General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

It wasn't the voice she was expecting, no tinge of French at all, but he knew her name, and the voice was familiar. Lambast stood to see who wanted her attention.

"Lord Vasilescu" she said with a short bob of a curtsey at recognising the mans older, but not displeasing features "I could repeat your exclamation of mild surprise"

A few thoughts about his reason for being here crossed her mind, then se settled on a likely scenario.

"Administrating manpower personally I assume? Nothing like hands on oversight to see the wheels continue to turn smoothly"

The deal Lambast had struck with Vasil to relocate citizens of her majesty the Princesses systems, so they could take advantage of opportunities no longer offered there, was working well. Lambast had even been privy to a few correspondence from ex-citizens happy to have work again. She'd mention the positive comments to Vasil, time permitting. Currently, she had an introduction to make.

"Lord Vasilescu, may I introduce the ladies and gentlemen of the EOM carrier Chaperone, who are currently enjoying extra leave, and pay, for what turned out to be an easy job"

There was a polite murmur in response and a few glasses raised in greeting. Lambast had a reputation in the company, and most of the crew felt like they were in the presence of someone that would gladly eat puppies dipped in a sauce made from kittens. Besides, it was hard to cut loose with their boss, and her emotionless face at the table.

In a quieter voice to speak privately, Lambast asked Vasil "I should address you as lord should I not? Or is the title held solely held by your esteemed sister?"
10 Apr 2024, 1:19am
"Vasil will be fine," he said, knowing full well he did not answer the question of whether or not he had an actual title. "I don't think the etiquette police will pay any attention to informalities in a place like this."

He had the sense that the general murmuring in response to her introduction, and that none of the crew were within conversational distance of her, meant that the work relationship was strictly business between her and the crew. A few of them actually looked uncomfortable with her attention being directed their way. He, however, was accustomed to interacting with all manner of people from Imperial Senators to street vendors, so was comfortable staying right where he was with her and ordering a bourbon from a passing server.

"This place is not as refined as some of the better establishments on the station, but it serves its purpose well enough to host space truckers and titled nobility. Or, as the case is for me at the moment, chauffeurs."
10 Apr 2024, 9:35am
"I have seen what this place calls class, and I feel justified in saying it offers a poor replica of refinement without understanding what refinement is"

The atmosphere was somewhat stilted. Lambast checked her reflection and found she had forgotten to smile again. Her line about the crew enjoying extra pay, and leave, after an easy job was supposed to be a light-hearted jab at herself and their fortune, but she had probably made it sound like a complaint.

Picking a smile she often saw Kaisla use, Lambast tried to sound a little more relatable.

"Honestly, growing up my idea of a good meal was chewable tea, and brown sauce on my bacon butty, so perhaps my judgment is skewed. I say Vasil, do you find yourself at a loose end currently? "Perhaps you have time for an informal chat?"

"It would be impolite to refuse a lady's simple request for conversation. Even if I did not have the time, I would find it for you." Vasil was not certain whether "informal" meant off-the-record or idle conversation, but given his previous interaction with her, Vasil doubted she found any value in small talk. He supposed that there was something specific she wished to discuss, so to eliminate any forced chit-chat she might find uncomfortable or awkward, he asked. "Is there anything in particular you would care to talk about?"
10 Apr 2024, 2:45pm
"Good, nothing planed, but as we happen to have met again I can at least buy your drinks and probe your general knowledge."

Fetching her glass of gin and tonic from the table Lambast excused herself from the party, and motioned Vasil to follow her to a smaller booth along the wall.

"Let's get business out the way first shall we? On EOM's end, our arrangement is financially negligible, but beneficial in other ways. Given the current state of affairs with systems being rebuilt, I don't see the flow being narrowed any time soon. Are you also satisfied?" Asked Lambast, queen of ice brakes. The same way a Type 9 crashing into an icy asteroid brakes ice anyway.
10 Apr 2024, 3:50pm
Vasil sat in the booth opposite her. "The arrangement is working out well. No complaints with regards to the quality or quantity of individuals being brought to us," he said as the server dropped off his bourbon. "It can be a challenge keeping up with all of the requests for assistance but our planning and relocation teams keep on top of it."

