General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Lambast Mercy Stepping into the bar, Lambast slowed her pace, and looked to see if mister Vasilescu was present.

It was difficult to not notice Mercy when she entered a room. Her presence and impeccable appearance commanded attention, so it was not unexpected when a few heads turned her way. If Vasil looked Imperial, Lambast Looked High-Uber-Uncompromisingly-Imperial. What Vasil had not expected was that she would be carrying a cake and accompanied by someone, and certainly not someone like Maul. The opposing aesthetics, while not at complete odds with one another, did cause him to pause a moment before waving a hand toward Lamb.

“Lady Lambast! Over here,” he said, standing and adjusting the stiff, priest-like collar of his flight suit to be more presentable. Vasil’s thumb also surreptitiously brushed the gold ERS insignia on the collar to connect with the Onoarea. Under his breath, told the COVAS to start recording

'Urgh. More Imperials.'

That was about the only thought which I could have. And I finished my first drink - in a mostly natural way, rather than quickly downing what remained in the glass - somewhat disguising an eyeroll behind it.

If the one man was obviously Imperial, he looked discreet compared to that woman, who was most definitely high-class, and probably part of the types I could stand the least. Everything to gain, nothing to lose from the system, and they cared about the people below them about as much. Unless they could make something from them, whether that was money or to further their ridiculous standing.

I didn't quite reach for my second glass immediately, though, giving the other individual a more curious eye from my corner. Whoever he was, matched up with the woman he accompanied about as well as I would have, with my cargo pants, black top and red jacket.

“Lady Lambast! Over here,” he said, standing and adjusting the stiff, priest-like collar of his flight suit to be more presentable.

Maul’s head turned to the man calling out to Lambast. He appeared as well put together as any other of her associates, from the appearance down to the way he seemed to carry himself.

“Hubba hubba, looks like you’ve caught a silver fox you sly dog.” He said, ribbing at Lambast in jest.

His eyes lingered around the bar, scanning the patrons for any familiar faces. This wasn’t his first time here but it had been an handful of years since then. Just then, he caught a woman giving him and Lambast a curious look over. He responded with a polite smile and nod. It wasn’t the first time he’d seen that look. He’d grown accustomed to it. Besides, him and Lambast were nearly complete opposites of one another. Their ideals, goals, lifestyles hardly ever aligned, but their friendship was forged in blood many years ago. Blood that served to pave the way to lucrative business agreements that still are being upheld to this day and furthermore; to the people they have become today.

"Oh shush" said Lambast quietly, barely moving her lips as she smiled and nodded to Vasil.

"Mister Vasilescu, a pleasure to see you again" she said keeping eye contact with Vasil as she sat taking care not to let her short sword get in the way.

Placing the cake on the table, she checked there was magnetic hold on the cake stand, then moved over to make space for Maul, before making introductions

"This is my good friend mister Montresor, who surprised me with a most welcome visit. Mister Montresor, I introduce Vasil Vasilescu, a recent acquittance"

Sitting upright, she waited for the men to finish greetings.

I merely shrugged back and picked up my second beer glass instead, quietly sipping away at it. Would have to stop there for now, once it was empty, or I'd be getting funny before I'd even spoken to anybody.

Not that the chance of it seemed to be too high, as it was. Those people were doing something together, that involved a cake, or at least something of the sort in a box the right shape and size, and it wasn't any of my business.

Knowing me, I'd probably knock it off the table by accident, particularly with my newly enhanced body proportions. Even more so if I got drunk... and even that wouldn't want to make me converse with Imperials. So it was probably for the better I didn't get their attention... too much. That woman probably wouldn't have noticed me if I'd walked right past her, except for a disdaining stare, at least.

Vasil extended his hand to Maul. Nothing beat an old fashioned firm handshake. "A pleasure, sir."

Phresh, now Maul. It seemed to Vasil that Lamb had a habit of gathering around her individuals who provided a counterbalance to her outwardly proper and severe demeanor.

Vasil motioned the server over. "I'll have another," he said, indicating his empty bourbon, then Lamn and Maul. "And whatever they care to have. Just put it on my tab."
04 Jul 2024, 1:10am
Maul responded to Vasil’s handshake with his own proper old fashioned shake. “Ditto, nice suit by the way, the quality really exudes excellence and the gold trimming has this…ah…I want to say…subtle youthful exuberance about it.” His tone stayed flat, leaving Vasil to deduce whether he was joking or not; the truth was somewhere in the middle. It WAS a nice suit after all.

“As for a drink,” he said, turning to the server. “I’ll just have a soda, servers choice.”

He looked back to Vasil.

“Trying to stay on the straight and narrow, ya know? Been intoxicated enough for one lifetime, I reckon.”
04 Jul 2024, 2:02am
"Then congrats on your efforts to keep a clear mind," said Vasil taking a seat. He said nothing more on the matter of sobriety, feeling that saying anything else would be disingenuous since he'd never had to struggle against addictive urges to numb the brain.

Vasil looked down at the suit. "The suit is more a matter of need than of choice, really." He shrugged and looked back to Maul and Lamb. The man did not seem pretentious, so Vasil felt no need to be, either. "You have to look the part when conducting business in certain circles. Custom suits, Gutamaya ships, that sort of thing. Otherwise, something more utilitarian like a maverick suit and a Lakon are more my style."
04 Jul 2024, 3:55am
“Hey a fellow Mavhead! You’d be hard up to find a more flexible tool for the job. Mine has yet to fail me on any contract.”

