General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

'You didn't go to the Med Bay. I know you didn't. You are pale and your steps are off balance. Plus you are wearing armor and your gear has been rearranged. You are not going anywhere in your state.'

Silvia rolls her eyes at Desdar. Venus had on multiple occasions attempted to pull the same stunt so she was used to the signs of one not seeking proper care. She grabs Desdar by the arm and leads him to a booth. Jules follows suit and pulls the table out of the way. Jules looks at Silvia and chuckles while shaking her head.

'I'll be right back. I'm going to get my med bag.'
23 Apr 2023, 6:58pm
Desdar lets Silva lead him to the bench and sits down, with a small look of surprise on his face.
"No, wait. I did change my clothes, and yes after getting shot in the bar I'll be more careful, but I didn't skip on medical. Last time I did I lost my eyes so I did learn that lesson."

He pulls out his data pad and shows them the bill from medical.
"Treatment for the leg took about 45 minutes and I got meds for the concussion. It will take a day or two to fully heal but moving around is fine according to the nurses."

With a wry smile, he gestures to Jules to put the desk back. He looks from Jules to Silva.

"I'm sorry for making you worry."

He turns to Eliza. " Thank you. It's good to be up. I'd be thankful if you could bring me a bottle of sparkling water, should you find one. If not still is fine."

Desdar turns to face Jules again. "Sorry, again, I'm Desdar and it's nice to meet you."
23 Apr 2023, 11:30pm
'My name is Julia Irene Cavanaugh. Most everyone calls me Jules. The man you encountered is Marcus Diaz. He is prior Imperial Navy Special Forces.'

Jules takes a seat next to Desdar and continues speaking.

'Diaz and a few other people including their squad leader were participating in some off the books slaving for some serious credits. When they got caught by Venus, Silvia's wife, they tried to convince her to join them. She instead went to the squadron commander and brought the concern to her attention.'

Silvia brings over a bottle of sparkling water and a chilled glass. She pulls a chair up and takes a seat. Silvia chimes in doing her best to recall the events as Venus had explained several years ago.

'Diaz and their squadron leader decided to attempt to end Venus' life for ruining their operation. They failed. Several years later Diaz took his revenge and had Venus tried for murder. She was stripped of her rank and exiled from the Empire.'

Jules leans back against the bench and crosses her arms before continuing.

'He spent the next several months building up his slave network again. That is when I was roped into his scheme. Gnarly work it was. He killed quite a few people in the process all the while amassing the massive bounty on his head. His right hand man is dead after Venus and Her friend Ava rescued us from him. He has a few people left in his crew that are extremely loyal to him. I do not know where they are located now. I was hoping he would just stay away from us. Clearly I was wrong for that.'

Desdar takes the bottle and glass from Silva.

"Thank you."

During the explanation, he jolts down notes on his datapad. After listening to the explanation Desdar is quiet for a while.

"Too many things don't make sense." He says slowly, taking breaks to organize his thoughts and notes.
"He should have faced a firing squad for slaving as INSpecForce...
Attempted murder should mean a sentence of slavery if not death depending on Venus' rank and family ... "

Desdar leans forwards as he turns the pages of his notes.
"The murder trial and exile sentence smell like a sham, like they were trying to avoid bringing much attention to it.

Rebuilding an illegal slave network isn't easy or cheap. Nobody would buy from an unlicenced slaver." Desdar falls quiet for a few seconds grimacing. "Or at least they shouldn't if their honor is worth anything to them," he mumbles almost inaudibly.

"I have a strong feeling that he has a high-ranking political benefactor. While there are many imperial families vying for power such underhanded tactics are very risky for them. While some of the branches are rotting the roots still are strong. If word ever gets out that family is done for. "

His finger taps on a word written in red on his datapad.

"I don't want to exclude any intra-empirical political wrangling but I think he has a federal benefactor, a big one."

Desdar looks up from his datapad.
His voice becomes gentler. "I'm happy that you could escape Jules and " he turns to face Silvia "your wife must have been an outstanding person. I'm truly sorry for your loss. The galaxy is lesser without her."

His voice becomes firmer again.
"Diaz can't let you go. You Jules "he looks at the woman sitting next to him "either know something or have something or are somebody that would link him to his benefactor. Silvia you" Empathy softens his voice as he looks back over to Silvia "probably don't hold much importance in the eyes of Diaz' benefactor but ..." Desdar trails off unable to finish his thoughts.

