Elite roleplay: The galactic bar

On the back of the bar on various shelves, from all over the galaxy, the fines and rarest ales preside. next to the impressive collection are several screens that can usually be seen playing adverts or the CQC championships.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Having been on station for a few days and no response from Desdar or O'Donnell, Silvia and Jules proceed to the bar. Silvia makes her way behind the counter and pours two glasses of wine.

'I really hope they are ok. Haven't heard anything from them since they left.'

'Well the obituaries aren't showing their names so that's a good sign.'

Silvia takes a seat next to Jules near the stage. She looks around not seeing anyone she recognizes immediately and take a sip from her glass. Letting out a sigh she turn to face Jules.

'*sigh* That is a good thing. Let's just hope they aren't in trouble.'

It’d been just over a week since I’d left the station, and yet, it felt like I’d been away for too long - and not long enough, at the same time. The memory of the failed meetup with Willow was still fresh in my mind.

I pushed the thought aside as I came up to the entrance of the bar, double checking my new attire to make sure it all fit as I intended.

It consisted of a deep black Dominator suit - not that it was easy to tell, thanks to the coloration - and a simple, matching hood, hiding my hair and casting a shadow over my eyes. Enough to conceal my identity from anyone I didn’t want to reveal it to, and security cameras.

It had earned me a few suspicious looks going around, but nobody seemed to actually mind as long as no trouble was caused.

Stepping inside, I noticed the woman who’d introduced herself to me as Silvia during my last visit, alongside another woman I didn’t recognize. Or perhaps I’d just forgotten.

I gave her a subtle ‘I know you’ sign with my left hand, then went over to a corner at the edge of the bar, not expecting to be recognized.

It was same corner I’d used to wait for Willow, but this time, I didn’t expect to see her here, and just wanted somewhere off the ship to relax a little, after my Thargoid adventures of the last two days.

This seemed as good a place as any, so I leaned back, crossed my legs and put my right arm on the arm rest.

I decided to drop by the bar again now, looking for a distraction from bringing supplies to the station, or evacuating refugees from one of the systems affected by a Maelstrom.

Even if not many people were there, it still provided me with a few conversations to listen to, perhaps get some insights on how people close to the front perceived the current, and mostly relative, stalemate.

Things looked as empty as during my last visit, when I entered. I still wore my concealing attire - with some silver coloration applied to parts of the suit, to better match the intricate patterns on the hood - and so, made it a point to make myself noticed more, if anyone that interested me dropped by.

Lo and behold, oh great pilots! Lillianna returns!

The female pilot Mercenary walks in, dressed in an wholely unmodified and thoroughly beaten-up Artemis suit, helmet strapped to her hip and Aphelion attached to her chestplate by lieu of a strap and likely an magnet, a Karma P-15 just below it on her stomach. She immediately beelined for an comfortable seat whereupon arriving she'd sit herself down and sighed exceedingly deeply - deep enough to have most normal people wonder how the hell so much oxygen can pass through someone's lungs within such a timespan -

"Oh, how boring the last period has been.... Thargoid this, Thargoid that. Quick bucks are fun but not when the Rescue Rangers have started to automate my rescue process... Good thing I've still got my next best hobby." Mumble mumble, the woman seems to be talking to someone on comms. Or not? Lilianna has probably gone insane, to be quite honest. Lots of space travel on your own does something, man.

"Lets see, not been around much, what's GalNet gotta say? Hrm... Titans, Aegis... The regular. Presidentials coming up... Nothing much to concern myself with. Anything else? Scarlett's been as quiet as ever, the First Seat too. Wonder if they're still alive, honestly." The woman grunts as she scrolled through her datapad, not finding anything of remote interest.

So she just went to watching cat videos in silence.

Stepping into the bar I can't help but feel as though I have been her before. It feels familiar but also strange and foreign. I walk over to the bar and look over the drinks menu.

*Some of these names are.... well interesting*

I think to myself as I tap the drinks holo and close it not finding anything I care to drink. I pop behind the bar and mix up a blue concoction and step away from the bar. I had left this foreign but familiar station a few days prior in hopes to find a new companion but something drew me back in. I couldn't put a finger on it but it was almost as if being on the station kept me feeling sane.

The busy workers running around trying to repair the station. The cargo ships bringing in supplies and resources to aid the workers and patrons who managed to not allow the thargoids threat to prevent them from living their best lives.

I find a seat near the exit and stare out into Citi Gateway wondering if there are any people out there whom I had met prior to my accident. Even if there were it's not like I'd remember meeting them since most of my memory is gone from the past year.

I take a sip of my drink and wait. Maybe someone will come along maybe not. I pull out my data pad and read through some of the old messages between Venus and I from the beginning of the Thargoid war.

