer. She prepares herself for anything but relaxes when she hears Willow explain her actions.

'That is quite alright. I recently did something very similar to a patron. She has horns! I couldn't help but touch them to ensure if they were real or not. They were indeed real horns.'

'Xenobiology has its times. It can in its own right be horrendously boring. I once spent 6 day....... was it 6? yes 6 trying to find a particularly rare species of plant. I fell asleep several times inside my Scarab while driving around. Yes there are times when it is dangerous. Like for instance my shoulder. I learned not to try and keep a wild Fox like creature as a pet.'

In an attempt to cure Willows curiosity Silvia pulls out her data pad and flips through her photos to find the Xray images of her face and orbital socket. The XRAY shows a shard of fused glass and metal lodged in the bone.

'Doctors won't touch it because "if it shifts my eye will go with it".... i suppose I got lucky the chunk wasn't any larger else we might have met in much different circumstances.'
15 Apr 2023, 9:15pm
"So you're telling me you met a horny woman in a bar?" she answered, blushing a little. "Like, not that weird, if you ask me"

Jokes like that were not normal for Willow, and she automatically pulled back for crossing that line.

"Um yeah so, like, if you were a droid, I'd have that socket cleared, and a new eye installed in about an hour. But don't worry, my sister Hazel had a lifting cable snap and lodge its self in her face. So, it was only a month after, when the scars had been treated, that I couldn't tell what eye had been replaced"

After looking around to see if anyone else was going to come over to the bar, Willow felt the need to fill the silence.

"And if you can spring for nano-surgeons, they may be able to clean your socket, and you won't have to get a replacement eye"
15 Apr 2023, 9:36pm
Willow Thorn"So you're telling me you met a horny woman in a bar?" she answered, blushing a little. "Like, not that weird, if you ask me"

'If only it were that easy.'

Silvia fires back almost instinctively. This kind of banter was something she missed from her months long expeditions into the void. She looks around and shakes her head.

'It wasn't too long ago one could come into the bar and find it full of commanders.'

She places the data pad back into its pouch and leans back forgetting there is absolutely no back support on her seat. Silvia falls backwards landing on her back with a solid thud. She can do nothing but make light of her demise.

'Huh this is a different view of the bar and its guests that I certainly did not expect to see.'

"Ohh Kaay, you need to lay off your own supply " said Willow, helping Silvia back to her feet with a few straining noises. "But like, it's good to see you enjoying your self"

The glass of wine looked good, and Willow hadn't had a drink since before the event. Putting the glass to her lips, she drained it.

The wine, and the spinning ring were working their destabilizing magic on her, and Willow decided it was time to move to a more stationary section of the station before she too had a change of perspective.

"Yeah so, I think that's me, you know? I need some food and a room that isn't literally spinning" she said walking over to her tool box.

There was a soft sound as her biometrics turned off the magnetic lock that held the portable chest to the floor, and Willow lifted it with a little discomfort.

"Like, I guess I'll be back tomorrow after job hunting. Maybe see you around Silvia, take care"
15 Apr 2023, 11:58pm
'If only I could say I was a little tipsy. A single blue lagoon is not nearly enough for me to get even lightly buzzed. No I simply mistook my seat for something with a bit of support.'

As Silvia is brought back to her feet she brushes herself off.

'Thank you. Take it easy on yourself I know when someone is in pain.'

She motions to Willows hand. She watches carefully as Willow departs waiving goodbye to a new friend.

'Take Care Willow. I hope to see you again soon.'

Silvia returns to her spot behind the bar and proceeds to clean the wine glass. She pauses only briefly before placing the glass back precisely where she had removed it from.

*skips back in*

HI!

Sauberaugen was dull.... *nod nod* I flew there, had the sidey sent over and waited... waited... BORINGGGG!
So I had the Emergence flown over and practised some Flight Assist off "hooning" ?

Then I took some missions just to break the wait. Weird, there were pirates and then there was one non-pirate Furrylance in every group. So.... I kind of have a 300k bounty on my noggin now. It's a reflex trained near engineers. But I have this! *drops a chunk of mangled metal on the bar*. That's a corvette after it's bean eagled. =)

Anyway... waiting... not my strong point. But the "Anomaly" is now there and still waiting to get Salivation removed from my plasma blaster.

I'd like more of that drink I had last time =)
*sits, unrolls an old map and starts studying it*
16 Apr 2023, 4:20pm
'Ah hello again Eli. Certainly and this one is on the house.'

Silvia grabs a glass and prepares the drink. She reaches for the vodka and stops.

'Excuse me miss. I didn't ask before but do you prefer non alcoholic or are standard cocktails alright with you?'
16 Apr 2023, 5:42pm
Oh... eh... no thank you. That ethanol doesn't do well with me. I always wake up somewhere else. *nod nod*

Anything fun happened?
I found another one of those floating strutures. *points at the map (that only bears a vague resemblance to how the galaxy is usually depicted)* there!
Spent some time flying through it, practising...

... is that some colour on your cheeks?
17 Apr 2023, 2:56am
'Very well.'

Silvia places the vodka back and hands the finished drink over to Eli.

'Fun? I mean if you call falling backwards off a stool fun then sure. Had a pleasant conversation with a guest about my recent past.'

Silvia pulls out a small pocket mirror and checks her reflection.

'Color? In my cheeks? I would certainly hope so. Better than being pale as a ghost. Or is the gash on my face bleeding?'

She looks around the bar briefly as she places the mirror back into a pouch.

'Where is lord Goodness? Wasn't he with you?'

Falling off a chair can be hilarious... or the result of something hilarious *nod nod*

No, I meant just a healthy blush =)
I have no idea where Mr. Goodness is. We were supposed to meet up at Sauberaugen *nod nod* But it's possible I misunderstood. That's normal.
Pretty looking looking glass!
17 Apr 2023, 9:10am
'Very well. I'm sure he's fine. Seemed like a capable lad.'

Silvia tilts her head at the rudimentary galaxy map.

'You mentioned a floating structure and is that a hand drawn galactic map?'
17 Apr 2023, 11:30am
It's easy to miss something in space. there's a whole lot of nothing inbetween the somethings. He'll be fine.

Hmhmm *nod nod*. It's been in the family for generations. Each carrier adds to it and eventually passes it on to a youngling. I got it from my dad.

I like paper =) It even retains its information after the lights go off. *holds it up so you can see*

Some stars have "BORING!" written next to them and some are marked with a tree icon. The spot that corresponds with Sagittarius A* has the text "I can see my own tail!". The rim is marked with a red line and outside it the text "Here be dragons".
Everything seems relative to a number of stars that have varying length dash dashed lines marked next to them.

Those are... lighthouses... umm.... pulsars, yep. *nod*
