General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“I’m not sure this is them sending that guy, more than it is him deciding to do something on his own. Which is equally bad. Seen him around here once or twice.”

I took a breath.

“Anyway, I have my doubts the OmniPol agents would be any use to anyone here. Hell, they’ll probably just tell him to take the case and shove it into a drawer. Half of the galaxy thinks Azimuth aren’t doing anything wrong and don’t need to be absolved of their crimes.”

I paused for a second.

“They won’t send anyone out so quickly anyway, I would hope. But we still need to figure out how to deal with the carrier’s support fleet… I doubt they’ll just let us march in, or leave, once they figure out they’ve been compromised. Access codes or not.”

Another message from Willow arrived.

Nar, mom and dad still have a warehouse full of parts I've collated over the years. But, if you can get me accesses to Silvia's quarters or her ship so I can gather samples, I can calibrate your sensors to find her once your close to the carrier. Like, if you got a good sensor package on your ship that is.

And hey, if you got a hack, um I mean, research probe controller, I can marry that up to the Queen Anns' last known data, and you can "Research" the hell out of the thing, and use its computer to, you know help out. If you can get a limpet to it.

I mean like, my ship is decked for that sort of thing, but I can't fly one handed.

Since she appeared rather talkative - over messages, anyway - I decided to keep going with it, keeping one ear open to anything else that might get said to me.

Well, the offer still stands. Though I guess it wouldn’t differ much from any other piece of salvage.

Anyway, uh, I don’t really have access to Silvia’s quarters. Don’t think I even know where they are… I guess maybe the back room in the bar, but staff probably won’t let me poke there. And her ships… like, I think she shared them with blue-hair or something. So I’m definitely not going into one of those. Don’t feel like poking the devil, if you get what I mean.

(Not sure if I’m too dumb, but I don’t get the limpet idea.)

'If I wasn't on the shit list with the empire and her royal highness, I could have that support fleet occupied for a good long while.'

My mind was blank for some reason. I was also rather hungry. I stood from the seat I was in and walked over to the bar to pay my tab. I then turned to Meowers and Kira and extended an offer.

'I am heading out to grab something to eat would either of you care to join? The meals will be on me.... well not on me. I only mean that I will cover the cost of our meals. Please take this as a sign of gratitude. I am in the mood for some curry.'

I interlace my fingers and let them hang in front of me. I didn't expect either of these two women to take me up on my offer but I waited nonetheless for a response.
10 Aug 2023, 2:22pm
“Thanks, but the two of us have already eaten. Unless that was a few hours ago already, and I somehow managed to miss that time passing.”

I read over Willow’s new message quickly.

“So, Willow thinks hooking up a recon limpet to the Queen Anne’s Revenge to screw with its systems is a good idea. What do you two think? I’m not flying any ship that could do such a task without getting seen in there. Oh, and apparently, if we, or I, get her into Silvia’s quarters she says she can configure ship sensors to locate her on that carrier.”

While waiting for responses, I decided to reply to Willow.

That recon thingy might be a good idea, but I usually prefer to do that from the inside with an access point there. And once you use a recon limpet on a data port, that usually gets noticed pretty quickly, too. Not sure I’ll want that when there’s a whole bunch of angry pirates in engineered ships nearby.

Suppose that maybe blue-hair here could give us access to Silvia’s quarters. I’d assume she knows where they are, and can get inside, being that she’s her wife and all. If that fails, I guess that fox-creature thing could lead us to her on the carrier?

Oh, and while I have ships that could do the ‘Sneak in and hack into stuff’ thing, the Corvette I’ll be taking has about as much stealth to it as a bull in a china shop.
10 Aug 2023, 2:52pm
'Personal quarters? Unless a ship will work the closest we have is in Jameson Memorial.'

I was unsure of allowing people snoop around Silvia's belongings even if it was to help them find her. The information regarding Melli and Silvia was proprietary information and I felt uneasy letting her secrets out unintentionally.

'I will want to be present for anyone generating a profile for Silvia. There is information that must remain secret and unless she tells you personally that information needs to be protected. The fact that Azimuth even knows about the chip in their heads is concerning enough. Someone she worked with or was close with had to have said something.'

I was becoming extremely uneasy over things and my anxiety was rising. I was barely holding it together and now things are getting even more stressful. I was emotionally at my absolute limit. I let a small crying breath out unintentionally. My barrier was breaking down. Tears began to stream down the left side of my face as the emotions begin to overflow. I am visibly fighting back against the internal struggles.

