Elite roleplay: The galactic bar

On the back of the bar on various shelves, from all over the galaxy, the fines and rarest ales preside. next to the impressive collection are several screens that can usually be seen playing adverts or the CQC championships.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"You did use our conversation to your advantage, mister Vasilescu, and that remains valid no matter what else transpired. That alone is not something I can't see past, nor do I find ambition an unattractive trait in a gentleman"

Lambast had stopped trying to conjure any vestige of humanity. She had been smacked down time and time again, and should know better than hoping old imperial blood wouldn't be in it for them selves. She looked at the screen showing highlights from humanity's latest attempt at genocide, and was reminded she had far more in common with the Thargoids then was healthy. At least they didn't try to make some other bug in their collective look like the unreasonable party.

"What sealed the deal for me mister Vasilescu.." Said Lambast remembering she was in a negotiation she was entirely done with "..was making out that I was somehow lowering the tone of the negotiations by asking for your opinion of the actions that brought us to this point"

"What's more, you are overlooking a golden opportunity that has landed in your lap. You possibly have Lord Goodness within your grasp should you investigate the covas in your possession. With him at your side, alive or dead, you could by pass me and my farther the Baron, and go straight to Count Goodness himself. He could give you more land then the Mercy's ever could"

"Naturally, I would let the Count know how disrespectful you were towards him and his son during our informal chat" Lambast said remembering that she had actually stabbed Creamy while they were at the academy together "But the brigadier and his mother, one of the princesses advisers, are well known for seeing past name calling"

Putting her fork on her plate and pushing the to the side, Lambast got ready to stand.

"Enjoy your hard won prise mister Vasilescu, and this" said Lambast pushing the cake towards him as she stood.

She wondered if he'd get the reference to 'have your cake and eat it'. It was a phrase she had never understood. What was the point of having cake if it wasn't to be eaten? Still, is had something to do with greed, so it was good enough.
05 Jul 2024, 7:32pm
Vasil took a bite of the cake, most definitely having it and eating it, too. He nodded in agreement with her. “I have to admit that you are right on all accounts. Primarily, that I could have bypassed you altogether, negotiated with the Goodness family and probably secured a working agreement with them. Yet, here I am enjoying cake. And though you may not believe it, disappointed with myself for having upset the company it came with.”

Vasil set the fork down. “However, I am left wondering if you have bothered to ask yourself why I am sitting here, not with the Count, and why you, not I, were the one to bring up taking the COVAS to him.”
05 Jul 2024, 8:04pm
"Mister Vasilescu, you playing the I don't care either way card on me, reminded me I am doing all this to avoid a three hour drive from the nearest start port on the dozen or so times a year I visit my mother and farther. The idea for a star port becoming a town was mostly altruistic; creating jobs and homes in a time when those are sorely needed back home. However, that has been blocked by my peers for their own reasons"

"With this being the case, I shall buy a vertabird, and build a small hanger on the back fields. Vertabirds take far less support then even a sidewinder, and have a negligible impact on the environment"

Lambast stopped walking, and turned to face Vasil.

"You see, I honestly don't care. The shame of it is, I was formulating an idea where farther could help you buy land, and from there we could hash out a dela for your city using his name, leaving me to deal with my own project. All I wanted was a little acknowledgment that you had used me, rather then worked with me. Instead you implied I was shallow"

"Good day to you mister Vasilescu"
05 Jul 2024, 10:10pm
If she was willing to just walk away, either Lamb was taking this way too personally, or she might have an alternate means of finding Creamy. No matter which was truer, Vasil realized he’d pushed a bit too much and become too focused on the outcome rather than achieving it.

Of course, her storming out could be a negotiating tactic. Vasil doubted that, though. There was some truth in her statement that she did not care, otherwise she might not have been able to walk away. But Vasil also detected truth in that she had intended the town and starport to be of benefit to those who needed it, and that is probably what he should have focused on.

He knew once she started walking away from the table that he could not salvage this. The logical choice was to go to the Count with the COVAS in order to secure land for a settlement. Or better yet have Octavia go to the Count. It was generally best to have the heads of Imperial families negotiate political deals.

“My apologies for upsetting you, Lady Lambast.” Against all logic telling him to say nothing more, Vasil asked with all sincerity, “Before you leave, I would like to know, honestly, do you wish me to destroy Creamy’s COVAS?”
05 Jul 2024, 10:40pm
Very few people could fathom the depts to which Lambast honestly didn't care. With a cheap, simple solution to her travel worries in mind, Lambast left the bar in silence.

