Elite roleplay: The galactic bar

INGABA (Inara Galactic Bar)

Welcome to the swankiest bar and most popular bar on station. There are various tabled and seated cubby holes that patrons can hold private conversations as well the main bar top where all assortments of drinks and bar food can be ordered up. On the back of the bar on various shelves, from all over the galaxy, the fines and rarest ales preside. next to the impressive collection are several screens that can usually be seen playing adverts or the CQC championships.

It is the most prominent choice for meeting up with other pilots to discuss business discreetly, whatever they may be...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Kasumi Goto“Tell me you’ll stop that idiot from trying to claim the ‘bounty’ if she gets funny ideas again. Not too interested in having to break her arm. And if you’re interested in the ‘why’, that’s not something I’ll talk about in public.”
"Of course. At least if she tries to do so with me being around", I shrugged. "I've almost no idea what's happening between you two, except things you said to each other. But if Silvia is in danger, I'd like to help with... something."

"It's even more unlikely now that I'm getting any useful information on Creamy from this guy", I nodded towards Vodan and his quite archetypically-looking 'reinforcements'.

"Let's just keep things quiet. There's been enough trouble lately.", I chose to say. "Think at least one of us can appreciate that, considering the mess that often gets stirred up around here."

I threw a meaningful look at Willow to support my statement.

"And you want to know what's going on behind me and that crazy blue-hair, like I said - not a subject I'll discuss in public. Not that I know anywhere else on this station where I would talk, someone's ship or an apartment with no cameras aside. But that mess with Silvia, can't really do anything until I know where they went with her. But I'll be tearing down hell itself when I do... speaking of that, I guess I've got to do the interrogating myself. Was really hoping to avoid that... maybe I'll do it later."

I finished my fruit juice and washed the remaining taste out of my mouth with the water, but remained seated. I didn't particularly feel like going anywhere just yet.
01 Aug 2023, 3:51pm
"Sure", I nodded, taking a seat at the table nearby and lighting up another cigarette. "Anyway, your silent friend here is obviously injured and another outbreak of people's short-fused tempers can't do any good to her."

"I'd... kind of... Like to know, if you don't mind sharing at some moment. Though I don't know any places here without cameras, except, phah, shady toilets you really don't want to discuss important things in. Maybe your ship. Or mine. Yep, I have assigments to do, but they aren't that time critical. I guess it has nothing to do with that Maelstrom Party started by Silvia and me."

"And you're right, any serious talks are better done somewhere else. Not in the bar where people go to get hurt."
01 Aug 2023, 3:52pm
"Eat a dick Bell" said Vodan getting unsteadily to his feet. "What took you so fucking long?"

He leaned on the bar looking around until he spotted Meowers.

"That'll do" He said wobbling his way over to them. "Just watch my back and relay info on Baby-Face"

Six carriers, each with full fleets of ships had left this area a short time ago. Raiders didn't play nice with each other, but they did talk about people operating in their territory. With the bar girl being taken between here and Sol, there was a good chance some one in Vengferfields' organisation knew something.

“Silent friend? That would describe me pretty well when I’m not in a chatty mood, too.”, I remarked into nowhere.

“Anyway, the reason she - Venus, Jenna, whatever - is pissed at me is because of Silvia going missing. Mostly, anyway. That slaver guy who kidnapped her is the same one that… nearly, killed her and basically turned their lives upside down. Apparently, I was supposed to stop it from happening after taking two shots of a medical-grade narcotic in the space of an hour. Unwillingly, I might add.”

I took a breath.

“The other half… I have a guess why she’s constantly trying to wind me up and put a hole into her face, but that goes into the ‘Won’t talk about here’ territory. Especially since I don’t want to drag anyone else into my mess… nevermind someone with a broken arm. Which, I might add, I am a little curious about how exactly it happened.”

There was a lot going on all at once, but Willow was kind of boxed in. With the AX pilot on once side, and the raider guy on the other, Willow felt like she was looking at people on the next floor. It was like her older brother and sister were going to tease her about being short again.

