General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Like yeah, I'm usually all about that you know? I'm, I'm not just.. Ok so my family are all salvagers right, scavengers really, but we got a company now so it's all legal and real"

"But like, doing that, we came across a lot of dead people as you can guess; and like, the pilot's federation are real shitty when to come to dealing with the deceased"

Willow turned to face Kira properly. She wanted to leave right now, but that would be a real mean spirited thing to do.

"So my big sister, Ash, my real life hero, became an undertaker. She like, did it the right way ok? So I mean if you lost someone, and the body was retrieved, you want to know they were cared for right? Well that's what Ash did, and I followed in her footsteps"

"So I mean like, when I find someone, I take care of them and do what I can to find their family; to like, take them home for the last time. That means I deal with a lot of upset people, but right now, I'm upset people, and I need time to get my head right"

It was not a nice feeling, but it was honest. Willow was not her self and she knew it.

"Like, I'm not the person to help you deal right now, you know?"
08 May 2023, 9:40pm
Creamy wasn't listening in, but he could read body language like most people read text, and these two were talking in big print. Their evening wasn't going well.

It was a shame, because from what he knew of Kira, she was quite nice. A bit tucked away, but she was alright when she opened up. Willow, Creamy didn't know at all really, but she seemed pretty much the same as Kira; that could mean they were a good match, or so much alike, it just wouldn't work.

Unfortunately, it looked like then latter, and not amount of mood music was going to change that.
08 May 2023, 9:43pm
“Okay. I understand that. Just… I don’t actually want you to deal with my shit, okay? I just thought that… fuck, maybe I shouldn’t have thought.”

I lowered my head, then faced her too.

“You know that thing they say, how people telling each other deep stuff means they trust each other or something? I thought it would tell you that I’m interested. Not in that way, but like, I wouldn’t have asked if we could meet if I didn’t want to just chat and figure out how we get along.”

“Besides, I need to screw my head back on myself. If I even can. I appreciate that you feel the way you do about it, but this isn’t something you can get involved with much. At least, I don’t think.”

“Anyway, like, let’s just forget about what stupid shit we’re dealing with right now. We weren’t here to dump our sorrow on each other’s heads now, were we? Unless you want to hear me bitch about how stupid people are for thinking we can hold a number to the Thargoids, as entertaining as my ramblings might sometimes be.”

I hoped my half-baked attempt at turning the conversation to another rail and lighten the mood a little had landed as I intended it to.
08 May 2023, 9:53pm
"Yeah, so that's way too heavy for me, and like, even without talking about it, it's hanging there like the sword of Damocles you know?"

Willow stood up and retrieved her bottle of extract, and necked her glass of wine.

"Like what I need is a big old slice of normal and boring right now, and unfortunately, you're not that. Good night Kira, be safe"

Without looking back, Willow made to leave the bar.
08 May 2023, 10:05pm
I couldn’t help but to roll my eyes a little. Perhaps opening up in that way wasn’t my best idea, but outright ignoring the apology felt a little disingenuous - or that’s how it came across, anyway. The ‘normal and boring’ remark also felt just a little underhanded from a distinctly non-ordinary person.

‘Fine, have it your way then. I was going to leave today anyway.’, I thought to myself, and didn’t bother looking after her, instead going over to the stage.

“So you’ve probably been watching, and I don’t want a comment.”, I said to Creamy, making it very clear I didn’t want to address the subject greatly. “She wants to act like that, she can keep looking for her ‘normal and boring’ friend, instead of telling me that she’s going to at least think it over.”

I shook my head, finding the outburst at the wrong person inappropriate.

“Sorry. I’m just going to stay and waste time talking until my ship is here. Then I’m leaving this station.”
08 May 2023, 10:18pm
"Oh I understand, been there my self if you can believe that! Who'd say no to all this?" asked Creamy striking a casual yet suggestive seated pose.

She didn't want a replay, or his expert opinion on what he saw, so Creamy kept all that to him self.

"Any idea where you're going? You see, if I know, and someone comes asking, I can send them the wrong way"

Creamy played a few notes to fill the silence.

