General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Of course I don’t mind. Bit weird looking up at someone to talk.”, I replied. “Or at least, I think it is.”

I took a deep breath, closing my eyes.

“I really don’t want to go into the details, right now, anyway. Maybe if I get to return at some point. Not yet sure… anyway. It’s not even my fault. But some… things happened, maybe in August last year.”

“Have had to be careful since. I already don’t trust easily, and this doesn’t make it easier. Not the first time they tried either, but since that resulted in a fractured arm and some broken ribs that are still recovering now, I decided to go with a diversion instead.”

I didn’t feel like going deeper, especially since I was nearly killed then, and sighed.

“As to this Thargoid business, I’m afraid I’m past the point where I can just ignore it. You’ve seen the pictures, right? Those systems they’ve attacked? And now, people are about to go poke the hornet’s nest. Do they really think it’ll do anything but piss them off more?”

I let my head hang.

“Sorry. I just get worked into this way too much. None of it’s your concern anyway, and I’m not sure I want to drag other people into my own mess.”

"Seen it m'dear? I live it. I fly Evac Condas for a charity, and just the other night I was flying an AX fleet support vessel. I know only too well what those things can do. Still, you can't save everyone, and you have to think of your self"

Creamy looked solemn for a moment, not an expression that visited his easy going attitude very often.

"Yes, you see, one can't be the hero if one is coming apart" Looking at Kira, Creamy put his smile back on "Relax while you can, change ya clothes, and don't be alone. They can't get ya while you're with other people. Take it from an often swiped Imp. You're not a real Nobel unless you've been kidnapped at least once"

“Also been there myself, for a few months. Both on the giving and receiving end, or running people out of Azimuth’s giant cluster… uh, you know what I mean.”

I paused for a second, dwelling on my feelings.

“That bastard Salvation just had to fire his stupid megalomaniac superweapon and piss them off. Could’ve been so much easier if not for his flights of fancy, thinking we have any right to be better than a species that learned spaceflight while we were cave men throwing rocks at each other.”

“Anyway, I don’t really like hiding my appearance but I guess I… ugh, forget it. I’ll be gone after tonight anyway, to a place where they can’t get me. And I always wear one of these suits for protection regardless of where I go.”

“But the people they are, not sure having others around me would help. They’re some of the most uncaring people you can find out here. All ‘ends justify the means’, no ethics worth noting to be found. Rather be dead than to have them take me.”

I decided to change the subject, no longer feeling comfortable with it.

“What’s it like to be an Imperial anyway? I like to rag on them because I think some of those things they’ve got going are pretty stupid - and I wouldn’t stay on an Imperial station for very long if I ever spoke to anyone proper - but hearing an insider’s view is always interesting.”
08 May 2023, 1:59pm
"Well that's the thing you see, everyone outside the Empire has a view, and they let us know about it. They don't let the fact that they are wrong on a few fundamental levels get he in the way of a good hard tongue lashing"

He lean back linking his hands behind his head and stretched out his long dancers legs relaxing a little.

"The main thing people forget, is that most imperial citizens they talk to are just that, citizens with no more ability to effect Imperial policy beyond their vote. They don't deserve that vitriol they are subjected to"

"I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not a perfect utopia. If you happen to live in a system governed by Zemina Torval, you're pretty much living the stereotype; and I don't much trust Danton Peters either"

Creamy looked for a drink he didn't have, and with a little disappointment, got back to his description.

"If I was the average Jonny Imp, living where I come from, I think I would have been quite happy until Her Imperial Majesty the Princess abolished slavery"

That was a tough thing to say to people outside the Empire, so Creamy didn't linger.

"You see, it's not what most people think, unless you're under the Wicked Witch Zemina of course. It's more like being in the army. You must do what you're told, but the company that own your contract will use what skills you have, until you have worked your self free of what ever got you enslaved. Usually debt or crime dont'cha know?"

"Now, Her Imperial Majesty the Princess; my boss" continued Creamy turning to show the Princess' badge on his shoulder "Being the wet softy she is got rid of slavery plunging our economy into the ground. Turns out you can't build a civilization on indentured labor and then take it away without consequences"

Creamy stopped, realizing her had been talking for a good while.

"Oh I am sorry, I tend to get carried away when someone actually is interested in m'home dont'cha know? Listen, I need to change and shower, but I'll be around later"

Creamy got his holo-scroll out and slung his contact to Kira.

Thats me. If anyone doses come for you, let Security know naturally, then give me a shout. I really am quite good at that sort of thing" finished Creamy with a very confident wink as he stood up.

I watched Creamy leave before I had a chance to respond to the wall of information thrown at me, and explain that I knew the difference between indentured servitude and slavery as Torval drove it. Or that I supported Aisling despite not being an Imperial, past or present, and that I took other issues with the Empire as a whole.

The thought was no longer worth pursuing anyway, so I looked at the contact information I was given, not sure what to do with it. I kept it, just in case, wondering if he suspected at all that it wasn't random slavers or people looking to extort someone with a ransom, but Azimuth, looking for me. Then I went back to waiting for Willow, reading varied, largely irrelevant news material while doing so.

Why not go out? It was a day off, and a day off from the guys was just as good as a day off from work. There was a slim chance this Kira was sent by The Outfit; that would explain her interest in Willow, but whatever. She put on what was comfortable, in her current enjoyed red and black mix; her taste would change again soon enough.

