General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Descartes began to realise that it was going to be some time before she would feel completely comfortable amongst people again. 'Social Anxiety', perhaps? Discretely watching the other visitors to the bar she decided that almost everyone looked either suspicious or nervous. And some looked decidedly dangerous.

"You!" A booming loud voice interrupted her thoughts.

She looked up and realised that a scruffy looking wild-haired man was pointing at her.

"You look like you could use a drink, so I am buyin' you one! Or maybe two. Probably a lot more."

All that time out there alone, constantly looking forward to civilization and company. Could he be good company? She was aware of her internal organs gradually being pulled back to their rightful place and was feeling slightly nauseous. Heavy drinking wasn't on her agenda. Nevertheless, not to appear rude, she offered him a weak smile.

DescartesHeavy drinking wasn't on her agenda. Nevertheless, not to appear rude, she offered him a weak smile.

Wild Jim took two beers and two shots of whiskey, moved over to Decartes. "Name's Jim. Those that call me, call me Wild Jim." He slid one of each drink over to Decartes. "You know, anything worth doing is worth doing your best rather than half-assing it. That includes smiling. So either smile or don't. I'm a big boy, I ain't going to be offended if you don't. Just don't do that pitiful, whatever it is you're doing. Unless.." Jim said and paused. "...well, unless your face nerves are all jacked up and you can't help it. Or you are stroking out or whatever."
15 Mar 2024, 10:23pm
I figured I'd join Jim on the red-eye express to oblivion. I ordered a second round, not wanting to leave Wild Jim on his own. "Make it two", I said, when the barkeep served a tall glass of hard stuff and placed it in front of me. "Cheers, Jim", and raised the glass in a toast.

Still feeling slightly uneasy from the brief interaction I'd had with the strange lady, I turned my head to the side and looked at her. My eyes, in combination with a slight gesture from my head, invited her to come a little closer. I smiled, "This is nice stuff... really kicks like a mule, you know, really packs a punch. If your evening has had a rough start, here, take it; you look as though you could do with some unwinding", I said, gently shoving the second hard-drinking-delight the barman had given me, "And make it last, unless, you know, if you can handle two shots at a time, then, by all means, finish it. I'd better pace myself for now", I lied, my plans being to pace myself not at all.
15 Mar 2024, 10:56pm
I felt... a bit uncomfortable, still, seeing that woman I'd bumped into gazing my way, seemingly trying to get me to come over. I'd been considering to make a few vague signs that way, because I did feel like apologizing for the 'bumping incident' a bit more, with a hopefully believable excuse to not let the true reason out, but... social awkwardness was stopping me from doing anything more than shuffle around uneasily, hands placed beside my hips, trying to overcome my indecision, and hesitation. Which, in itself, was motivated by me liking this corner and the relative quiet it provided.

But I kept my look in that direction, anyway, head lowered slightly, displaying mild interest in the way I watched. Though I also didn't... really fancy alcoholic drinks. And it would've been a bit odd to not have any among three people that likely would. All seemed... more than a little older than me, too.

I absent-mindedly ran a hand along the scar that still decorated my right cheek from front to the ear - only partly visible thanks to the hood - while I let the thoughts of 'What to do' run through my head.

HaraldsenMake it two", I said, when the barkeep served a tall glass of hard stuff and placed it in front of me. "Cheers, Jim", and raised the glass in a toast.

"Right back atcha, Blondie," said Jim, returning Haraldsen's toast. Then, to no one in particular, or maybe to everyone in general, he added, indicating Haraldsen. "Watch out for that one. Probably a scrapper when she gets fightin' drunk. Which, is... a good thing, really." Jim downed his shot of whiskey, replying to some conversation only he heard in his head. "Yeah.... yeah. Dirty fightin'. Guard the fruit. Don't want 'em bruised up."