I begin to shift nervously. My breathing begins to become shaky and trembles can be seen as I fight to maintain a level of composure befitting a royal. Time was short and the level of effort from everyone was more than I would have ever asked for.
10 Aug 2023, 2:56pm
"Yeah, uh, Willow's going to look around the back room there."

I pointed to the bar.

"Silvia used it as temporary living quarters while covering for an absent bartender. Try to be gentle with her if you want to oversee things."

I thought about replying to Willow that my Corvette was absolutely not set up for any kind of stealth operation right now, and that it would take time to refit, but didn't see much of a need, as she was basically here already. According to her message, anyway.
10 Aug 2023, 3:10pm
It was weird walking in the the galactic with a security escort on her flanks. Doing a job always gave Willow more confidence, she knew what she was doing with a task, and job didn't have complicated social habits she wasn't aware of that needed dealing with.

This time she walked in to the bar feeling like a forensics officer, because basically, that's what she was doing.

"Ok guys, if you could each blow into this" she said holding up what looked like and industrial breathalyser to the security officers "And then put a mask on, then stand well back from the door after opening it please"

The samples of the security officers required a change of blowing tube, and logging on the devices computer. Turning to the staff while she got other tools ready, Willow asked the staff for a little background info.

"Ok, great. Do you guys know if it was just Silvia that used this room, or did she ever. Um, did she er, have like company you know?"

Again, the Alterian Skin she used to stay ghostly white hid her blush.
10 Aug 2023, 3:15pm
I decided to approach Willow after seeing her enter, and hearing her ask that question to staff.

“Well… I was in there once, after… uh… well, let’s just say, I hit the floor a little too hard once and she decided to let me sleep it off. I wasn’t drinking, though. More like I was awake for way too long that day.”

That information was all I could provide, not without a certain embarrassment.

“Try not to disturb things too much in there. Some of her personal stuff might still be there, but, yeah …”

I threw a hinting glance at Jenna.
10 Aug 2023, 3:18pm
Cautiously I approached Willow. The security personnel stepped between myself and her as a show of force.

'Please step aside. There is no need for your involvement outside of just simply ensuring no one else enters.'

The give eachother odd looks shrug and step aside.

'Escuse me... Willow yes? Due to some of the sensitive information surrounding Silvia I request to be present in the room with you. I'll explain further behind closed doors as long as you have a jammer present.'
10 Aug 2023, 3:28pm
"Oh, so hi again. Right yeah, so can you blow into this too as you've been in there?"

Handing the end of the tube to Kasumi with a fresh fitting, Willow continued thinking about what she needed to know.

"So did you sleep in the bed? If you did could you swab your back and pits please?" said Willow handing Kasumi a pack of sampling swabs. "Like, I got her genetic data from the med centre, but like, ships can't do genetic scans, but they are great at detecting gases, and humans never stop off-gassing. Like from every hole, and their skin you know. That's what I'm trying to collet. Like, basically, Silvia's smell"

"Its real interesting how light and radiation pulses from a scanner detect even small amounts of.." Willow was getting technical again "..Yeah, so I guess you don't need to know that much"

The Blue menace laid down the rules, but she still need a breath sample and a mask to stand at the door.

"Ok sure. You got a jammer? Oh, and you'll need to blow into this too, like after Kasumi, and wear a mask if your going to he hovering over me"
10 Aug 2023, 3:38pm
“Uh… ok.”

I used the tube breather thing, and handed it back, looking at the swabs.

“I did… not quite voluntarily… sleep there. When you say back and pits, do you mean mouth, or shoulders and here?”

I put a hand to the back of my chest to point to the spot I meant.

“And I won’t follow you in there. Whatever happens is between the two of you.”
10 Aug 2023, 3:49pm
'Sure. If protocol dictates I can't argue with you.'

I take the device and blow into it. I grab a mask and place it over my mouth afterwards. I look around and point to Willows bag.

?You have gloves in there I could use? Silvia carried a signal jammer with her most places so it would be likely she had one in her bag and I'd prefer to not totally contaminate your stuff.'

A tremble washes over me as I fight back the emotional onslaught fighting against me. I take a long slow breath and close my eyes momentarily to try to compose myself. I open my eyes and look back to Willow.

