General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Alright, alright. Relax. Look, I've only been there once... twice, maybe, and I've wanted to see what's there, at the center, since the first one arrived. You might even say I felt drawn to it." I provided a subtle wink to Silvia with my right eye, ensuring no one else saw. "And what I did in there - look around, zero weapons onboard - would be an extremely minor inconvenience compared to the idiots that go inside and start shooting its turrets and local Thargoids. Besides, it was worth doing for the pictures alone."

I showed one of the 'top' of the vessel to her.

"Pretty impressive, right? Our biggest ships and stations got nothing on that."

I sighed. "And I've got to be honest with you - I think much the same about us poking around in there. It's not a place we should go, and the Thargoids definitely are going to respond to the armed aggressions. In a way, they already have. You heard of those 'Glaives'? Kinda look like throwing stars. Almost impossible to outrun, they shut down your frame shift drive, and generally not a lot of fun to deal with. First saw 'em around the Titan, then they started showing up in space in the Bubble they control now. Apparently also around invaded systems as well, more recently."

"Relatively safe to say they're directly tied to the Maelstrom presence - haven't seen a single one of those in any of the nebulas. But anyway, I figured that if anyone tried to research those Titans even just in as little of an invasive way as is possible, it might as well be someone sane... half sane, maybe. Instead of one of those bloodthirsty idiots that think the Thargoids are "mindless bugs" that only deserve to be eradicated. Maybe if we understand a thing or two more, we can actually try to, you know, make an informed attempt at something that isn't just throwing more guns at the problem. Which hasn't worked well so far, so I think a change in approach is overdue - and necessary - anyway."

As I sit listening to Kira go on about her insane mission, I begin to start feeling too warm and remove Melli from around my neck. My skin is flushed red due to the body heat of the creature. I find a nice spot on a shelf up high and place her down. She figures out the plan and moves into a believable position for an animal mount. In a hushed tone I talk to Melli.

'Now stay there and don't move unless we need to run.'

I return to the table and just simply shake my head.

'I don't think we should even go there to study. Too much risk involved with it.'
08 Jun 2023, 11:51pm
"I'm not sure what to say. 'Try to convince Aegis about it'? They say that the Maelstroms are somehow key to understanding the Thargoids, or something in this war. I just hope their plan isn't to make guns that can actually hurt those things. You know what they say about playing with fire... although in this case, it's more like playing with a volcano."

Silvia's placing of her pet - the name of which refused to stick in my head - on a shelf confused me, and I raised an eyebrow as she came back to the bar counter.

'What are you doing?', was portrayed as a question on my face, not that I expected a direct answer.

"Alright, look, I'm not gonna cause any trouble, but if you're expecting something to happen, I'd rather know about it. If not ..."

I continued about the Titan matter.

"I have no intentions to go back in there, don't worry. Twice was enough, and if I need anything else from there, I'll just buy it from someone instead of risking my own life. Because apparently, that new scanner module from Aegis reveals some kind of spot where a research limpet can pull tissue from. Like that's totally not going to piss them off." The sarcasm in my voice was rather apparent. "I'm not sure there's anything else I can... publicly... say, when those cameras are recording everything. Especially if it's about, you know, that thing we spoke about."

I wasn't even sure how much I could word my way around the subject, and looked around nervously. Something had Silvia startled, and not knowing exactly what made me feel nervous as well. Especially since I was in the possession of knowledge that made me think the break-in into her ship wasn't just a thief trying to be opportunistic.

'Twice.'

I nearly choke on the word as I say it. It's bad enough to enter once but to go in twice is something of a mad woman.

I look back up at Melli on the shelf minding her business observing the goings on of the bar.

'Melli was making my neck entirely too warm. It's not exactly scarf weather in here.'

I turn back to Kira a disappointed look on my face. My tone becomes almost motherly.

'You should know better than to go messing with things like this.'

Silvia Sharpe'You should know better than to go messing with things like this.'

Maybe you’re right, but you don’t know what the last… well, the last five or six years have been like for me. Especially the last few months since… well… you know that part.”

I looked around.

“Not that this is an excuse, but I have a tendency to survive what I really shouldn’t. I’ll let you decide whether it’s a matter of luck or skill. And …”

I stopped. This was going a little too deep into personal things and feelings, and I needed to decide whether I wanted to continue.

“Well, look, I used to have a sister, and things haven’t been the same for me since. If you get what I mean.”

I whispered my next words, wanting a straight answer about my question, without alerting anyone else.

“I’m not buying that you simply put your pet there because it’s too warm to have it around your neck. Could have just let her down to the bar counter. What’s this really about? Are you worried the Thargoids try to control me? And don’t bullshit me, please. I’ve been lied to enough in my life.”
09 Jun 2023, 12:21am
Motions at my neck to show the obvious signs of being exposed to too much heat.

'Do you not see my neck? Besides Melli was nearly taken most likely in part due to the Neural implant in her head. I have a few guesses as to who could want such an item.'

