General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I shrugged a little, hearing about the artifact.

"Can't say for sure. Never seen something like that before. But, if you ask me about 'was it greenish or electric-blue', I'd say both. Maybe a hybrid of sorts. I don't know, had no time to take a closer look. And I'm a pilot, not a scientist."

And then, seeing that woman making a pause in her questions and smiling, I made another sip of warm, tasty coffee, with my eyes closing and opening again in a slow blink, and added, "It was a long time ago. And, here and now, I'd like to think about the moment. Me having this wonderful drink. Relaxing. Enjoying the taste. Don't you think... that life might change for the better if we start paying attention to moments like that? To the thoughts they awake in us?"

As his only other serious customer was still absorbed in his reading, Creamy wondered over to the stage and changed the settings on the keyboard. He preferred a real piano for the tune he was going to play, but he could coax the atmosphere he was trying to create out of this electronic instrument.

He played a few soft bars and hummed along in to the microphone to check the sound levels. He’d set them earlier, but he always double-checked before playing. Satisfied everything was where it needed to be, Creamy started to play a silky melody that gently drifted around the bar.

His selected singing voice was French, of course, delivered in a smooth baritone; and the song was a soft but upbeat serenade about sharing a beautiful moon-lit lowcal with a special person. It was one of Creamys’ favourites from his days at the Academy. It was a classic then, but he felt it was a timeless classic that suited the moment.

MeowersDon't you think... that life might change for the better if we start paying attention to moments like that? To the thoughts they awake in us?"

"To live in the here and now, allowing the moment to spark distant memories. For some that that may be easier than others." I say as the slow blinks and sips from this woman begin to slowly melt the memories of the past becoming present.

I finish off my beverage and proceed behind the bar looking at all the drinks. I decide on a cup of coffee. I proceed to the espresso machine at the opposite end of the bar. While the espresso is brewing I gather some vanilla syrup and line the bottom of two mugs. I grab some milk from the under bar fridge and froth enough for two drinks. As soon as the espresso finishes brewing I pour it through the top of the foam ensuring to be careful not to over fill the drinks. I finish the drink of by squeezing some caramel syrup around the inside of the rim of the mugs and make an Imperial emblem on one and for the other I pause for a moment...... before making a flower design with caramel for the other.

I grab 2 cofee spoons and return to the table with the drinks and present meowers her caramel macchiato with a little Carmel flower on top.

"I thought maybe you'd like this. It's one of my favorite drinks." I say in a gentle tone taking one of the coffee spoons and gently mixing everything together before taking a sip closing my eyes and listening to the melody being played by Creamy

...It felt like the time itself became slower. Slower, sweeter, enveloping. When I opened my eyes, finishing the first mug, made by Creamy, I saw another cup of fresh coffee on the table right next to me.

"Ow. That's... amazing. Thank you", I said, enjoying my own calm voice, which returned to me not too long ago, and nodded in a sign of gratitude once again.

I took a cup with both my hands and raised it the same way, bringing it to the face. Inhaling the soothing aroma of vanilla and caramel, another beautiful thing that I like much, I couldn't help but close my eyes once more.

"A wonderful drink. Brought to me by a total stranger. Makes me smile now. And, you... You smiled too, looking at me. It means, you have something that can make you smile...", I made a first sip of coffee from the cup, with eyes closed. "And you can remember it, you can think of it."

Opening my eyes and looking at the woman in front of me, I continued:

"That's why we definitely win. Some day. Some year. We have things that make us smile happily. We can dream. Both us, and them, know that sometimes we must give our lives up. But... We can find a reason to keep living. In things that makes us smile."

There were strict rules about not letting customers behind the bar, but Creamy wasn’t a strict rules kind of guy; besides, he could read body language as clearly as most people read words, and he wasn’t about to stop a woman on a mission.

He continued playing; singing his French serenade, having not even glanced in the direction of Ina and Venus. Apparently, Creamy forgot a few French phrases while he was singing, but flawlessly inserted their English translation.

The French for ‘her hand in mine’ eluded Creamy for a moment, as did the translation for ‘the warmth of my lover's arms’. And how he managed to forget the French words for ‘soft touching of our lips’ Creamy would never understand.

"I do indeed have something to smile about. You remind me of my wife Silvia. Thankfully enough she is out on a research expedition for the next few months in the Norma Arm. Silly woman is obsessed with fungus." I say eyes still closed, picturing her cute almost elven like appearance with her cute round thin framed glasses.

"What about you do you have anyone.... anything?"

I take another sip of my drink before opening my eyes to look at the woman

"Ow. That's... beautiful. I'm happy she's... Somewhere in much safer place. Hah, love that irony... Deep space became a safe place", I even chuckled a little at the last words. Sad, but true. However, no matter how sad, we had no other 'true' at the moment. "And, exploring the space... Can't say I'm a fan. But there's... something. In it. That attract people."

I took another sip of coffee and continued, with a deep inhale. Lighting up a cigarette before speaking those words out.

"Never thought I'll be talking about relationships... But, I don't think it can hurt. Sooo... Maybe I have. Maybe not", I shrugged, "Maybe we're at the very beginning. Maybe it's a classic 'beginning of an end'. Who knows. We met at a strange time, and there's... Hell of a distance. But... I'm grateful to her for every moment. And for every word. She wants to build her own life, and I want her to have it. My own role in it is... a secondary concern for me."

Letting out a long puff of smoke to the side, I... smiled too.
27 Dec 2022, 12:05am
That pause in the conversation made me notice the music and the singing on the background. Hm. I knew Creamy had some vocal skills, but I never thought he was also familiar with music instruments. I caught myself slowly tilting my head left and right, following the melody, gazing at my coffee cup, relaxed.

