General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Yeah I can see where your comin from Transil, but ya see, the whole system used to support it's self, but the dang bugs bombed the shit out of everything, so now it's every station or settlement for its self" started Damran, before Ephrain butted in.

"And now the management, knowing full-well the pilots will only keep coming in if the price is right, are trying to save a few creds here and there. Right now a lot of pilots are being tempted away to earn greater rewards helping Goid-Busters make new toys" He was talking to the table, but Ephrain still had his eyes on his holo-pad.

"So they have decided to see how far they can push us, the lowly worker, until we start quitting. Once they know where the line is, they will level out. It's normal corporate work-force manipulation" he said, know-it-allness dripping from his words.

She wanted to say something clever about what Citi was trying, but Ephrain would just shoot her down and enjoy telling everyone why she was wrong, so instead she shot for funny, with a hint of truth.

"So like, should we hold our own Gala Ball and go for equitable treatment for, workers like us" said Willow parroting Zachary Rackham's ‘Just Like Me’ slogan.

"I mean if good old Zack can get the rich and aimless to pony up for his, the promises I'll be braking, campaign, we should be able to swing a few credits for better meals and a bit more downtime. I mean like, come on? All the shit going down all over the place, and that rich dick wants more creds to make commercials about how great he thinks he is? Whatever"

Stuffing a slice of reconstituted meat product into her mouth, Willow looked around the bar. By the windows overlooking the dock, she saw the woman she had tried to help out the other night. Remembering the crappy attempt at playing white knight, Willow quickly looked away and pretended her plate really needed her full concentration.

I’d gotten curious about the exchange from overhearing it in my corner, and had started paying attention to it more closely, rather than the activity outside.

I wasn’t able to tell if the group noticed that I was, or they didn’t care if they had - I couldn’t say. And while the one person that I did have an interest in a conversation with was there, it felt beyond my courage with strangers to go up to them and ask. So I stayed in my corner and continued to watch silently, carefully observing for any signs toward me.
03 May 2023, 12:26am
As I continued watching, I couldn’t help but think that something had disturbed the woman. Did she notice me when I still had my back turned? I could only wonder.

My heartbeat increased its pace as I started considering whether to get over my awkward, antisocial nature, but something inside me felt too reluctant to try an approach with the three men present. Did I want them to know? They seemed like a team.

I looked around the room awkwardly, trying to pretend that I wasn’t repeatedly gazing at her.

"That is an over simplification, but yes the optics look bad. But that is the sort of popularity contest those people enjoy" Said Ephrain finding a way to condescend.

"It's a joke" chimed in Mark "Basing who they want in charge of humanity origins on who has the quippyest retorts. It's shameful"

Glancing up from his pad to level a raised eyebrow at Mark, Ephrain had something else to say, as he always did.

"Given you don't have a vote, it's small wonder that you would take that point of view, missing the point entirely. Government are just management companies that have worked out how to monetize their populations. Having a so-called vote for who is taking your money, is simply an illusion of choice to appease the masses. Until there is an IQ test, and gauge of political awareness on who gets a vote, it's pointless anyway. The ignorant far out weigh the educated, and they will always vote for who has the shiny smile"

Damran pushed him self away from the table a little. How did it always get to politics? That and ideology were guaranteed to break up a team. Some one else was taking a keen intrest in the discourse, and Damran, being a direct kind of guy looking for something to lighten the mood took the life-line.

"Well hay li'ddel lady, you want in on this here mess?" he asked shouting over to Kira as he bounced his great bulk over to make space for another chair.

"Maybe you could lighten the damn mood of m'ah debate team. Coz I sure as shit lost control of the situation real fast"

Silvia walks in a little uneasy looking. Her face was a bit pale. She takes a look around seeing who all was around. Near the middle of the room she saw willow and a group of the men chatting about something. At the stage was Creamy playing the piano once again. As she makes her way to a seat next to the stage she waves in Willows direction.

'Hello Willow. Good to see you again.'

As she takes her seat she notices a woman sitting in the shadows. She smiles at her and offers a welcoming wave. She turns her attention to the musician her look of worry melts as she sees the welcoming face.

'How are you doing this fine evening Sir Goodness?'

