General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Standing with my feet shoulder-width apart and pointing the rifle at the door, I saw Silvia entering the bar.

"Silvia... Heck! I'm glad you're fine, but please, take the damn cove... Ow!", and then her pet landed on my shoulder. Obviously, I knew it wasn't able to understand human speech, but what else could I do, rather than talking to it? I didn't want it to put its paws, or tail, or any other body parts in front of my eyes or the rifle barrel. "You little fluffball, please... Things may get rough."

Surprisingly, the creature really did jump off my shoulder and hide somewhere out of my sight after that. So, seeing Vodan showing his shotguns, I proceeded with whatever talking my mind managed to produce.

"Fine! Nice and easy, both guns on the floor! And your dagger too! You're not the only nutter with a gun now!"

And still, I was a bit worried for Silvia. She's just out of the medical, and, if they both start fighting, I won't be able to do any good at all since I don't want to hit her accidentally.

Guns guns guns. Creamy didn't do guns, and really didn't enjoy it when they came into play. What was worse, these guns were being waved about because of him.

What he wanted to do was stand by the doorway to disarm the aggressor, and stop any other morons walking through a door with about a hundred loaded rounds ready to fly through it. However, this wasn't his show, so he did his best to stay out the way, but ready in case he could help.

At this point it seemed like near everyone else had some form of weaponry. Cass had, none. Which was surprising for anyone who ever met a Minutebeast. The, closest current thing to a weapon was a pencil in their pocket, and that wasn’t very useful against plasma weapons, obviously.

Why, hadn’t they brought at least something?
‘I wont need a weapon! Should be safe here’ came to their memory. Goodness, sober Cass was not thinking straight when they docked.

Meowers
"Fine! Nice and easy, both guns on the floor! And your dagger too! You're not the only nutter with a gun now!"

"Moor mar mer oh-me mutma miv ma mar narrr" mocked Vodane in a childish voice parroting what Meowers had just said from the safety of the cover.

"Yeah yeah yeah" He undid his belt and gently swung it, with the guns and a pair of micro-grenades and plenty of cartridges in its many pouches and holsters into the room.

He was about to step in with his hands up and remembered his punch daggers.

"Hang on, I need to take my coat off to undo the punch daggers. Don't fuckin shoot your compensator, I'm cooperating"

Swinging the strappy contraptions around the frame, Vodan slumped his great coat over his shoulder and put his hands up, reviling himself to the bar again.

I lower my pistol to the ready position and Melli relaxes a bit keeping a very watchful eye on Vodan. As what I hope is the last bit of weaponry hits the ground I holster my pistol.

'Alright nice and easy now. Melli seasamh síos.'

I'm at a disadvantage size wise against everyone in the room but with at least Meowers and Creamy, hopefully on my side, I might stand a chance. I grab a glass of water and another one full of just ice. Feeling somewhat weak I walk over and take a seat near to Cass.

'You ok? Melli come here.'

The creature hops down off the bar top and scurries over to my side. She lays down attempting to make herself as small of a target as possible. All while keeping Vodan in sight.

“Oh! Yea. Fine, thanks for askin’! Just. Does this always happen? I mean, every five minutes there’s some sort o’ big thing. First you collapin’ -hope you’re feeling better- and now /this/“ a gesture to the room in general. “Just a bit much, really.”

'From my understanding it happens quite frequently. When I took up the vacant position for bartender I was given a run down on recent events and well while it's typically calm and peaceful things tend to just....'

Motions around the room as if to say welcome to Citi Gateway. I take a long slow sip of my water and pluck an ice cube out from the other glass and pop it into my mouth. I started to feel warm again but didn't really want to raise any alarms, and I certainly wasn't wanting to go back to the hospital.

I look Cass over carefully and pull out a small concealed blade still in its sheath and hand it over to her. In a lowered voice I speak to Cass.

'I don't see any weapons on or around you. Here take this. It's not much but if you can get the drop on someone, it'll be better than nothing.'

“Must just be a weird hotspot for people.” A shrug

'I don't see any weapons on or around you. Here take this. It's not much but if you can get the drop on someone, it'll be better than nothing.'

Cass too, lowers their voice. “You certain? Thank you.” Cass takes the blade, and sticks it in their pocket. Luckily with the sheath on.
Then, they turn their attention to Melli. “I’d. like to ask about your pet over there, if you don’t mind. Looks like a fox but, not quite. Am. I making sense?”
11 Jun 2023, 10:19am
Strangecassowary“You certain? Thank you.”

'Yes I don't expect this to go south at this point but anything is possible.'

Strangecassowary“I’d. like to ask about your pet over there, if you don’t mind. Looks like a fox but, not quite. Am. I making sense?”

'Who? Melli? You'd be correct in that assumption. She is a hybrid of sorts. Mix between Arctic fox and a creature about the size of a coyote. They don't have an official name yet but I call them a Vulptex. Terrifyingly vicious if they feel threatened.'

I tap Melli on the rump lightly with my foot to break her attention from Vodan.

'Melli come sit up here. Let this woman get a good look at you.'

A bit of excited chatter comes from Melli almost as if she enjoys the attention.