Vasil took a sip of his bourbon. "In fact, since the Emerald Dawn is approaching its passenger capacity, we are considering allocating some of the workforce to one of the new settlements. Speakig of which, how is your little building project comming along?"
10 Apr 2024, 4:34pm
Lamb slumped a little and swirled her clear drink around, watching the liquid climb the glass.

"Stalled, then stopped, and now stuck in a political roadblock. That is why I am here in a round about way. One dose one's unspoken duties as a member of the so called elite, and it comes back to bite you in the ar.. backside"

Sitting upright and making eye contact again, Lambast tried to sound less like she had sequestered Vasil for a good hard moan.

"Now passenger capacity I can understand, and maybe help with. My liner company has retooled most of its craft for evacuation and relocation, but we still have some liners in normal service. I'll give you the contact for the MD's PA. She'll know it was me, and she may find some ships to help you out. Providing EOM hasn't swiped them all."
10 Apr 2024, 5:34pm
Vasil leaned forward, his voice lowering slightly. "Don't worry, I've heard words much worse than 'ass' in places much better than this. You might find it difficult to believe, but sometimes those words are in reference to me."

"You just can't please some assholes no matter how much you butter them up," said Vasil leaning back with a heavy, overly theatrical sigh.

"Unspoken duties are part of the reason I am here with one of the ERS cutters. The grandson of an Executive Board member ran into a bit of a problem and needs a ride back to Emerald." Vasil did not feel the need to mention it was the grandson of Sir Halston DeVey, one of HRH Aisling's advisors. As with most things in the realm of politics, this was a case of doing favors in order to get one. Vasil's sister, Octavia, was more than willing to dedicate ERS assets to gather more favor with Sir Halston.

"Perhaps that is what you need to break your political roadblock, helping someone powerful retrieve a loved one. Or, at lease helping them avoid political embarrassment." He said this mostly as a joke and had no idea how pertinent it might actually be to Lamb's situation.
10 Apr 2024, 6:31pm
"One dose like to keep hard words in the back pocket for hard times, but thank you for the reassurance" Said Lambast taking a sip of her drink.

"It just so happens that I have helped someone powerful, and that is what put the stopper on my towns development. Now I have to retrieve a loved one that is a political embarrassment. Well, just an all round embarrassment really"

"You know what its like I'm sure. Lord DownOnMyLuck comes around, and instead of just giving them credits and calling it a day, we have to offer them a simple job with generous pay, and perhaps a house to use in the mean time, because giving them a loan is just not the done thing. That is what I did, then this lord went missing while under my employ. Now his father, the Count that holds the land next to my family, won't let me proceed with my town until I find the man"

"I feel like a truancy office hunting wayward school children thanks to a friend of mine still missing, and my sister taking so long to respond. Still, we do what we must" Said Lambast in a voice that suggested obstacles were common in her dealings.

"I do hope your ward will be less problematic Vasil"
10 Apr 2024, 8:36pm
"He is resting comfortably on the Alpina, watched over by ERS security, and a bit humbled by his experience." In this case, 'watched over' meant confined to his stateroom with no outside communication. "I think he's learned that dealing with the criminal elements of society is not as easy or as glamourous as the movies make it out to be. Luckily, ERS security was able to collect him without him or anyone else being shot in the process. Once the other passengers are cleared for boarding, we'll be on our happy way. He might not enjoy travelling with citizens who've recently completed their slave contracts, but the alternative is staying behind and having his head turned into a donut."

Spotting the server approaching, Vasil preemptively waved them off before they were close enough to interrupt the conversation with the usual 'How ya doing?' or "can i get you anything else?'

"We knew exactly where to find our package. It sounds like you have an entire galaxy to search."
10 Apr 2024, 9:56pm
"You've been dealing with this systems lawless elements also? I just came from an unproductive meeting with a pirate captain at some air-bike track on a moon a few planets over"

"He has some more recent knowledge of the Counts wayward son, but he wants my assistance with an assault on another pirate before he'll tell me what he knows"

"Honestly! I feel like the off-spring off a Greek god being tested"

Putting on a dramatic voice suitable for a narrator, Lamabst told of The Sevan Trials of Mercy.

"Before I can build my home, I must rescue my lords daughter. However to walk the path of the blind cyclops, I must win the favour of the troll of.. . Craggy.. Features, or some such nonsense"

Closing her eyes and taking a calming breath, Lambast paused a moment to stop her growing disinterest in other peoples problems form showing.