I've always valued moments of calmness, those minutes when I could slow my thoughts down and just... be. And, be it a second, an hour, a day, I constantly learned to store them in my memory, to protect them from the other things that live in my head. I needed them. I needed to recall them. Sometimes, it was essential.
27 Dec 2022, 12:21am
"Such is the way of life dear. Sometimes you are just a particle floating in the ever expanding universe." I say a somber tone.

I finish off my cup of coffee. I look back to the woman

"Well dear this has been a treat but I do believe I must be going. I must check in on my ships repairs. Maybe next time we meet things will be a bit more....... exciting." With that I proceed to the bar to close out my tab.

I grab a pen and a slip of paper and write

'The way the world is made. The truth is all around you, plain to behold. The night is dark and full of terrors, the day bright and beautiful and full of hope. One is black, the other white. There is ice and there is fire. Hate and love. Bitter and sweet. Male and female. Pain and pleasure. Winter and summer. Evil and good. Death and life. Everywhere, opposites. Everywhere, the war.'

I pin the note on the doorway and proceed out of the bar pausing for a moment to light a cigarette. I head down to the docks pad 02 where my imperial cutter has been for the past couple of days.

When I was thinking about a fragility of calmness, I meant something like that. Some people just don't want to keep stuff in peace, some people want to show off, and some people are just arrogant and overconfident. Maybe even stupid. Not quite the time to run IQ tests though...

So, this deserves a quick fact-check. What I saw in front of me was an aggressive person, wearing a Dominator suit, armed with Intimidator plasma shotgun and Executioner rifle without any non-core functionality upgrades visible. Thing is, when the Odyssey Convention was signed, all personal weapons except stuff you can get at the Pioneer Supplies monopolist were banned and deemed illegal. Yeah, I still had my oldschool heavy plasma rifle, but it was kept in Marshmallow's cockpit. Aaaaand... The stuff those Pioneer Supplies could provide you with is made of pure cringe and stupidity. That 'sniper' rifle which shoots slow-moving and clearly visible projectiles that you can evade on foot? 'Assault' rifle that has troubles with hitting elephant's arse from fifty metres? Shotgun is still a shotgun though, but whatever kind of plasma rounds it shoots, they lack any penetration abilities. Those 'weapons' even lack belts, which could allow you to send a quick burst from the hip at least, not to mention other accessibility assistances; they were literally magnetically glued to the back of your suit. Whoever is responsible for making these toys for grown up kids, know nothing about firearm functionality and design. Yeah, they look nasty, but only until you see the specs or try to use them. Those guns are a joke.

What happened next, took just a second. I put both my hands under the table and literally jumped out of the seat, sending the table flying to the opponent. A simple plastic table... That could easily disperse the first shotgun round before ceasing to be a 'table'. And my personal shields were more than enough against the second, which I anticipated. 'Sniper' rifle? That ridiculous piece of crap will take more time to deploy and aim, not to mention the slow projectile.

I had no time and no chance to see what was happening behind me; I stormed towards the bar counter and dived behind it. Still a piece of plastic and metal, but it could soak more shots than the table, of course.

"Cream. Open the emergency exit and activate the turrets. Time to get out of here before the crap gets flushed away."

Never one to lack in a call to action, Creamy grabbed the man STILL reading his pad and pulled him over the counter, and then hit the Panic Room alarm.

Instantly, heavy shutters turned the bar into a secure vault; The Galactic had dealt with nutters on many occasions. Outside, Auto-Turrets would target anyone deploying a weapon while security evacuated civilians and closed in on the bar and all its exits. Creamy checked his guests were in one piece before brushing himself off.

"Well, she'll be loosing her family title and lands, I can assure you of that. The Princess doesn't tolerate that sort of person holding a position of importance"

Creamy picked up the pad-man as he seemed to have been knocked out on his way over the bar.

"This way to the security station, Mrs Muir" said Creamy, opening the tunnel to security "Have I told you how nice it is to see you again?" said Creamy with a warm smile after locking the door behind them and wondering off down the roomy tunnel.

"Sure", I agreed. "And, well, you may want to look at this..."

I ran through a list of latest contacts on my communicator screen while we walked. Found that lady. Of course. Standard-issue PDA devices shared some basic info with devices found in the direct vicinity. Opened her ID card.

Her on-foot combat rank line was showing "Defenceless".
27 Dec 2022, 11:54am
Creamy shrugged, pushing the man over his shoulder in his line of sight for a moment.

"All bluster and no substance; far too common"

They walked on, getting close to the security station. They could hear the officer's radio chatter; they had footage of a pointless and needlessly violent attack against staff. Creamy felt ashamed he was even mildly associated with someone like that.

"You know, since I've met you, I hardly ever get to kiss the girl, and I'm yet to finish a set. Tell me, are there any nice young ladies on your outfit? Maybe I could go entertain the troops between evacuation runs"

"Perhaps that way I'll get through more than one damn song"
27 Dec 2022, 5:35pm
As the patrons scramble I am struck by the table. Having been caught off guard I stagger a bit when I look up I see the two had gone. It seems my only ticket off this station just ran off as well.

"Damn looks as though I'm done for. Bah who cares I don't have a title anyhow. F***k! Doesn't mean Silvia deserves to be alone."

I throw down my weapons and strip off as much of my armor as possible in hopes that I could blend into the crowd. I need to find a way off this station and quickly. Gods this is going to suck. Being sneaky, outside of current events was easy for me. I dart out of the bar ad the shutters and doors slam shut, sticking close to the walls so as to not trigger the auto turrets.

I make my way out of the entertainment district grabbing bits of clothing to hide my identity. I needed to plan things very very carefully if I was going to survive this. I wouldn't ever be able to return to here at least not while I had a target on my head I needed to get to an interstellar factor to clear the bounty and my name.

*continued in the citi gateway.