Now the tree hugging hippies had nothing to complain about, she'd simply have to learn how to fly a vertabird and ask her dad if he wouldn't mind moving his vegetable garden down by the stables so she had space for a small hanger.
05 Jul 2024, 11:05pm
Vasil watched Lamb leave. He was unsure what to expect, but no reply was definitely not on the list of possibilities. "Hmph..."

He tapped the ERS insignia on his collar. "Nicolai, stop recording," he told the Onoarea's COVAS and took a bite of cake. It really was very good.

Another day... and another time where I was just wandering around this station because I didn't have anything to do, and no idea what to do with my spare time. So, here I was, checking out the bar again. And it was even more devoid of familiar faces than last time, even if not empty.

I went on in anyway. Might as well get something to drink while I figured out what my brain was telling me to do... and I walked right into one of the monitors broadcasting a news report on the current war status. Or at least the end of one, if not the news segment outright.

"... independent forces have begun to assault Titan Thor already, aiming to render it vulnerable to attack. The Thargoid assault still shows signs of slowing down in favor of defending their three remaining capital ships, with strategists continuing their attempts to determine possible ways for the remaining enemy forces to strike back."

"Aegis, meanwhile, have repeated their intent to send strike teams into designated, formerly populated, sytems, to reactivate a port in them which will serve as a forward base against the Thargoid invasion force, once Titan Indra has been officially confirmed as destroyed, and the war front around Thor has moved inward sufficiently."

"As the tide continues to turn in humanity's favor, and the Thargoids continue to lose ground, it seems there may finally be an end to the war in sight. As always, we will keep you updated on any noteworthy developments."

"Yeah... sure. Can only hope this isn't going to end up making things worse in the long run.", I - unintentionally - remarked out loud. Didn't get any comments, though, and probably just drew more looks from my somewhat disproportionate appearance alone.

Ironically, the advertisement which followed the news segment was "Securing Our Future" by Azimuth.

"Because they've been doing so much in this war, unlike Aegis.", I sarcastically muttered, and began to move toward the bar counter. Had another look around, too, figured I'd maybe see that Willow person again... no luck, though. Might still be busy elsewhere, I thought. Whatever had gotten her attention back in the shop had really 'stung' the woman, and I knew better than to try getting in the way of that kind of focus.

Maybe I'd go check up on that shop of hers again. After a drink. And I had someone to thank for a repair job, anyway, small and simple as it might have been, because the plasma cutter worked flawlessly again, like I'd never used it.

Context

-----

Writer's note - This RP, on the timeline, is about two months after the conclusion of the ongoing Helix RP arc, and is also separate from it. I apologize for any kind of discontinuity in the two narratives because of that separation, and any confusion which may arise when the latter is continued. We simply agreed to put a break into it to allow something for which material has already been created - aka this - to occur, instead of waiting for another month with it due to the depth which Helix (and soon-ish the Dawnbreaker) thing[s| will be gone into.

So, yeah. Or maybe I was just impatient. Hope you enjoy it, anyway.

****

I carefully, but quickly, wandered into the bar, hood drawn well over the head - enough to cast a shadow over the eyes - keeping it lowered to the ground. Holo-disguise was also active, so that'd conceal my ridiculously noticeable shape as well, providing the illusion I was a normal, averagely-sized woman. The hooded appearance also kept attention away, not by blending in, but keeping people distant to me... that, and the way I moved indicated a purpose best not interrupted. It was just as well.

What I was here for - looking for anybody that I knew who could help me with that matter of my missing friend. Anybody that I knew well enough, at least... and that was where the problem arose. Reaching the middle of the bar, I saw nobody. Not familiar, at the very least, observing the faces from beneath my hood.

I sighed. The basics of my plan were already in my head - get to the base, cause a distraction, and then kill everyone and everything that stood in the way. Because Azimuth had invoked my wrath now, and they would absolutely be feeling it... yet causing that distraction required getting in without every alarm in a five kilometer radius setting off, which itself needed something very special - only Azimuth could provide that.

But one thing at a time. I did not want to be doing this alone, and... I had no idea who to turn to. Out of the people that I knew, and remembered... Silvia, I hadn't heard of in months, and somehow felt like a practically suicidal assault on an Azimuth stronghold, bastards as they were, would not be in her interest, even if I wasn't quite sure why. And Jana... was the one who needed to be pulled out of that shitty mess those fucks had pulled her into just for knowing me.