After taking care of some personal business outside the Bubble, I decided to drop by the Galactic again, and see if anyone was there. A quick glance around the place told me that - as it had been during the last few times - it was still rather quiet. Or perhaps my memory just failed me on any faces to recognize.

With that being the case, I decided to go into my usual preferred corner, where my black suit and hood blended in with the shadows, and looked at a picture of me and my sister, dwelling on the positive memories I had of, and with, her, while keeping an eye out for anyone who might come in... or if someone's looks came back to me.
02 Jun 2023, 9:22pm
Covered in dust and soot I wander into the bar. My most recent trip to a Rocky body didn't quite go and planned but I am alive. I look around the room, again feel like I both know and don't know this station. It's familiarity is unnerving but I can't seem to justify why.

'What to drink? What. To. Drink? Hmmm...'

Looks over the drink menu, still slightly amused by some of the drink names, and again nothing piques my interest. I walk behind the bar and begin the spectacular show of mixing a drink. I pause mid shake as I notice a hooded figure in the shadows. For a second I panic thinking it could be Jules, but her physique is much different.

I finish mixing my drink and pour the neon blue liquid into a glass. I reach into a pouch on my hip and pull out a brightly glowing edible bead and place it into the glass. The drink illuminates brightly making it appear almost radioactive.

Looking up from the cup with a smile on my face I begin to wonder if I know this woman in the shadows. Unsure of my memories I make my way cautiously over to the dark corner. Light refracting off the silcate dust particles covering my Artemis suit and the area illuminating from the violently glowing drink I'm holding, painting everying in a blue hue.

'Uhm..... hi. Do I?.... Do you?.... ugh damn. Come on Silv get it together. *sigh* Have we met before?'
02 Jun 2023, 9:38pm
I looked at the woman walking closer with the colorful drink, not quite recalling the name as she stumbled over herself a little.

"We might have.", I replied, putting the picture away and leaning back, though careful to not allow too close of a glimpse under my hood - it only just about covered the forehead, a conscious decision to allow anyone who caught on to recognize a hue of familiarity. "Can't say I quite remember the name, though. We only spoke once around here. Your mind was on, uh... something else, let's say."

I inspected her appearance more closely. Something was a little different - not necessarily down to the dust-covered suit, but what looked like a recently stitched-together wound on the head. I decided not to ask about it, thinking it impolite.

"So what's behind the suit looking like it's been in a dust storm?"
02 Jun 2023, 10:21pm
'So we have met before......'

Looks down at my dust covered suit and chuckles a little. I take a seat opposite the woman and place my drink on the table.

'You ever been 'splorin' a celestial body near a big...... uhh... *forgets the word crater for a second*...... uhm pi.. no *snaps fingers* ah crater! Yes that's it crater. You ever been on the edge of a giant crater? Well the edge can be a bit soft. I hopped out of my scarab for a better look and well I got a much closer look than I had hoped for.'

Simulates slipping and falling down.

'Slid a couple hundred meters on mi bum 'fore I managed t' stop m'self. Had to navigate about 2km down the darn crater so I could recall mi ship. Came 'ere right afta'.'

I lean in and reach up slowly to move the hood away from, but not off of, the woman's face to get a better look.

'Hmmmm.......'

Allows the hood to fall back into place and leans back in my seat.

'What's yer deal? Why you seem all mysterious? Someone afta ye?'
02 Jun 2023, 10:34pm
"You could say that.", I replied, gently pulling the hood to where I wanted it. "But it's personal stuff, and I know my way around. Nothing illegal - it's just best if I don't get seen, but I don't really want to constantly hide away from everything to do with people either. This..." I gestured at my black suit and the hood. "... is both for anonymity, and protection."

I switched back to the other subject.

"Can't say I ever slipped down into a crater, though. Funny you should mention that, and exploring, though. That's what I did in the last week, and just stood at the edge of a crater a few hours ago, too. The kind that makes you wonder what caused it. Saw one that was over a hundred kilometers wide once, can you imagine? Could've fit a hundred ships in there and have space for more."

"I don't think you're here just to live down the experience a little. I hope you don't mind me saying, but those stitches on the side of your head don't look pretty. What's the story, if you don't mind telling? No need if you don't want to, though. We all have our secrets."

I had some suspicions about it - I knew that kind of burn mark on skin all too well, caused by a plasma shot from a pistol - but didn't want to be too intrusive either, and so decided to leave the question in the room.
02 Jun 2023, 11:12pm
My eyes go wide and my pupils dilate a bit at the mention of the healing wound on my head. Without saying a word I lift my hand and make a finger gun shooting motion.

