General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Hehe, sometime I'm glad I'm not a thinking man"

"You know, it was a dastardly plan with filthy consequences, but I have to give it to those black-hats, they had a solid scam. They were a gang that somehow got political power, and when the Goids attacked, this gang took over and arranged the evacuation. The charity I work for came in with their ships, and cleared out the civilians, but the gang had gassed them all beforehand, so they're quiet and compliant. They seeded the civies with enough of the bad guys to take the ship and attacked once we had left the station"

"I mean, if I was flying for any other company, we'ed have been taken to a carrier owned by slavers, and lost forever. Lucky for me, the charity owner has had quite the life, and she never lets her fleet fly without on-board security, and an escort wing"

"All I really did was stop a few raiders from taking the bridge; it's the security personnel that saved the ship. I jumped off because I saw the MD piloting another evac-ship into the station. Couldn't warn her because the coms were disabled, so I had to do it in person dont'cha know?"

"That was the last exciting thing I've done in.. oh a good few months now. Looks like we're both on a break from action station doesn't it?"

*glug glug glug glug*

Listening to Creamy's latest story, I didn't even notice my coffee mug becoming terribly empty. Can't say I've been thirsty, but I'm always up to some tasty drinks.

"Oh, wow. Sounds like a close call. Yeah, I've heard some stories about Delaine's goons usurping power over several systems acting like 'you've had no choice anyway' when the Thargoid invasion began, but we both know where it goes, once they got their claws on something, they'll never let it go. Maybe those your slavers were a part of his occupational forces, or just a separate group trying to copycat the same methods. Can't say more, sadly, I'm still in the middle of processing the latest news. Glad to see you okay after that."

I shrugged, as, being busy with tasks on hand, I've been poorly informed about what was happening in more populated areas even before our comm cut-off.

"Anyway, piloting apart, I've also had a situation with some close-and-personal shooting people with a rifle. Can you imagine those Thargoid-worshipping morons trying to sabotage AX forces in a settlement, besieged by the Thargoids? And, ugh, they were totally clean 'legally'. Even tried to make me cooperate, capturing me and playing some dumb psychological games. Got a wrong woman, phah. Once my head was cleared, I put on my armour without any idents and patches, and torn their little hideout apart, exposing the evidence for the local security to rummage through."

"Hey. I've just realised... Never heard you, like, properly, playing that piano and singing something. I'm not exactly into culture, but, hm, why don't give it a go? Because I honestly think that latest crap was nowhere near 'proper listening'. So maybe, we could move to the counter, then another coffee for me, and a piano time for you?"

"What was her name again... Ve... Venus?"
06 Jun 2023, 12:58am
Meowers "What was her name again... Ve... Venus?"

Hearing the name I turn towards Meowers.

'Excuse me Willow I don't mean to be rude but that name.......'

Looking directly at Meowers I ask her about it.

'Excuse me miss... but that name was there a last name by chance? I really do not intend to be rude but uhm that was my wife's name.'

I dont recognize the woman nor the man she is speaking with. For someone to know that name would mean they had a run in with her.
06 Jun 2023, 1:54am
"Hm", I raised my eyebrow, turned in my chair and looked at the woman who was interested in the name. It was this slender lady with a long white hair, supposedly the owner of that fox-cat-like creature.

"Sorry can't say much. She didn't say her last name, or... I just can't remember it now. I've been in the hospital back then, a few months ago, and they gave me a couple of days to, uh, stretch my legs and fly around a bit, as a part of the recovery programme."

I closed my eyes, trying to remember the events of that day. Interesting though, I couldn't remember the date, just 'a few months ago somewhat', but I could recall the talk and what happened, more or less accurately.

"So, an Imperial woman, with that accent. Not heavy, but recognisable. I remember she was quite... Anxious, maybe. Told Creamy, and, by a coincidence, he was doing a Cocktail Challenge here that day", I nodded towards Creamy who sat next to me. "So... Told him to put my drinks on her tab after seeing my AXDF patches. She's been running evacs and her Cutter got badly damaged, according to what she said."

"So... What was next... She was wearing quite a scratched armour suit, and I noticed that. She replied, like, was stressed after the landing, forgot to change, all that... Then went away for a while and returned in fancy-looking Imperial garbs with tonnes of jewelry all over, and whatever. Tried to... I don't know, I'm bad with that, but did she try to flirt with me? Ordered me a coffee. We talked some pseudo-philosophical rubbish, she mentioned she had a wife, that 'silly girl obsessed by plants' who's been on a long exploration trip, her name was Silvia. Then... Well, things went shit way."

