General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Kasumi GotoI looked to Meowers, with a look saying ‘This isn’t going anywhere’.
I backed down and sat on an edge of an empty table behind me.

"Ow. That's... That's heavy", I said quietly with my thoughts running circles and my vision focused inwards. 'Losing control of your own life', 'facing adversity' and 'being publicly stigmatised' were things I knew about.

"Is that what you wanted to tell me?", I asked Kasumi finally, in a neutral, calm tone, trying to show her that I mean no harm and aggression. "We might still talk about that later if you want."

"Fucking Azimuth...", then I added quietly. "I knew no one should've trusted those maniacs."

"So... Now, we have some information. Maybe it's better to figure out what to do with it."

Jenna Marquez
'Only took 2 finger nails to get that information. Kind of sad if you ask me.'

"On the contrary, I prefer not having to fight. Especially since you decided I deserved more sedative."

I wrote down the location in a file somewhere, then typed up a short message to Willow.

Sorry for starting another mess in the bar. I swear I'm not trying to do that on purpose. That woman has just constantly been getting on my nerves for the last day or so, and I had enough of it.

Anyway, I got her to calm down again... a little. Finally got some info about Silvia's whereabouts out of her. Hoping to have her back soon.

If you still care to have me around(won't blame you if you don't - I'm too much of a trouble magnet), feel free to ask me to meet up somewhere. Preferably in a place that doesn't have fights starting in it 9 times out of 10.

- Kasumi

I hit the send button, deciding it was already getting a little too long for a 'short' message, leaving out the bit that I'd explain my situation to her if she so wanted. Though my expectation was that it seemed more likely I wouldn't get much of a response, or at least not a positive one. With that done, I turned my attention back to Jenna.

"Are those idiots at Azimuth really so stupid to try pulling the chips out of both of their heads? That's going to both kill them and not tell them much of anything. Silvia did tell me that the stuff only worked with her, and that those chips wouldn't be compatible with anyone else. Or something like that. Can't say I'm smart enough to understand it all."

Meowers"Is that what you wanted to tell me?", I asked Kasumi finally, in a neutral, calm tone, trying to show her that I mean no harm and aggression. "We might still talk about that later if you want."

My legs had started to feel strange and heavy, as if they were bloated and weighed down, likely as a result of the substance I was hit with, so I reduced the strength of the mag boots to a level where I could walk comfortably, and followed Meowers to the table, dropping down on a couch to let it take the weight of my body. Then I answered her.

"In a way? Yes." I let the response sit there for a moment. "It's not extremely in detail, but it's more or less accurate to the latest and greatest predicament I find myself in. Ignoring that whole mess with Silvia, anyway."

'Nerve agent. And here use this. It will counteract the chemicals. Sorry but I needed to be sure you wouldn't launch me into next week.'

I walk over and toss a stim pen into Kira's lap. I figured that a better gesture of sportsmanship than just jamming the stimulant into her thigh.

'Oh only give it a short burst otherwise you'll likely be running laps around the habitation ring.'

I step back away from Kira and take a seat. Something felt really wrong in my lower back, whether that was the ambush by that raider/ pirate guys goons or having just been tossed out of the bar, I wasn't sure.

'OK not as springy as I used to be.'
02 Aug 2023, 10:32pm
I landed on the couch next to Kasumi and felt... That weight of the recent events fading, even if for a short moment. Yeah, you can stay focused and energetic for a while, but when you finally get a chance to relax, that contrast might be surprising. Like, you realise how tired you are.

"Fucking Azimuth, I'd say again. So... I guess it's wise of you to keep that secret. Hoomans can be... Judgmental. Especially if they're arseholes. And, in my books, arseholes form the bulk of humankind. And pampered, bigoted, insufferable arseholes whose only sources of knowledge about how cruel this world can be are censored movies and GalNet shows, are the worst. Their little turd brains simply can't conceptualise what happened to a certain person and why they can't live 'normal' now."
02 Aug 2023, 11:14pm
I took the pen and lightly pushed it into my neck, removing it quickly to avoid being turned into a hyperactive sports machine. Then, I dropped it on the couch, not really caring where it went after that, beyond not going near my body.