"Oh wow thank you SIR!" I ubruply burst out breaking his conversation slightly. But Jim didnt seem all fazed to loud voices and dont realy think he noticed me saying thank you. "Can i jz-join you guys with this"

I grab my dagger and holster it taking my glass and setting off the stool im seated on. "Hua." I walk over to them wondering if this is a good idea. Im in pain and someone is offering free drinks. How could i not right...

"Hi there madam, Sir..." I stand my in the middle behind them like 4 feet away. Scanning the 2 for info and pulling databases.

"Woah... a Mercenary!" I mutter to myself checking him discreetly holding my head slightly tilted while holding a smile. I find myself locked in going through the info...unable to pull myself back from the databases. I feel my hand tighten around my glass and my smile slips away replaying fight scenarios that victory seemed imposible and yet at the end there is always that that one python left just slowly sailing through the wreckage.

I manage to mutter out a sentence while still halfly distracted. "My name is Kay-Lee .."

Jim noticed Kay-Lee's odd speech and mannerisms, but they did not seem all that strange to him. He supposed that like him, she'd likely been knocked in the head a few times. Amazing what multiple concussions can do to a person. It can give you odd tiks, or impaired speech, or any other little quirk. In Jim's case it tended to lead to what some people called a fearless disregard for his own safety, but Jim called kicking ass.

"Well, Kay Lee, plop your ass down and have a drink. Or a few drinks. I am pretty sure I have a damn good head start on everyone, so you have some catching up to do. I mean... A LOT of catching up." He motioned to the bartender for more drinks.

Things looked like they were getting... interesting, but four people relatively close together wasn't something I felt like standing near, at the moment. And I definitely would have, rather than sitting. Not to mention having to watch people going near me thinking they had more space than was really there.

'Maybe the disguise was... not the best idea, here. But I don't feel like really showing myself either.', I thought, and kept a close eye on where this... 'meeting' would go.

Four strangers was pushing my limits a little, so I first wanted to determine if I did feel like engaging with anyone there. Assuming that they didn't all just immediately run away at my odd appearance. And the man was just a little loud for my preferences, even if the behavior had a certain charm to it. I waved for a waiter while observing.

"Something simple, please. Water will do."

Now I just had to be careful to not spill any on myself by misjudging where my arm was going, but that was easier than not running into someone by accident in a more enclosed space. And convincing anyone looking to help if I did spill something that I didn't need it - or, more accurately, didn't want it, given where that spill was likely to land on my upper body. I'd already had enough awkwardness for the next few hours.
16 Mar 2024, 11:10am
I rolled my eyes at Jim and laughed. "But, seriously, you'd never want to fight a fair fight, drunken or not. Fight dirty, because if your opponent is fighting clean, they're doing it wrong," I replied.

Oh yeah, this was the life. … the great atmosphere in this establishment, the exceptional selection of intoxicant beverages, and of course, the outstanding company…. I thought, with a slight hint of sarcasm. How about a quick game of the silent variety of staring-at-someone-you-just-bumped-into? Alright. Here I go... aaaaaand... now the staring competition has started. My behaviour may not be the epitome of mannered ways, but... oh well. Never let it be said that I'm not open to trying something new and fun! I couldn't quite put my finger on what made me so curious about the strange woman, but it wasn't her white skin - I'm rather pale myself, a consequence of my people living inside an asteroid for generations to escape the sun's merciless rays, though there were nasty rumours that we only avoided the light to hide our sins. However, I would not attach too much importance to these rumours, after all, their originators also referred to us as pirate scum.

"All hail the wild booze party", I murmured, and gulped down my shot. I wasn't sure if anyone besides Jim heard that. I know for a fact that no one else took the shot of whiskey. No harm, no foul. So I lifted a new glass, "Okay, I'll make this quick. A toast: to the dreams that inspire us. To the endless expanses of space and its possibilities. To Raxxla!", I said, upping up the challenge.

Was it wrong or socially indecent to be looking without getting involved... maybe. But I wasn't much one to care for 'social norms' much, and apparently my looks in that general direction were now getting returned by who I'd bumped into.