"That Venus girl ran away again, and returned back shortly in the same armour suit, with those Pioneer's child toy guns. Shouted something about a 'pay day' and there was also an explosion sound, somewhere in the distance, on the background... So I threw a table at her in order to stop the projectiles if she decides to shoot, and we, me and Creamy, ran to the emergency exit behind the bar. So... I guess that's all."
06 Jun 2023, 3:00am
My eyes go wide at the mention of my name. Hearing the events unfold I think back to when that could have been.

'Silvia? Th..... that's me. You met her just before.........'

I try to think back to what I read in my logs. There was nothing in them about those events so I am forced to believe what was being said.

'That's definitely like Venus. Constantly getting herself into trouble.....'

I let out a soft sigh.

'I think you may have met her at the wrong time..... she used to be sweet and kind. That is until the empire turned their backs on her. Stripped her of her ranks and titles. Took away her land and believed a cold blooded killer over her. No that..... I remember that.'

Tears form in my eyes as I remember watching the woman I love driven to madness and hatred.

'I am sorry you met her in such a state.'

Turning to look at the blonde haired man a puzzled look grows on my face.

'Is your name truly Creamy? What a strange name indeed. Come join us please.'

I look to Kira.

'If you'd like to join I don't mind..... Willow do you have any objections. Come now let's all enjoy some drinks, food and good company.'
06 Jun 2023, 3:18am
I took a few steps back, not feeling too fond of turning it into a - by my definition - group gathering, and crossed my arms.

Five people, me included in that number, when one of them was a complete stranger and the other three were not far from it, was taking my social capabilities to their limit, and it reflected in my facial expression as well.

Things were not helped by me already feeling awkward in Willow’s presence alone, still hoping she hadn’t recognized too much of me under the hood and black suit.

And that was without mentioning my concern about Creamy slipping up and blurting out my name.

"Its is, and I'm the third man in my family to take it; I can assure you my parents did not approve. A kind invitation Silvia, thank you, but the lady has requested my presence at the piano" said Creamy standing with a short bow to Meowers before cracking his knuckles.

Devon was coming back with a pair of plates on a tray, and he'd stopped to place another big cup of coffee on it too. One of the stakes had been cooked so much, Creamy would call ruined, but he never judged other peoples taste.

"Good man" said Creamy impressed that the staff was taking the initiative to please the customer after getting her order wrong. He picked up his plate and took it to the stage, leaving on top of the piano.

Cutting a bit of meat to chew on while he contemplated what to sing, Creamy took an electric guitar from its stand, moved the mixer deck where he could reach it and sat on the piano stool strumming a few random bars.

It was a mixed crowd to play for. Silvia, being a singer/player herself would apricate anything that took some skill and talent to perform. Willow wore her taste like a uniform, so maybe something with a menacing guitar all the way through?

The Brandy drinker with purple hair was defiantly and anything goes type, so there was no help there, and Meowers had lightened up so much, she was practically a new person. The old Meowers would enjoy the sound of chattering gun-fire over music. That left Kira, sullen and broody, much like Willow really, so he was back to deep tones on the guitar.

His hands were already playing Take Me to Church, a number Creamy enjoyed, but as Meowers had asked him to paly, totally inappropriate. Inspiration struck, causing Creamy to fiddle with the mixing deck and have the computer play the part of all the instruments Creamy didn't have covered.

He started on the guitar deep and sullen, and the intro gave Creamy a chance to enjoy another bite of stake. The song was about a place in New Orleans, and Creamy sung in a deep gruff, but clean voice. Soon the computer took over the guitar, and Creamy was sat in front of the piano belting out House of the Rising Sun with a resonance that echoed in the chest of anyone near by.

"Yeah... Sorry, can't remember more", I addressed to Silvia, getting up from my chair and placing a hand on my chest in an apologising sign. "Maybe it's 'your' Venus, maybe not. Maybe you could name some facial features or whatever... Or, maybe the security footage, if still intact, could provide you with more."

Putting my plate with steak and another coffee mug in front of me, I sat at the bar, and then the music started playing. I've already had a fork and a knife in my hands, ready to enjoy my first slice of that fresh delicious meat, but the music I heard made me slowly stop and close my eyes.