"Torben is getting a bullet straight to the head if I ever meet him.", I muttered to myself, and got ready to move into a shadowy corner, from which I could observe without getting bothered by anybody. It overlooked the entrance, so I would not be missing if anybody entered... and as soon as I had someone, I'd immediately be gone again. I wasn't here for leisure, and definitely would not be stopping for it.

"...abso-damn-lutely. Now fuck off or tell me how the heck am I going to get those millions on this piss job to spend on that sugar-coated piece of crap...", muttered the bartender, putting the glass away and walking to the screen control terminal. Some commercials were tolerable, some even funny, but those new Python Mk2 videos filled every single broadcast channel and were up to fifteen minutes long.

"Go away," he muttered once again, yet a bit more satisfied that time, pressing the button.

The screen flickered for a few moments, and then a new picture appeared: a live news broadcast, on one of the innumerous local channels...

10 Aug 2024, 1:22am
I caught that broadcast just as I was about to begin moving, and... rolled my eyes. Of course, I knew that figure. There was only one person that ridiculously tall I had ever seen with those facial features and that behavior... but I'd - consciously or not - suppressed those memories after a less-than-perfect exchange that ended on a sour note at best. And I wasn't sure if I really wanted to hear of that woman again. Even just seeing a picture or video was enough to provoke some strong sentiments of annoyance.

Yet I saw no other option in this situation. I let out a loud, displeased breath - in part at the display of human idiocy on camera - before moving over to my corner, steering well clear of any of the other people within this bar, not only to avoid bumping into them with the hidden, but very real, enlarged part of my lower body. And, sitting down, I dug up her message address - because I knew I had it - typing up something short and concise, without giving any details.

We need to talk. Now. You, me, nobody else. I'm in *that* place in Inara, find me there.

That was all I wanted to write, and also share over a line which I didn't know how secure it was. If those nutjob fucks at Azimuth were 'listening', and I was almost certain they were, I didn't need to give them anything else. They already had to know I was going to come after them, after my very recent act of bushwhacking a few of their pitiful surface operations.

I had a feeling that, even though I said "Now", it probably wouldn't be too soon that she'd appear here, so I settled in for a bit of waiting, maybe order some water or something to drink, though still no alcohol.

A few minutes passed before I received a relatively short reply, albeit a little longer than my message.

"Hello. I've a little shitshow on my hands at the moment. But I got it, guess that's important. Saw another pile of Azimuth crap on the network recently yet now it has your name on it. Could you please share any details? No worries, my messages are secure. Will reply in an hour, I hope."

Of course, I wasted no time getting another response back.

Yes, it's got my name on it, and you can probably also guess I had a good reason to shoot at their precious trash, because you know me. I hope. Memory still isn't completely out of the wonky zone yet, because I saw your... 'little shitshow' on one of the monitors here, and it reminded me in the first place. Or maybe I didn't want to remember after our 'disagreement'...

Whatever. Just get here, and I'll give you the details. More details. But, of course, it has something to do with those fucking Azimuth idiots and their obsession with Thargoids. Or because they want their hands on me. And it has something to do with that other idiot I call a friend. I don't mean Silvia, because she isn't one. Especially not in that way.

I could do an hour. Enough to eat something, after I got done shitting on Azimuth, figuratively.

For whatever reason, I still felt hesitant to provide all the details, maybe because it was just easier to explain it in person. But hopefully this was at least enough reasoning to explain why it was important.

Here's a little 'off-topic intro' that I decided to drop here, instead of scattering the posts over several threads:

I was finally able to read Kasumi's reply only after the loading ramp of one of our old T-7s slammed shut, with most of the protesters packed inside. Almost all of them, in fact, because a smart person would've left that place immediately after the rock was thrown. Or, to be correct, had never taken part in anything like that. A short trip to the nearest major starport in 'human cargo'-class accommodation, and they were bound to face the painful bureaucracy of their respective governments, communities, companies, anything but us. Someone else's pain in the arse but not mine. Took an entire garrison of marines, plus ground crews, plus even some of the pilots, to form a circle and slowly herd the crowd into the transport. And some verbal and physical pushing. And a bit more than an hour of time.

So, my reply was short.

"Holy craps. Now I think I understand your message to them. Departing at once. Hope the flight won't be long."

When it rains, it normally pours. In my case, it seems like it shits. First, the damned Titans, then the protesters, and now that friggin Azimuth doing Azimuth things, instead of simply dying in a pile of cow manure as they, frankly, should.

I couldn't exactly tell how far I was from Inara until I actually got into my cockpit and set the route, and, from that moment, the best thing that could've been done by me was jumping as fast as possible and, hells, jump I did, pouring that chemical FSD-boost concoction on every single part of the route like I've had an endless source of raw materials.

