Elite roleplay: The galactic bar

On the back of the bar on various shelves, from all over the galaxy, the fines and rarest ales preside. next to the impressive collection are several screens that can usually be seen playing adverts or the CQC championships.

It is the most prominent choice for meeting up with other pilots to discuss business discreetly, whatever they may be...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Continued From The Docks

Entering the Bar, I saw Kasumi sitting and scrolling the datapad; and she was, expectedly, looking not quite happy. So I approached slowly, and, standing next to her, said:

"Um. Hello."

I sat across the table relaxedly and thought it'd be better not to ask anything right away.
06 Aug 2023, 7:25am
The reports I was reading on this new Thargoid thing were almost exactly the same as what I had witnessed. Interdicted at varying distances to the Maelstrom even in human-controlled systems, with pretty much all vessels reporting either escape pods or passengers in their ship, or one of those disgusting ‘commodity’ items that involved handling humans, while no other cargo item was paid any attention to.

They were the same - in all but one aspect. None of their pilots made any mention toward their ships getting shut down entirely, or the FSD reboot missile causing thruster problems, nor that whatever entered their ship made attempts to enter the cockpit or bridge. As if I had been targeted directly.

It still told me enough, in that this was not a unique occurrence, making me shake my head.

“And so begins the great harvest of humanity.”

I sighed, eyes closed, after making that statement, then needed all my mental fortitude to not jump out of my seat and hit the ceiling when Meowers suddenly spoke to me. I hadn’t noticed her approaching, and she would definitely have been within listening distance. But I didn’t know whether I could talk about what I had just been through, despite every fiber of my body practically screaming at me to.

"Ow. Ow. Sorry," seeing Kasumi twitching even if I tried to speak softly, I raised my hands on the chest level, showing her my open palms. "Thought you saw me..." then, looking at her face, I realised. She's been there. "Yeah... Now all that shit gets even more fuel", I said quietly, but in pretty pessimistic tone.

"Glad to see you here though. If you have something to say, don't hold back, I'm listening. Otherwise... We might talk about something else, for a distraction. Or just sit and try to calm down."

Putting the ordering terminal to use again, I ordered a big cup of black iced tea.

"Guess we're going to see another shitstorm..." I added, none less pessimistic.
06 Aug 2023, 9:09am
I didn’t know what to say, or where to start. Whether it was the deeply unnerving experience of the Dedicant’s records, or my own ship turning into a literal horror show.

“I… I was …”

Only those few stuttering words came out, then I heard a muffled, deep clang from somewhere within the station, far too reminiscent of what I had heard before going through what felt like hell, far too soon, and it set me off.

A nerve - figuratively - snapped somewhere, and whichever instinctual part of my brain was acting caused me to quickly abandon the table, nearly throwing it over as I stumbled over myself, crawling into a corner, unable to control my actions. I curled up there in a fetal position, rocking back and forth, not a single thought spared to how this had to look to external observers.
06 Aug 2023, 9:42am
"Damn it..." I whispered.

Such reactions were well known to me. I'd say, I knew them way better than a person normally should. Immediately, I added a bottle of fresh cool water to my order and stood up slowly. Keeping my movements smooth and even, I walked to the corner and sat next to Kasumi, on the floor, equally paying zero attention to how it may look to people around us.

"Kasumi," I spoke quietly, "You aren't there. You're in the bar, with me. Galactic Bar, in the Inara system. A few minutes ago you sent me a message and I came to see you here. Here, look..." I took my communicator and placed it on the floor nearby, with her message open. "They aren't here too. Look around, you're in the bar."

"Breathe slowly and deeply. See me? I'm calm, they aren't here. It's the bar. Come on, breathe in, wait, breathe out," I moved closer and slowly took her hand. "Raise your head, please. Look at me. Look at things around you."

I let out a quiet long sigh, hoping all this might help. The pills I gave her yesterday were useful for these moments too, but obviously, they were on the ship, and she shouldn't be anywhere near ships right now, especially hers. Raising my hand, I signalled the bartender to bring the water here.
06 Aug 2023, 10:31am
“They’re going to find me… they’re going to find me… oh god, they’re going to find me!”

The quiet whispers came out of my mouth as I felt almost dissociated from reality, brought back to the dark corridors of a ship where I had been hunted by a Thargoid. The soft touch of a hand larger than mine, and soothing words of which I only actively registered the tone, pulled me out of it slightly. I looked up ever so slightly, a concerned, fearful look in my eyes.