"Where ever you go, I do hope you don't go alone. It may feel like the right thing to do, but I don't believe it is"
08 May 2023, 10:26pm
I placed my hands on my hips.

“Is that a song, advice, or both? And I’ll give her my thoughts on that not-very-nice writeoff before I go, but if I do that now she’ll just block off the number.”

“And where I go isn’t something I can tell you, I’m afraid. The location is secret for good reason. I think it is, anyway. Need-to-know basis only.”

“What I can tell you is that I told her a thing or two. Namely, this.”

I ensured no one else was looking, pulled off my right-hand suit glove and tugged the sleeve back, to reveal the fading white lines of an ink-branding, in the forms of an H, a dash and a seven.

“Make of that what you will.”, I said, while hiding it again. “It’s been nearly three years since I have that, but it only got meaning rather recently. Nor did I know it was there before then.”
08 May 2023, 10:50pm
Creamy shrugged"You'll do what you must, people tend to" said Creamy casting an eye over the mark.

Talking quietly he said "Seventh Heaven ay? She's missing out. Well, if anyone asks, I'll say you suddenly felt compelled to visit the Guardian ruins. Do feel free to let me know if that actually the direction you end up heading, and I'll send anyone that asks to Colonia instead"

"That's the best I can do for you, I'm sorry to say. Don't think a song is going to help you right now, unless there's something you'd like to hear?" asked Creamy playing a few bars of Little Miss Can't be Wrong, and then a snippet of Now She's Gone. His personal choice in brake up tunes.
08 May 2023, 10:56pm
“Not sure what ‘Seventh Heaven’ is, but that’s really, really not what that means. If anything, way worse. Got to be straight about this - because I’m tired of hiding it - but it’s everyone’s favorite and totally not evil company Azimuth that got it for me.”

“Oh, and I wasn’t going to the Guardian sites. Not right now, at least. I’ll be going somewhere that if anyone does try to come after me, they’ll be prosecuted anywhere that isn’t independent space or Colonia.”

I thought about the music for a bit.

“Please do avoid anything that goes in the direction of sorrow, if you’d like. That’s all I can really say. Not usually much of a musical person, so I don’t have particularly expressed tastes or dislikes.”
09 May 2023, 12:43am
I watched a Federal Corvette approach a landing pad, with the unmistakable black and blue paint on top of corrosive burn marks, and knew my ride was there. This also meant the two modules I needed to return with it were as well. As if on cue, I received a message from Alba too, inquiring about my current status, and whether I had anything to add to Seo's warning.

"Sorry to say, but it looks like my ship's here. And I need to leave - getting late.", I told Creamy, and pulled a small, round holo-projector out, placing it on the flat top of the piano. "Take this. Contains all the info you need to understand my connection to Azimuth, and them. I'm not sure I'll get the option to return, so for now, this is goodbye. Do feel free to send me a message if you want."

I proceeded to leave the bar after saying that. The projector contained an audio message about my state and how I ended up in it, and would display a Thargoid Interceptor hologram when activated, providing a further hint for anyone with enough information to make the connection. The ship was docked in bay 25, but I stopped outside it after ordering the fuel scoop and FSD booster to be installed. There was one last thing I still wanted to do before I crossed that boundary.

Willow, it's me.

I don't expect you to care about, respond, or reply to this message, but I'm going to send it anyway. If just for the record, so nobody can say I didn't try. Whatever that still means these days.

I don't think that remark you left things off with was ok. Like, come on. 'A normal and boring person'? If you wanted that, you could have realized from the get-go I'm not 'normal and boring' in the slightest. Would you even call yourself that?

I thought people that went through something bad could find a common ground in that, and help each other with it, but instead, you reacted exactly as I expected. By pushing me away, just like nearly everyone else. And you also had to add an insult to the injury. I doubt it was intentional, but it still wasn't nice.

I'm leaving the station now, so you probably won't see me again. I have no choice but to, anyway, and you know why now. I hope you find that 'normal person' you say you need. Don't let the long station shifts get to your head. And if we do ever meet again, hopefully things will go better.

