General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“What do you need a recon limpet for when I can just find an access point inside the carrier and push a few buttons to turn it upside down? Well, figuratively. I’d probably just need a terminal to log into and toss one of my programs into it.”

I was mildly amused by my memory of turning the planetary outpost into utter bedlam by just a simple tap on my wrist computer, after breaching security.

“I guess for access to some of the more advanced systems I’d need a dedicated terminal, but it shouldn’t be too hard if everyone is busy dealing with bulkheads opening and closing randomly for anyone that isn’t me. Or whoever I add as exceptions to the program. And whatever other stuff it decides to target.”

I stopped myself to breathe, getting a little carried away in my enthusiasm about what were definitely illicit programs.

“So anyway, my current plan isn’t really too… complex, I guess. Use the access codes to slip past the defensive perimeter, wait for chaos to kick off and get inside, fetch Silvia, kill anyone that decides to stand in the way.” I felt like adding some light joking, so I did. “If command was always that simple, I’d be taking the role up more often.”

I paused for another moment.

“If that transport supposed to pick Silvia up is there and hasn’t landed yet, I’m blowing it right out of the… sky? Whatever. I’m not taking any chances of it leaving with her while we’re bogged down fighting waves of goons. If any questions arise about how we’re getting inside, well, I want to see the hull that handles two-thousand tons of reinforced steel with supersonic speed. People might not like to hear it, but that is going to hurt even if it’s not a Cutter.”
10 Aug 2023, 4:38pm
'Think you could turn that carriers defense turrets to our favor once onboard? That would certainly help us keep the support fleet occupied. Those things can punch through a reinforced corvette like butter. It would be real good to have them fighting for us rather than against us. Might be a good use of the limpets prior to our boarding attempt.'

The comment came about randomly and I found myself staring blankly at the wall when I realized what I had said. It was just crazy enough to work. Carriers wouldn't be so viable if they couldn't at least defend themselves. I then turn to Meowers and smile small amount. Genuine as it is it isnt enough to hide my other overwhelming emotions. At least not fully.

'Disposable cutters are kind of my thing. Gutamaya thanks me for my business. I have gone through 4 or 5 in the last 2 years. After the second one the financial sting dissipates.'
10 Aug 2023, 4:45pm
“One of us will have to be the sneaky type, and I’m not sure any of us are. In ships, anyway. Unless I strip all my weapons… and shield boosters… out from the Corvette, it’s basically always going to light up like a star on anyone’s sensors.”

I tried to think about options for a moment, but none of the ships I had and that I would want along for this task would do that job particularly well.

“So… anyone have any suggestions for someone who can cover that role well? I’m not really interested in flying the recon craft in what will inevitably become a real slaughterfest. I can cover the link to turn the turrets against those they are supposed to defend, though.”
10 Aug 2023, 4:47pm
"Hmm..." I spread my hands, "I guess, meanwhile, I'll be filling a backpack with ammo. And coolant liquid. And field medkits. Whatever we're going to need there. So that if you say 'enemy in that direction', I could just delete that direction, you know."
10 Aug 2023, 5:04pm
'I'll do it. I can get in quietly and get out before they know what hit them. I'll have no weapons and or shields but the less I have to worry about power wise the better. I can have a recon Imperial Eagle delivered within a couple hours.'

The easy part would be getting in. The hard part getting out in one piece. Eagles are notoriously fragile ships but they are nimble and can be extremely quick if upfit properly. I was good with a gun but sneaking around that was easy. Keep my temps at near zero turn off FA and "coast" to my target, pop a limpet then get the hell out as fast as I can. I could patch the signal over to the looming corvette and hopefully be out of their line of fire and cold again before they could react properly.

Meowers So that if you say 'enemy in that direction', I could just delete that direction, you know."

“Yeah, I’ll just handle the precision work once we’re out on the carrier. Assuming there are going to be any targets left to pick off. And you might want to stay out of my firing line - that railgun does not discriminate. You also don’t really want to know what it will do to your internals.”

I yawned, suddenly.

“Yeah, I really needed more sleep. Anyway, I still have an idea how to keep the support fleet busy, even without the carrier’s turrets, but it might be… uh… risky.”

"Yup. Like I said... It's better to have options, those cards up your sleeve to choose from. Anyway, messing with turrets' IFF sounds like a great thing to do too. Like, why should we risk our own arses and waste our own ammo."

Then, hearing about Kasumi's way of keeping the hostile ships busy, I nodded, thinking that it was up to her to say or not.

Jenna Marquez
'Sure she did. I remember every curve and feature of her.'

'She had a cybernetic shoulder replacement for her right shoulder after Melli's mother tore her arm apart. Scarring ran down the length of her right arm. She had a royal ID chip implanted once we got married. She also has a uh..... a modified neural implant. Hmmm she always wore a blood orange scented perfume. Such a sweet scent for a sweet woman.'