“I don’t feel like I left.”

My gaze went back to the floor, unwilling to look up any further than it had, or continue to.
06 Aug 2023, 11:16am
A bar worker, with a bottle of water in her hand, tried to reach us as quick as possible, but I gestured her to be slow and quiet. She reached us and handed me the bottle.

"Please, ma'am, turn off the live transmissions of whatever is on your screens now, even if it's kid cartoons. For a few minutes. In this case," I spoke quietly and nodded towards Kasumi, "You don't want to see any emergency broadcasts."

"Here... Take this. Even a little. Might help," I opened the bottle and placed it on the floor near Kasumi. "See? She gave you a water bottle. We're in the bar now. You left that place several hours ago. We're in Inara now. You left that place..." I repeated two last sentences several times.

"Remember who I am. I know where they are. I know how to fight them. I'm not fighting now, I'm with you. They aren't there," repeated a couple of times again. Slow speech and simple phrases are your best friends in a situation like that. Another helpful thing is trying to force the mind to believe you aren't there, by bombarding it with facts.

"You're in the bar. Tables, plates, glasses, visitors and personnel. Look at them. Please. Try to. They're still doing their bar things. You're in the bar, you aren't there."

Crap. If only I had some of those tranquiliser pills on me. Life loves a good irony, just a few months back doc told me to keep them on the ship or at home, close, but out of quick direct reach, and use my own mind resources to fight the bad stuff, considering me ready for that. I sat closer so that she could feel it physically.

"I'm here. I fight them. But right now I'm here, and they aren't. You're safe here. They aren't going..." and that was quite a challenge, as I had to find a perfect phrase in order not to disturb her memories, both of the recent events and the past things. Even 'aren't going to find us here' wasn't safe to say, as it was a reference to 'them finding us', thus 'finding her'. 'Appear here'? Points to them appearing nearby. 'Last long against me'? Unethical and a stupid showoff, even if pretty realistic, phah. Though... Yeah. That was a clue. "They aren't going to last long near this station. This isn't a ship. We aren't there. We're in Inara."
06 Aug 2023, 12:47pm
“No… no… they’re not… I wasn’t …”

No coherent thoughts seemed to come out of my brain, and I wasn’t sure I appreciated close physical contact with someone I had just met the previous day. My hands, trembling badly, moved toward the bottle of water, eyes fixated on it, and only it. It was the only object they didn’t refuse to look at, but I couldn’t get any kind of steady grip on it, trying to avoid spills, so I left it standing there.

“I was… I was near the Dedicant. That stupid… the s-ship of those stupid Far God… people… listened to its logs. H-how they were t-taken…”

I swallowed, putting both hands around the bottle, as if it provided some kind of anchor to hold me.

“I searched for those… new Thargoid ships. T-they… collect things… pods… people.” The memory of the sounds they made sent a shiver through my body, which was hardly visible due to how agitated it already was. “I l-left… got a ship to… to evacuate some… people. Wounded, passengers. I w-was nearly there, and t-then… they… they came. Attacked. Stopped me… god, they were on the ship with me! They took everyone! They wanted me!”

The cat was out of the bag now, but I couldn’t continue talking. Instead, I just played two of the Dedicant’s logs back, the most disturbing ones to me, and what audio my wrist computer had recorded, exactly mirroring the sounds and screeches of the Thargoids on the megaship as they roamed its halls.

OOC - both links timestamped, but no embeds because that apparently just breaks it. Figured I would include these for clarity. And yes, you can in fact hear some Thargoid screeching in the second of Sophie's logs if you listen very closely after the door breaks down.

I felt her entire body shivering. Damn. Though, she was able to talk and tell me what had happened. Not that I needed it exactly, having things figured out by myself, but that was a sign of acute post-traumatic stress spike fading away finally.

"Thank you. For telling me and for letting me stay with you now," I looked at her wrist computer and exhaled quietly when the playback stopped. Playing these now wasn't exactly what she needed, but that was the only way for her to continue telling the whole story, and I couldn't blame her.