"They're also more interested in bitching to you about why you're not doing anything with your 'abilities' to 'help' the war effort. Like understanding an alien hivemind can just be done at the snap of a finger because you've got their tech in your head. If it was that simple, we'd have long figured out why the Thargoids are here already."

I sighed.

"I don't like talking about this here. Too many people thought I was just trying to make myself look important when I was more open about it, so I wouldn't have to hide it. What a great plan that was. Earned me lots of ridicule and not much else. And some ridiculous idiots who thought I was trying to devalue what Seo is. Like, what a way to tell me you don't care about her as a person. All just about what she can do to help stomp the Thargoids out of existence, because that's worked so well in the past."

I shook my head again.

"You want the details, everything about me right now, it won't be here. Since apparently, forcibly living with Thargoid tech in your body, while removing it would kill you because some assholes couldn't have their 'test subject' gaining its own will, means you're a collaborator to them. If that was the case, I would've been sitting on that megaship with those Far God fanatics when they sent it right next to a Maelstrom."

Jenna had completely left my mind by now, to the point that I didn't remotely care to even look that way. I had what I needed from her, and wouldn't care for a dust grain if she was on the other side of the galaxy right now.

"Yeah... I totally understand that. People just can't stop thinking that being open about stuff is a trendy way to grab more attention or look important or special or whatever and you'd better turn it off instead, live without dramatising, find yourself something to be busy with, blah blah blah. Idiots. And then, those Thargoids and all that madness surrounding them and events related to them."

I sighed deeply.

"Experimenting on people is just fkin horrible. Especially if it's irreversible. Another shit point to Azimuth on my personal shit-o-meter. You know... For me, humans are mostly arseholes. But even those arseholes deserve a chance. Maniacs like Azimuth, however... If that kind of humanity wins, then this war is lost."

"Ah, I guess, yeah, if you want to talk about that, it's better done in private. I was just about to invite you aboard my ship, since, um, you told me to lead the way and I obviously don't know where yours is. So, I was just about to do so when Jenna arrived. Anyway... A coffee, maybe? Old-school kind of waking up?"

'I'll uh be leaving. Station security will likely be wanting me off station for a while. I've been enough of a menace to society for one day. Please if you can get Silvia home safe.'

I stand from the seat I was in. My movements awkward and obviously painful. I was definitely going to need a check up after all of this. My adrenaline now wearing off had me feeling all of the beatings from the last couple of hours.

'Like see you around. Oh and yes fuck Azimuth. Stupid bastards are the reason we are in this mess.'

I hobble out of the bar and head to the docks leaving the station far behind. I didn't know where my destination was but it wasn't near anything of importance. The thought of Silvia being in mortal danger ever looming in my mind.

"Damn it all. I have to help her. Even if it is a painful experience to explain the reality of what happened."

The thought is the last one I have as I drift off to sleep in some unknown system some several jumps away from Inara and far away from the threats looming in the dark.

“Well, she really goes from ‘You’re the most worthless and vile thing in the galaxy’ to ‘Please help me find my lost wife’ rather often quite quickly.”, I remarked, then turned my attention back to Meowers.

“I don’t even know who to blame more. Azimuth for creating the circumstances that put me into this fucking mess, or the Thargoids for not letting me die and putting their shit into my body for… god knows what reason. I’d rather have been dead than be forced to live with them in my head. I can’t even control it, or what those things all over my body do to me. I guess I should put more blame on Azimuth for making it impossible to live without it all.”

I sighed, still feeling uncomfortable about bringing the subject up in this place.

“No coffee. I hate coffee. Rather be tired than have to put that stuff in my mouth. No idea how anyone manages to put it down. I was about to suggest we walk out, so I don’t have to look at that stupid woman anymore.”

Kasumi Goto“Well, she really goes from ‘You’re the most worthless and vile thing in the galaxy’ to ‘Please help me find my lost wife’ rather often quite quickly.”, I remarked, then turned my attention back to Meowers.
"Yup", I shrugged. "Her behaviour is... Rather dangerous, and mostly for herself. I, kind of... Know how does it work, though I doubt she's going to listen to me that long without trying to attack me."