A deep sigh escapes his mouth before he continues. "You should mourn your loss in peace, so you needn't tell a stranger like me anything if you don't want to, and I am sorry for dredging your past up like this, but I must ask. What was your wife's complete name?"
24 Apr 2023, 5:46pm
Silvia hangs her head low and let's out a sigh. She knew why he was asking. She knew that the reason one would ask her full name was so they could link pieces together.

'Venus Aloy............' She pauses before speaking her last name. 'Duval.'

Jules after all this time just puts the pieces together.

'Wait that doesn't makes sense.... she can't be related to them can she? We know the bloodline is public information. So how......'

'She was a branch forgotten. Her family was disowned by the royal family for their independent views. She hated much of the Empire. Venus wanted so badly to defect from the royal navy but felt she needed to prove her worth. It's why she was exiled instead of killed....'

Silvia's words were like ice. The memory of Venus being drug out of the courtroom screaming and crying. The look on Ava's face when she released Venus to Silvia outside of imperial space.

'Her rank of Duchess was stripped from her. It broke her. The caring, loving, kind woman I fell in love with, turned bitter and careless. She took on bounties for people linked to Diaz. She killed innocent people because they looked too much like Diaz and his cronies.'

Silvia begins to cry, the thought of watching the person you love go mad, was to much for her to bare. She buried her face in her hands as tears poured from her face.

'I had heard some of this explained to me but from a different side.'

Jules' voice in lowered so as to not upset Silvia more.

'Diaz said that Venus had indeed killed their squad leader, even Grenshaw his right hand man said it happened.'

She leans in closer to Desdar as she continues.

'I don't know who the benefactor is and I don't much care. Diaz must be stopped. I know how his operation works. He uses system security forces to cover up his raids and attacks. He hits high value targets usually covering up his slaving actions by attacking cargo vessels or exploration ships with cargo holds. The ambush pilots scoop up the jettisoned escape pods before grabbing the cargo. The security force member then writes up a false incident report and sends that in to headquarters before ridding the scene of any contradicting evidence.'

Jules sighs heavily then speaks in a regretful tone.

'I know this because I was the one who interdicted Silvia upon her return from deep space. I didn't know they were going to take her..' Jules starts to get choked up a little at the remembrance of the ambush. 'I was only in it for the extra money. Piracy of goods is one thing but living things.... No I can't do that.'

While listening Desdar pulls up information on his datapad. Notes get jotted down, and his eyebrows furrow.

At Silvia's outburst, his features soften, and wordlessly and quietly he pulls a packet of paper tissues out of a pocket, which he places in the middle of the table. As Desdar listens to Jules' explanation an expression of incongruity quickly changes, as his jaw slightly clenches and his mouth slightly presses into a line at Jules' last words. His hand lifts up the sunglasses and pinches the back of his nose. Closed eyes can be seen. He takes a deep slow breath. His face relaxes, and he releases his nose and adjusts the glasses.

His voice is quiet, so as leave room for Silvia to grieve.

"None should be forced to serve such a person. I'm happy you managed to get out, even though it cost you dearly."

"Though if my conjecture is right, you should care, ..., but you are right, Diaz must be stopped." Tap Tap, on his datapad.
"They do not hit passengers vessels? Only explorers and freighters? Is security present during the raids or are they called in later? In which systems does his influence allow him to do so? What ships are usually in the ambush force?"

"As for ships I have an armed freighter in mothball. I could sacrifice some shelf space to exchange the shield generator for the largest class pri... As for weapons it's armed well enough to shoot down any pirate I've come across. Cheaply load up on water and see if he bites?"
25 Apr 2023, 12:17am
'Security is used to interdict the targets. The ambush ships are typically waiting in Supercruise waiting for the signal from the security ship to validate the manifest. The most common ambush ships to be utilized are Challengers or Fer De Lance. As for the passenger vessels they do not need to target them anymore. The Thargoid assault has made it extremely easy for them to load up on passengers and sell them off to the black market.'

Jules shifts nervously in her seat. She looks over to Silvia a look of sorrow on her face.

'Look from my brief time at the last outpost the money came direct from Diaz. There doesn't seem to be anyone above him the only one who was, is said to be dead. The footage from that date however has been scrubbed from the data banks on everyone involved in the incident.'

Jules checks over her shoulder seemingly on edge.

'The best place to look for any clues would be 69 G. Carinae C 5 A near Gardner point. Though it would be unlikely he is still around there.'

