General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“No. He’s still going to hear it.”

‘Why couldn’t he just leave completely?’, I thought to myself, and glared at the counter.

That man felt entirely unwelcome. Not only did Willow make me feel uncertain about what I thought was a good plan, now he had to force himself into something he had no business in, and the only people that I remotely trusted with anything in this were already at the same table with me.

But I also didn’t feel like walking up to him and telling him to go elsewhere than the bar, because I was already rather on edge, emotionally and otherwise, yet I couldn’t expect any of the bar staff to tell an OmniPol officer to just leave either.
11 Aug 2023, 9:33am
Suddenly, my Datapad reminded my that we have meeting in our headquaters. I must be there in 10 minutes. "Oh, ok I can do it" I said to myself and began to run to our hq
11 Aug 2023, 10:03am
*watches the officer suddenly get up and leave hastily, then takes a long, deep breath*

“Okay… so… I had this idea. That we could use the… Thargoids …”

I sighed, and gave off an annoyed sound, no longer beating around the bush, or bothering to try suppressing the blush that was on my face and made my cheeks feel like they were lit aflame.

“Ugh. Whatever. You all know… about me, already. I don’t trust random merc forces that Diaz could very easily have paid off to stab us in the back right when they were supposed to get in on the action, and it doesn’t look like anyone really has any other options to bring up a fleet.”

I paused for a moment, catching my breath.

“So I’m thinking we, and by that I mean me, find some way to get the Thargoids in to add a bit of chaos. Between that and the defense turrets, the support fleet will be more busy surviving than worrying about some human ships right within them. Or they’ll give the turrets a better target than us. But just dropping a bunch of Guardian or Thargoid relics in there will just make them shoot everything on sight, while we don’t want them shooting us, so …”

I left the end of the proposal open-ended, still not sure how I could even make it work.
11 Aug 2023, 10:16am
"...and if anyone start asking questions, I intervene. An experiment conducted by AXDF for, and on behalf of, Aegis, and other blah blah blah. Turn 180 or go fuck yourselves please before the Thargoids did it because this place is dangerous. Aegis knows her," I motioned towards Kasumi. "And our top ranks are cooperating with Aegis as well. Any evidence of slavers and Azimuth cooperating will reinforce that disguise. And will serve as a perfect explanation of my own presence there."

I took my cup of tea after telling that, with my usual everyday neutral tone. Though, in this moment, I presumed, those words sounded more like a statement.
11 Aug 2023, 10:44am
*sees Meowers grab her tea and gets reminded of an earlier idea, then motions toward a waiter, who walks over*

“I’d like to have a tea, please. Hot, red fruit mix if you have that flavor. Sugar on the side.”

The waiter acknowledged the order and walked away, returning with it a few minutes later. I took a cautionary sip but put it back down as it was still tongue-burning hot, and decided to wait for it to cool down, listening for responses and the likely objections to what, even in my mind, seemed like an insane idea. And yet, I didn’t have any other alternatives that I could see working.
11 Aug 2023, 11:11am
'You'd be risking all of our lives. I am going to have to respectfully decline. You have seen what the hell is happening right now yes? Can't agree to this.'

I give Kasumi a disgusted look for even mentioning Thargoid intervention. From my view point she is proving my betrayal to humanity point. It's almost appalling to think she would be willing to risk all of out safety just to give the raiders trouble.

'No. That is the final answer. We use the ship turrets. You want to play science experiment do it when we aren't around. I will not allow it.'
11 Aug 2023, 11:27am
“Those same ship turrets that, if the hack doesn’t work for any reason, will rip a few big holes into your and our other ships. Do you want to have an alternative, or put all your eggs into one basket?”

I fully expected that woman to be confrontative and obnoxious, and it made poorly-contained despise and hatred surface again.

“No one here is doing this for you. All you’ve done has proven that you’re reckless, impulsive, and really annoying. If you don’t like part of the plan, you can go into it alone and see if that works out as you expect it to. Unlike you, if something does go wrong, I can take responsibility for it.”

I moved my tea to a safe distance from the woman, as I definitely didn’t want it to land in my face, and instinctively took closer position to Meowers.