Yes Yes! That means pets!

She hops up on the table and sits in a very prideful manor. She tries to present herself in as cute of a way as possible so as to get a much attention as she can from the woman with purple hair.

While that is happening I divert my gaze over to Creamy, Meowers and Vodan. If something happens I want to be able to react accordingly. I grab another cube of ice and rub it on the back of my neck to help cool me off. I begin to think I should have gone and grabbed my armor so it could at least help regulate my body temps but for now the ice seems to help. I pop another piece of ice into my mouth and let it melt.

“Aw, well that’s adorable.” Cass begins to gently stroke Melli. “Didn’t realise different terrestrial beings were able to hybridise.” They offhandedly mentioned.

VodanSwinging the strappy contraptions around the frame, Vodan slumped his great coat over his shoulder and put his hands up, reviling himself to the bar again.
"Okay. Now you sit down and tell us everything you know about Vengerfield's actions, his forces and whatever", I said to Vodan with my voice still loud, but not to a shouting level. "You're not getting Creamy today."

Then, still keeping my eyes on, and rifle pointed at, Vodan, I shouted:

"Cream! He's here and all yours! Ask him whatever you want!"

"I genuinely recommend you tell us everything. This might also help you, with getting off the hook", I addressed to Vodan again. "From what I know, nobody here wants you dead. Your luck. Try not to run out of it."

And, saying that, I continued with my 'standing still and pointing a loaded weapon at a dangerous man' thing, noticing that people in the bar started chattering more relaxedly, and Melli, that was the name of the creature, was in the spotlight now. Like we haven't had an armed thug waving shotguns a few minutes ago, and that standoff now. People are strange. Another mental note of people being strange on top of hundreds of these I've had already.
11 Jun 2023, 12:40pm
"No good asking him, he's an idiot" Said Vodan sitting down, having the view down the long long barrel of Meowers comfort zone.

"That bubblehead probably doesn't even know how I am, and I've been up close and personal with him more times than most girls I've fucked"

"Let me give you the short version. This arse-wipe" he said pointing at Creamy "Stopped being careful with his identity, and now the master has found him. Vengerfield isn't interested in Creamy, he wants to know about his ex, Doctor Neyrs"

Vodan chacked the glasses close by looking for something to drink. His mouth was getting quite dry thanks to the big gun.

"Creamys problem is, he doesn't know where she is. I know because I've been following him on and off for the best part of two years, and he's not so much as said her name"

"So, after you" Vodan pointed an accusatory finger at Meowers "and JB took this guy out from under my nose, Vengerfield put me on his shit-list too. But there is light at the end of this tunnel. I've got a way to prove Creamy doesn't know anything about Neyrs, and if I bring him in, I'll get off the master's shit-list. I have a good chance of keeping this worthless dickhead alive, and I may even get my position back"

"The sticky point is, this jack-ass doing his run-rabbit number. Trust me, the master has the jump points in every system around here watched, and when his carriers turn up, he'll have Creamy, or he'll take down what's left of this station until someone turns him in"
11 Jun 2023, 1:19pm
I nodded after every Vodan's sentence, but things he said didn't make me change my mind at all.

"I'm still dead certain you're expendable here. So that master of yours let you chase Creamy for months and years, keeping an eye on you, to move his forces in after you capture the chap. My take is, if he did really want to take you off that shit-list, he'd give you an opportunity to prove you're a good boi", these last words were said as if I was talking to a dog, "a long time ago. But no, he went doing his master things, knowing you're too eager to exonerate yourself after pooping on the carpet, so you're not going to disappear. And also you honestly believe he's almighty, because he put that belief into your mind."

"No, there are too many arseholes without a moral compass in this galaxy, and replacing you is way easier than paying you and whatever. Put down one lap dog, pick up another. Maybe you're replaced already, but you've been too busy chasing Creamy to realise that."

"Hey, Cream, come in already, we should do something with him anyway!"
11 Jun 2023, 1:53pm
Strangecassowary“Aw, well that’s adorable.” Cass begins to gently stroke Melli. “Didn’t realise different terrestrial beings were able to hybridise.”

'Don't let her out of your sight please. She is extremely valuable. But yes they can hybridize very rare but it is possible. Earth has several of its own.'

Vodan"The sticky point is, this jack-ass doing his run-rabbit number. Trust me, the master has the jump points in every system around here watched, and when his carriers turn up, he'll have Creamy, or he'll take down what's left of this station until someone turns him in"

Hearing this I stand from my seat grabbing another cube of ice and placing it on my neck. I remove my jacket and place it on the table. Melli scoops it under her and makes a "nest". I proceed cautiously, now feeling my body temp begin to drop back down, and place myself between Vodan and his weapons near the exit.

'Look hear laddie, what's the likelihood we could take down your master? I've dealt with pirates and gone toe to toe with military brats. If you want a real way out I'm willing to help you rid yourself of him for good. Guy sounds like a right dick with how you talk about him.'
11 Jun 2023, 1:58pm
"Hey, Silvia...", I nodded towards the rifle that I held pointed at Vodan. "I have only one mag to get out of here. There are lots of them on my ship, but it's in the docks. By the way, nice haircut."