I hit send, then turned off notifications for her message ID completely. Right now, that message was all the energy my mind had for the matter. Not that I expected anything, but I was leaving the option open for the future, if she thought it through and came to a change of mind.

That was fun!
Hello!

Hi Mr. Goodness! *climbs on a barstool* Saw you dance there, you demon! *wink*

Now where is something fun to do? I've been practising hooning around stations. Also been busy racing around the toaster rack in a sidey as fast as I dared. I'd love to find a big structure with lots of holes an passages to zoom a ship through.

I'd like to outfit the Vulture but I have no idea whether to go for a tank or rapid offence build. It's basically a sidewinder++.

I'm glad I don't get attacked by other commanders that much anymore. That special breed of big ones that requires a fully doctored combat-build furrylance to dispatch a sidewinder that's limping back from an extraction zone. So that's good!

Ooooh! A present! *claps hands and bounces on my barstool* I like presents!
I do! I do!
09 May 2023, 7:51am
"El-oh Nubs" said Creamy picking up the holo-disk "Its just a flask of honey from my dads exclusive Apiary. Its good for putting on cuts, but better on toast. Just a little something for my favorite visitor"

He closed the lid of the piano and put an elbow on it to go into deep thought about the ship builds, and used his most serious thinking face to show it.

"I'm not a combat pilot Nubs, so I wouldn't know what to do with a Vulture, but I do like to fly fast. Now if you got your self a Viper or an Eagle, you could build something that does about seven hundred MS, or almost a thousand on a boost. Um, that's really-fast and stoopid-fast on a boost. You should try one of those I think"

"I used to have an Eagle I think, can't remember the name" he lied, Creamy could, but it was dirty and he didn't want to explain the name to Nubs "But I lost it on a sharp turn, and damn near lost my life too. Speaking of sharp turns and Eagles, you should try out Secret Eagle Acres in Eravate. That happens to be where I go shopping dont'cha know? Its a structure with lots of holes and passages just as you said. Amazing what?"
09 May 2023, 4:58pm
Oh yum. Honey! Thank you! It's getting rare enough with people taking their hatred of Thargoids out on everything that looks a little like them. If it keeps up there will only be grass and orchids...
*takes the bottle, wraps it in a scarf and puts it in my bag*
I know how much work this bottle contains?! Priceless! Thank you! *hug*

Oh! *looks unsure whether a hug is customary for big ones, it's confusing*

Oooh! I have an eagle. The (Keen) Edge of Diplomacy. It's really fast and nimble. I'm not really a combat pilot either... I can stand my void with flight assist on. I'm learning the Newtonian thing. Getting better!

Trying to keep my small fighters fast and manoeuvrable. Avoiding fire rather than soaking it up. Tankiness I use on the larger platforms. I tend to fly them into the fray and then just hang there, distribute angry photons and spawning collector limpets to collect the remains of my enemies. With two large platforms and some healyfeelies the limiting factor is literally the number of limpets you can haul.
Effective.... but dull as a spoon.

The raptor-builds are much more fun.
I like small ships a lot. Hmhmm *nod nod*

Eravate you say? I'll go there immediately. Is there anything in the neighbourhood that has a ship-ship-service? My fighters tend to be really poor jumpers.
09 May 2023, 7:57pm
"Oh what a great hug. Thanks Nubs, I'll save some of that for later in case I feel sad"

Getting out his Holo-scroll Creamy checked for stations that still did ship delivery nearby.

"As for your ship shipping Nubs, I think you're going to have to do a little jumping. Only twenty light years or so, you'll manage it. Tryggvason City in Camaye in the closest. Here, I'll sling you the info" said Creamy casting the details to Nubs assuming she had a pad, slate or scroll of some sort.

"I'll be heading to Eravate m'self later. Got a bit more shopping to do, including fetching back some Buffalo sauce. If I see a little ship hossing about Secret Eagle, I'll wave, alright?"
11 May 2023, 6:12am
I'm holed up in Cleve Hub. It's right next to speagle eagle. Thank you! *Wheeeeee!*