"Maybe you could lighten the damn mood of m'ah debate team. Coz I sure as shit lost control of the situation real fast"

The large man evidently sought to get me involved, judging by how he called out to me directly, and made some space for another chair to join in. I took a few nervous and careful steps forward, trying to keep my view from focusing on the woman with the black hair, but didn’t sit down. And I also tried to hide the slight tremble that I felt in me, probably in vain, speaking up.

“Well, uh, if you ask me, about 90% of politicians are just idiots worth laughing at. I mean, just look at those clowns in the Empire. They thought the best idea in the face of an alien horde that we royally pissed off was to isolate from everyone else and claim that ‘Imperial supremacy’ would save the day.”

I stopped. This didn’t feel like the right thing to say, but I couldn’t come up with something appropriate or witty to say either.

“Uh, nevermind. Maybe one of you, like, er… wants something? I’m really not much of a bar type myself, but the Pilot’s Federation throws more money at me than I know what to do with, and I hear drinks tend to lighten things up. Or something.”

‘I hope’, I added in my thoughts, as I showed a credit chip in my right hand. Another woman had walked in, to greet the individuals present that she knew - not that I did. I waited to see what she’d do.

(Edit : I have no idea why this was double posted)

'How are you doing this fine evening Sir Goodness?'

"Silvia" called Creamy in sing-song voice as he played a few bar from Return of the Space Cowboy for Silvia.

The electro-Funk vibe caused Creamy to seated-dance as he talked.

"Oh you know me. A little song, a little dance. Filling the atmosphere with romance" He smiled his flirtatious smile, but looking over to the table with the station workers dulled it a bit.

"Security tells me there was a little action here while I was away. Apparently, you had a chap fight for your honour! All resolved now?"

Mark put his cutlery down and, obviously controlling his temper said a part of what was on his mind.

"Did you consider that people of the Empire are fed up of being labelled, evil by everyone else in the galaxy because thay don't bother to understand our social security? That could be why we have become gun shy around people like you"

"You know, if your people were attacked by everyone else after chasing terrorists that had killed thousands, and then the killers found protection, and sympathy under the mafia that had in fact helped in the cowardly attack, maybe you too would understand why the Empire can only rely on its own for safety"

It was pointless explaining to a stranger, but Ephrain had been poking him for days now, then this woman comes along and put the boot in at the wrong time.

Ephrain laughed a crewel laugh at Marks discomfort and looked at the woman standing by the table.

"Oh dear, it looks like you upset our forced labourer, and then boasted about how much money you are getting for being a pilot. And we happened to be talking about how Citi management are screwing us over so they can carry on paying pilots top rates for basic supplies"

Ephrain put his nose back in his pad.

"I could almost believe you are deliberately trying to say the wrong thing?"

Damran couldn't believe it! Maybe that thing about the pretty ones being dumb was true, and Ephrain had just outed Mark as a slave. What he had hoped would be a help, just made things much worse. Then he heard the piano guy playing.

"Hey, Mr. Music! You know what Memphis is? Play something with a li'del heart will ya? Shit"

"Excuse me a moment" said Creamy to Silvia, pointing at the lit Requests Accepted sign above the piano.

He didn't know what Memphis was, but Niniette would. Quickly, his PA program put a few tunes and songs about Memphis on the piano's holo-music stand.

There was one about a chap with ostentatious shoes traveling to Memphis by air, then levitating around some fields. It was a piano heavy number, and it looked like he'd really be able you let loose with his voice. After fiddling whit the mixer deck and Auto-Band, he started playing. He nodded towards the rest of the instruments in case Silvia could play as well as she could sing.

It was a good track, he just hoped it would please the patrons. Especially the big one that looked like he really needed a social life-raft right now.

"I could almost believe you are deliberately trying to say the wrong thing?"

I balled my right hand into a fist and slammed it into the table, hard enough to rock the data pad upward.

“Listen up, smarthat. I’m not good with people, but I offered to buy you all something, not to flaunt all this idiotic money I have. I’d give most of it away in a heartbeat if I had the chance. Don’t think you know me for a second just because I brought that up.”

I looked at the other man that I’d upset unintentionally. “As to you… I’m going to be very clear on this - I hate the Feds just as much as I have an issue with the Empire right now. How many stupid things has that idiot Hudson done since he became the president? He’s no better than the Emperor, even if in different ways.”

I turned back to the rude man who kept his nose on the pad, and felt strongly tempted to pull it out from under it, to toss it into a corner.