She stands and walks over to the bar. She grabs a chilled glass and pours a drink. As she returns she continues.

'You put yourself on his radar the moment you stood up to him.'

*Looks up from making arrangements to have the "Edge of Diplomacy" shipped over*

Wake up lad. You're in the bar.

*was listening in on the conversation but didn't want to interfere with something I hardly understand*
I'm going to find that rude big one I wished away and introduce him to my enforcer cannons! This is not how indentured service is supposed to work. He is a bad cookie!

Furrylances.... Bleh! See! Bad!
25 Apr 2023, 3:12pm
Desdar firmly shakes his head, his voice is still quiet. "You are probably right Jules but that doesn't matter. I told him that should he have a bounty I'll hunt him, I won't go back on that. Even if he didn't he is a threat to people and my country, and my honor won't allow me to leave him be."

He offers his datapad to exchange his business contacts. "I'll be going and see what can find at 69 G. crossreference it with ship movement of the station. If I find something I'll let you know and we can meet here again to discuss. I'll also get my freighter out of mothball and have it prepped for a reverse ambush, but it'll take a while to be ready."

Desdar then stands up and moves next to Silvia. His voice is gentle as he calls out to her. " Silvia."
Desdar waits for Silvia to look at him, putting his hand on her shoulder.
"Your wife was a great person, carry on her light in the galaxy for the dark is overwhelming without light."

Still gently but less emotional Desdar continues:
"I'll be going now, to investigate and to get other things ready. You can contact me here," he holds out his datapad to Silvia to exchange his business contacts, "to set up a meeting should you find a new lead, or should you just want to talk."

After a few moments, Desdar nods and addresses both Silvia and Jules. "I'll be taking my leave, stay safe, and see you soon."

Before leaving the bar Desdar walks over to Eliza. "I'll be going back into the black now, I got some work to do. Thank you very much for cheering me up before. Let's meet again in the void."

'Be careful desdar. If you encounter any sign of him, send a beacon. My eagle might be frail but she is nimble enough to keep a beam on.'

Jules inputs her info into the data pad. She stands from her seat and walks over to Eli.

As Desdar places a hand on Silvia's shoulder she looks up and shakes her head.

'Maybe in the beginning she was..... but there at the bitter end she was not. Her heart was filled with rage. She would have killed anyone who stood in her way. The light that was in her heart was replaced by darkness. I loved her dearly but I could see that she had lost her way.'

She stands from her seat after putting her info into the data pad. She walks over and joins Eli and Jules.

'As for you..... if you go after him do be careful.... he would gladly force you into slavery.'

She turns so she can see both Desdar and Eli.

'Both of you Fly safe and live dangerously. Jules and I have some prep to do. We are heading to Amenta. There is something there that I need.'

Jules hands two small holo disks to Eli both containing holograms of Jules and Silvia.

'Should you find yourself in conflict of any sort and need assistance press the center of one of those holo disks it will send out a distress beacon to one of us. We will arrive as quickly as we can.'

Silvia grabs Jules hand and the two of them proceed to Silvia's ship to head to Amenta for some needed preparation.

She read the message again not noticing the last of her extract had dripped on to her plate of Ready-Steady-mEAT! that the Chief had got for her. It had taken a little convincing that she really did prefer prepack food, but he'd shrugged and got it from the vending machine for her. Now she wasn't hungry.

"Good to hear from you Willow. Hope you have fully recovered from that awful episode. Would love to get together. Might take a while, I'm nebula-hopping now. Only 100 or so left to visit. We really should keep in touch. Take care. Descartes.
"

Was that an excuse? Was she really thousands of light years away, or just blowing Willow off. Why did it matter? She'd done the same to Descartes and Maul, so even if Dee was avoiding her, it wasn't all that unfair.

The meet and greet was the worst ever. Mark, the agency guy had taken some convincing that Damran didn't mind getting him fresh food if he wanted it, and he wasn't really the talkative type, understandably. Professor Ephrain had been polite enough not to be rude, and then hadn't looked up from his fancy holo-pad since the food arrived, and Transylvania High's cheer leader looked like she'd just been told her dog had died.

The bar was dead too. Security had told him there was some action there, and he was thinking if the team had to deal with some asshole pilots, it would be great for bonding. No such luck. Something had to be done.

"So what about that assassination, huh? Crazy right, do you think the imps really did it?"

Mark glanced up before concentrating on his plate again, but no one else even registered Damran had spoken.

"Thorn? What do you think? Hey, you from an Empire system girl?"
