Elite roleplay: The galactic bar

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Here because I had to pick up my ship and talk to a handler about another job." He took a few bites of the pie and tapped his wounded shoulder with the fork. "Picking this up was just a bonus. Docs were not too happy, though. A few days after getting out of one hospital, I am back at another. At least they did not nag me about the Ziprasidone." He stopped pointed the fork at Willow. "Don't ever let 'em make you take that shit," he said with a sudden flash of anger that quickly faded. "It jacks your brain all up and you can't hear so well." Which, for Jim, meant that it suppressed the Valkyries. The docs called them hallucinations, but he knew otherwise.
10 Oct 2023, 10:33pm
"So, the health care us station staff get means we like, don't get given anything expensive. My painkiller was like, two steps away from being my own belt to bite down on when this happened" said Willow holding up her cast.

Taking a bite of her extract topped food, Willow looked for another angel to keep the conversation going.

"So, you're looking for work right? Maybe I could employ you to escort my ship and like, guard me and the food when I get it here. I'm getting kind of l sick of being set on, you know?"
11 Oct 2023, 12:58am
Jim slowly set his fork down, took a swallow of beer and smoothed over his moustache, thinking. He was not quite certain he heard her correctly., but what if he had. An offer. For a contract. From a Valkyrie.

This was only more proof the docs were wrong and that the Valkyries were real. If he had not heard the Valkyrie song, he’d not have rushed into a fight and would not now be considering accepting Willows offer. Not that he needed to consider it.

He pounded a fist on the table, rattling the things on it. “Yes, Willow Valkyrie,” he exclaimed with a broadening smile and grabbed his beer. “My gun is yours and damn me if I don’t keep you in business!” He downed the rest of his big-assed beer in a few gulps and banged the glass back down on the table. If she was drawing heat from people like those they fought in the docking area, Jim had a feeling that business was going to be good.
11 Oct 2023, 11:35am
Meanwhile, deep in an uninhabited part of the station

His enthusiastic table thump made Willow jump and although she was expecting it, the beer mug meeting the table with force made her jump too. Willow was a meek quiet person, and Jim.. Well Jim was not. He was the exact opposite of Willow in many ways.

“Er, like, great, I guess. Um, welcome a bord or something. So, I don’t really know what’s going on with this, you know? Like, we started importing. Oh, by me, I like, mean me and Vee, or Vee and me maybe. Anyway, we wanted to import some food for, like, the staff you know? And I got these messages that are all like..” Willow put on the deepest voice she could. It wasn't very deep.

‘Hay now, you stop ok? I mean it’

“And I was like, whatever, you know? But then Vee came and said, ‘Oh so I talked with some guy, and he’s real pissed. Here’s some money from the company, I’m out’ So, I like go for a flight when I get the big cast off my arm and think, fuck it, I’ll bring a little something something back, you know? Make a little profit with the profits, right? Then those guys that come on my ship are all ‘Willow, time to pay’

“Thats when you showed up, so I guess you're up to speed right?” Willow had a little think about what she had just said.

It made sense to her, because she knew all the details she hadn’t mentioned.

“Um, like maybe you ought to talk to Vee, I mean Vasil, or Mr. Vasilescu. He probably knows more than me. Like, I sent him a message, but he hasn’t got back to me yet”
11 Oct 2023, 10:23pm
“Knowing just complicates things. You don't need to know why someone is angry and punching you in the face. Someone shoots at you, you shoot back until one of you stops shooting. You don’t even have to hit, you just have to last longer than the other guy. But, yeah, overwhelming force helps.”

And that was Jim’s very simple philosophy. There was almost nothing that an abundant amount of determination or bullets could not overcome.

Jim wolfed down the last few bits of his shepherds pie. “Forget that eye-for-an-eye crap. Someone wants to bloody your nose, break theirs. They want to break yours, cut theirs off. They want to cut yours off, shoot them in the face.“
12 Oct 2023, 2:17pm
“Eh, I guess, but like, that leaves lots of people with broken faces, right? Whatever, protecting my face is like, a high priority, you know?”

Sticking the rod connected to the lid of her extract bottle in her mouth, Willow continued.

“So, the food court guys have shifted the cargo, and like, they need more all the time. So yeah, I’ll take Bramble out tomorrow, that’s the ship we just had that like, fight on.. Oh wait, are you fit to fly? How you are doing after your med-bay visit” she asked feeling a bit self-centered.

So much had been going on, Willow had forgotten to check in with Jim. He was so loud and direct; she had just assumed he was fighting fit and ready to go.
12 Oct 2023, 3:35pm
Jim rolled his shoulder. The stretching caused the wound to tingle for a few seconds as the progenitor cells worked to repair some of their recent work that Jim had just undone. “Yep, feels good to me.”

“So, you want me in your second seat, or flying on your wing with the Gatecrasher? She’s not the prettiest python you ever saw but she can give as good as she gets.” Being a mercenary, Jim had to bring up payment, “The usual rate for ops like this is 10% -uh, I mean 5%- of the take for seat-filling, or 5% and expendables, like fuel and ammo, for wing flying.” A contract handler probably would have arranged 10-15% but this was an unusual case they would not understand. A Valkyrie wanted him to fight and that was worth a discount.
12 Oct 2023, 5:40pm
"Oh like, no way man. 10% of this run you net you like, fuel credits or less, you know? Like this is almost charity work I'm doing here"

She felt like this needed some explaining because running a spaceship on CIti wasn't cheap, and cargo runs that make almost no profit on a station that's being rebuilt shouldn't be possible.