Something about that woman was making me a little uneasy. Maybe it was the liberal behavior with drinks and the fighting talk. The latter of which I preferred to avoid around here, especially. Or maybe it was something else. So being a piece of background decor until someone moved over to here, felt like my best approach for now. It definitely seemed more interesting, or at least better, than facing my indecision. Seeing how things unfolded in front of me would at least help settle on something properly, rather than... throwing glances at those four.

At least I had the excuse of 'No one else that looks interesting is around'.

"Yeah, Blondie, the Valkyries don't care how you win a fight. A kick in the fruit, a knife in the ear, bullet to the knee, a shove out the airlock, or Queensbury Rules. It's all the same to them." Jim took a swallow of his beer chaser. "But they are sometimes choosey about who they help and who they hurt in a fight, and when you get more than one screeching in a battle, there ain't no telling which side is going to win. If you aint on their list of favorites, or you've pissed 'em off, it's gonna be hell getting out alive."

Jim followed Haraldsen's stare. In most places he frequented, staring often led to brawls, though it did not appear as if the target would be up for such a thing, or that this place drew that type of clientele on a regular basis. "My primary contract is with a Valkyrie that is just as bleached white, though only a wisp of a woman. Hardly what you'd expect a Valkyrie to look like. But, Willow, she's a scrapper when she gets a certain gleam in her eye. And she carts around the dead. Hell, she kept me alive after some huge-assed swede buried a huge-ass axe in my shoulder. And I mean huge-assed as in a freaking viking, not literally huge-assed."

Jim downed some more of his beer chaser and grinned. "That was damn good fight," he mused, fondly.

"So either smile or don't. I'm a big boy, I ain't going to be offended if you don't." Jim had said.

He had a point. I laughed, picked up the frothy beer and drank it in one long swig. Big mistake, it was far too gassy and I let out a large burp. A small group was begining to gather and I let the conversation wash over me until Jim mentioned 'Willow'. My heart skipped a beat. He had all my attention. Willow had saved my life too...

"That's the spirit! I'll give it a solid seven. Could have been an eight or nine if there was more base and it was a bit longer. But damn good effort." Jim grunted. "We god Blondie, here," he said hooking a thumb towards Haraldsen, then indicated Kay-Lee. "And that is Kay-Lee. So, what are we gonna call you? Seven?"

For Jim, if he did not know a name, he assigned a moniker that was easy for him to remember. Much like callsigns, they were often based in some way on the a person's appearance, actions, attitudes, or mistakes. There was nothing disparaging about it. Hell, in addition to "Wild" Jim, he'd managed to collect several other nicknames over the course of his mercenary career including Crash, Hammer, and oddly, Sparkles.

Now two people were staring, or at least looking at me. Made it even more awkward to just... be sitting there, and look back, rather than go and engage with them properly. Though I wasn't quite convinced about the loud man's behavior, falling a little out of my interest range, if not enough to completely discourage me - just a little more hesitant thanks to it. The clearly expressed interest of the woman with which the 'bump' occurred... I couldn't tell what was behind it, but I was generally wary of strangers, in no small part thanks to my unique... 'nature'. So I wasn't sure what to think of it.

Suddenly, it occurred to me that maybe the holo-disguise had turned itself off for some reason. But a downward glance showed me the view was not covered in, uh, breast, so I was fine. But I'd have to make sure no one of those people looked at the couch too closely if I stood up while they observed me. I breathed out in relief, still, hoping it didn't quite give away that not all was as it seemed, on the surface. Or at least was creating the impression of being for something else.

"Descartes."

"Hello everyone. Only7?
Well, it was a start, more conversation than for a long long time. I decided to ignore the short drink -no point i trying to match him drink for drink. Couldn't help noticing that although he look unkempt, he smelt very clean. I allowed myself to smile.

"And where would you be on your scale?"