"You made it back. And..." I moved again, to sit in front of Kasumi, and looked into her eyes. "They didn't want you. You aren't to blame. They target ships randomly. They didn't want to have you specifically. They aren't searching for you. Believe me, please. I have the data, I saw it, and, remember what organisation I serve in," it was a little bluff since AXDF facilities had just received or still receiving the observation data from me and a bunch of other pilots, it was too early to make statements, but, according to the news, they are certainly targeting passenger vessels randomly. There simply can't be so many people with Thargoid-related tech inside their bodies, or Guardian artifacts in their pockets, or too much ammonia in their gut to assume those new bastards target them. These pins were yet to be connected, but we had more than enough red thread to do so.

"It wasn't your fault. It wasn't your choice. It wasn't something you even knew about at the moment. Don't blame yourself. Please."

Anyway, that was disturbing. Thargoids were known to attack ships and stations and steal the escape pods if they notice them, though... Now they fixated their shitey gooey green brains on developing and using a measure to abduct people intentionally. They can't see the difference between military and civilian, this had been a big piece of wood in the fire of that war, and now more of it just had dropped into the flames. Maybe... They really understand human psychology. Maybe they're hitting where it hurts, trying to break our spirit. I guess I should expect a massive wave of recruits to train...

"This is over now, you're here. You survived. You're alive, you're on a station. It's safe here. Let's get back to the table, shall we?" I stood up slowly and stretched out my hands so that Kasumi could grab them.
06 Aug 2023, 2:32pm
"No... you don't ..."

I let my head hang again. How could I explain that I understood what the Thargoids were saying, and in those reports that came through - those that didn't were likely pilots no longer in a position to - it was clearly evident these ships seemed to only target passengers and escape pods or whatever in the cargo hold. Anything that held humans. But in my case, things were different. Those ships just provided a different, potentially better vector for them to try.

I lifted my head and looked Meowers directly in the eyes, as if to say that, then breathed out.

"Okay... okay."

I moved to my knees, slowly, and very carefully, unable to get my body's trembling under control yet. I tried to pick up the bottle of water, but my hands were still far too unsteady to, so I just stood up and shuffled over to the couch again, after throwing a look at the bottle to indicate I wanted it along.
06 Aug 2023, 3:16pm
"I don't... I don't what?" I wondered, but then added, "Don't worry. You can explain everything later."

I looked how Kasumi slowly returned to the table, without the bottle in her hands. Picking it up, I joined her, sat across the table again and put the bottle on it. My not-so-iced-already tea was waiting for me, though, thankfully, remaining pleasantly cold; sipping the drink, letting it refresh my mind and body, I continued.

"Don't overstress yourself now, please. Let it fade. It always fades. Give it some time and it will be gone, you're on that way already."

Sadly, I've no idea about how, and if, her implant dealt with extreme stress, intrusive memories and other traumatic things. Though, by the looks of it, the symptoms were textbook classic.

"Grab the table strongly if you feel it returning... Like, really strong, as strong as you can. This might be helpful too."

At this moment, I hoped that effects will keep being textbook classic, understandable by me on the 'external' and 'internal' points of view. What I know for sure is... You should stand back and stop attempting anything if you're uncertain, not to mention if you see things becoming worse after whatever you do. Normally, mind and body try to stabilise, lower the stress levels over time, and even if your support doesn't include any medication, those signs of calming down mean that the situation is under control already, and the best you can do is to prevent recurrent triggering. Which I couldn't, in a public place, uncontrollable environment: my only available option here included crossing my fingers, since shamanic drums are too loud.

"If you want something, then let me know. But, not now. After you start to feel okay enough to speak."
06 Aug 2023, 4:39pm
I remained silent for an indeterminate amount of time before I simply responded by pointing at my head with my right hand, then shook slightly, as if a strongly displeasing sensation ran through my body - in a way, it did, given how I still felt at the moment.

"It... it's... because of what I told you... yesterday."

That was the only hint I could currently provide until my tolerance for talking was exhausted, and was willing to give out here, too. My hands were still rather shaky, only barely affording me enough control to move the water bottle to my mouth and hold it there for a second, before I had to place it back down. Some instinct or feeling wanted me to lay down flat on the couch, belly up, so I did, not caring if I wasn't supposed to, and began to look through files that I hadn't really gotten the time to look through before, recovered from the planetary outpost I'd snuck into not long ago.

