General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Still, to be graced by the company for a beautiful young lady is always welcome. The names Creamy; barman, mixologist and entertainer at your service"

“Kira.”, I replied. “Only name you really need for me. No family worth speaking of. Alive, anyway. Not sure I really miss ‘em, so I don’t mind speaking of it.”

I quickly added to that.

“Uh, I mean, I just never had any close personal connections in it. Of course I’d rather they be alive. Anyway… you might’ve seen me on that couch ahead like a day ago. Kinda ended up there after a not-so-successful introduction to… uh…”

I glanced over at the other woman with the black hair, not without a certain regret.
03 May 2023, 5:06pm
"Kira" said Creamy as if tasting the name the way a wine taster would sample an offered vintage.

"Oh yes, I can see that on you. It sounds familiar yet exotic; as if you could be from anywhere, even when at home"

"Love a K-name on a girl" he said absently as he was trying to work out who Kira was talking about.

"Hm, saw you on the sofa having a bit of a nap. Crashed out there a few times m'self don'cha know? You had a heavy 'leave me alone' aura about you; and as violence against the staff is very common here, we tend to respect people's space"he said, still trying to work out who Kira may have been referring to.

"Listen, are you talking about someone at that table you went and sh.. talked with?"
03 May 2023, 5:27pm
“‘Leave me alone’ describes me in that moment well. Didn’t much feel like talking to anyone there. Or looking at the world around me. One of those moments… not drunk, though. Don’t drink, nothing of that kind, at least. At most, I’d have made a noise and lifted an arm to say that I didn’t want to be bothered.”

I paused for a second to gather my thoughts.

“As to the person that I, uh… ‘met’ is a strong word. It’s the woman with the black hair on that table…” I felt a little embarrassed at not knowing her name. “… she kinda like, tried to help me with a guy bothering me when I told him I wasn’t interested. Had something shady to him. Anyway, it, uh, turned sideways a bit quick. I think we were both a bit too shy for that kind of direct approach.”

That was as precise as I wanted to get about that particular moment.

“So, uh, yeah… been meaning to like, talk to her about that, but… me and social courage, usually don’t get along well. Or you get a mess like the one you just witnessed. If you did. Anyway, I feel like I screwed that up as much as now and I’m not sure what she thinks. That part bothers me the most, really. Not knowing …”

I fell silent, feeling that it was getting a little too personal, for someone that I just happened to speak to in the moment.

Creamy Goodness III"Security tells me there was a little action here while I was away. Apparently, you had a chap fight for your honour! All resolved now?"

'I can't say that it is to be honest with you. Seems a demon from my past has come back for blood.'

Silvia sighs. She turns as the large man sitting with Willow and the 2 othe men somewhat rudely requests a song. Silvia looks at the other instruments on the stage and chooses the drums to help keep tempo. She keeps perfect tempo allowing Creamy to pace himself accordingly and let's herself flow with the music.

'Jules and the man fighting for me are out looking for the man. I had thought to join them but the dark memories from the place were entirely too much.'

She listens to the rabble about politics and determines the groups needs a saving grace else this could turn sour. She looks at Creamy who is plucking away at the piano keys and stands from her chair. She walks over to the group and places a hand on Damrans shoulder.

'How about something more lighthearted eh? Politics and bars tend to not mix well. My names Silvia Sharpe formerly Duval. My wife was an Imperial so i can understand how you would all be offended by that statement. I was born federation but quickly turned independent and choose to support none of the super powers since in my mind they are all self righteuos jerk offs.'

She looks at the people around the table and notices the one man still with his face shoved into his data pad. She walks over to him and gently removes the tablet from his hands.

'As for you. You are in a social setting seemingly with colleagues the least you could do is seem interested.'

She hands the tablet to Damran as she walks over to Willow.

'Here sir you should hold onto this. You seem to be the man in charge and from my experience things like this will not help with team building. You can return it if you'd like but I don't think it will help you.'

She grabs a seat next to Willow and places an elbow on the table and places her cheek on her hand. Her look softens a fair amount seeing how tense Willow seems.

'Hey you haven't said a word since I've shown up. Are you doing alright dear?'

Silvia glances over the table to Kiri. The same soft look on her face as with Willow.

'Do be cautious when speaking with imperials about such matters they tend to get a bit heated about these kinds of things. They pride themselves on their status..... almost too much.'

She takes a deep breath and waits to see the reactions of everyone to the assertive behavior she just displayed. She knew that it may not be taken lightly but she had to do something to try and save the situation.

'I have an idea. Creamy set the stage for karaoke. Let's break these folks out of their funk.'
03 May 2023, 6:00pm
Creamy slowly turned his head back to Kira, a smile straining to keep a little laughter at bay pulled at his cheeks.