Rubbing the back of my head, I continued, "The situation itself is continuously destabilising her, she's looking... Stuck in that 'fight or flee' mode that, originally, naturally, wasn't supposed to last long. It's an emergency mode. And, the more it lasts, the more damage is being done. Uhhh...", I exhaled, finishing the sentence. Yep, there were significantly more variables in all that, though it might take hours to analyse and explain.

"Yup. That might be a solution. Cosy ship interiors, I guess, should do fine. Yours or mine? I have a FDL in the hangar."

“Unless you want to wander across the landing pad to the elevator at the front of a Corvette, and through the corridors of that thing, I suggest going into yours.”

I stood up.

“Jenna… Venus… whatever you decide to call her, I don’t even know what to say about her. I’ve been through more shitty stuff than I’d care to admit, but I’m not sure it ever got to the point where I swung between distress and getting super pissed off at the slightest thing within a few minutes. Honestly can’t figure out how someone would act like that. Anyway, want to go?”

The pen that was supposed to neutralize the nerve agent had kicked in by now, so I didn’t feel particularly bad anymore. But I still felt like I didn’t want to see anything of ‘Jenna’ for the rest of my life, anymore.

"Hmm... Yeah. Though, responses and coping mechanisms that our minds develop to keep us alive through shit are tightly connected to our personalities, the people we've been before that started happening. And we don't know what kind of person she was before. Now, her mind tells her to do this, that acting like this would be the 'right thing to do'. And the longer she acts like that, the deeper the roots of that behaviour go. And it's going to be a difficult thing, to make her really believe that such behaviour isn't going to do any good to her. Especially if she's getting to the outcomes that are acceptable to her, acting like that, and, when this all ends, she might stick to that demeanor thinking, like, 'I can get things done only that way', and... That's not how you want to re-adapt to more peaceful times."

Caught myself standing next to the couch and talking, making vague gestures.

"Um. Yeah, anyway. Let's move."

“I can’t say I’m much better at it. God knows I fucked up so much, when I was completely out of it a few years ago.”

That was all I wanted to say to that particular subject, at least, for now. I caught Meowers standing there, just looking at me.

“You’ll have to lead the way, because I don’t know where your ship is. And it’d be a bit weird if I was the one being followed by someone twice as… uh… big, as me.”

"Sure, let's go", I nodded. Wasn't the first time when people commented on my size and weight, but, I guess, that's the common shared experience of powerlifting&pizza enthusiasts. And being quite far from what people conventionally call 'slim and feminine' wasn't something that bothered me.

*Liquid addresses the Barkeeper* Barkeep, its been a long day. Have Ye any Orrerian Vicious Brew?

*the Barkeeper shakes his head*

*Liquid Replies* Well that's a damn shame, I'd Love to have some from me Home.... but I reckon... I'l have an Old Sol, or a spot of Silver Sea Rum if ye have any.

*the barkeeper raises his head* Apologies to you sir, I have the Old Sol but no rum apparently.

*Liquid Replies* Aye, an Old Sol will do fine. I just want a drink and *mumbles to self* to forget the worries of Orrere

My hands - or rather, my entire body - had finally come down lightly from the unsettling experience of what could best be described as Thargoid boarding action, but my mind was far from over it, thoughts and barely controlled emotional responses ranging from fear to anger cycling through at an unreasonable pace, all contained on the inside, with the exception of the way my eyes darted around, hyper-alert at even the slightest of movements.

A buzz from the wrist computer, placed above the black Dominator suit - not recognizable as such - momentarily disrupted a state of extreme tension that hadn’t been broken since it’d set in.

Message from Ina Muir

Hello there. Wanted to see me? I'm back at Citi, in the hangars, sitting in my ship at the moment.

There was only so much capacity my brain had to spare while still processing the encounter it had just been through, and it showed in the brief response given.

Ok. In the bar. Not happy right now.

I began to skim through news and other reports after sending the response, but my state was not conducive to picking up much of any information at all.