The only thing Willow really concentrated on getting right was the jacket. It needed to hide Alice’s knife that she had put in a sheath on her back. If The Outfit were trying something, Alice would make them pay in blood before the merc’s she had paid very well finished the job.

After a final check in the mirror to see the knife was hidden and her black makeup was perfect, Willow when to the Galactic.

Stopping outside the door, Willow steadied her nerves and tried to relax. She was just meeting someone; people did it every day so it was no big deal right? Doing her best to look casual, Willow walked in on lightly magnetic heeled ankle boots and looked for Kira.

She was on her own in a booth near the back, just the sort of place Willow liked if she had to go out to a place like this. Walking over, the first hurdle was how to say hi. She waved and nodded, and tried to shake hands all at the same time, and give up on all of them.

“So, oh, um .. Er. Hi I guess”
08 May 2023, 4:26pm
I'd observed Willow's approach from the corner I was in, feeling a little bit nervous, despite our conversations via messages. It was one thing to talk to a person in a digital format, and another when both were physically present.

I wasn't sure whether to stand up or remain seated when she greeted me, then realized the pistol on my thigh provided a convenient distraction, and would give the wrong impression. I took it by the barrel, ensured the safety remained on, and discarded it on the couch, out of convenient reach.

"Hi.", I then said. "Don't... don't mind the weapon. For personal defense. I wanted it with me after some shady people tried coming after me last night. Or two nights ago. Don't quite remember."

I wasn't sure how to continue.

"So, uh... nice to meet you, Willow? Or whatever they say when two people meet properly for the first time."
08 May 2023, 4:53pm
That was a lot to deal with while still on the 'hi, how you doin' phase of the evening. Whatever, the gun was out now. It was sitting there like a dangerous wrench, just a tool, but demanding all the attention.

Willow thought about that, maybe it was a distraction, so she put her eyes back on Kira.

"Sooo, when you haven't got anything to shout, you just throw a gun out right there huh?"
08 May 2023, 5:05pm
“Well, uh…”, I started, scratching my head with my right hand. “I don’t make it a secret that I’m better at shooting people than socializing, but I guess that’s why I’m trying this.”

Before any other wrong impressions were taken out of the statement, I added to it.

“But like, I make it a point only to shoot the people that make themselves my enemy or otherwise wrong someone. Like pirates. I won’t need that with you.”

‘Kind of wish I’d thought about more to say’, I added in my thoughts.

“Okay, this is a little awkward.” I stood up, ignoring the weapon. “To be honest, I didn’t really think about what I’d say much. I hope the guys on your team aren’t too grumpy after that… uh, incident, a few days ago.”
08 May 2023, 5:18pm
"Yeah, you know guys. They act all tough but they're real sensitive you know? They got over it as soon as the food thing was fixed. So like I got brothers, lot of them; so I got inside information, and like, fill um up with food they love fixes everything"

That was about it for small talk, and now Willow didn't know what to do.

"So um. Food?"
08 May 2023, 5:24pm
“Food… yeah, food doesn’t sound like a terrible idea.” My stomach suddenly gave off a grumbling sound. “… I may have forgotten to eat since yesterday. My mind was a little… preoccupied with other things.”

I looked over to the bar for a second.

“Here or elsewhere? Can’t say I know what it’s like to have brothers, though. Just a…” I went silent for a moment. “Sister. A… well, she’s not here now. If you get what I mean.”
08 May 2023, 5:38pm
"Here I think. Like, the guys have decided they are staying out the way of haunts popular with pilots, and like, I've had enough of the boys for a while you know?"

"I get the gun thing too" said Willow taking a few small steps towards the bar. "The bubble is full of shits that like, need shooting so you better bring it with you, I guess"
08 May 2023, 5:51pm
"Sounds like a bit what I had going with my family.", I remarked. "Like, just had to get away from them every now and then. Never got along too well, other than one of them. Eventually, I just, like, moved out completely, even though they didn't want to kick me out yet."

I started going toward the bar too.

"Can't say I blame them for not wanting to put up with pilots though. Like, sometimes it feels like most of us aren't very, uhm... nice, I guess. So anyway, I didn't want to give the wrong impression with that thing." I pointed back to where I left the pistol. "Not, like, having it because of you or anything. So what do they offer here? Only got something outside my ship once here, so far, and it wasn't in this place."
08 May 2023, 6:02pm
"I'm a pre-pack girl you know? Growing up on like, the ship and stations, I kind of got the taste for additives, preservatives and E numbers. I like it fresh out the pack" Said Willow checking out the ready-to-eay meals from the vending machine.

"Hey, don't leave that thing there. They are like, dangerous you know? And what if you need it?"

Willow made a selection. Something meaty in pastry with some fried potato wedges on the side.

"See anything you like? Kira?"
08 May 2023, 6:14pm
“Fine. I’ll go get the thing. Just thought to leave it there for now, and pick it up later. And I sent those guys from A- well, I sent them off to chase an empty ship. They won’t be coming back so soon.”

I went back to pick up the pistol, and attached it to the suit again, then came to the vending machine.

“Not really sure what to pick… I do usually just eat on my ship, too. Don’t need to bother seeing people just so you can eat. Sometimes make it myself. Or order something to it. Anyway…”

I looked at available offers and settled on what fish sticks with some rice as an addition, waiting for Willow to clear the machine before using it.