It was a distraction, but now, I felt just distanced enough to stop my mind from constantly circling back to what I had experienced, even if barely removed from it still. The noises of construction work somewhere deeper in the port still made me flinch and stop to listen, reminding me too much of the sound that had set off yet another incident to add more trauma to work through, but not run away to cower in a corner and whimper in fear of the memories. Even so, I wouldn't be ready to return to any ship before the end of the day at least.
06 Aug 2023, 6:05pm
"I understand. Don't worry, I'll be here as long as needed, I'm not going anywhere."

I finished my already half-empty cup of tea in one gulp, before it had a chance to get lukewarm, and ordered another one. Maybe it might help me think better, since I understood it was connected to the things Kasumi told me, but... had no idea to which part. Her initial, pre-Azimuth abduction, as it was something Jenna didn't know and didn't mention during her emotional burst? Maybe. Her ability to communicate, or, at least, listen? An option too. Her nightmares? They come in many forms and she didn't tell me much about them anyway. She jumped into the system full of those bugs, so that effectively means she aren't afraid of them and of possible death in battle... At least not in a space battle and 'aren't afraid' still somewhere within normal range of being not afraid of dying, like, 'not a phobia' level... Ah, finally, my second tea.

Human brain isn't a computer, but something tells me it can overheat from excessive thinking none less. And that iced tea really helped, maybe not with thinking itself, but at least with feeling my brain being a brain, not a hamster in the wheel, whose arse is covered in mustard. Wheels... Pinwheels, dammit. Listening to their babblings on the recordings, I thought for a moment that lobotomy might've been included in their initiation rite.

So... She aren't afraid of fighting them on a ship... But, this time, they were actually on the same ship. And the sounds were the same as on Dedicant audio logs... Maybe facing them, or knowing they're near, near her body, not just her ship, was that trigger... Near her body... Those new bastards aren't simply killing people, shooting at ships and stations, enjoying their overmatching firepower, and then collecting pods in case of them flying around... They were designed to abduct living people.

Do her fears have any connections to being abducted? Argh... I guess I should ask later.

At that very moment I didn't feel like I'm able to do anything better than sticking close to her in case she needs anything. But, maybe, it was the best option.
06 Aug 2023, 7:41pm
I spent a while just laying there, reading or flicking through files from the outpost decrypted by EDI - a task which I could have done myself, but decided to pass on for the sake of expedience. By now, my hands were not a complete trembling mess, allowing me to grab and drink from the water bottle freely, though I didn't feel isolated enough from the incident to keep talking. And going through the files was getting to me in a different way, reminding me of Silvia's absence too much.

I moved my body into a seated position on the couch again, and sighed after looking around. The noises of the construction works ranged somewhere from annoying to mildly upsetting now, but the risk of them triggering another flashback seemed far. Or so I hoped. I decided to look at Meowers, whose eye contact I had largely been avoiding so far. Whatever little direct eye contact I sought with people, anyway.

"If... we talk about this more, it... should be somewhere else."

That was that, in my mind, at least. I could tell questions still lingered on her mind, but they were for another place. And maybe another time, too.
06 Aug 2023, 8:46pm
...I was glancing at Kasumi from time to time, slowly drinking my tea and wandering in my own thoughts, glad to notice she was looking better. Finally, she mustered enough energy to get up.

"I might think about the place... Somewhere nearby, but without those frackin' noises. And with less people around. Though, no need to haste."

I pulled my datapad out of the pocket and opened a station schematics. The only artificial park I knew of was literally miles away. Both inner and outer levels were, kind of, a bad choice: too many ships on the former, and I doubt observation windows on the latter were an okay option too. Some sort of quiet place on a habitable, helmet-free planet could do totally fine, though you need a ship to reach it, being on the station. All that revealed a problem that was quite obvious, but it didn't get in the way earlier: we knew almost nothing about each other except the heavy things.

"If ships aren't an option now, then, I guess, places with observation windows fall into the same category. I know a small park section here, been there quite a while ago, but it's a damn long walk. We may rent a room, don't worry about the costs, where you can drop on the bed and watch stupid shows or play games until your brain stops and enters the reset mode. And I'll be somewhere close enough in case you need me, but out of plain sight, like, privacy and all that stuff. Other than that..." I rubbed the back of my head and sipped a little more tea, "Other than that I don't exactly know what places you like. I know they should be quiet and with as less hoomans as possible around, and that's, kind of, my favourite features as well, but nothing other than that. Just... Think of where you might want to be, and what will be the first thing that crosses your mind."