"So,er, I was, or like wasn't looking out you know? I was out on the back end of the station with my team, using the yellow and black stripy, Keep Clear.." said Willow air quoting either side of her head with one hand "..guard rails as a hand hold"

"I mean that was fine until a few hundred tons of solar array was pushed into place, like, being guided to its mount by the guard rails"

She stroked her arm, looking down, a little embarrassed to have made such a stupid mistake.

"If it wasn't for Ephrain's quick action, and his fancy new exo-pod, like, my arm would have been crushed just below my elbow"

The woman behind the raider guy reminded her so much of the sister Willow had lost, she couldn't help glancing at her. The woman had moments ago done the security team's job for them, so the glances were from eyes facing the table and only lasted for the briefest of seconds. The comforting hardness of the glass knife felt warm and tempting against Willows leg.

Vodan"Just watch my back and relay info on Baby-Face"

Seems like just some random bounty hunter. No special information well that is a far as the name Jenna would go. The name Venus Duval though oh boy does that have some juicy stuff.

Rogue imperial duchess. Charged with murder, banished from the empire, disowned by the royal family, former Special forces Imperial Navy. Though her file shows deceased. No active bounties, no hits. Honestly I think this was a case of wrong place wrong time.
01 Aug 2023, 6:40pm
“Ouch. Glad you made it out of that in one piece, at least. Sounds like it could’ve been a lot worse than just a broken arm.”

I decided to not go into the subject further, seeing as it was a clear source of embarrassment for Willow, and she seemed to be somewhat uncomfortable currently.

“Hey, if you need some space, just say it. I know what it’s like to just want… how can I put this, quiet? Or just not having anyone around to bother you.”

(OOC: Mild U16 spoiler)

Right as I said that, a news screen flashed flashed up with a broadcast claiming that the Dedicant megaship had been found, in a system controlled by the Thargoids.

“Well, that really is not surprising at all. To me, anyway.”, I remarked. “Anyone else?”

"Ow. Glad you were lucky to have that man around to cover you", I replied, ordering another coffee via the terminal. "I was a tech myself quite a long ago... And, looks like, your own health is the only thing you can truly rely on in that line of work".

With other pieces of conversations reaching me sparsely through the usual bar noises, I focused on the progress indicator showing the readiness of my order, guessing that, with the fight over and mess cleaned up, they possibly can bring my cup here to me. Noticing Vodan approaching, still wobbly from the knock-out, I nodded towards him, addressing to the woman in the black hood again.

"Yeah, I think, if you want to tell me more, we should do it elsewhere. Too many ears. Though... Now I have more pieces of that puzzle. Still useless anyway, without the information, and I'm not quite the right person to do stealthy searches or hacks."

“Yeah, I’ve got the sneaking around part covered. Don’t worry. Although, I guess, I wasn’t quite so sneaky around the base I poked in and set loose a whole bunch of wild creatures captured for illegal trading… while basically shutting the entire place down at the same time.”

I dwelled on the memory for a short moment, quite amused at the thought of the chaos I had caused.

“Anyway, if you really want to know, call me to your ship. Or you come to mine. Your choice. Name’s Kasumi. Kasumi Goto.” My Japanese accent shone through fully as I attempted to pronounce the name correctly. “Don’t feel bad about forgetting mine. I might have forgotten yours, too.”

A news screen flashed up with a broadcast claiming that the Dedicant megaship had been found, in a system controlled by the Thargoids.

“Well, that really is not surprising at all. To me, anyway.”, I remarked. “Anyone else?”

"So yeah, it's like, totally not good, but as long as the Goids stay away from here, I don't mind. I mean space is real big right? So like, there's room for every one, and Colonia is only a few days away you know?"

All the madness seemed to be over, and Willow was picking up some real drama; stuff way better than what was on the holos. Besides, the room up here had started to feel like a cell after a few days

"And yeah no, I'm good right now. It's like, I need another hand, and all the people willing to lend me one seem to be in here"

Vodan looked at Belladonna with a puzzled expression.