"Ow... Ow, wow, you've got it right, I totally like a rock guitar", quietly murmuring, I finished slicing the steak and relaxed on the bar stool, leaning back a little and letting the music flow freely through my body. Yeah, Marshmallow's onboard music system was in use constantly, giving my ears some good old-school rock guitar treats every time I was in the cockpit, maybe more energetic than the song Creamy was playing, but, nonetheless, listening to that being performed by an actual person, live, in the bar, and having a fresh steak to enjoy, feels more... Right. Like, how that music meant to be listened to.

So, I sat at the bar with my eyes lazily half-closed, slightly rocking side to side, with a fork in my hand, and... Totally enjoyed the moment.

Cass spins the barstool they’re sat upon, half a glass of brandy still in their hand, stopping themselves when they face the area that the loud music is emitted, listening. It wasn’t particularly their style of music, but the Lass found it alright. Bit loud for their liking. But alright.

'It's quite alright dear. I know Venus. The way you described her is pretty spot on for her standard dress. *sigh*'

I turn back to face Willow. Her pale skin and dark hair entrancing. Melli perks up at the sound of the music and jumps out of Willow's lap and runs to the stage. She jumps up onto to the piano and takes a seat staring at Creamy and begins to sway to the music.

'If you'd like to join I don't mind..... Willow do you have any objections. Come now let's all enjoy some drinks, food and good company.'

"Eh, what?" ejected Willow startled by a direct question "Objections? To what?" She felt like she had missed a big chuck of what was happening around her.

Some of it was Melli, the fluff-bug was so relaxing to pet, Willow had got lost in her wine playing with the animal's coat. The live music didn't help either. It wasn't the type of music she liked, but the tune was good, and the song's story was some kind of warning, so that landed. The singer had a good, powerful voice too. Live music didn't happen in Willows life much, and a talented voice, in person was something Willow felt like she had never experienced.

Sometimes her sisters would bring their boyfriends around, and all the girls would give the guy marks out of ten when they left. The good-looking blond guy could sing, and play more than one instrument; he always looked like he'd just stepped out of makeup for a holo, and he had the body of an action star. He would score high in the Thorn household.

Willow blushed when she realized she had been watching the man's face since she answered Silvia. Again she was glad the alabaster makeup covered almost everything.

"So er, like, what did you say? Melli is just so distracting you know? I was a million light years away. Sorry"
06 Jun 2023, 8:23pm
I turn back to Willow and just smile.

'Oh it's quite alright dear. Melli has this hypnotizing charm about her. I have found myself entranced a few too many times while cruising in a system and over shooting my target by several thousand light seconds.'

'Soo how is it that someone working as a station mechanic came to be entranced by scars?'

I watch Melli sway to the music. Her beautiful white coat shimmering in the stage light. She taps her feet in a happy dance sort of way as the music carries her away. She starts to wag her tail and before she can control herself finds herself jumping around on top of the piano. Seeing this I bolt over to the stage and scoop Melli up to prevent any damage.

'Little miss. You must be careful with these things. Come entrance our wonderfully beautiful friend here and spread some of that sweetness around.'

I hold Melli on her back in one arm and tickle her stomach walking back to our seat. Melli let's out a little squeaking chatter and play bites at my fingers. I laugh a little and place her back on Willow's lap. Melli runs up her chest and sits on her right shoulder and nuzzle rubs her head against the top of Willow's while wrapping her tail around her neck like a scarf.

'You look good in white Willow.'

A squirrel sat its self in front of Creamy dangerously close to his stake, and its little paws threatened to interfere with the stage control deck. Creamy wasn't a very clever man, but that meant there were no thoughts getting between his instincts, and acting on them. Instinctively, Creamy didn't trust this thing on the piano one bit. Anything that cute was hiding something, and Creamy felt what this thing was hiding would be worse than teeth and claws,

He didn't want to harm it because he is a peaceful man. He wishes no harm to anyone, or anything, but he did want this thing much further away from his face.

Still, being a professional Creamy didn't let his feeling show, and he didn't let it get in the way of the performance. It was only a short number anyway, and Creamy very much enjoyed a song that really let him sing.

I poked around the corner at hearing Willow ask about Silvia's answer to my question about joining in on the conversation, still outside the bar, and made a gesture saying that it was about me. My ears had gotten used to the music a little more, but I didn't bother heading back in just yet, and waited. Even if Willow hadn't recognized me, I doubted that my attire particularly inspired confidence.