“Your ‘indentured servant’ is something I could buy from right under your nose in a second, set him free, AND offer him better pay than this screwover job would. Hell, I could do it for all four of you, or buy you a decent meal, room and whatever else you could want on this station, and would have little issues with it. But instead, I get snarky remarks and insults in return for daring to be even slightly generous.”

I pushed myself off the table, shaking my head.

Thanks for assuming that I’m a profiteering, uncaring idiot like nearly every other pilot out there. Because that’s just how you make nice with people. Just because I might look good, doesn’t mean I don’t have two braincells to put together, and listen at the same time as having thoughts of my own.”

I took a step back and crossed my arms, containing the fury again. If there was one thing I hated, it was being wrongly accused of things without the person knowing me.

“Now that I’m done being angry, can we just be polite with each other? I didn’t come here to shout at people.”

I threw a hinting glance at the woman with the black hair, who still had her gaze fixated on the plate of food.

The smile Ephrain gave the Kira was as sweet as a crocodiles.

"He's not mine to sell, and I'm sure Mark has a thing or two to say about being talked of as a commodity to be bought and sold by anyone passing by with a few credits on their hip"

Still smiling, Ephrain shook his head in disappointment at the state of humanity.

"Here you are shouting about how offensive it is to pass judgments, after passing judgments and laying down the law as you see it. All you have done is highlight your level of ignorance"

"And I am free thank you very much" said Mark bristling, working hard to keep himself under control. "My wife and I chose to put our selves under contract so we could afford send our children to Colonia. Some where safe away from the Thargoids, and away from people like you that don't understand what they are talking about before they open their mouths"

Damran stood up, this was his fault and he had to solve it before he got his team in trouble with the station.

"Hey now, I shouldn't have involved you in this dog fight, an'I'm sorry. How bout you go back to doing your thing, and we'll quietly finish our meal then leave, alright?"

"Here you are shouting about how offensive it is to pass judgments, after passing judgments and laying down the law as you see it. All you have done is highlight your level of ignorance"

"Too bad it got there because you decided to call him a forced laborer, not a willing servant. Or assumed that I saw it as a business transaction. You think I'd care if it wasn't for the person?" I shook my head. "You're the one wasting my time, and you're being an ass by looking at your pad while talking to people. But I guess you don't care. Or you'd have stopped being an insulting ..."

I stopped myself, and turned to the other person, who I did feel genuinely sorry for.

"You are right, I shouldn't have assumed, and I'm sorry that your family's going through this because of the Thargoids. Too bad that bastard Salvation decided we all had to participate in his idiotic crusade to wipe out a species a thousand times more advanced than us. Could've spared us a lot of trouble, and this here occurring, if he hadn't."

I decided not to bring up the subject of the debt that likely resulted in that situation, and turned to who I presumed to be the team's leader.

"I'll talk to you or her if you're willing, but only alone. Take that as you will."

I turned away from the table and returned to my corner, pretending to not notice the credit chip that I 'forgot' in the dent that my fist had left. It contained a few million credits.
03 May 2023, 3:37pm
I decided to walk over to the man by the piano after a few minutes, bothered by the fact that I couldn't seem to have any kind of proper conversation with anybody, and it felt like I was the one at fault every time. Or maybe I simply wanted someone to speak to, and wasn't already in a mood.

"Hey, uh... I hope I didn't cause any unwanted trouble over there.", I said, glancing over to the station workers while keeping my voice low. "Feels like I keep screwing up social stuff every time I try ..."

I stopped talking, not really sure if the man cared, or caught any of the finer details of it over playing the piano.

"~Delta-blues, in the middle of the poring raaain~" sang Creamy coming to the end of what he felt like was a good song.

"Ha! Feel like you can't do right for doing wrong ya?" he asked leaning away from the mic as he finished the rather good piano sign-off the song called for.

"Do you know, I had about a year of that m'self. Every time one attempted to do something nice, it upset people. Couldn't even pay a complement with out being a monster, apparently"

"I wouldn't worry about that lot. Citi is in a bad way, and the station higher-ups are working everyone ragged trying to get it back up and running. Three fourteen hour shifts, and a cut to your dining privileges will put anyone in a bad mood"

"Still, to be graced by the company for a beautiful young lady is always welcome. The names Creamy; barman, mixologist and entertainer at your service"