Normally, I don't endorse flying naked. Yet I know there are some funny nudists who like to float in zero G in their cockpits next to stars. And, I'm not one of them. I swear. Even if I had to be, for a short period of time: somewhere around the middle of that route I unexpectedly realised that I was still wearing the same uniform jacket over a Goofy Hydra tee, and the person I was going to meet... To say, we don't see eye to eye on the Thargoid problem. So, from now on, I also don't endorse attempting to jump into trousers in zero G, while also trying to steer the ship around a star with one hand on the stick. The embarrassment might be more dangerous than a superheated star corona.

Finally slapping the landing gear onto the pad at the Citi Gateway, I quickly grabbed the items you need the most in the local so-called 'Bar', namely a pistol and a small personal shield, and headed straight to that place. Fuck the security cameras around and other stuff that might cause me problems later. Later... Will come later.

* * *

Eventually, my forced march brought me to the Bar entrance. And, since it was the famous Inara Bar, that entire operation had nothing to do with what people normally do in bars. But first, the door: it was an obstacle I wanted to take without wasting much time. Haw-haw-haw.

Since my typical 'horizontal door-diving' includes turning the upper body and going head and one shoulder first, there's a teeny tiny moment when I can't actually see what's happening right in front of me. And, who also doesn't see what's happening right in front of them? Halfwits who walk with their eyes stuck into screens of communicators and datapads.

Of course I froze in place when I felt that the top of my head hit something: that poor idiot's comm. Froze in place and slowly, really slowly moved in the reverse direction. And the guy, slowly lowered his device, the one with high-quality touchscreen and broadband connection capability, mortal enemy of healthy attention span. So, our eyes met.

"Could I... Get in first, please?"

No answer. Or, no verbal one. Just looking at me with his mouth open. Okay... At least he did step back. Or maybe it was more like a jump.

And I already knew the best way to find Kasumi in public places: by looking into the dim, far corners first.

"Hey," I really didn't know how to greet her properly, yet promptly stopped before calling her 'Kas', and waved my hand slightly on the chest level, navigating through the bar. Her appearance surprised me at first, since she wasn't looking... even more curvy than her avatar back from the days of our VR insanity, but I figured out why rather quickly. A holo-disguise. Updating at several hundred 'frames', or 'forms' per second. I let a brief smirk appear on my face and came closer to her table.

"Got it. A hologram," I 'let her know that I know' on an almost whispering level, barely over the ambient noise of the bar, and then added more audibly, yet still within the private conversation volumes. "So, here I am. Let me guess. Azimuth fucks around a little too much. Right?"

I raised my head to look up and, not really knowing how to best answer, just… nodded. I also wasn’t really sure where the best place to dump all of those shitty details out was. But… probably, simply anywhere that was not here, and in private.

Still difficult to do the whole ‘eye contact at face level’ thing, especially with someone who I’d had a strong enough disagreement with to remain fresh in the memory for months, even if not on the permanent relationship ender level… so my eyes quickly darted somewhere else, as they did. And I waited for my counterpart to provide a solution out… the angle was kind of uncomfortable on the neck anyway, being that I was looking up at a 2.5 meter individual, while sat down.
10 Aug 2024, 2:12pm
"Ah, frackit...", I muttered quietly, realising it might be uncomfortable for her to look up, especially from under her hood, and, turning my head left to right, attempted to spot a good place to sit down. Or at least any. Chairs, tables, chairs, tables... And the corner couch Kasumi already sat on, that was off the list for being a rude personal space violation. Perhaps now, considering the disagreements, the personal space distance threshold was placed even further.

Chairs were off the list too: armrests on them might've been helpful for drunks, but rendered the option of putting two of them side to side impossible. And tables haven't been a good sitting option from the beginning.

"Uh... okay...", I quietly and reluctantly agreed and moved the chair aside in order to land on the floor, crossing my legs underneath me, hoping that the table itself provided enough distance between us.

"So... I was right, yeah?"
10 Aug 2024, 2:23pm
I shook my head, with my eyes closed - not in disagreement, but just sheer annoyance.

"This time... they, went too far. But... if you want details, not - here. Too many ears, and ..." I looked at the stares directed at our odd duo, of which there would have been even more if I was not concealing my extravagant - to say the least - figure. "... people watching."

The pronunciation of that indicating it was more meant as "staring". I yet had to figure out where to go for somewhere more private, though - other than coming to the conclusion that off the station, or out of sight of its cameras, at least, was preferable.
