General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Vodan had struck a deal with Lambast to capture Red Jade in exchange for an introduction to one Lord Vergerfield. Apparently, this Vengerfield chap was that man that knew the ultimate fate of Lord Goodness. It was fair to assume that the 'something' Vasil had picked up was Red Jade herself. When Lambast had taken Maul to visit the raider carrier repair station, Vodan had claimed he was not in possession of Red Jade, but could she really trust the word of a raider?

Vasil had been to visit Red Jades ship, Destines Jester before it attacked Vodan's fleet. Maybe he struck a deal with her, or planted the seeds of a deception that matured during the attack. What ever the case, Vasil had managed to achieve with a Type Ten, what she hadn't managed with a carrier, it's fleet, and years of breach and extraction training.

What bothered Lambast was the fact that Vasil had managed to secure a strong bargaining chip (that was probably Red Jade) and he had taken it to Vodan, and not her. She tried not to let the fact that she was annoyed show on her face. After all she could be wrong, and there was a perfectly sensible reason Vodan had traded a second option to Vasil the raider captain had not offered Lambast.

"Excuse me mister Vasilescu. Leaving the validity of the data contained within the covas aside for now. After all serendipity has bought mister Montresor back to help with that, I would like to know just what it was you traded with Vodan for it"

"If you would be so kind"

"I don't mind at all. Besides, I cannot refuse someone who has provided such wonderful cake."

Yes, he expected she’d ask what was traded and he’d been considering the possible responses ever since securing the COVAS. A half-truth would satisfy most people, who would fill in the obfuscated half with what they assumed to be true. However, a half-truth in this circumstance was a calculated risk and would only hurt the ultimate long-term goal if the entire truth was revealed.

Vasil was not averse to taking calculated risks for a large return, but there was more at stake than credits. He felt the opportunity to accelerate his sister’s political aspirations did not warrant taking a risk.

“I traded a dozen pods containing some of the raider's crew along with one that had Red Jade’s biosignature attached to it. However, I was not there when the pod was opened to reveal unidentifiable remains. Hyper-ruptured biomass is the technical term for it. Chunky meat sauce is the colloquial.” He could not resist taking another bite of cake. Both because it was so damn good, and to let what he said sink in.

"The last I saw of Marcela Enciso Ruiz y Hidalgo, she was sleeping peacefully in an unmarked pod when I delivered her and another 300 pods to Search and Rescue agents in Achenar.”

Putting her fork down, Lambast interlocked her fingers and sat back in her seat. There was plenty she could say, but none of it was conductive to a good relationship. At the end of the day, no matter how he came across it, Vasil had an item that may allow her to circumvent a visit with a man that would very likely come with its own deadly complications.

"A game well played I suppose mister Vasilescu, although I would be alert for mister Hooder taking steps to get even"

Turning to her old friend, Lambast asked for his help with the device in question.

"Mister Montresor, do you think it would be much of an imposition to find out if this covas had any useful data?"
04 Jul 2024, 10:47pm
Having finished my second beer - maybe a little faster than the first - I decided to commit a, perhaps somewhat silly, but definitely provocative gesture, possibly because my mind was already clouded a little. But not so much as to be unable to walk straight... a little closer to the Imperials and their strange friend, or associate - but not enough to be considered intrusive or impolite, only draw some attention - while I went over to the bar and leaned on the counter with both arms folded on top of one another, right leg placed forward slightly, creating a posture that quite highlighted the surgery-enhanced body, despite the - excepting the shirt - non-revealing clothing.

Also probably wouldn't fool anybody even if it did look 'natural', thanks to what had been used to perform the enhancement... because it was a little too big to really occur within the usual limits of human body development and shape. If my actions were enough to stifle or stir up the high-class Imperial woman a little, I considered myself accomplished for the day... not that it was anything personal, unless given a reason for it to be.

It also was intended to look inconspicuous and natural enough of a path to the bar to leave some ambiguity to the action, and I tried to withhold a grin as I thought about what else to order, if anything.

Movement entering the periphery of his vision briefly drew his attention away from the table and to the bar. Silhouetted against a large vidscreen behind the bar was a shape that he felt reasonably certain had undergone upper ballast enhancement. So much enhancement that it probably tested the tensile strength of whatever synthetic fiber was struggling to contain the doctor's handiwork. His attention returned to the business at hand, not showing his amusement that the commercial on the screen behind Jana was for balloon cruises in the upper atmosphere of a local gas giant.