'I won't be hovering so much as just observing you to ensure the wrong things don't get gathered up.'
10 Aug 2023, 3:52pm
"Oh like I totally mean your actual back, and your arm pits right?. I mean, I guess you laid on your back right? So, I'm going to be building a chemical profile of Silvia, so I need to eliminate any thing that's not her from that profile"

Willow was going to get technical now, she couldn't help it. She this was her jam, and she loved it.

"So, like lets say a sensor see a human using mass, movement and what it's been told a human ping is like. So it see humans as red ok? So your asking an eye that doesn't know what its looking at, to pick a shade of red from a cloud of random reds. I can tell your scanner what shade of red to look for, and give it a comparison to hold up and use. Got it?"

Turning to Jenna, Willow asked some more questions that would really help narrow down the parameters the computer would need.

"So like, she's your wife right? Did she have life insurance? Like, so many pilots have an ID implant coz space is like crazy dangerous, and you never know if your going to be recognisable if the worst happens. Silvia have that? Or like ear phone implants, like any cyber replacements at all could really narrow down the spectrum, you know?"
10 Aug 2023, 4:02pm
Willow Thorn"Oh like I totally mean your actual back, and your arm pits right?. I mean, I guess you laid on your back right? So, I'm going to be building a chemical profile of Silvia, so I need to eliminate any thing that's not her from that profile"

"Kind of yes, but also no? I was wearing, well, I think I was wearing all this at the time. Anyway, I'll, uh, be back in a second."

I quickly dropped by the bathroom to take the requested samples and handed them over to Willow once I was done.

"There you go. And try not to make these samples appear anywhere other than your own data, please."

I backed off from her and Venus/Jenna to give them space, thinking it fairly safe to assume they would be off fine in the back room. If not, I would make the former Imperial royal hear - and feel - it. In the meantime, I returned to Meowers and the man with the grey hair, sitting down at a safe-ish distance.

"So... while those two are having fun, I guess we should ..." I'd started talking without much of an idea, and turned my head to the man, expecting some scrutiny due to my appearance. "Forget that. You're the guy that runs the Imperial rescue group making those announcements all over, right? There are some... uh... things, you might need to be... aware of. Although you've probably already heard of them by now."

I hesitated for a moment thinking about the questions asked. One particular item stuck and that was her cybernetic shoulder replacement and the neural implant she had. I figured it wouldn't hurt to give just enough info to help.

'Sure she did. I remember every curve and feature of her.'

I close my eyes as a picture of Silvia runs through my head.

'She had a cybernetic shoulder replacement for her right shoulder after Melli's mother tore her arm apart. Scarring ran down the length of her right arm. She had a royal ID chip implanted once we got married. She also has a uh..... a modified neural implant. Hmmm she always wore a blood orange scented perfume. Such a sweet scent for a sweet woman.'

I open my eyes and blink a few times clearing away a few tears in the process.
10 Aug 2023, 4:19pm
My eyes moved left to right, looking at people participating in a conversation. It felt like I should listen more, since I didn't have that much information and could use more of it definitely to figure out what to do and what's happening, in detail. Even if my presumable role wasn't connected to that at all, being mostly about machinegunning slavers dare enough to stand between us and Silvia. And Melli.

Ah, too much information to process at once anyway, most of it will get into one ear and then fall from the other. But seems like some of it connected well to the stuff I knew about already.

"I don't know much about getting into places I shouldn't be, but all options sound good for me. Like, options. Not hypotheses. And the more options are at our disposal, the better", I intervened carefully, enjoying the cup of iced tea.

"Whether it's hacking into carrier's systems with a limpet, or hacking into carrier's bridge with big armoured phallic object such as Cutter, or what Kasumi wants to do... What I can tell for sure, from my own experience: things you can't control, like what's happening around that carrier at the moment, are rarely to go as you think," I shrugged, making a slightly sarcastic grimace, "We're going to improvise at one point or another. I suggest we should... Find some point, some approach that will allow us to execute most of those options."

"Like, the ship. I assume you," I nodded towards Kasumi, "won't be happy about ramming the armoured bridge or landing deck on your Corvette. And Jenna here can find... Ow, that even sounds weird, a disposable Cutter. To make that penetration possible. And, limpets. We may install the controller module just in case, it's better to have it if you need it. You all... May have already figured out what I'm talking about."