"Like, wow, that's great, you know. If we find the perfume that'd help too. Like that stuff can linger. So, with everything you've told me, and like, providing I build a good chemical model, I sould get, even a stock sensor, up to 90 - 95% accuracy through a standard hull"

"With that, you'll like, know where to go before you breach. The details on the royal ID chip would totally help too. The ship can't detect it, and you need to be real close, but I can mod your personal scanners to look for that chip, and boost the range to about a hundred meters for that chip alone. But like, don't be surprised if the asshole has removed it. I'm told he's an ultra-dick, and not new to this game"

With renewed confidence in her idea, Willow gathered as much chemical evidence of Silvia as she could, listening to the women make a plan to board, and escape from a carrier.
10 Aug 2023, 5:53pm
Willows input drags me away from the conversation. I look around the room which shows signs of a rushed departure, as if some form of emergency had arisen abruptly. I walk carefully into the room and search for the perfume Silvia used and found a small vial of it. I held it close taking in the scent.

As soon as the scent profile hits my nose all manor of control I had over my emotions dissipated. I let out a short heartbroken cry quickly trying to collect myself. I hand the perfume over to Willow in order to prevent any sort of contamination. Through blurred eyes I search for anything to help us build a chemical profile for Melli as well. I grab one of her toys and look to Willow.

'That little fox is also a good way to find her. They are nearly inseparable.'

Jenna was having a break-down, but Willow, usually compassion, couldn't bring her self to care for Jenna at all. Jenna had proven more than once, that she didn't give a shit about other people trying to use the bar for a drink. When she turned up, good people left. Jenna seemed totally oblivious to being the toxic element in the environment. It was amazing that someone as nice as Silvia had married such a person. They did say opposites attract, and maybe those two were a good example of that.

That didn't mean Willow was brave enough to tell her what she was thinking, so she just ignored the woman's tears and talked about the job.

"Oh yeah, not so Smelly Melli. A unique animal sent will, like hang around on Silvia even if Melli isn't with her right now. That's 96 - 99 percent. Almost perfect"
10 Aug 2023, 6:19pm
'Thank you for this.'

Those were the only words I could manage to speak. I didn't expect any sort of consolation or kindness. Not after my recent actions. The fact that anyone was willing to even tolerate me being around was more than I could have ever asked for.

I had a lot to make up for. And it would take time to show everyone I wasn't that monster everyone saw. I wasn't with Silvia because I was cruel, or psycho, or fiesty. She chose me because I had a soft side. A side that very few people had ever seen. Jenna was the monster under the bed and Venus was the rose that only ever stuck you if you disregarded its obvious thorns.

I stood up straight and proud, wiping away the tears. I took a deep breath and offered a bow then proceeded to the doorway where I stopped and stood silently. Watching as Willow worked away at trying to create a chemical profile of both Melli and Silvia.

Vasil sat quietly at the bar, watching a few of the CQC matches, having essentially been told his advice and input was not required. It did not bother him. After all, people can take or reject advice as they see fit, particularly unsolicited advice. But there was some small amount of satisfaction when he saw Willow come back to essentially do what he mentioned she could likely do to help--find something that most others could not.

He finished his second bourbon and was about to order a third when there was a small chirp in his ear bud from the Onoarea’s COVAS. He tapped the comm button on the collar of his flight suit and acknowledged the message in his ear with the direction, “Understood. Inform passengers that departure for Emerald is in 2 hours and to be in the boarding lobby thirty minutes prior. Inform Luna of arrival. Start pre-flight check, routine one-five.”

Vasil closed the comm channel, paid his tab and started to leave. At best those involved with finding Silvia were casual acquaintances. A few drinks, or dinner being the deepest connection. No loyalty. No friendship. Not even the potential for business profit that he could see. No reason to be further involved. Yet he found himself considering what might be done to help Jenna. It was not that she was an Imperial, or had potential connections that could be useful, but that there was a genuine pain that reminded him of losing someone.

As he exited the bar, he tapped the comm button on his collar. “Jefferson, I need to find a ship in port and establish a secure channel…”

With everything from socks to swabs from the toilet taken, Willow had everything she'd need. Now she needed time in the med bay, but before she went there, she wanted to talk to the rescue committee.

"So I guess I got everything I need, but it's like, gonna take me a few hours to refine it, and like, another hour or so to compile a program for a covas"

She felt weird talking to an AX pilot, and obviously experienced space adventurers about doing what they do, but she had some info about carriers they didn't seem to be taking into account.

"But um, do you mind if I tell you a little about carriers? Coz um, so far your plan is borkred and your ships are gonna get destroyed as soon as they know you're not on their side. So if you know already, I'll like, just go ok?"
10 Aug 2023, 6:54pm
'Shoot little Widow.'

The term was not intended to be insulting infact the term was more centered around the vibe Willow gave off. Realizing she might take it poorly I emphasize.

'I don't mean it poorly. Your vibe gives off black widow vibes. You know spooky but beautiful.'

Anything was appreciated to keep everyone alive. That was the goal after all.

'Don't hold out. Any and all information you can provide us is greatly appreciated.'
10 Aug 2023, 6:59pm
Willow ThornCoz um, so far your plan is borkred and your ships are gonna get destroyed as soon as they know you're not on their side.

“On that front, we decided to follow through with your idea to use a limpet to hack the turrets from the outside.”, I replied.

“Since I may have more experience than I should with breaking into databases, doing that will be child’s play. No turrets means a much easier approach for us. Not so much for the pirates that are going to be getting shot by them. But if you’ve got any other ideas, let’s hear them.”

‘A swarm of Thargoids would also give them one hell of a headache.’, I added in my thoughts.