"The barmaid is a rogue imperial duchess? How do you get a rouge nobel?"

Bell blinked. Maybe Vodan had taken one too many knocks to the head. "No, you asked about the woman that put you down, not the barmaid"

Still confused Vodan sat down "Well I don't give a fuck about her, I'm trying to find out about Owl-Eyes"

Vodan sat next to Meowers and smiled at her for a moment because he had completely forgotten why he had been looking for her.

"Umm, if the Hooded-Mood here can tell us what she knows. .. Including Owl-Eyes real name, someone in the master's collective may know something useful"

He was still looking at Meowers when he was supposed to have turned his attention to Kasumi. Eventually his eyes settled on Willow.

"There you see!" he pointed at Willow "I told you. Mini-Belladonna!" he chatted cheerfully as if had just found a sweet kitten.

“And yeah no, I'm good right now. It's like, I need another hand, and all the people willing to lend me one seem to be in here"

“Well, as long as you’re fine, you’re welcome to stick around. Definitely could use the company right now.”

I decided not to mention the subject of Silvia missing, and sighed at the news display on the monitor.

“Those nutjobs probably jumped the ship there on purpose. Had to deal with a few of them a while back. They’ll leave you alone, usually, but it’s all ‘doom’ and ‘Thargoids are our saviors’ type of nonsense. I’ll bet they were screaming in ecstasy as their ship got blown up around them.”

I shook my head, already preparing a plan to check the ship out in my mind. Conveniently, the Imperial Vice Admiral who had originally relayed the discovery of the distress signal had also provided me with the system the ship was in - HIP 19600 - as I had partaken in the original search. Its presence there, and the recent mention of Thargoid ships specifically seeking out escape pods, was rather unsettling, however.

“Looks like that stuff’s happening at another of those Maelstroms anyway. Almost as far as it gets from here. Probably still going to take a look at it soon.”

Willow’s mention of Colonia made me frown.

“I don’t think the Thargoids have paid any attention to Colonia. No way to tell if they even know about it. Probably for the best if they don’t. I’d rather not spend the rest of my days as a space nomad, if it comes to the worst.”

Vodan

“She’s called Silvia, Sharpe by family name. Still don’t think any of your guys have a connection to the idiot that decided to take her.”

'She is not imperial by the way.'

I return to the bar hands raised to show I had learned my lesson. No weapons were present save for a single combat knife. Station security was gracious enough to allow me to stay until my business here was concluded.

'Look no hard feelings bro but uh don't talk about Silvia in that way. She is a respectable woman and deserve to he treated as such.'

I was fully expecting anything to happen at this point but I knew the only way to get any answers around here at this stage were in this bar. Silvia had made quite the impression on everyone here and that meant what Meowers had said was true. I would have better luck asking for help rather than hunting this man down on my own.

'The man you would be looking for is Marcus Diaz.... good luck finding anything on him. Man covers his tracks and then some. Always ahead of the chase.'

I slowly reach down and pull out my data pad. I open up my account and look at Belladona.

'Who do I need to send the credits to for the uh.... damaged goods.'

I motioned over to Vodan a not so pleased look on my face.

'Who do I need to send the credits to for the uh.... damaged goods.'

"Oi! Talk to the monkey, not the organ grinder" something was wrong with what Vodan had just said, but he couldn't quit put his finger on what.

He felt like he had been on a week-long bender, drinking, smoking and snorting everything he could find.

"And learn to use your mouth words. I was trying real hard not to shoot your fuckin face off. Besides, ya didn't seem to mind that talk last time you were here. Make ya mind up woman!"

Bell had already relayed the information to the Anansi.

"If anyone in the collective knows anything, well get a comeback within the hour, I guess. The name Marcus Diaz maybe known, but that don't equal location" Bell tilted her head towards Willow "Like the girl said, space is real big right?"