Lambast Mercy Turning to her old friend, Lambast asked for his help with the device in question.

"Mister Montresor, do you think it would be much of an imposition to find out if this covas had any useful data?"

"Shouldn't be a problem, unless she's a relic like Holly, but even then I'm sure I could figure something out. We can swap her out with the stock COVAS back on my ship and run some diagnostics to make sure it's safe to pry deeper into that "oui" little head of hers without potentially corrupting the data." He smiled proudly at his play on words and gave a quick glance between Vasil and Lambast to see if either appreciated his terrible pun.

"If Creamy is anything like me, he'd have put a failsafe in place to wipe everything if this thing was ever tampered with. Thankfully, I don't think that's the case. Better safe than sorry though."

Jana RazekiHI went over to the bar and leaned on the counter with both arms folded on top of one another, right leg placed forward slightly, creating a posture that quite highlighted the surgery-enhanced body, despite the - excepting the shirt - non-revealing clothing.

Vasil looked, which caused Maul to look as well. His eye lingered slightly longer though, and as the balloon cruise ad had ended, an ad for Willow's Parts & Repairs had began.

"Son of a bitch! She's here!?" he said, perhaps louder than intended, still looking in the direction of Jana, who's provocative gesture had originally held his attention in the first place but was overtaken by a the sight of a lead to someone he'd been looking for.

Maul looked back at Lambast and Vasil, his cheeks slightly flush with embarrassment from his outburst.

"It was the ad, not the...uh...not that chick...but I mean...she's...the ad is..." He then decided to take another bite of cake and shut up before he further embarrassed himself.

It was often the case with her choice of friends. They would inevitably do something that would require a slight mental reset to ignore a faux pas of one description or another. Whatever the case, she found it adorable of them to try and maintain higher standard for her benefit, weather they achieved it or not.

After giving Maul a completely blank expression and a slightly longer blink than usual, Lambast got back to her conversation with Vasilescu.

"It seems I am in luck today. If you would be kind enough to deliver the covas to mister Montresor, I can start thinking about taking steps towards creating a town back home. Thank you very much indeed mister Vasilescu"

"Now, about our previous arrangement. I am pleased to see so many people from her royal majesty's systems are being given an opportunity to find work thanks to EMS relocating them, but I am worried about the concentration of relocated individuals with in the systems that hold their contracts. Has EMS had any problems EOM maybe able to help smooth over?"

Vasil slid the remainder of his cake and his bourbon to the side. They were fine tools for socializing and light conversation, but a distraction when it came to discussing business. “Yes, let’s talk about towns and star ports and people both missing and displaced.”

He had hoped she might offer something in return for the COVAS. That way it would seem more like her idea of initiating a trade for the AI. However, he knew that he might have to start the negotiations. Lamb’s assumption he would hand over the COVAS without something in return needed to be addressed quickly.

Vasil rested his arms on the table, one hand over the other. “There comes a time when business must supplant favors. Handing over the COVAS is too great a favor.”
05 Jul 2024, 1:06pm
Putting aside the repast was a polite indication that matters of a more serious nature needed addressing. Lambast couldn't pretend she wasn't disappointed. For one shining moment, she had felt someone was doing something to make her life easier for a change.

Lambast had spent many light years, credits, and resources darting round the galaxy helping out the few people she cared for. Not for reward, but just because she could. It was nice to think that someone with the same sort of background was doing something big for her, but the human race usually took every opportunity to disappoint.

Cursing herself a fool for getting her hopes up, Lambast took a calming berth through her nose and used her small business smile to start negotiations.

"I see mister Vasilescu, I wonder what you had in mind for recompense?"
05 Jul 2024, 1:19pm
Maul felt a sudden change in the mood between Lambast and Vasil. Any business to do with towns or star ports were well beyond him. Though, he did have business of his own to attend to.

"Pardon my interjection here but I'm going to have to excuse myself, something has suddenly come up. Lamb, I'll be on station so contact me when the deets are ironed out or if there's anything you need me to do."

"It was a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Vasilescu. Good luck to you both with the negotiations." he said as he stood from the booth, bowing his head slightly before making a hasty exit from the bar.
05 Jul 2024, 2:05pm
Vasil nodded to Maul and waited for him to depart before looking back to Lamb.