I pause and take another sip of my drink. My response is much the same as the first.

'Whaph. I'll never get used to that. Listen maybe we discuss something else this conversation has taken a strange turn.'

Having remembered a small amount of the Goodness family and playing on what Creamy mentioned about his not wanting to be involved in the ongoings of his father I poke fun at him.

'So Lord Charles. What are your thoughts about the goings on as of late?'

I let out a small snicker as I finish speaking.
09 Jun 2023, 12:37am
Listen maybe we discuss something else this conversation has taken a strange turn.'

"Alright, fine. But I'm just saying, you need help with something or want to talk about things somewhere more private, I'm open. Anyway ..."

I decided to breathe slowly and remove my mind from the subject.

"I mean no offense, but I haven't exactly seen the most positive side of humanity for most of my life, so I don't, like, trust easy. Hence my question. As to that stuff with the Maelstroms, it might seem insane to you... or most people... but what choice do you see us having? If we figure out the exact purpose served by them, maybe we can, I don't know, try to approach them with a proper communication request. I try to see it from a positive light, anyway. Last thing I want to see is those things getting destroyed."

I moved over to a nearby sofa and pulled it into a position facing the bar counter, then sat down. I was starting to feel rather sleepy again, and didn’t feel like standing further.

He strolled into the bar, having rested for a bit at the hotel. He cleans up well after a shower and a shave. Hell, he might have even looked distinguished in the right clothes and not the simple, undecorated, grey flight suit that was meant to be more utilitarian than impressive. After a quick glance around, he heads to a stool at the middle of the bar.
09 Jun 2023, 4:19pm
Watching Vasil enter the bar I smile politely. I was curious about his stay in the hotel I had recommended so I greeted him as he approached the bar.

'Hello Vasil. How was or rather is the room? Is it to your liking? What can I get started for you.
09 Jun 2023, 4:45pm
"Excellent hotel," he said, taking a seat. "Spending so much time out in the void can make you forget that so-called civilized space actually does have a few decent things in it. Sorry if I am remembering incorrectly, but I think you mentioned it was a hotel favored by your wife? If so, she has excellent taste and you, in turn, have excellent taste in partners." He looked over the tiers of alcohol and drummed his palms on the bar. "I'll have that top shelf bourbon again. and..." he glanced around the bar... "a round for the house, whatever they want."
09 Jun 2023, 5:32pm
'Had excellent taste. No longer present in this realm of existence. I like to believe she is traversing the entire universe as star dust seeing everything there is to offer.'

My tone is soft and remorseful but there is a spark of joy as I attempt to lighten the blow of her death.

'Certainly 1 brandy.'

I reach up to the top shelf and as I do Melli decides she is bored being a mannequin and uses my arm as a platform. She runs down my back and hops onto the bar. The little creature lets out a small bit of chatter and cautiously approaches Vasil. Her Ice blue eyes investigating the mans facial features carefully, seemingly attempting to memorize the face.

'Melli. Oh what ever, just be careful please, you are too important.'

I finish pouring the brandy and hand it over to Vasil and start a conversation.

'What brings you in today?'

"Sorry, didn't mean to dredge up any past loss regarding your wife." Vasil grins at Melli, holding out his hand, palm up, for the creature to decide whether or not it wanted to get close enough for a scratch under the jaw. "Oh... hello there, you little chatterbox. What are you, some kind of space weasel or something?" He had no idea what melli was, but he was certain it was not a space weasel, being as he had just made that up. "Or maybe a bar cat? Certainly not a barfly."

*has passed out on the couch from exhaustion and lack of sleep, and is, for once, completely unaware of her surroundings*
09 Jun 2023, 6:17pm
Melli places a paw into Vasil's hand. She lets out a bit of disgruntled chatter seemingly offended to be classified as something as annoying as a weasel. Though to anyone accept myself the chatter is unintelligible.

Weasel. Big one thinks me weasel. Melli much smarter than weasel. Prettier too.

I let out a laugh unable to hide the fact I understood her any longer.

'Haha she does not like being called a weasel. No Melli is a special hybrid. Mix between and arctic fox and a large fox like creature found out near Hawkings Gap.'

Noticing Kira sleeping in the back corner I make sure to keep an eye out for anyone or anything that may attempt to approach her. Knowing it was impossible for me to keep an eye out at all times I look at Melli.

'Go keep an eye on our friend over there. Force is acceptable if necessary.'

Melli gives a small nod as if she fully understood the request and quickly but gracefully makes her way over to Kira through the tables and around random bar guests.
09 Jun 2023, 6:35pm
He manages a quick, gentle rub of his thumb over the top of Melli’s paw before the creature trotted off.

“Smart. Well trained,” he said, watching melli move through the crowd. “Or maybe it is augmented in some way?" he asked looking back to Silvia. "Hell, if it is a construct, it is remarkably lifelike. A construct like that could command good money from people with money to spend on impressing other people with money to spend.”
