General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“I don’t… know…”

I put my head into my hands and held it there, running them across it slowly.

“Somewhere… dark. Quiet. Even a simple apartment room would do. Closed windows, shutters, or just neither of the two. No light in, no light out.”

Such a place was as close to my comfort zone as it would get. Isolated from the exterior, with the noise of the world muffled or blocked out entirely, nothing and no one allowed in or out unless allowed. In a way, it was very similar to the way my mind worked, almost always rather guarded about anything that tries to get in, while very selective and cautious about what comes out.

That tendency had become slightly less apparent due to various states of distress I had been in over the last week or three, but it still worked in much the same way, only giving out what I willed toward people I considered it safe to share with - the most surprising thing being how quickly it came out.

Said isolationist tendencies were what probably didn’t make it surprising that I had a certain fondness for darkness, even feeling safe within it, due to the way it simply allowed me to slip away and no longer be seen.

I raised an eyebrow slightly. That was, kind of... Unexpected level of seclusion. I liked to be in my small 'personal space' places most of the time too, but I preferred them filled with dimmed warm lighting and maybe some soft quiet music, and didn't mind having terminal or datapad screens turned on, to do something maybe, or watch something or play something or whatever else. Though, a total darkness and an absence of sound were fine for me as well, mostly. Ironically, except moments of being in a bad head place: I needed something well-known and safe to distract on.

"Ow. Okay, let's see..."

My communicator appeared in my hand and I contacted several cabin rental businesses nearby, sending them a list of requests. Two beds, separate kitchen, blackout shutters or no windows at all, and the most robust noise-dampening insulation humanity has to offer. Preferably, with self-service, like, don't knock that door or you're going to see me not quite happy with that and you don't want it.

A few minutes of waiting, and some offers dropped into my inbox.

"That's just one bed... These idiots have a dance club right in the next section... This one... Ah, that's a luxury one, why are they always looking like ancient crypts... Nope, I told no more than 20 minutes, not across the entire station... And this... Crap, that bathroom looks like someone exploded in there..." browsing the replies, I thought for a minute that they all were trying to sell me something 'close, but not quite what I needed', despite having that ideal room somewhere: to offer it for a triple price after I reject all other options.

"Hmmm... This one looks nice", I opened the photos and nudged the device closer to Kasumi. "What do you say? May be a bit small, like, a bed to the left, a bed to the right, and, like a metre and a half between them, that stupid screen on the wall isn't going to be used anyway, but it doesn't have any windows at all and the neighbouring rooms are empty. And the kitchen is separate, in case I want to smoke. Or you want to be completely alone in the room for a while. Also there are some vending machines in the corridor, so we can deal with thirst and hunger without interacting with anyone at all. Fifteen minutes walk and we're on the place."
07 Aug 2023, 6:22am
I looked over the datapad with a certain, absent gaze, partially distracted by thoughts, but saw nothing particularly objectionable, though the two close together beds didn’t exactly please me either.

“Okay. Let’s go.”, I replied, speaking in a low, unusually soft tone. “Don’t… don’t want to be here right now.”

The bar had served its purpose, and I realized that I really didn’t want to be in a public place when in a state where I just needed to be isolated from the world for a little. I had simply chosen it due to not knowing a better place, and not being able to bear staying within the confines of a ship, but now there was another option, and I hated not being able to talk freely here.

Normally, I didn’t require something as extreme as what I had asked for too, preferring simpler shutters that let enough light in to see without turning any lamps on, yet still create a sense of isolation from the world where I could extend my shell to the room and feel safe in. But right now, I just needed to be removed from it completely to let my brain work through my emotions.

Meanwhile, I became police officer, more in my log: https://inara.cz/elite/cmdr-logbook-entry/397249/77769/

I am going from my first duty as police officer, to bar. I was excepting party held by my new coleagues, but when I walked in, but there were a really few people and zero, who I ve seen before.

I headed right to bar counter and said to bartender: "Please, can I get one big Lavian Brandy into my mug?" and I placed my Hutton Mug on the counter. Bartender answered: "Ya, no problem. Dont you know something about second bartendress? I think her name is Silvia. I am new here, so I dont know everyone already but she got to my mind, cause few people are quite curious about her whereabouts." "Hmm" I said, "I didnt hear anything; did something happened when I was not here?"

Bartender, after he placed full mug of brandy in front of me, answered simply: "I only heard that she didnt call boss that she dont arrive. And thats for her non-standart. For that I am here. As backup work force."

I was going to stand up and get to my spot, on which, as usually, I will be for two or three hours watching traffic in docks and slowly sipping that brandy, I said to bartender: "I will try to find out about her disappearance as I am new police officer" I showed him my, now shining badge, "but if it is not announced or somebody well known, there is only small chance of succes." I left bar counter and sat on my chair, watching traffic in docks and with full mug in front of me, on the table.