“We only get one shot at this, and you’re still being a bitch just because I’m not how you like it. I could say you’re risking our lives just as much by refusing to consider the only even half-decent alternative option anyone else has presented.”

‘Not to mention the Thargoids will take notice of any kind of larger fighting breaking out around there anyway, especially that close to Azimuth’s headquarters.’, I added in thoughts.
11 Aug 2023, 11:54am
"Right now, whilst you're refusing options that can help us save your dear one, those godsdamned slavers may do hell knows what heinous things to her," I looked at Jenna scornfully. "We're going to risk our lives and cause a chaos in a piece of space one way or another. If bugs attack us despite all Kasumi's efforts and tricks, I'll send them to their maker. Buying you two, Silvia and Melli, and maybe other civilians, a time to escape."

"We may not have to resort to this option at all. Who knows. But, the more of those options we have, the more chances for Silvia to survive. Or remain the same Silvia."
11 Aug 2023, 12:06pm
'I'm not acting any way I have deep concerns for your plan. I don't think even you have control over these things. You act like you know everything. I am not going to allow you to risk her life or my life or even the AXDF pilots life. I am trying to be reasonable here.'

I was annoyed by Kira and had half a mind to take matters into my own hands. I did however have the upper hand in this situation as I knew Silvia better than any of the people here and I was willing to prove that to then.

'If you want to explain to Silvia how you endangered her life because you were wanting to play scientist be my guest but I can assure you she will never forgive you. I know her better than anyone in this fucking bar and I don't appreciate you acting like I don't.'

'You want people to not hunt you down to the ends of the galaxy then don't do stupid rash shit. I'm not being hostile right now that is you. I am thinking with a very clear mind.'

One thing I knew better than anyone here is that Silvia is quick to lose trust in a person if they endanger her or a loved one regardless of that person's intent. I was so willing to just let this stupid moody hooded chick face Diaz on her own. Let her see exactly how vicious and vile he can be. She could die and I'd be ok with it.

"Fucking thargoids really. She is a fucking idiot if she thinks they will obey her. She isn't the fucking queen of the damned things." I thought to myself. Kira was testing me but I was doing my best to keep calm.

'Another thing. Stop making me the fucking enemy. I fucked up. At least I'm willing to admit my fucking flaws instead of hiding them.'
11 Aug 2023, 12:28pm
“Strong words from you. I can see it in your eyes. You don’t give a shit about me and still hate me because I’m ‘not human’. So you want your precious wife to stop hanging out with me.”

‘Like you get to decide what ‘being human’ means.’, I thought, then shook my head.

“Stop trying to bullshit me. You just hate the ‘plan’ because you don’t have any better ideas than I do, but it would hurt Jenna to admit that. So maybe I don’t have control over them, but whatever is can be persuaded. Not that you’d know or care, so blinded by hatred that you just categorically reject it.”

I gave her a direct look in the eyes.

“You want to know what I see? You’re stuck fighting yourself between Silvia’s wife and the crazy blue-haired bitch. So answer me this - am I going to work with Jenna, or am I going to work with Venus? If it’s the former, I’m done trying to help you. You can then go either alone or wait for us anyway. You think Silvia will hate me for daring to ensure that we have as many options as possible to rescue her, you can tell her about why her friends are dead because you decided only your way goes and nobody else’s.”

I waited for a few seconds to let it sink in.

“And if the Thargoids decide to stab us in the back, unlike idiot mercs that change sides once a bigger paycheck is provided, we’re going to know exactly when and where it is coming. And I’ll shoot those bastards myself if I have to.”
11 Aug 2023, 12:43pm
'Would you fucking stop? You are assuming shit about me. I don't give a fuck about you. You are correct in that. But that doesn't mean I would want for Silvia to stop being around people she trusted. You know next to nothing about her. You want to bank your entire friendship on hopes and dreams be my guest.'

'Please stop making me the enemy. I'm denying your plan because it's fucking idiotic. It's wreckless. It's irrational. And it puts too much hope in you being able to persuade the fucking bugs to listen to you. Stop being stupid. And for fucking once think about doing something that doesn't involve extreme measures of violence.'