"So there was this thing with Citi management going back on meal tokens for workers, but like, they didn't dare cut back on the Imp Slaves meal deal, because the slaves contract holders would have pulled them off the job like" Willow clicked her fingers "that, and like almost half the work force wou.. Ok, you don't need to know all this"

"So I can fly ok with this" Said Willow holding up her cast covered arm "but I don't trust it for any more than dodging interdiction, you know? So like, we'll be hauling food-stuffs, and that's not going to attract pirates. . . Unless they are like, real hungry. If there is any trouble it's going to be in the docking bay, I guess, But I'd feel better with a battle ready Python beside me in case they want to take their problem off station with me, you know?"

"So yeah, it's like a 250 light year round trip I guess, and I want to use as much of your cargo bay as you can spare. I'll pay for ammo; and repairs? Like, It's what I do here, you know? I'll cover them too. So like, all you need to do is work out how many hard credits you need in your account to make that happen, ok?"
12 Oct 2023, 7:40pm
“Gatecrasher can only fit sixteen tons or so, and she’ll only jump maybe 20 or 25 light years at a time when she’s full, but I’ll let you put in her whatever fits.” Having once heard something similar from a Madame, Jim smoothed a hand over his moustache to hide the brief smirk. “And be careful what you promise about ammo and repairs. She’s a missile spitting, plasma slinging brawler who likes to mix it up.” He’d also heard something similar to that as well.

“How about this. You cover what you said, plus a place to shit, shower, and shave. Throw in 500 credits a run and I keep any bounties on asshats we stomp into jelly.”
12 Oct 2023, 8:33pm
500c a run! Was this guy for real? How did he get by on that with a ship to pay for and ammo to buy; not to mention food, toilet roll, and razor blades. Even Citi paid more than that, and they were tighter than a mouses ear hole. Whatever, now Willows ship was no longer a secret, she could stay in the custom living quarters she had made from salvaged Saud Kruger parts, and Jim could have her room on the station.

"Yeah, my Python is a plasma beast too. Can't beat balls of one hundred-K Kelvin for ruining someone's day, right? Got about the same jump range as you too, so that works out. Yeah, so I can stay on my ship, and you can have my room on the hab-ring if you like"

Willow thought about the size of the tiny tiny room Citi had let her rent as an injured worker, and then looked at Jim. Big old Jim.

"Er, then again like, if someone is after me, I guess they know where I live, and like, we know they know my ship, so what do you suggest? You're the expert in those matters, right? Oh, and like, I'm giving you a mill, right off the bat. Like, I spend 500 creds leaving the launch pad, you know? Yeah and, don't even start. My account is padded after I went to the rim flower spotting, and I still think I'm getting you cheap"
13 Oct 2023, 2:09am
“Hey, you’re the boss. Pay me what you like. I just shoot people.”

As for Getting him cheap, she probably could have got him for nothing being a Valkyrie and all. Okay, he knew Willow was not one of the real Valkyries that the docs tried to keep quiet by giving him antipsychotics. She was more of a physical representation in the form of a raven-haired mortician, but she was still a damn Valkyrie as far as he was concerned.

Brain damage. What a load of bullshit. Just because the docs can’t hear the Valkyries does not mean they are auditory hallucinations. The docs don’t hear the Valkyries because they have never been in a situation where the Valkyries would take notice. Docs should stick to their frankenstein crap and sew people back together instead of trying to mess with someone’s brain.

“Assholes,” Jim muttered, briefly locked up in his own thoughts. “I mean, yeah, those assholes probably know where you bunk. So, might be best to button up your ship and bunk there, or switch between yours and the Gatecrasher to keep them guessing. I got an extra crew bunk, but it’s nothing special. You know, a bunk, a head, some personal storage. I do have an armory with lots of guns and things that go boom, but no suits that’ll fit you.”
13 Oct 2023, 3:25pm
"Yeah no, not your ship" said Willow a little too fast "Er, like I mean my ship has a huge cabin, and in zero G it can sleep 4 easy"

Putting the lid back on her extract bottle Willow, started to eat the last few mouthfuls of her Un-meat-able

"So I need to clear up all the blood in the hold, and repair the damage to the cargo racks and Bramble's inner skin anyway. How about you go get what you need, and stay over. Hey, pack some of your choice boom sticks that need some loving too. I like to tinker with stuff, and I need to practice now I got the use of my fingers back, you know?"

She hopped off her bar stool and started typing a message to the guys. They hadn't shown up, so she guessed their shift had got changed at the last moment.

"Oh, and like, sling me your account deets too, so I can like, get you paid"
13 Oct 2023, 5:48pm
"Alright, I'm Gonna have another drink or two then I'll get some things together and see you in a few hours, boss."

Jim watched Willow leave and ordered another beer. It would probably be more than a drink or two to celebrate. After all, he was about to take a job with what amounted to a Valkyrie boss. And the handlers did not have to arrange it, so they would not be taking a cut. Win-win as far as Wild Jim was concerned.

He just hoped he had enough ammo. Probably not. He never thought he had enough.

(sitting boredly at frontline solution's canteen)

- What do you mean't there's no war going on in colonia?
- Well, someone was awfully busy...
- What do you mean't by that, and why you staring at me like this? Oh! You know what? Just pass me a beer.

Quite expectedly, the bar was empty. Mostly, at least, bar a few locals that seemed to be here frequently. Bar staff paid little mind to me, as I waited near the entrance for Meowers. I was more here to meet up, but still kept an eye out for any familiar faces anyway.