'I don't remember it but somehow my logbook seems to have it annotated. In fact it seems like most of my life from the past year is annotated as if written by an outside source. *sigh* I don't remember anything but everywhere I go I have this feeling I have visited before. People I see I wonder if I have met them and certain others I remember their faces but not who they are....' gestures to Kira as a way to show what I mean.

'Me being at that crater..... the reason I was there...... is almost the same as why one would fly straight towards a blackhole.... Curiosity killing the cat or something like that.'
02 Jun 2023, 11:28pm
I raised an eyebrow at what I'd just been told.

"You're not trying to say what I think you're saying?" Deep down, I knew the answer, both from what I was seeing, and because I'd been down that hole before. "That's not... alright, look, I'm maybe not the right person to say this, but that's not a good way to go about things. I know it, because I've been there already. More than once."

I paused, and took a deep breath, keeping my voice lower when I continued.

"Look, I get it. It seems so simple in that moment. A simple pull of the trigger, or a knife in the right place... and all your worries are gone. But now they're someone else's, if there is anyone left to care." I had to stop for a moment, figuring out what saying this brought up within me. "Only, in my case, there was no one left to care. The only person that would've mattered was gone for a few months already by then, and my family... well, if they'd still been alive, I'd have had no reason to care for them."

I decided to stop going into that. I doubted either of us particularly wanted to talk about this subject.

"Maybe this is a little deep for... effectively meeting for the first time, but consider if there's anyone who you would care about left if you're in that kind of... situation. If you can say yes about even one person, they're worth it."

I spotted an Azimuth advertisement in the corner of my eye in that moment, with the words 'Securing our future' underneath their company logo. It wasn't the first time I'd seen one, but they still filled me with the same disgust every time.

"Can you believe the audacity those guys have? They get an alien invasion armada to come knocking at our doorstep, and then claim to be doing stuff for our protection." I realized that maybe Silvia didn't recall that piece of history, and decided to be sure. "You do know what's going on out there, right?"
02 Jun 2023, 11:48pm
'Yes, but like I said I don't remember it. The trauma and stress that led to it........ gone..... except it's not? Like I can read about what happened and not feel anything other than utter confusion.'

My tone is unusually calm for someone who would be depressed. It's almost as if the emotion for the act is nonexistent. Letting a smile slip I continue.

'I'm not looking for sympathy but thank you. I look at my loss of memory as a blessing more so than a curse.'

I divert my attention to the advertisement and shake my head in disgust.

'Salvation started this mess and Aegis is only going to make things worse. They are like ants and we are the hornet that attempted to eradicate their queen. This is a hive/ colony response to a severe outside threat. Nothing and I mean nothing we do to retaliate aggressively will work out in our favor. It'll only piss em off more.... so yes I know what's going on here. Venus went to the front lines at the very start of all of this..... that's where my memory begins to fade.'

A look of sadness falls across my face as I reach over and take a sip of the drink I made. I sit staring into the glowing blue liquid seemingly trying to make sense of some form of grief.
02 Jun 2023, 11:56pm
As the cat videos are being scrolled through, Lillianna eavesdrops upon the conversation held between the two other women. Silently sighing as Azimuth - if not by directly name - came up.

The Artemis-clad woman leant backwards and looked with squinted, pensive cybernetic eyes towards Kira.

"By no fault of any one person was war started. We tried defending against a threat, and they broke through that defense. You can barely call the massacres a 'war', this is a slaughter induced by revenge. That is why they now have this so-called 'audacity' to claim to act in our defense. Because it is exactly so.

They simply underestimated their enemy, just as politicians have done forever and always. And we the common grunts, the expendables, pay. But now they scramble to keep face, because in this day and age, money is power and power is... corrupted."

"That all aside. You've got a weird air about you. Something I can't place. You're... interesting, if I have to be honest." Lilianna chuckled. "Both of you, really. The Amnesiac, and the Traumatised. Who would've guessed there were such interesting Pilots around."

"Anyhoo; If you are angry with how the alien invasion armada was sent to our doorstep, why not fight to keep them out?"
03 Jun 2023, 12:16am
I snap my gaze to the woman a fierce look in my eyes.

'Why would I fight something we provoked? Besides not exactly my cup of tea to fight alien life forms of any kind.'

Motions to then brushes off the elite xenobiology emblem on my Artemis suit.

'Being a xenobiologist I choose to not destroy alien life. Especially when we have much to learn about it or even from it. We are focusing on the wrong thing here. We need to capture one of them. Keep it alive and study it. Learn how they communicate. We have some of the most advanced AI history has ever seen and we use it for stupid things like making ourselves coffee in the morning, instead of using it to help us understand them.'