He flashed a genuine smile at Vasil.

“Yeah, I get you on the whole “looking the part” thing. People are so quick to form strong opinions from something as simple as appearances. But when someone or something stands in your way, you’ve gotta use every tool in the shed to remove them, and goddamn if deception through outward appearance isn’t a solid tool. Assuming one knows how to use it.”

Pointing a thumb over to Lambast, he continued, laughing as he spoke.

“Like this one time Lamb introduced me to her uppity neighbors. Told them I was some sort of new groundbreaking code wizard or some shit. All I did was dress the part and act like a pompous dickhead and BOOM, I sold them an early version of an in home AI model I’d been cooking up. It was buggy as all hell, rude as fuck and they absolutely loved the thing. Said it was ‘quirky’! But it’s whatever, I walked away from that deal with more creds than prior.”

Stopping there, he realized he’d been reminiscing again. It was hard not to want to live within the memories that he’d grown so fond of, but this stage of life needed to be about moving forward.

“Ah well…sorry about all that.”

He cleared his throat and sat up a bit straighter.

“I suppose the moral of the story is: we all wear masks, so second guess even your own insights and intuitions.”

Leaning aside to give Maul a look up and down, Lambast wondered what image he had been trying to project for years. If he'd been aiming for flaky waister, he'd nailed it. Still it was nice to see him chatty without chemical assistance for a change. This way at least, he made sense.

"I'll have a gee and tee please, and squeeze a quarter real lime in there if you have it, thank you. Three small plates and dessert forks would also be nice"

After then waiter left, Lambast moved the cake to canter of the table.

"I had a little time to kill while coordinating travel, so I delivered on the cake we had to skip last time, mister Vasilescu. Something sweet to savour while we discuss a transfer you mention?"
04 Jul 2024, 2:09pm
“You certainly bring the tastier item to the table,” Vasil said, lifting the top off the cake and setting it aside. “What I have does not look nearly as good, and covering it with buttercream icing would not make it taste better. Though, Ninette does speak French if that matters.”

Vasil sat back. “She is not in the best physical shape, having been roughed up during recovery. Other than very basic tests to verify that there is no memory loss, I’ve not touched her and have kept her safely locked away. I’m not COVAS engineer and did not want to risk damaging anything with amateurish attempts at memory rerieval.”

“However, it sounds to me like Mr Montresor has the appropriate skills to get what you need from it.”

Sliding the lid her way, Lambast took the cake slice from its recess on the underside and unfolded its handel.

"I take it you are implying there is something on this covas that is of significance. What is it?" asked Lambast offering the slicer to Vasil.
04 Jul 2024, 3:15pm
Vasil took the slice and started portioning the cake. "It is a piece to a puzzle. Your acquaintance in Summerland was unable to provide complete solution to the puzzle but assured me that the COVAS has the information he was going to give you."

Vasil paused while the server delivered the drinks and plates. Setting a slice of cake on each plate, he slid them to Lamb and Maul and took the last piece for himself. "The COVAS is from Goodness' ship and contains a record of all jumps made prior to his disappearance."

"By the way, you missed a spectacular show in Summerland," he said taking a bite of the cake, then added, "Oh... this is really good."
04 Jul 2024, 5:00pm
"Thank you. complements are aways welcome" said Lambast graciously with a slight nod of her head and a modest smile.

Giving everyone a moment, including her self to sample the home made confectionary, she chewed thoughtfully, mulling over what mister Vasilescu had just said.

"Well, when one's friends ask for your presents, one feels the need to answer the call. After all mister Vasilescu, no man, or woman is an island. Besides, I was unsure of what to do about the matter anyway, so mister Montresor's call made my direction clear"

Cutting another bite with her dessert fork, Lambast paused it in the air half way to her mouth.

"I was under the impression you had chosen to distance your self from this whole Goodness affair. How is it you come to be in possession of covas that could hold the location of the wayward son?"

Her own investigation had lead Lambast to this very room and an AX Krait that Lambast's company had built for Creamy to fly, leaving this station with Creamy and Vodan at the controls. Learning how Vasil came to have the covas that was probably on that very ship, would be interesting.
04 Jul 2024, 5:56pm
Vasil respected that Lamb remained calm and focused given that he had something that could potentially save her a good amount of time finding Creamy. She was practical and not prone to rash decisions, so Vasil would have to take his time and rely on facts rather than emotional manipulation to close any deal.

“The short version is that you tend to be left alone when your ship’s transponder broadcasts neutral rescue codes. You might be seen as a scavenger and viewed with suspicion, but in general neither side of a fight molests you as long as you are recovering personnel from both sides. Also, you are not obliged to turn over any recovered personnel except to authorized Search and Rescue agents.”

Vasil took another bite of cake; it really was very good, almost distracting by how tasty it was. “I happened to pick up something the Anansi’s captain wanted and brokered a trade for the COVAS. He apparently had something to do with Goodness’ disappearance and had removed the COVAS right after. I’ve no idea where the ship is. I would guess it’s been sold or scrapped.”