"Your strategy to get to know the young lady, was to shout at her friends?" asked Creamy letting his smile broaden. "Unique, Kira. Bold. Memorable. Oh, she won't forget you" said Creamy rather enjoying the tease.

He looked at the women again, appeasing Kira's choice. "Oh yes. I say, ding-dong! Always liked that look m'self. Little young I think, but It's hard to tell these days; she could be older than my mother. Don't think so, she's got that air of drifting people lose as they age. Hm"

Giving his attention back to Kira, Creamy gave her a sympathetic look. "You know, you're in luck. I was going to ask my duet partner here to introduce me to your raven-haired stranger later" said Creamy nodding a shallow bow to Silvia. "Saw her wave to the girl when Silvia came in don'cha know? Perhaps you ladies would like to talk about our shy guest?" said Creamy in way of introducing Silvia to Kira.

'Do be cautious when speaking with imperials about such matters they tend to get a bit heated about these kinds of things. They pride themselves on their status..... almost too much.'

“My wording would have been different if I’d known they were.”, I replied. “Though I have to admit… I may have a liking to knocking people off their high horse. There’s a reason why Imperials and me in the same room usually don’t mix, unless they no longer are. Or why the only one I ever got along with was Aisling.”

I sighed.

“Needless to say, I still don’t enjoy being treated like an idiot because I’m a pilot. Independent, mind you. It’s not my fault the system is the way that it is.”

I paused for a second, looking at the woman.

“Also, uh… I’m going to politely refrain from anything that involves a dance floor, if you don’t mind. You do not want to see that.”

"Your strategy to get to know the young lady, was to shout at her friends?"

“That… no, that wasn’t part of the plan. Not in the slightest. I don’t think there ever was a plan to begin with, to be honest.”, I chose to reply.

“As I said, this technically wasn’t the first time. Only that first time lasted less than half a minute.”

I looked at the woman called Silvia.

“Uh… hi.”

My gaze went back to Creamy, and I lowered my voice a little.

“No offense, but I think you missed that part where she broke up our… uh, catfight, let’s call it. Good playing the piano, though. Anyway…” I stopped speaking quietly. “I can’t say I noticed her waving, though.”
03 May 2023, 6:42pm
That was the last straw for Mark. He was fed up with being used as a token for other people to judge their morality by, and he left without finishing his meal. With a heavy sigh, Damran handed the expensive holo-slate back to Ephrain, and followed Mark out. Ephrain closed his slate and stood, slow-clapping the people on the stage.

"Well done. Excellent service; and first-class self-importance, I'll leave you a great review" he lied "The song on the other hand, that was good. Surprisingly"

Ephrain left with his nose in the air instead of his pad. Even his compliment sounded sarcastic.
03 May 2023, 7:59pm
Like, a lot had gone down, one after the other before Willow could say a word. She was about to say something to the woman from the other night, when it came out Mark was a slave, and like, that knocked her back, but explained so much.

Then there was the thing with Ephrain, he didn't know when to let it alone just to keep the peace. Then Silvia came over and treated the team like children, and that instantly pissed them all off. Willow had grown up around working men, and knew you didn't ever treat them like that, even when they were acting like shits. To make guys like them quietly walk away was real bad.

All the crews had a lot on their plate, and they didn't need people in a bar telling them off when they were unwinding. By the standards of what she knew about this place, some guys having a disagreement over dinner was real low on the Richter scale. It could get real spicy in here. Using the last of her kind-of-meat product to mop up the extract, Willow finished her dinner and stacked the plates ignoring the cred-chip on the table, just like the rest of her team had.

After cleaning up a little, Willow stood up and kind of waved to Silvia.

"So, eh, hi again. Like I better catch up with the guys you know, gotta show team spirit" said Willow squirming a little under the weight of three pairs of eyes. "We've been getting the messy end of it" There was a pause "Like, can I get a carry-out bottle? It'll go along way to chilling them out, you know? I gotta work with those assholes" she finished with a lame attempt at a smile.
03 May 2023, 8:08pm
“… I feel kind of sorry for the big guy and, er, the other person.”, I remarked, to no one in particular. feeling a blush coming up through either not catching or not knowing names. It felt even more inappropriate than before. “Not so sure about the guy who keeps staring at his tablet, though… I don’t get the impression he’s very nice.”

‘Was this my fault?’, I couldn’t help but ask myself, and the attempt to hide it on my face was in vain. It very much showed. Shaking my head, I sighed.

“Why do I keep fucking up everything wherever I show up?”, I let out. “Sorry for the language. I just… maybe I should just leave. Coming here was a mistake.”

The credit chip laying abandoned on the table reinforced my feelings, but I decided to just wait around, even though my body was practically screaming at me not to.
03 May 2023, 8:08pm
Silvia lets out a sigh as the group turns to leave. She had hoped to prevent the patrons from leaving and only intended to help Damran corral his troops morale. She turns to Kira a smile on her face and a little smirk.