She did it again she assumed she knew Silvia better than me and it was frustrating. This stupid woman talks about wanting to help and needing help but then switches pace. I was keeping calm though.

'Besides you bring them there that carrier is as good as gone. He won't stick around and wait. I can guarantee that all docking requests will be denied if they arrive then you have just sealed all of our fates. He's not a fucking mindless fool. You bring chaos into this he will run. We will never see Silvia again. If that happens I promise you I will hunt you to the far reaches of our galaxy. You will have the ever looming threat of being taken out in your sleep.'

'That is not a threat but a promise. And it's one I would rather not have to act on.'
11 Aug 2023, 1:10pm
I just rolled my eyes.

“Fine, whatever. Stay stubborn and have it your way. You like to tell me I know nothing, but you’re just as clueless about me. Or seem to think Diaz will just accept a few ships showing up unscheduled claiming to be part of Azimuth’s team. Like he doesn’t know someone will come for Silvia.”

I shook my head.

“In case it escaped your notice, they know I was around when they kidnapped her, and very much left to go after her. If I wasn’t, you wouldn’t know shit about her even being in his hands. And what’s to stop him from leaving as soon as someone starts to screw with the carrier in the first place? Again, that asshole will expect I’m going to pay him a visit so I can put a bullet through his head. Or maybe he’s expecting you to make him pay his dues.”

I paused.

“Either way, the moment trouble starts, I can guarantee you he’s not going to stay. But while I’m willing to trust you in that you’re going to help bring him down, no matter what happens, you don’t seem to be able to put the slightest bit of trust in the person that knows more about the Thargoids than everyone on this fucking station.”

“And if you want to hunt me down, if we fail, I won’t be alone. But I’m pretty damn sure we won’t.”

I moved closer to Meowers and whispered into her ear, facing away from ‘Jenna’ to where she couldn’t see.

“She’s not going to listen to me. Too stuck up about ‘knowing everything’. And the Thargoids will show up anyway - once trouble around that carrier starts, they won’t resist the lure of a crippled capital ship.”
11 Aug 2023, 1:13pm
Once again, I felt like two stones, and Jenna's behaviour was simply unbearable. Who knows, maybe if not for my presence, she would start another fight.

I looked at her.

"And what if your plan fails? What if those turrets rip the Cutter's engines apart, leaving us floating like an armoured piece of shit?"

"I totally believe you're doing what you see right. And the way you see right. But there are always things we can't control, and they lead to situations we can't predict. Why is it that bad, to have one option more?"

Kasumi GotoI moved closer to Meowers and whispered into her ear, facing away from ‘Jenna’ to where she couldn’t see.

“She’s not going to listen to me. Too stuck up about ‘knowing everything’. And the Thargoids will show up anyway - once trouble around that carrier starts, they won’t resist the lure of a crippled capital ship.”
I nodded slowly and whispered in response, "This is expectable. Do your thing and I'll be around in case something gets uglier than it already is."

'Did you miss the part where I was going to be the one to approach and drop the limpet in an Imperial eagle?'

'I.... both of you are absolutely insane. I'm putting myself on the front and you both ignored it entirely. You think that because of how I acted earlier that is who I am.'

'I am not saying I know more than you I never claimed to but you are relying on something that we all know frighteningly little about. I don't care if you think you are an expert you do not know their intentions. None of us do.'

'You want to know my back up plan? I make a call to a very powerful ally. I may not have the pull I used to but Diaz is a threat they want to see eliminated.'

I shake my head and turn away from the two. It was frustrating.

“If Silvia decides to throw me out because I wanted to be absolutely sure that she is rescued, then I’ll have to reconsider a lot about what I thought of her. Because that wouldn’t sound like an understanding person and friend, especially if it didn’t get anyone who didn’t deserve to die killed.”

I sighed.

“And if I need to, I can just switch off that entire carrier’s systems long enough to get to engineering and switch off the FSD before they can bypass the program I made them deal with. Trust me, that thing does some real nasty stuff.”

I leaned toward Meowers again.

“Why is it so fucking difficult to just rescue a friend and not have them be a total asshole about wanting to be sure?”