"I don't suppose you know of one Dread Pirate Jade, and the ancient ship, Destinies Jester do you?"
11 Apr 2024, 4:00am
“I have not heard of Jade, but the name might be a pseudonym like Blackbeard or Rickety Tim. The Destinies Jester, though, I’ve heard of. I think the captain was named...” Vasil’s looked down at his drink, brows knitting in thought...”Raymond something? Maybe Rinaldo?”

“Anyway,” said Vasil looking back to Lamb and waving a hand to dismiss further conjecture on something he was unsure of. “The name is not important. What is important is that the Destinies Jester was issued an Imperial Letter of Marque --I don’t know... a century ago or something like that-- and for a long time they were pretty much the most effective Imperial privateers, ever. The Feds put a huge bounty on the Jester that still has not been claimed.”

Vasil shrugged, the gold ERS insignia on the collar of his black flight suit glinting in the light. “But that was years ago. Last I heard, they may have been responsible for hitting a slave transport on the way to Torval Mining. If that is true, they probably violated the marque since Torval and the Emperor are not exactly enemies. That is assuming the marque is still valid after all this time, which I doubt. And if it is still valid, it would had to have been assigned to either the vessel, or as a hereditary marque that the captain could pass down like a title of nobility.”

After a moment of thought, Vasil offered what he considered a more reasonable explanation. “Hell, it could be that the Destinies Jester has new management that does not care about an old marque or understand how it works. It would not surprise me. Pirates tend to be opportunists more concerned with money than duty.”

Lambast listen and drank, nodding on occasion. There were ups and downs given her main objective. All she wanted to do was find out if she had to bring home a moron or a corps, and now she was getting involved in Imperial politics thanks to a greedy raider.

"I see" She looked away while measuring her options. "I do hope the latter is the case. One can not very well attack a hero of the empire on the request of a brigand, and expect to continue holding lands with in her boarders"

Putting her glass down and focusing on Vasil again. Lambast voiced her thoughts just to line them up.

"The title of Marque is Mr Hooders intended acquisition, and if the captain of Destinies Jester has indeed broken the terms of the title, they may have fallen out of imperial protection"

It was a start, but not enough to take an action either way.

"More information is required I feel, and my current irritation is not lending its self to cleat thought. Someone's home is in need of carpet bombing, and I don't much care if its Hooders or Jades at the moment"

She placed her hands on the table and smiled an empty smile.

"That would close more doors than it opens, so I will wait and let a cooler head prevail. Would you care for another?" asked Lambast pointing to Vasil's glass.
11 Apr 2024, 3:12pm
"Sure, I'll take another," said Vasil and downed the last swallow of bourbon. "I'd not want to upset you by refusing and then end up being carpet bombed. That would be inconvenient." The bourbon may not be dry, but Vasil' sense of humor with regard to understatement tended to border on arid.

"I am not sure this pirate of yours quite understands how a letter or marque functions. At least not as I understand them. Generally, they were issued to a specific captain or vessel to operate only against specific enemies of the state for a set period of time, and sometimes only in specific areas of space. Even if the marque was conveyed in perpetuity along with a title, I doubt it would be honored if it was stolen."

"I see the marque as a contract," Vasil continued, binding contracts being almost a religion to him. "You can't change, amend, or transfer it without all parties being in agreement, and breaking the contract nullifies it. Given the Emperor's penchant for law and order, violating the marque or stealing it would likely have consequences."
11 Apr 2024, 4:33pm
Lamb raised her hand and pushed the glasses to the edge of the table once she had a servers attention.

"Same again please. Thank you" she politely requested before continuing her conversation with Vasil.

"Oh please" she said dismissively, with a wave of her hand "Such measures would be reserved for the truly heinous. You do not qualify"

"From what little I know of deeds, or titles of marque, I would be inclined to agree with you. How ever corruption is rife within the court, and some one with enough leverage can achieve something as trivial as putting a new name on an old contract I should think"

"I mean honestly, tell me yon don't know at least two people that have been kidnapped to exsert pressure on someone with influence. Hmm?"

There was a pause while Lambast listed the people she knew that had been stolen away.

"Oh, not including the Emperor"