'Oh come now dear. Lets break you out of that shell. Karaoke is good for the soul. You remind me soo much of my beloved Venus when I first met her. She was shy and felt as though she would embarrass herself with something like this.'

She sighs and looks to creamy seemingly looking to see if it was something she had done to cuase the guests to leave. She looks to Willow once more.

'This one I only met the once but she and I share a similar story. Her name is Willow.'

Damran Steeridge"Well done. Excellent service; and first-class self-importance, I'll leave you a great review" he lied "The song on the other hand, that was good. Surprisingly"

There was one thing Silvia disliked and it was a dishonest person. The sarcasm and blatant lie was picked up on and she without think fired back. Her irish accent filling in more as she grew angrier.

'Ye know that is the exact response I would expect out of an entitled Imperial brat. Seems you don't care what the rest of us 'ere think of the damned Empire. All of ye lot are the same. Always thinkin' yer better than the rest of us.'
03 May 2023, 8:13pm
'Oh come now dear. Lets break you out of that shell. Karaoke is good for the soul. You remind me soo much of my beloved Venus when I first met her. She was shy and felt as though she would embarrass herself with something like this.'

Silvia’s response had come right after I let out my inner thoughts. I looked at her for a moment before replying.

“Uh, no, I mean like, I’m absolutely horrible at dancing. I know from experience. And I’m not sure I can tolerate much more embarrassment right now…”

I looked toward the door, symbolically.

“As if I needed more reminders that I’m as good at social things as a fish is at surviving on dry land. I stay in my ship about all the time for a reason.”

I sighed, only catching on Willow’s name at the edge of my mind.

‘She probably thinks I’m an idiot, anyway.’, I thought to myself, not willing to say that out loud when she was within listening distance.

Willow Thorn"So, eh, hi again.

'Very well this one is on the house.' Silvia grabs a bottle of the finesest wiskey she could find.

'Do pass along my sincere apologies to the crew. I have been in the same boat before. I didn't mean to cause grief. We had a similar incident a while back working humanitarian missions back on earth after a storm. So I meant only to help from experience.'

Silvia turns back to Kira and again smile politely.

'Everyone here has been embarrassed at some point. If you feel uncomfortable singing and dancing then maybe there is something that would help keep your mind calm and loosen you up a bit. Your as stiff as a board and could do with some relaxation.'

She looks to creamy with a devilish smile. The tone she chooses is playful and slightly flirtatious in nature.

'If sir Goodness here is the same welp I had heard soo much about he could certainly help you relax a bit. He has a way with the ladies that makes you feel comfortable.'

'If sir Goodness here is the same welp I had heard soo much about he could certainly help you relax a bit. He has a way with the ladies that makes you feel comfortable.'

The proposal had the exact opposite of the intended effect, and made me feel even more uncomfortable.

“I’m… uh… not… really my… style.”, I stuttered out, before getting a slight grip on myself. “Sorry. I don’t do those… things with strangers. Or anyone not very close. And I, uh, might have some… preferences, in the other direction.”

That was all I had to say to it.

“What I would take is a simple conversation, one-on-one. But I’m not sure this is the right time. Or if there ever will be. I heard all those things that were said to be so great about the station, but instead, the markets just rip you off - not that I care -, the locals don’t want pilots like me here because they have nutjobs as managers, and the one person that I really did want to speak to…”

I looked at Willow, to leave no doubt about who I meant.

“I’m not even sure there’s a point. First I run her off, and the second time, all I do is shout right next to her, or bitch like the broken mess that I am.” I sighed, feeling some tears welling up in my eyes. “I can’t even do the making friends act straight unless we’re both in some shitty position against our choosing. Why should anyone want me?”

I paused.

“I’m leaving this station tomorrow if nothing happens to change my mind. All it’s done is make me feel like shit.”

I moved over to a couch to sit down, holding my head in my hands once I did. It was all that I felt I could do.
03 May 2023, 9:05pm
"So thx Silvia, like this'll go a long way to cooling them off, and like Ephrain isn't an Imperial by the way, he's from an indi system. He's just real clever, and a dick about it"

Silvia Sharpe
'If sir Goodness here is the same welp I had heard soo much about he could certainly help you relax a bit. He has a way with the ladies that makes you feel comfortable.'

Hearing that kind of talk made Willow blush so hard, her cheeks damn near burned the Altairian Skin culture off her face. She looked at the big blond man lounging at the piano, obviously enjoying the company of the women. Silvia's cheeky aside to him, suddenly made his friendly smile look like a thirsty carnal leer of lust.

Pausing only to try a casual wave to the other woman, followed by a quick "Hi again" Willow scampered after her work team without daring to look back in case the blond guy was following her.