“Let me start by saying that I understand this COVAS may or may not have the information you need. However, this is what the pirate, Hooker, or whatever, offered when I suggested trading Red Jade for Lord Pompadour’s location. The fact that he kept the COVAS for nearly a year after removing it, according to the diagnostics, is a good indication that it probably has something useful.”

Vasil went straight to the meat of the proposal. He had general road map of details, proposals, and counterarguments but offering g them up now would only clutter things up. Best to deal with the small details one at a time.

“Best line up front: You need a town and a starport and relief from the headaches caused by Daddy Pompadour. ERS needs a town-sized bit of land on which to settle displaced Imperial citizens. I am sure we can come to an agreement where most, if not all of both party’s needs are met.”

'Ugh. Business talk.'

Was hard to miss it when I was very much within hearing distance to the two Imperials after their... whoever the other person was within that relationship triangle, left. I certainly wasn't going to judge, considering my own strange tastes.

Seemed like a good idea to move on from here, for now, rather than to get hopelessly drunk. Wasn't really too interesting anyway. So I ordered some water to offset the previous alcohol intake, quickly put it down, and left, thinking maybe I'd look for that Willow's shop. I had been having some issues with my plasma cutter intermittently cutting out for no apparent reason, and I was totally clueless to the problem, as swapping out the power cell hadn't done it. So I'd have a valid excuse to drop by there anyway.

Hopefully wouldn't be too weird to run into that man there, seeing as it sounded like he had some kind of personal thing going with Willow... which I didn't really want to interfere with, either. Just needed to snag the tool from my ship, and make sure it - and I - had nothing security would object to, on it. And myself.

... just as well that I had left because I could hear some live playback of the ongoing assault against Titan Indra starting up in the bar as I reached its entrance. And I totally was not interested in that war right now... at all.
05 Jul 2024, 2:51pm
There was a timeline that needed clarifying, and personal opinions that needed to be suppressed. Sometimes she wished she'd leave her sword on the ship. Her mother never let Lambast take any weapons to a meeting.

"Let me see if I understand what has happened in the last few days. We talked about EMS building the town I have in mind, and I rejected your offer"

"Using the information I confided in you, you beat me to the punch and grabbed the prize. A prize that could let me move towards my personal goal. Instead of bringing that ultimate bargaining chip to me, you chose to barter with a pirate, destroying my arrangement."

"Now you offer me a previously unmentioned stepping stone, without even checking it contains any relevant information. What you want in exchange for this maybe, is definitely my town. The town that I will see from my bedroom window every morning."

She let that settle in saying nothing for a long moment, looking Vasil directly in the eyes with her fingers interlocked, hands almost flat on the table.

"In all honesty mister Vasilescu, how would you rate that deal if I offered it to you?"

Jana RazekiI could hear some live playback of the ongoing assault against Titan Indra starting up in the bar

As the transmission started and a live feed picture appeared on the screen, a few stray voice lines made it through the comm interference.

"Make them eat their own nut sacks!"

"Dominate! Humiliate! Throw used heatsinks at it!"

"Bring it on, piss daisies!"

...muttering a quick "excuse me", the camera drone operator promptly muted the live audio and then proceeded with more filtered, broadcast-friendly official announcements.

Lambast Mercy "In all honesty mister Vasilescu, how would you rate that deal if I offered it to you?"

Vasil held her gaze. “Being a businessman, I’d set my personal feelings aside and make a counteroffer. Or, at a bare minimum, continue discussions to get a better understanding of the situation before outright rejecting a proposal.”

“However,” he said leaning back, his voice and demeanor remaining calm, “I’ll address a few of your immediate concerns. First, without information I gave you, the Anansi, her crew and cargo, might well be in the hands of Red Jade and the IIS and you’d be no closer to your goal. So, your argument about me using information against you is not valid.”

His gaze intensified, bordering on accusational, though his tone remained calm and professional. “Second, and I admit this is more personal than business, the girl deserved better than to be handed over to scum. We both know their type is not subtle when extracting info from prisoners. I found myself in a position to prevent that and still get the prize, so I did.”

“Whether you despise or admire me for that does not matter becuase this,” he inticated both he and her with a hand, “is business, not in any way personal.”

Vasil leaned forward again and slid the cake back in front of him. Taking up the fork, he offered Lamb a half shrug, his voice betraying a small amount of disappointment. “I’d hoped for conversation that would result in something beneficial to both you and ERS. However, if you care to make this about the simple vulgarities of monetary compensation, I’ll oblige.”