I was simply sitting in the bar, when my datapad buzzed due new message. I turned it on, and saw this: https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/galnet/thargoid-scythes-undertake-human-harvest "Hmm, that doesn't look good" I read whole article, then stood up, saluted to the barman and departed to visit local police station. There I reported my arrival on the duty and left for my Jetfire, because on everyday job is T-10 too much bulky.

Willow wasn't used to station time without the job keeping her restricted, so she had no idea if it was time for breakfast, lunch or evening meal, but what ever. Anytime was a good time for something out of a pack.

No one she knew was in, so her info on Silvia would have to wait, but that just meant she could eat without interruption. It must have been something to do with the bar serving food, but the vending machines here were always well stocked, even when everywhere else was running out. Something must have happened to the supplies coming in to the station.

What ever, it didn't matter right now, they had steak and onion Stars in the Pie with peas and carrots. Willow watched that little treat revolve like a kid waiting for Christmas morning.

Vasil walked into the bar, wearing his usual blue-grey flight suit. Much more utilitarian than the more custom fit black and gold suits used for more official business, this one was more utilitarian, closer to a maverick suit than anything else but without all of the added gear. Though dressed more for operations than business, he did not sport the usual two-to-three-day stubble that he often has after prolonged flight operations.

Taking a seat at the bar, he spotted Willow over by the vending machines. "Can you actually live off of that stuff?"

Vasil Vasilescu Taking a seat at the bar, he spotted Willow over by the vending machines. "Can you actually live off of that stuff?"

"Oh hey Vee, like yeah, totally. It's made to stay fresh, so it gotta keep me fresh right?"

Willow treated one of the few people she'd met in the bar that acted like a normal person to one of her well guarded smiles.

"So I do know better you know? I've cared for sooo many people that eat like I do, so I know what it's doing to my tummy works. Anyway, like, you here to watch the Cheat Q Cheat?"
09 Aug 2023, 9:04pm
"You're an adult. Eat and drink what you want. Speaking of drinks," vasil said, pushing one of the barstools out from the bar, "Have a seat, let me buy you one. I at least owe you that for showing me that little place down by the market." He got the bartender's attention. "A bourbon for me, straight-up, and whatever this young lady would like, if you please."
09 Aug 2023, 9:07pm
"Oo, a tin of Vega Juice please, no glass, just a straw thanks. I'm just waiting for my pie, says 30 seconds"
09 Aug 2023, 9:12pm
Vasil let out a small chuckle. "Vega juice and vending machine pies. I suppose the good of the former balances the harm of the later."
09 Aug 2023, 9:20pm
"Like, nar" said Willow putting her hot segmented plastic plate on the counter. "Everything but the water in this tin is produced in a lab. And like, It's got the color of something that probably got a half life"

Taking her bottle out of its pocket she offered it to Vasil.

"Would you mind like, opening that please? So, I can use my teeth, but I don't like the way that feels, and I'll use a guy with two hands if I got one nearby. So, what you have been in to Vee, like since the market meet up?"
09 Aug 2023, 9:33pm
"Menus?" asked the bartender.

Vasil shook his head. "I am fine. It looks like vending machine pies are the order of the day" he added with a cant of his head toward Willow. He opened her drink and set it down on the bar within easy reach of her good arm. "I'll be a gentleman and forego the easy joke about using a guy, but thank you for the set up whether intentional or not. As for me, it has been most of the same. Handling ops and contracts for the Emerald Repatriation Society. Doing runs to damaged stations when I can. That is one of the reasons I stopped here. One of the passengers did not pass the vetting process. Stolen identity. Probably killed the person he was pretending to be. Station security has him now."
09 Aug 2023, 9:48pm
"Er, no, not the drink, I can deal with a tinny, it's this" said Willow shaking her bottle of extract at Vasil "And there's a rod on the inside of the cap, so like careful with that. Oh, um, please"

"Yeah, theres like, sooo many people doing that sort of work thanks to the damn Goids. I was in the Coal Sack when they turned you know? I used to go to the barnacle sites all the time you know? Like, when I was short on work, to snag some Metas. It was pretty peaceful there, but now.."

Willow shook her head slowly.

"Like, no freaking way now, you know?" She paused for a while remembering the haunting beauty of the Thargoid sites, but now it held nothing but resentment and guilt. She couldn't help but feel that every alloy she'd stolen had somehow contributed to the Goids going from a few strikes against outer system, to a full on invasion.

"Er, so anyway like, who are Emerald Repatriation Society? Like, what are they owed for? Gotta be something big to put Repatriation right there in the title"
